There is an old Arabic proverb, 'When the king puts the poet on his payroll, he cuts off the tongue of the poet', so throughout the ages, people in power have liked to control music, they used to throw songwriters in jail throughout history, and were assassinated. ~ Pete Seeger
Swedish Proverb quotes by Pete Seeger
The Norse way of speaking, no one really knew what the Vikings sounded liked, they were Norsemen. The accent is really a combination of a Scandinavian accent, maybe with a Swedish accent and an old way of speaking. ~ Katheryn Winnick
Swedish Proverb quotes by Katheryn Winnick
Architecture is (in part) "the art of leaving out irrelevant details". Leaving out details, sadly, often derails into religiously ignoring details. The key word, however, is 'irrelevant': as the Chinese proverb says: people stumble over molehills, not over mountains. An architect consciously leaves out details that he or she has decided are irrelevant to the decisions to be made. ~ Gerben Wierda
Swedish Proverb quotes by Gerben Wierda
It is logical to look for a green fowl in a dark room even if you know the chance of finding a green fowl in a dark room is slim. ~ Duop Chak Wuol
Swedish Proverb quotes by Duop Chak Wuol
And as the Italian proverb says, 'Revenge is the dish which people of taste prefer to eat cold.' ~ Robert Hamer
Swedish Proverb quotes by Robert Hamer
The darkest hour of the night came just before the dawn ~ Paulo Coelho
Swedish Proverb quotes by Paulo Coelho
Laws control the lesser man. Right conduct controls the greater. ~ Mark Twain
Swedish Proverb quotes by Mark Twain
It's something I call an invisible thread. It is, as the old Chinese proverb tells us, something that connects two people who are destined to meet, regardless of time and place and circumstance. Some legends call it the red string of fate; others, the thread of destiny. ~ Laura Schroff
Swedish Proverb quotes by Laura Schroff
Be in the world, but not of the world. ~ Arab Proverb
Swedish Proverb quotes by Arab Proverb
Those who want rain, must also accept the mud. ~ Anonymous
Swedish Proverb quotes by Anonymous
The first thing I see when I get home from the hospital after midnight is the glint of the stainless steel oven in the semidarkness of the kitchen. The air smells sweet and eggy. I walk to the oven and pull open the door. Six white ramekins hold six perfect-looking crème caramels, and I wonder if they're safe to eat. It's been more than three hours since I turned off the oven. I remember a Swedish chef telling me years ago when I worked as a prep cook that unrefrigerated food will keep for four hours, but he also cleaned his fingernails with the tip of his chef's knife, so who knows.
I pick up one of the dishes and sniff it. It smells fine. Without taking off my coat, I dig into a drawer for a spoon and eat the crème caramel in five seconds flat. The texture is silky and it tastes sweet and custardy, if not perfect. I pull the rest of the dishes from the oven to put in the fridge, telling myself one was enough. An extra treat at the end of a hard day. I've put three ramekins into the refrigerator when I can't stand it and dig into the second, eating more slowly this time, slipping out of my coat, savoring the custard on my tongue. Two is definitely enough, I'm thinking as I lick the inside of the cup, two is perfect. I'm picking up the remaining cup to put in the fridge but I turn instead, head for the bedroom with ramekin in hand. At least wait until you've gotten undressed and in bed, I told myself, surely you can wait. I make it as far as the doorway and I'm digging m ~ Jennie Shortridge
Swedish Proverb quotes by Jennie Shortridge
According to Dieter Hellfeld, a member of the Swedish Academy ~ Roberto Bolano
Swedish Proverb quotes by Roberto Bolano
I only meant, you know, you shouldn't be wasting your time on imbeciles. I know how hard it is to find the right person, but that's no reason to exhaustively work your way through all the wrong people. You seem to be living your romantic life by some kind of process of elimination. It's like matching a Louis Quatorze armchair with one of those plastic patio tables. It simply doesn't work." "Oh, I see," Bel said. "I'm an armchair, is that it?" "A Louis Quatorze armchair," I qualified. "And my boyfriends are patio tables." "Actually," I remembered, "this one's more like one of those self-assembly Swedish wardrobes. ~ Paul Murray
Swedish Proverb quotes by Paul Murray
I count myself fortunate to be able to contribute to this work; and the great interest which the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has shown in my work and the recognition that it has paid to my past successes, convince me that I am not on the wrong track. ~ Pieter Zeeman
Swedish Proverb quotes by Pieter Zeeman
There is an old African proverb that says if you want to go quickly, go alone, if you want to go far, go together. We have to go far, quickly, and that means we have to quickly find a way to change the world's consciousness about exactly what we are facing and how we have to work to solve it. ~ Al Gore
Swedish Proverb quotes by Al Gore
It is sufficient to say, according to the proverb, that here is God's plenty. ~ John Dryden
Swedish Proverb quotes by John Dryden
When you begin a journey of revenge, start by digging two graves: one for your enemy, and one for yourself. ~ Jodi Picoult
Swedish Proverb quotes by Jodi Picoult
Writing for money and reservation of copyright are, at bottom, the ruin of literature. No one writes anything that is worth writing, unless he writes entirely for the sake of his subject. What in inestimable boon it would be, if in every branch of literature there were only a few books, but those excellent! This can never happen as long as money is to be made by writing. It seems as though the money lay under a curse; for every author degenerates as soon as he begins to put a pen to paper in any way for the sake of gain. The best works of the greatest men all come from the time when they had to write for nothing or for very little. And here, too, that Spanish proverb holds good, which declares that honour and money are not to be found in the same purse--honra y provecho no caben en un saco. The reason why Literature is in such a bad plight nowadays is simply and solely that people write books to make money. A man who is in want sits down and writes a book, and the public is stupid enough to buy it. The secondary effect of this is the ruin of language. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Swedish Proverb quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
Indeed, there is pain when spring buds burst..."
Wasn't there a Swedish poet who had said something like that? Or was she Finnish? ~ Jostein Gaarder
Swedish Proverb quotes by Jostein Gaarder
Faced with what seems like an impossible task, a group of folks will do well to remember the African proverb: When spider webs unite they can tie up a lion. ~ Johnnetta B. Cole
Swedish Proverb quotes by Johnnetta B. Cole
Markus definitely wasn't comfortable. He was sorry about having long legs; as regrets go, it certainly was a useless one.* Not to mention another fact that amped up his torture: there's nothing worse than being seated next to a woman you're dying with desire to look at. The show was to his left, where she was, not on stage. Not only that, but what was he seeing? It was so-so. The fact that it was a Swedish play wasn't exactly helping matters! Had she done it on purpose? As if that weren't enough, the playwright had studied in Uppsala. Might as well have dinner at his parents'. ~ David Foenkinos
Swedish Proverb quotes by David Foenkinos
Who lies for you will lie against you. ~ Bosnian Proverb
Swedish Proverb quotes by Bosnian Proverb
Good things come to those who wait. English Proverb ~ Bey Deckard
Swedish Proverb quotes by Bey Deckard
If your mirror be broken, look into still water; but have a care that you do not fall in. - Hindu Proverb. ~ Rudyard Kipling
Swedish Proverb quotes by Rudyard Kipling
Live your life according to your income and you will find treasure ~ Ravi Sathasivam / Sri Lanka
Swedish Proverb quotes by Ravi Sathasivam / Sri Lanka
I had rather face wild beasts and diseases than the perils of civilization.
There is a proverb, which Tom was kind enough not to voice: be careful what you wish for. Unfortunately, not only did I get it, but so did those around me. ~ Marie Brennan
Swedish Proverb quotes by Marie Brennan
So always avoid banality. That is, avoid illustrating the author's words and remarks. If you want to create a true masterpiece you must always avoid beautiful lies: the truths on the calender under each date you find a proverb or saying such as: "He who is good to others will be happy." But this is not true. It is a lie. The spectator, perhaps, is content. The spectator likes easy truths. But we are not there to please or pander to the spectator. We are here to tell the truth. ~ Jerzy Grotowski
Swedish Proverb quotes by Jerzy Grotowski
Theories cannot claim to be indestructible. They are only the plough which the ploughman uses to draw his furrow and which he has every right to discard for another one, of improved design, after the harvest. To be this ploughman, to see my labours result in the furtherance of scientific progress, was the height of my ambition, and now the Swedish Academy of Sciences has come, at this harvest, to add the most brilliant of crowns. ~ Paul Sabatier
Swedish Proverb quotes by Paul Sabatier
The Swedish language combines the strong manhood of the German with the delicate beauty of the Italian. ~ Bayard Taylor
Swedish Proverb quotes by Bayard Taylor
A French proverb says 'Wait until it is night before saying that it has been a fine day.' To tell it more precise, wait till the clock strikes the midnight! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Swedish Proverb quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
An old Celtic proverb boldly places death right at the center of life. 'Death is the middle of a long life,' they used to say. Ancient people did things like that; they put death at the center instead of casting it out of sight and leaving such an important subject until the last possible moment. Of course, they lived close to nature and couldn't help but see how the forest grew from fallen trees and how death seemed to replenish life from fallen members. Only the unwise and the overly fearful think that death is the blind enemy of life. ~ Michael Meade
Swedish Proverb quotes by Michael Meade
Sweden had paternity-leave policies in place for years but found that few men were taking advantage of the benefit. While women felt comfortable taking time off to be with baby, men worried that they would look less dedicated to their careers if they did the same. So the Swedish government implemented a "use it or lose it" policy, mandating that the country's thirteen-month parental leave cannot only be used by one parent – the other parent must use at least two months of the leave, or both lose those months entirely. Today 85% of Swedish fathers take paternity leave. The policy has helped redefine notions of masculinity and femininity in the already-egalitarian country. ~ Emily Matchar
