I grow tired of your mouth." Bones shifted under Curran's skin. The nose widened, the jaws grew, the top lip split, displaying enormous teeth. I was staring into the face of a nightmare, a horrible meld of human and lion. If a thing that weighed over six hundred pounds in beast-form could be called a lion. His eyes never changed. The rest of him - the body, the arms, the legs, even his hair and skin remained human. The shapeshifters had three forms: beast, human, and half. They could shift into any of the three, but they always changed shape completely. Most had to strain to maintain the half-form and to be able to speak in it was a great achievement. Only Curran could do this: turn part of his body into one shape while keeping the rest in another.
Normally, I had no trouble with Curran's face in half-form. It was well-proportioned, even - many shapeshifters suffered the "my jaws are way too big and don't fit together" syndrome - but I was used to that half-form face being sheathed in gray fur. Having human skin stretched over it was nausea inducing.
He noticed my heroic efforts not to barf. "What is it now?"
I waved my hand around my face. "Fur."
"What do you mean?"
"Your face has no fur."
Curran touched his chin. And just like that all traces of the beast vanished. He sat before me fully human.
He massaged his jaw.
The beast grew stronger during the flare. Curran's irritation caused his control to slip just a hair.
"Having techn ~ Ilona Andrews
The Flare quotes by Ilona Andrews
Strange how close the darkness is, even when things seem brightest. Even in the glare of a summer noon, when the sidewalk bakes and iron fences are hot to the touch, the shadows are still with us. They congregate in doorways and porches, and under bridges, and beneath the brims of gentlemen's hats so you cannot see their eyes. There is darkness in our mouths and ears; in our bags and wallets; within the swing of men's jackets and beneath the flare of women's skirts. We carry it around with us, the dark, and its influence stains us deep. ~ Jonathan Stroud
The Flare quotes by Jonathan Stroud
he guessed this was a Welsh regiment. The flare died. Walter leaped to his feet and ran, heading for the German side. The sentry would be unable to see for a few seconds, his vision spoiled by the flare. Walter ran faster than he ever had, expecting the rifle to fire again at any moment. In half a minute he came to the British wire and dropped gratefully to his knees. He crawled rapidly forward through a gap. Another flare went up. ~ Ken Follett
The Flare quotes by Ken Follett
The flare-watch in East Nekhebet had picked up an energy pulse, much brighter than anything seen previously. Briefly, there was the worrying possibility that Delta Pavonis was about to repeat the flare which had wiped out the Amarantin: the vast coronal mass ejection known as the Event. But closer examination revealed that the flare did not originate from the star, but rather from something several light-hours beyond it, on the edge of the system. ~ Alastair Reynolds
The Flare quotes by Alastair Reynolds
She's immune to the Flare. Use her. Do it before the crazy people find you. ~ James Dashner
The Flare quotes by James Dashner
Night came on, the lamps were lighted, the tables near him found occupants, and Paris began to wear that peculiar evening look of hers which seems to say, in the flare of windows and theatre-doors, and the muffled rumble of swift-rolling carriages, that this is no world for you unless you have your pockets lined and your scruples drugged. ~ Henry James
The Flare quotes by Henry James
And at night the river flows, it bears pale stars on the holy water, some sink like veils, some show like fish, the great moon that once was rose now high like a blazing milk flails its white reflection vertical and deep in the dark surgey mass wall river's grinding bed push. As in a sad dream, under the streetlamp, by pocky unpaved holes in dirt, the father James Cassidy comes home with lunchpail and lantern, limping, redfaced, and turns in for supper and sleep.

Now a door slams. The kids have rushed out for the last play, the mothers are planning and slamming in kitchens, you can hear it out in swish leaf orchards, on popcorn swings, in the million-foliaged sweet wafted night of sighs, songs, shushes. A thousand things up and down the street, deep, lovely, dangerous, aureating, breathing, throbbing like stars; a whistle, a faint yell; the flow of Lowell over rooftops beyond; the bark on the river, the wild goose of the night yakking, ducking in the sand and sparkle; the ululating lap and purl and lovely mystery on the shore, dark, always dark the river's cunning unseen lips, murmuring kisses, eating night, stealing sand, sneaky.

'Mag-gie!' the kids are calling under the railroad bridge where they've been swimming. The freight train still rumbles over a hundred cars long, the engine threw the flare on little white bathers, little Picasso horses of the night as dense and tragic in the gloom comes my soul looking for what was there that disappeared and le ~ Jack Kerouac
The Flare quotes by Jack Kerouac
Connor felt that he could stare for hours into her eyes and he would still not understand her secrets. He knew for certain that she had secrets. For in that short moment when their eyes had met, he had seen her secrets. And he wanted to know them. Something else though, he had seen the flare of recognition in her eyes. Had they met? ~ Laura Hunsaker
The Flare quotes by Laura Hunsaker
And then she fell into his arms. It was what he'd dreamed of on sleepless nights, holding her, feeling the press of her breasts to his chest, the flare of her hips in his hands. He forgot all about where they were, why they were alone together. He forgot the risk of his dishonor and her ruin. There was still a corrupt beast inside him, waiting for this chance. All that mattered was that they were alone, and she was with him, and he wished he never had to let her go. ~ Gayle Callen
The Flare quotes by Gayle Callen
I think marriage is dangerous. The idea of two people trying to possess each other is wrong. I don't think the flare of love lasts. Your mind rather than your emotions must answer for the success of matrimony. It must be friendship - a calm companionship which can last through the years. ~ Carole Lombard
The Flare quotes by Carole Lombard
Rose took my nose, I suppose. And it really blows ... Get it? It really blows. My nose. Taken by Rose. I suppose. ~ James Dashner
The Flare quotes by James Dashner
Hmph," said Sharon . "Did you know that the numbers three and seven are sacred to vampires? There are seven vampire sects."
"Seven sacred sects," I repeated. "Say that three times fast."
"How about I spank you instead?" asked Patrick in a benign tone that belied the flare of irritation in his gaze.
"Only if you tie me to a bed and use a paddle."
His silver eyes went molten. Uh-oh. Me and my big smart-aleck mouth.
"I ... uh, sorry. I didn't mean that. I saw Secretary a few too many times. I'm impressionable. ~ Michele Bardsley
The Flare quotes by Michele Bardsley
The eyes of hope looking over the flare of the hood into the maw with its white line feeding in straight as an arrow, the lighting of fresh cigarettes, the buckling to lean forward to the next adventure something that's been going on in America ever since the covered wagons clocked the deserts in three months flat - ~ Jack Kerouac
The Flare quotes by Jack Kerouac
Niall had been able to mask the odor of fairy from Eric in the restaurant, but I saw from the flare of Eric's nostrils that the intoxicating scent clung to me. Eric's eyes closed in ecstasy, and he actually licked his lips. I felt like a T-bone just out of reach of a hungry dog.
"Snap out of it," I said. I wasn't in the mood.
With a huge effort, Eric reigned himself in. "When you smell like that," he said, "I just wanna fuck you and bite you and rub myself all over you. ~ Charlaine Harris
The Flare quotes by Charlaine Harris
He chanced a look at her and saw the flare of something in her eyes. A salve to the emptiness that sometimes threatened to suffocate him. ~ Melina Marchetta
The Flare quotes by Melina Marchetta
But, without preaching, the truth may surely be borne in mind, that the bustle, and triumph, and laughter, and gaiety which Vanity Fair exhibits in public, do not always pursue the performer into private life, and that the most dreary depression of spirits and dismal repentances sometimes overcome him. Recollection of the best ordained banquets will scarcely cheer sick epicures. Reminiscences of the most becoming dresses and brilliant ball triumphs will go very little way to console faded beauties. Perhaps statesmen, at a particular period of existence, are not much gratified at thinking over the most triumphant divisions; and the success or the pleasure of yesterday becomes of very small account when a certain (albeit uncertain) morrow is in view, about which all of us must some day or other be speculating. O brother wearers of motley! Are there not moments when one grows sick of grinning and tumbling, and the jingling of cap and bells? This, dear friends and companions, is my amiable object--to walk with you through the Fair, to examine the shops and the shows there; and that we should all come home after the flare, and the noise, and the gaiety, and be perfectly miserable in private. ~ William Makepeace Thackeray
The Flare quotes by William Makepeace Thackeray
Keeps the Flare at bay because the virus thrives in your brain. Eats at it, destroys it. If there's not a lot of activity, the virus weakens. ~ James Dashner
The Flare quotes by James Dashner
He liked however the open shutters; he opened everywhere those Mrs. Muldoon had closed, closing them as carefully afterwards, so that she shouldn't notice: he liked
oh this he did like, and above all in the upper rooms!
the sense of the hard silver of the autumn stars through the window-panes, and scarcely less the flare of the street-lamps below, the white electric lustre which it would have taken curtains to keep out. This was human actual social; this was of the world he had lived in, and he was more at his ease certainly for the countenance, coldly general and impersonal, that all the while and in spite of his detachment it seemed to give him. ~ Henry James
The Flare quotes by Henry James
I am a Crank, Minho! I am a Crank! Why can't you get that through your bloody head? If you had the Flare and knew what you were about to go through, would you want your friends to stand around and watch? Huh? Would you want that? ~ James Dashner
The Flare quotes by James Dashner
Jaxton met his gaze for just a second, then scowled and turned away.
The recognition in that look was painful; years of recollections and long forgotten
emotions buzzed through his brain. Ashamed of the flare of attraction he'd just allowed
himself, he turned away and faked a smile. ~ Elaine White
The Flare quotes by Elaine White
But I would be damned if I'd let Curran intimidate me into caving in.
"I see. I retrieve the surveys the Pack let slip through its fingers, and in return you bring me here against my will, interrogate me, and threaten me with bodily harm. I'm sure the Order will be amused to learn the Pack kidnapped its representative."
Curran nodded thoughtfully. "Aha. Who's going to tell them?"
Um . . . Good question. He could kill me and nobody would ever find my body. The Order wouldn't even investigate that hard; they might just chalk it up to the flare-related craziness.
"I guess I'll just have to kick your ass and break out of here." I bravely drank the rest of the soup from the bowl, abandoning all propriety. Probably shouldn't have said that.
"In your dreams."
"We've never had our rematch. I might win." Probably shouldn't have said that, either. ~ Ilona Andrews
The Flare quotes by Ilona Andrews
You yourself rekindle the flare, of hatred, anger and despair. ~ Eric Rada
The Flare quotes by Eric Rada
Though I am fully aware that it was an act of desperation after the sun flares, releasing the Flare virus as a means of population control was an abhorrent and irreversible crime. ~ James Dashner
The Flare quotes by James Dashner
Believe it or not, there are some things that I have written that would be kind of a dream to make. Hopefully, I will get to finance them ... There is something that I wrote called 'Demon's Flare' which would kind of be a dream come true. ~ Steven Seagal
The Flare quotes by Steven Seagal
Whenever I get lost in a novel I just throw a poem in. What it does is flare up, and it's so illuminated that I'm able to see where to go. I write between these illuminations. ~ Kate Braverman
The Flare quotes by Kate Braverman
Before you flare up at anyone's faults, take time to count to ten - ten of your own. ~ Suzanne Woods Fisher
The Flare quotes by Suzanne Woods Fisher
Whoever doesn't flare up at someone who's angry wins a battle hard to win. ~ Gautama Buddha
The Flare quotes by Gautama Buddha
Every life can be learned from, as either a flame of hope or a cautionary flare. ~ Richard Paul Evans
The Flare quotes by Richard Paul Evans
Distance can make a love fade, while closeness can make hate flare; as distance can make hate fade, while closeness can make love flare. ~ Anthony Liccione
The Flare quotes by Anthony Liccione
You want everyone to be a full character. No one is just evil, or very few people are, hopefully. They're characters, so you want to flush them out. You've got to show all sides of them. There is definitely an antagonistic relationship between guards and prisoners, and I do think it flares up. ~ Jenji Kohan
The Flare quotes by Jenji Kohan
SK La'Flare's a legend. It was me, him and Vince, and Frank would come through sometimes and s - - and he was, like, fully rapping. N - - s was on it. ~ Earl Sweatshirt
The Flare quotes by Earl Sweatshirt
Big fires flare up in a wind, but little ones are blown out unless they are carried in under cover. ~ Saint Francis De Sales
The Flare quotes by Saint Francis De Sales
So, like a forgotten fire, a childhood can always flare up again within us. ~ Gaston Bachelard
The Flare quotes by Gaston Bachelard
Her mouth tasted of smoke and toothpaste and something feety that made my blood flare ~ John Banville
The Flare quotes by John Banville
What?" I whispered, suspicious, still fighting my flare of hormones. Or, more precisely, whoremones. That's ~ Penny Reid
The Flare quotes by Penny Reid
Just as a star suddenly flares to a hundred times its previous brightness -- and then fades away, so, too, a human being not disposed to be a political may nonetheless flare up briefly and intensely in prison and perish as a result. Ordinarily we do not learn about these cases. Sometimes there is a witness to tell about them. Sometimes there is merely a faded piece of paper in front of us on which we can only build hypothesis; ~ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
The Flare quotes by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Dark embers smolder inside me - one touch and they flare - who would have thought memory combustible, or near you bright sparks appear? ... ~ John Geddes
The Flare quotes by John Geddes
Late nights, bloodshot eyes at school, walking around like a Flare-infested Crank, ~ James Dashner
The Flare quotes by James Dashner
That's because we were never apart. Since we were kids, we were one. It has always been that way. We found a way back to each other, my love."
Luka's eyes bored into mine, a flare of possession in their glare. "And will always be that way," he said assertively. "I'm never losing you again. ~ Tillie Cole
The Flare quotes by Tillie Cole
Revolution can never be forecast; it cannot be foretold; it comes of itself. Revolution is brewing and is bound to flare up. ~ Vladimir Lenin
The Flare quotes by Vladimir Lenin
Jax's eyes fell to my shoulder, and I realised he was looking at my hair. "Nice colour," he said.
"Thanks."
"Is that your rebellion flare?" he asked.
I couldn't help it. I laughed again. "It's rated number two for 'how to scare your dad' products, online."
"Right under piercings," he said.
"Actually, I think pregnancy tests are number one," I said, and he laughed.
"And we can't forget tattoos," Jax offered.
"I've got that one covered." I raised my wrist with a smile. I had been waiting for this moment for a long time. ~ Katie Kacvinsky
The Flare quotes by Katie Kacvinsky
It was like cooking, not baking. Baking took a sense of order. Cooking took a flare, a little art, a little luck. ~ V.E Schwab
The Flare quotes by V.E Schwab
When tempers flare up reason is burned to ashes. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
The Flare quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
Prayer is never just an emergency flare or desperate anxious gamble. God's attention is not based on our performance but parental love. ~ Timothy Keller
The Flare quotes by Timothy Keller
Most of our addictions [shopping, food, bad relationships] as women flare up when we feel that we are not loved or sought after. ~ John Eldredge
The Flare quotes by John Eldredge
Just keep going - no feeling is final. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
The Flare quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
Somebody cracks a joke, a whole row laughs, one witticism sets off another, and, like matches, they flare up and burn down. ~ Joseph Roth
The Flare quotes by Joseph Roth
Forgiveness, as it turns out, is not a linear prospect. Neither is healing; both flare up and die down. So do my symptoms of schizoaffective disorder. I have tried to control these "oscillations" as my psychiatrist calls them. But what, if anything, can truly be controlled? ~ Esmé Weijun Wang
The Flare quotes by Esmé Weijun Wang
You are as ordinary as spring,' he murmured. 'As powerless as sunlight.' He ran his fingertips down her neck. 'And when I touch you, I burn,' he said, making her heart stop and a flare of wild panic light inside her. He was too close; he was getting to her. ~ Charlotte Lamb
The Flare quotes by Charlotte Lamb
If there is a solar flare or a nuclear war, a thousand cans of pickled turnips aren't going to save you. ~ Sarah Lotz
