The future's here, we are it, we are on our own ~ John Perry Barlow
Robert Hall Weir quotes by John Perry Barlow
There was a difference between being proud of a grand fireplace in your hall and walking into the flames. ~ Robert Jordan
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Jordan
There was the bulge and the glitter, and there was the cold grip way down in the stomach as though somebody had laid hold of something in there, in the dark which is you, with a cold hand in a cold rubber glove. It was like the second when you come home late at night and see the yellow envelope of the telegram sticking out from under your door and you lean and pick it up, but don't open it yet, not for a second. While you stand there in the hall, with the envelope in your hand, you feel there's an eye on you, a great big eye looking straight at you from miles and dark and through walls and houses and through your coat and vest and hide and sees you huddled up way inside, in the dark which is you, inside yourself, like a clammy, sad little fetus you carry around inside yourself. The eye knows what's in the envelope, and it is watching you to see you when you open it and know, too. But the clammy, sad little fetus which is you way down in the dark which is you too lifts up its sad little face and its eyes are blind, and it shivers cold inside you for it doesn't want to know what is in that envelope. It wants to lie in the dark and not know, and be warm in its not-knowing. ~ Robert Penn Warren
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Penn Warren
Bertrand Russell had given a talk on the then new quantum mechanics, of whose wonders he was most appreciative. He spoke hard and earnestly in the New Lecture Hall. And when he was done, Professor Whitehead, who presided, thanked him for his efforts, and not least for 'leaving the vast darkness of the subject unobscured'. ~ J. Robert Oppenheimer
Robert Hall Weir quotes by J. Robert Oppenheimer
I love my dad and respect him and miss him, but I never hung around my father that much because my dad was a lawyer and engineer, and he really didn't understand what I was about. I was supposed to go to law school at UCLA - I was admitted - and instead of going to law school, I went on the road with a band. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
Inductee in the Vintner's Hall of Fame ~ Robert Mondavi
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Mondavi
I pretty much spent my twenties as a musician and taking acting classes. I loved it. I was at UCLA getting As and Bs in English and creative writing, basically trying to stay out of the Army. All I really wanted to do was play music. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
In the power of fixing the attention lies the most precious of the intellectual habits. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
Call things by their right names - Glass of brandy and water! That is the current, but not the appropriate name; ask for a glass of liquid fire and distilled damnation. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
Susan came down the hall in a white dress that fit her well. She looked like she was receiving an Academy Award for stunningness. I ~ Robert B. Parker
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert B. Parker
Besieged by lawsuits that threatened to engulf almost everyone at the White House, Clinton assistants shunned paper or e-mail records of their daily deliberations. One told me that he would go down the hall to confer with his division chief face to face rather than discuss an issue on the telephone. ~ Robert Dallek
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Dallek
Mankind are apt to be strongly prejudiced in favor of whatever is countenanced by antiquity, enforced by authority, and recommended by custom. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
One of the great things about the 'Iron Man' franchise is that they employ fascinating actors who don't necessarily do action movies. Before 'Iron Man' you didn't associate Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow with those kinds of films. There's an emphasis on repartee and wit. ~ Rebecca Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Rebecca Hall
In 2013 there were 7,427 poetry readings in April, many on a Thursday. For anyone born in 1928 who pays attention to poetry, the numerousness is astonishing. In April 1948, there were 15 readings in the United States, 12 by Robert Frost. So I claim. The figures are imaginary, but you get the point. ~ Donald Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Donald Hall
We should be more anxious that our afflictions should benefit us than that they should be speedily removed from us. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
Respectfully, the civil rights movement for people with disabilities is modeled on the African American civil rights movement. I'm old enough to remember 1964. I was a junior in high school. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
A friend should be one in whose understanding and virtue we can equally confide, and whose opinion we can value at once for its justness and its sincerity. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
My father made me take three years of Latin in high school. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
I believe that it was the highest privilege of my life to wear the uniform of the United States Marine Corps. I don't believe the country owes me anything for doing so, but that my serving was partial payment on what I owe our country - a debt that can be never fully paid, but with my life. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
In preparing the soil for planting, you will need several tools. Dynamite would be a beautiful thing to use, but it would have a tendency to get the dirt into the front-hall and track up the stairs. ~ Robert Benchley
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Benchley
This book by Dr. Yasuda, while ostensibly about haiku, in reality penetrates deeply into the totality of this living spirit of Japan. It deals with those aspects which have produced and maintained haiku into the present day. The important key to understanding comes with the realization that in Japanese art one strives always for the absolute. Of the absolute there is no question of degree; it is either attained or lost. Most often, to be sure, it is not attained, but it is the constant striving toward and awareness of that high goal which gives strength and vitality to this living aesthetic spirit which has so impressed me in Japan.

(Robert B. Hall, Foreword, p. x) ~ Kenneth Yasuda
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Kenneth Yasuda
Foreign policy is like hitting a baseball: if you fail 70 percent of the time, you go to the Hall of Fame. ~ Robert Kagan
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Kagan
The way to go to the circus, however, is with someone who has seen perhaps one theatrical performance before in his life and that in the High School hall ... The scales of sophistication are struck from your eyes and you see in the circus a gathering of men and women who are able to do things as a matter of course which you couldn't do if your life depended on it. ~ Robert Benchley
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Benchley
Of all the species of literary composition, perhaps biography is the most delightful. The attention concentrated on one individual gives a unity to the materials of which it is composed, which is wanting in general history. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
It never was about the musician or the instrument - it was about the laser notes in a hall of mirrors, the music itself. It was going to change the world for the better and it has. Maybe not as fast or as much as we wanted, but it has and it still will. Whether your name is Mozart, or Django Reinhardt, or Robert Johnson, or Jimi Hendrix, or whoever is next; who you are doesn't matter so long as you can open that conduit and let the music come through. It is the burning edge, whatever it sounds like and whoever is playing it. It is the noisy, messy, silly, invincible voice of life that comes through the LP on the turn-table, the transistor radio, or the Bose in your new Lexus that makes you want to get up out of whatever you are stuck in and dance. It is Dionysus and the Maenads all over again. No one can control it and I pity whoever tries. I am old now and only a house cat sunning herself in the window - but I was a tigress once, and I remember. I still remember. ~ G.J. Paterson
Robert Hall Weir quotes by G.J. Paterson
In matters of conscience, first thoughts are best. In matters of prudence, last thoughts are best. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
There are a few chances in life where you get to take a different road. I think it's important to stay creative, look at the moment, and look at the future. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
If you support diversity and think shows should give a portrayal of what America truly looks like, then performers with disabilities must be included in that equation ... People have been very good at being politically correct. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
'CSI's been a great blessing for me. It's been a platform that's allowed me to go around the country and the world, really, and speak on issues of disability, but I've never - I'm a professional actor, so I studied for years; I do theater. I never want to disrespect what got me here. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
When a movie opened - if you lived in New York, you would see it at Radio City Music Hall where it would play a couple of weeks, and then you moved on to the next movie. Now you can see it the rest of your life - it's going to be on Netflix and DVD. ~ Robert Osborne
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Osborne
And as far as possible for sickness or fatigue, constrain yourself to eat in the hall before your people, for this shall bring great benefit and honour to you. ~ Robert Grosseteste
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Grosseteste
But first Hitler, taken in by Mussolini's mythmaking, attempted a "march" of his own. On November 8, 1923, during a nationalist rally in a Munich beer hall, the Bürgerbräukeller, Hitler attempted to kidnap the leaders of the Bavarian government and force them to support a coup d'état against the federal government in Berlin. He believed that if he took control of Munich and declared a new national government, the Bavarian civil and military leaders would be forced by public opinion to support him. He was equally convinced that the local army authorities would not oppose the Nazi coup because the World War I hero General Ludendorff was marching beside him.

Hitler underestimated military fidelity to the chain of command. The conservative Bavarian minister-president Gustav von Kahr gave orders to stop Hitler's coup, by force if necessary. The police fired on the Nazi marchers on November 9 as they approached a major square (possibly returning a first shot from Hitler's side). Fourteen putschists and four policemen were killed. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned,8 along with other Nazis and their sympathizers. The august General Ludendorff was released on his own recognizance. Hitler's "Beer Hall Putsch" was thus put down so ignominiously by the conservative rulers of Bavaria that he resolved never again to try to gain power through force. That meant remaining at least superficially within constitutional legality, though the Nazis never gave up the selective violence t ~ Robert O. Paxton
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert O. Paxton
I have a lot of musician friends. I worked in radio as a music director, and I know everybody hears about the George Straits and the Garth Brooks and the Kenny Chesneys and all that, but for every major star, there are thousands who didn't quite make it. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
All the Utopias - Brook Farm, Robert Owen's sanctuary of chatter, Upton Sinclair's Helicon Hall - and their regulation end in scandal, feuds, poverty, griminess, disillusion. ~ Sinclair Lewis
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Sinclair Lewis
The first time I almost died was surfing: I got hit on the head with a board. I went under and started swimming until I hit the bottom of the ocean. I thought, 'Oh my God, I'm going the wrong way. Do I have enough air to get back up?' If you're a surfer, you know the feeling. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
On Decoration Day, while everyone else in town was at the cemetery decorating the graves of our Glorious War Dead, Willie Beaner and me, Robert Burns Hewitt, took Mabel Cramm's bloomers and run them up the flagpole in front of the town hall. That was the beginning of all my troubles. ~ Katherine Paterson
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Katherine Paterson
It used to be that one poet in each generation performed poems in public. In the twenties, it was Vachel Lindsay, who sometimes dropped to his knees in the middle of a poem. Then Robert Frost took over, and made his living largely on the road. ~ Donald Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Donald Hall
We are to seek wisdom and understanding only in the length of days. ~ Robert Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Hall
A drunk truck driver ran over me. I was in a Volkswagen. It was horrible. It sounds like a cliche, but anything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I give a lot of credit to my dad, who was a very strong guy. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
Command that your marshal be careful to be present over the household, and especially in the hall, to keep the household, within doors and without, respectable, without dispute or noise, or bad words. ~ Robert Grosseteste
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert Grosseteste
I do everything I can to be the best actor I can be, the best musician I can be. I try to take risks; I try not to let fear run my life. ~ Robert David Hall
Robert Hall Weir quotes by Robert David Hall
I have performed the following experiment in workshops for nearly 40 years now: Everybody in the class is asked to describe the hall they passed through to get to the classroom. I must have tried this several hundred times by now, and I have never encountered two people who agreed totally about what was or was not in the hall, the color of the walls, or any similar data. We do not walk through the "same" hall: we walk through a reality-tunnel constructed by our imprinted, conditioned and learned brain circuits.

The same experiment works with hearing, and other senses, as well as with vision and memory. Try it with a half-dozen friends. Let somebody with a watch say "Go!" and then all of you be silent and listen for one full minute - 60 surprisingly long seconds. You will all hear some sounds nobody else hears and miss some sounds everybody else caught.
