[Psi waves travel far and wide
Faster than the speed of light
Limitless is their domain
Time does not their rate detain.] ~ Marcha A. Fox
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Marcha A. Fox
The rockets set the bony meadows afire, turned rock to lava, turned wood to charcoal, transmuted water to steam, made sand and silica into green glass which lay like shattered mirrors reflecting the invasion, all about. The rockets came like drums, beating in the night. The rockets came like locusts, swarming and settling in blooms of rosy smoke. ~ Ray Bradbury
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Ray Bradbury
There's always been a little bit of tension between the writers of science fiction literature and then science-fiction televised shows or movies, partly because they have a different dynamic. ~ John Scalzi
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by John Scalzi
Nox didn't say a word. He waited, counting the seconds in his mind. Sometimes you counted bullets and sometimes you counted time. Either one could kill you. ~ Dean F. Wilson

Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Kevin J. Anderson
My most educated analysis, with all means of science and technology in mind, is that it's magic," Alex said. "There's no other possible explanation!" -Alex Bailey, The Land of Stories; The Wishing Spell ~ Chris Colfer The Land Of Stories
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Chris Colfer The Land Of Stories
Intellectuals always make a fuss about nothing. ~ Liu Cixin
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Liu Cixin
I ended up working on "Chicago Hope" and other things, but always with the idea that, eventually, I would want to take what I'd learned in character drama and try to apply that to the genre that I love, which is science fiction and "The Twilight Zone" type mysteries. ~ Remi Aubuchon
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Remi Aubuchon
As a science fiction writer who began as a fan, I do not use my fiction as a disguised way to criticize the reality of the present. I feel that the greatest appeal of science fiction is the creation of numerous imaginary worlds outside of reality. I've always felt that the greatest and most beautiful stories in the history of humanity were not sung by wandering bards or written by playwrights and novelists, but told by science. The stories of science are far more magnificent, grand, involved, profound, thrilling, strange, terrifying, mysterious, and even emotional, compared to the stories told by literature. Only, these wonderful stories are locked in cold equations that most do not know how to read.

The creation myths of the various peoples and religions of the world pale when compared to the glory of the big bang. The three-billion-year history of life's evolution from self-reproducing molecules to civilization contains twists and romances that cannot be matched by any myth or epic. There is also the poetic vision of space and time in relativity, the weird subatomic world of quantum mechanics … these wondrous stories of science all possess an irresistible attraction. Through the medium of science fiction, I seek only to create my own worlds using the power of imagination, and to make known the poetry of Nature in those worlds, to tell the romantic legends that have unfolded between Man and Universe. ~ Liu Cixin
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Liu Cixin
I like science fiction. I took all the accelerated classes in school. I'm kind of a dork. ~ Anson Mount
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Anson Mount
Is this neuro-bot really supposed to be her, this creature, this thing, compiled of the ghosts of human data, the replicas of their past? ~ Bremer Acosta
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Bremer Acosta
The science fiction approach doesn't mean it's always about the future; it's an awareness that this is different. ~ Neal Stephenson
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Neal Stephenson
Jungle sex," I panted.
"Let's go swimming," Shade said at the same time.
We stared at each other. He grinned like a loon. I blinked and then grinned also.
"I like the way you thing, starshine. ~ Amanda Bouchet
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Amanda Bouchet

Another oral exam, huh?' Peter said.
'Shut up, Peter,' said Valentine.
'You should relax and enjoy it,' said Peter. 'It could be worse.'
'I don't know how.'
'It could be an anal exam. ~ Orson Scott Card
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Orson Scott Card
Cam shook his head. 'Do you ever listen to how much crazy shit comes out of your mouth?'
'Nope.' I hooked my fingers into his waistband and pulled him closer. 'Nobody does. That's why I remain undiagnosed.' ~ Lisa Henry
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Lisa Henry
You made an offering of a battle of gods and demons," Joshua said. "That kind of offer does not go unnoticed. You awoke the souls of your kinsmen inside the mortals they have become. ~ Eric Nierstedt
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Eric Nierstedt
Ooh, sweetie, we all know people only see what they want to see. ~ Trevor Alan Foris
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Trevor Alan Foris
But in order to be an iconoclast, an author must be more than merely aware of the idol he wishes to destroy. He must be intimate with it and understand it in all its aspects. This means that he must have devoted serious thought to it, and have beliefs of his own which will stand up in the place of the broken idol. In other words, any child can complain, but it takes an adult to clash with accepted beliefs ... an adult with ideas. ~ Alfred Bester
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Alfred Bester
The living stayed home, haunting the world of the dead like ghosts. ~ Neal Stephenson
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Neal Stephenson
I have 20 or 30 books completely plotted out in my mind - mysteries, thrillers, horror, romance, science fiction. You name it. ~ Christopher Paolini
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Christopher Paolini
It's impossible to walk through solid rock ... You have to walk between the molecules that make up the rock. ~ J.M. Dattilo
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by J.M. Dattilo
Cat Rambo: Where do you think the perennial debate between what is literary fiction and what is genre is sited?

Norman Spinrad: I think it's a load of crap. See my latest column in Asimov's, particularly re The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I detest the whole concept of genre. A piece of fiction is either a good story well told or it isn't. The supposed dichotomy between "literary fiction" and "popular fiction" is ridiculous. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Mailer, did not have serious literary intent? As writers of serious literary intent, they didn't want to be "popular," meaning sell a lot of books? They wanted to be unpopular and have terrible sales figures to prove they were "serious"?

I say this is bullshit and I say the hell with it. "Genre," if it means anything at all, is a restrictive commercial requirement. "Westerns" must be set in the Old West. "Mysteries" must have a detective solving a crime, usually murder. "Nurse Novels" must have a nurse. And so forth.

In the strictly literary sense, neither science fiction nor fantasy are "genres." They are anti-genres. They can be set anywhere and anywhen except in the mimetic here and now or a real historical period. They are the liberation of fiction from the constraints of "genre" in an absolute literary sense. ~ Norman Spinrad
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Norman Spinrad
Geeks are not the world's rowdiest people. We're quiet and introspective, and usually more comfortable communing with our keyboards or a good book than each other. Our idea of how to paint the
Emerald City red involves light liquor, heavy munchies, and marathon sessions of video games of the 'giant robots shooting each other and everything else in sight' variety. We debate competing lines of software or gaming consoles with passion, and dissect every movie, television show, and novel in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres.

With as many of us as there are in this town, people inevitably find ways to cater to us when we get in the mood to spend our hard-earned dollars. Downtown Seattle boasts grandiose geek magnets, like the Experience Music Project and the Experience Science Fiction museum, but it has much humbler and far more obscure attractions too, like the place we all went to for our ship party that evening: a hole-in-the-wall bar called the Electric Penguin on Capitol Hill. ~ Angela Korra'ti
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Angela Korra'ti
The Place of No Shadows, in Isaac Asimovs Science Fiction Magazine (1990) In our Universe, matter is arranged in a hierarchy of structures by successive integrations. ~ Francois Jacob
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Francois Jacob
An author has a gift that is leant to others. seek not to teach; - entertain! ~ Barry Woodham
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Barry Woodham
Because some of my at-home life was rough and lonely, I often looked to escape into my imagination. Science fiction provided a deep well to pull from and was something easily accessible to me. ~ Keahu Kahuanui
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Keahu Kahuanui
You know what it is like to wake up in the middle of a bunch of corpses with a little girl in your arms scared to death?-Enyo ~ Carolina Cody Aldaz
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Carolina Cody Aldaz
In a flurry of sharp brocade coattails and gossamer gowns cut in the Neo-Baroque fashion, the crowd turns back to their conversations, the perfect epitome of what all Aristocrats are like - bored and quickly dissatisfied with the latest trends. ~ A.L. Davroe
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by A.L. Davroe
That's the difference between good military commanders and good politicians, John Geary. You've shown me that a good military commander spends the lives of their people reluctantly and with regret, but does spend them when necessary. The good politician does the same thing with principles. There aren't any fine burials for sacrificed principles, though. ~ Jack Campbell
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Jack Campbell
A jellyfish, if you watch it long enough, begins to look like a heart beating. It doesn't matter what kind: the blooded Atolla with its flashing siren lights, the frilly flower hat variety, or the near-transparent moon jelly, Aurelia aurita. It's their pulse, the way they contract swiftly, than release. Like a ghost heart-- a heart you can see right through, right into some other world where everything you ever lost as gone to hide.
Jellyfish don't even have hearts, of course-- no heart, no brain, no bone, no blood. But watch them for a while. You will see them beating. ~ Ali Benjamin
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Ali Benjamin
Even thought you can't see it, my son, things are changing. Things ALWAYS change, given enough time and pressure. The very thought of that is scary to some, but change is absolutely nothing to be afraid of. It is a simple fact of life. ~ EXO Books
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by EXO Books
At this moment, in this place, the shifting action potential in my neurons cascade into certain arrangements, patterns, thoughts; they flow down my spine, branch into my arms, my fingers, until muscles twitch and thought is translated into motion; mechanical levers are pressed; electrons are rearranged; marks are made on paper.

At another time, in another place, light strikes the marks, reflects into a pair of high-precision optical instruments sculpted by nature after billions of years of random mutations; upside-down images are formed against two screens made up of millions of light-sensitive cells, which translate light into electrical pulses that go up the optic nerves, cross the chiasm, down the optic tracts, and into the visual cortex, where the pulses are reassembled into letters, punctuation marks, words, sentences, vehicles, tenors, thoughts.

The entire system seems fragile, preposterous, science fictional. ~ Ken Liu
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Ken Liu
The overriding sense of Tokyo ... is that it is a city devoted to the new, sped up in a subtle but profound way: a postmodern science-fiction story set ten minutes in the future. ~ David Rakoff
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by David Rakoff
He slept that night the sleep of a successfully stubborn man. ~ Isaac Asimov
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Isaac Asimov
Octavia Butler often described herself as an outsider, but within science fiction, she was loved as an insider, someone who was a fan first and came to S.F. writing as an enthusiastic reader. ~ Karen Joy Fowler
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Karen Joy Fowler
Hopis have lived in America longer than anyone. We wanted to explore the concept of Earthly visitation through the eyes of people who have also witnessed the rapid evolution of modern culture. For us, their beliefs ring true on so many levels. Hopi prophecy speaks to the destiny of man...in a universe where we are not alone. ~ T.J. Wolf
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by T.J. Wolf
But I assure you, a government that is willing to put their own children in danger, their own future, just to see their potential, is twisted. We do not grab babies, newborns, and throw them out of windows just to see if they sprout wings. ~ S. Elizabeth Dover
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by S. Elizabeth Dover
No matter what decade science fiction comes from, it's representing the present. ~ Don Hertzfeldt
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Don Hertzfeldt
Many of us imagine carrying out dramatic changes in impoverished places, but few have the patience for the small, time-consuming, and seemingly endless details that make it possible. ~ Deni Ellis Béchard
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Deni Ellis Béchard
The once-science-fiction notion of hyper-connectivity - where we are all constantly connected to social networks and other bubbling streams of digital data - has rapidly become a widespread reality. ~ Geoff Mulgan
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Geoff Mulgan
I maintain that cultural sensitivity should be replaced by cultural awareness. Awareness implies research, consideration, thought, and judiciousness ...
Sensitivity denies equal access to language. It segregates and censors based on the background of the writer rather than the content of the story. No society can embrace cultural sensitivity and retain full capacity for freedom of speech. ~ Scott M. Roberts
Science Fiction Scanner Darkly quotes by Scott M. Roberts
I'm sorry, Bill, I thought you said something about aliens? Did you give up the menthols for marijuana? Or maybe they now have flavored joints as well? ~ Daniel P. Douglas
