Many Hollywoodians may have good taste and an interest in culture but they certainly hide it. They're afraid they'll be branded as sissies if someone finds out they write poetry or own a painting. They're so timid about culture. ~ Vincent Price
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Vincent Price
I say is someone in there?' The voice is the young post-New formalist from
Pittsburgh who affects Continental and wears an ascot that won't stay tight, with that
hesitant knocking of when you know perfectly well someone's in there, the
bathroom door composed of thirty-six that's three times a lengthwise twelve
recessed two-bevelled squares in a warped rectangle of steam-softened wood, not
quite white, the bottom outside corner right here raw wood and mangled from
hitting the cabinets' bottom drawer's wicked metal knob, through the door and
offset 'Red' and glowering actors and calendar and very crowded scene and pubic
spirals of pale blue smoke from the elephant-colored rubble of ash and little
blackened chunks in the foil funnel's cone, the smoke's baby-blanket blue that's sent
her sliding down along the wall past knotted washcloth, towel rack, blood-flower
wallpaper and intricately grimed electrical outlet, the light sharp bitter tint of a heated
sky's blue that's left her uprightly fetal with chin on knees in yet another North
American bathroom, deveiled, too pretty for words, maybe the Prettiest Girl Of All
Time (Prettiest G.O.A.T.), knees to chest, slew-footed by the radiant chill of the
claw-footed tub's porcelain, Molly's had somebody lacquer the tub in blue, lacquer,
she's holding the bottle, recalling vividly its slogan for the past generation was The
Choice of a Nud ~ David Foster Wallace
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by David Foster Wallace
The intriguing history of American applied toponymy includes a few notoriously unpopular sweeping decisions a year after President Benjamin Harrison created the Board on Geographic Names in 1890. Harrison acted at the behest of several government agencies, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, which was responsible for mapping the nation's coastline, harbors, and coastal waterways. Troubled by inconsistencies in spelling, board members voted to replace centre with center, drop the ugh from names ending in orough, and shorten the suffix burgh to burg. Overnight, Centreview (in Mississippi) became Centerview, Isleborough (in Maine) became Isleboro, and Pittsburgh (in Pennsylvania) lost its final h and a lot of civic pride. The city was chartered in 1816 as Pittsburg, but the Post Office Department added the extra letter sometime later. Although both spellings were used locally and the shorter version had been the official name, many Pittsburghers complained bitterly about the cost of reprinting stationery and repainting signs. Making the spelling consistent with Harrisburg, they argued, was hardly a good reason for truncating the Iron City's moniker--although Harrisburg was the state capital, it was a smaller and economically less important place. Local officials protested that the board had exceeded its authority. The twenty-year crusade to restore the final h bore fruit in 1911, when the board reversed itself--but only for Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Mark Monmonier
Broadway producers are happy to have a big Hollywood name they can post on the marquee, but most of them assume that television and film stars really can't handle stage work. Too often, they're right. ~ Rue McClanahan
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Rue McClanahan
It would be nice if areas could be revitalised - like places in the U.S. such as Pittsburgh, for example, which have been transformed through shale. There you have shiny cars in a shiny city because of the development of shale in an old industrial heartland. ~ Jim Ratcliffe
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Jim Ratcliffe
What's there to be scared about? A post-apocalyptic city with no government or security, surrounded by a desert and swarming with Cranks. I mean, come on. Don't be a sissy. ~ James Dashner
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by James Dashner
... you know what was really messing me up when I got down there to Pittsburgh? Was how young he seemed. He kept asking me things like what did I think of Kanye West's music, and did I think he should hold on to Kevin Garnett in this fantasy basketball league he was in or trade him. And how he wasn't just in this league; he was commissioner of it. Like that was some big mark of distinction: commissioner of make-believe. And I wanted to slam him, one-handed, against the wall, the way he used to do to me, and scream in his face, 'Stop it! Act your age!' ... I didn't do it, though. I wanted to, but I couldn't. 'Honor thy father,' you know what I'm saying? So instead, I grabbed my car keys, got out of there, and took off. It was messing with my head, you know? You get out of there alive, more or less, wait for your father to come see you at the hospital you're stuck at, and when you finally go to see him, he's younger than you are. ~ Wally Lamb
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Wally Lamb
The Home Secretary, a young man of thirty-seven, impossible to ignore, who, from his inappropriate post, had pelted the Prime Minister during the crisis with ideas on naval and military strategy, all of them quite sound, had produced an astonishingly accurate prediction of the future course of the fighting, and who had no doubts whatever about what needed to be done. The Home Secretary was Winston Churchill. ~ Barbara W. Tuchman
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Barbara W. Tuchman
Like the worthless dogs that are his countrymen, my husband believed that his penis was wasted if he was faithful to just one woman. - At the Sound of the Last Post ~ Petina Gappah
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Petina Gappah
The dead die hard, trespassers on the beyond, they must take the place as they find it, the shafts and manholes back into the muck, till such time as the lord of the manor incurs through his long acquiescence a duty of care in respect of them. They are free among the dead by all means, then their troubles are over, their natural troubles. But the debt of nature, that scandalous post-obit on one's own estate, can no more be discharged by kicking the bucket than descent can be made into the same stream twice. This is a true saying. ~ Samuel Beckett
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Samuel Beckett
When I got discharged from the Army, I made a vow never to go back on an Army post. No big deal, just a simple lifelong vow. ~ William Goldman
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by William Goldman
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed.
(I'm flogging a dead horse w/ this one but this is the 1st time I've even seen this quotes feature! I just wanted to post something.) ~ Rupert Brooke
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Rupert Brooke
Where there is a brave man, in the thickest of the fight, there is the post of honor. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Henry David Thoreau
First of all, when I was making the decision, I never thought that Pittsburgh fans would want me back. Every time I played there, they were booing me every time I touched the puck. I didn't think it would be such a big deal that I didn't sign with Pittsburgh. ~ Jaromir Jagr
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Jaromir Jagr
He left to take up his post, and as he went
he said 'Sleep, Lily. I'§ watch the doors.' I never slept peacefully before
that night. I didn't know how to rest, and trust I was safe. I slept that day
as I'd never slept before. ~ Cassandra Clare
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Cassandra Clare
Rather be frumpy than vulgar! Much. Frumps are often celebrities in disguise
but a person of vulgar appearance is vulgar all through. ~ Emily Post
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Emily Post
We can see beyond the present shadows of war in the Middle East to a new world order where the strong work together to deter and stop aggression. This was precisely Franklin Roosevelt's and Winston Churchill's vision for peace for the post-war period. ~ Dick Gephardt
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Dick Gephardt
Dude. Post-apocalyptic world. Who does job applications anymore?"
"I do."
I squint at it, then him. "What are you paying me?" I angle.
"Dude. Post-apocalyptic world. Who does money anymore."
I snicker. First sign of any sense of humor he's shown. Then I remember where I am and why. I wad it up and throw it at him. It bounces off his chest. ~ Karen Marie Moning
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Karen Marie Moning
Science fiction is the search for a definition of mankind and his status in the universe which will stand in our advanced but confused state of knowledge (science), and is characteristically cast in the Gothic or post Gothic mode. ~ Brian Aldiss
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Brian Aldiss
I married a woman from New Orleans, so I had family here. Post-Katrina, I had a number of friends call me up and say they wanted to do something to help the community - not just Habitat for Humanity or Red Cross, we've done that, but what can we do for the community. ~ James Coulter
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by James Coulter
My color schemes were limited to what would go with the pewter-gray gown ... except for the bridesmaids' gowns. I'd already decided that they were going to be a distinctly nonmatchy lemon yellow that Jolene's aunt Vonnie would have to special-order. The kind of yellow one would find on takeout menus or particularly urgent Post-it notes.
In fact, if the outdoor lighting failed, we could use the color of their dresses to illuminate the ceremony.
And yes, i had to use a vendor who hated me, because Vonnie held the only pattern left in the continental United States for the "Ruffle and Dreams," the very dress I'd had to wear in Jolene's wedding. Revenge would would be mine, for a few months, until i revealed the dove-gray bridesmaids' dresses i actually planned for them to wear. ~ Molly Harper
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Molly Harper
For your own professionalism, reputation & appearance, it really is ok to NOT post every #video, picture, event or show on social media.
On the contrary, holding back, waiting or not posting certain things all together can help much more than hurt. ~ Loren Weisman
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Loren Weisman
Consider the many ways your content can be repurposed and be published in a variety of places. One of your content pieces can start with a blog post on your site, then be turned into an article in a digital magazine, be used to develop a chapter for your book, be part of a discussion on a podcast, be used on a YouTube video, be used as a post on LinkedIn, and so on. ~ Bill Kopatich
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Bill Kopatich
Post-Watergate morality, by which anything left private is taken as presumptive evidence of wrongdoing. ~ Charles Krauthammer
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Charles Krauthammer
As soon as we examine suicide from the standpoint of religion we immediately see it in its true light. We have been placed in this world under certain conditions and for specific purposes. But a suicide opposes the purpose of his creator; he arrives in the other world as one who has deserted his post; he must be looked upon as a rebel against God. God is our owner; we are his property; his providence works for our good. ~ Immanuel Kant
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Immanuel Kant
Love is divisible in two parts. Love a parte ante, and love a parte post: that is, in plain English, that love which is past, and that love which is to come. ~ DON SANTO
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by DON SANTO
There are major efforts being made to dismantle Social Security, the public schools, the post office - anything that benefits the population has to be dismantled. Efforts against the U.S. Postal Service are particularly surreal. ~ Noam Chomsky
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Noam Chomsky
I remember the first time I saw you," Allie said.
"I thought you smelled me first."
"Right," said Allie. "The chocolate. But then I saw you as I sat up in the dead forest, thinking I knew you. At the time, I thought I must have seen you through the windshield when our cars crashed…. But that wasn't it. I think, way back then, I was seeing you as you are now. Isn't that funny?"
"Not as funny as the way I always complained, and the way you always bossed me around!"
They embraced and held each other for a long time.
"Don't forget me," Nick said. "No matter where your life goes, no matter how old you get. And if you ever get the feeling that someone is looking over your shoulder, but there's nobody there, maybe it'll be me."
"I'll write to you," said Allie, and Nick laughed. "No really. I'll write the letter then burn it, and if I care just enough it will cross into Everlost."
"And," added Nick, "it will show up as a dead letter at that the post office Milos made cross into San Antonio!"
Allie could have stood there saying good-bye forever, because it was more than Nick she was saying good-bye to. She was leaving behind four years of half-life in a world that was both stunningly beautiful, and hauntingly dark. And she was saying good-bye to Mikey. I'll be waiting for you, he had said…. Well, if he was, maybe she wasn't saying good-bye at all.
Nick hefted the backpack on his shoulder. "Shouldn't you be heading off to Memphis?" he said. ~ Neal Shusterman
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Neal Shusterman
The odor of burning sulphur shifted on the night air, acrid, a little foul. Somewhere, the Canaan dwellers had learned of a supplier of castor - an extract from the beaver's perineal glands. Little packets containing the brown-orange mass of dried animal matter arrived from Detroit at the Post Office's "general delivery." At home, by the kerosene light, the recipients unwrapped the packets. A poor relative sometimes would be given some of the fibrous gland, bitter and smelling slightly like strong human sweat, and the rest would go into a Mason jar. Each night, as prescribed by old Burrifous through his oracle, Ronnie, a litt1e would be mixed with clear spring water. And as it gave the water a creamy, rusty look, the owner would sigh with awe and fear. The creature, wolf or man, became more real through the very specific which was to vanquish him. ~ Leslie H. Whitten Jr.
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Leslie H. Whitten Jr.
When Obama came to power, there was a lot of talk about a post-racial America. ~ Ezra Koenig
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Ezra Koenig
Accept criticism. If you do not offer your work for criticism and accept that criticism, meaning give it serious thought and attention, then you will never improve. ~ Theodora Goss
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Theodora Goss
She did not approach Caesar wrapped in a carpet, she was not a seductress, she did not use her charm to persuade the men in her life to lose their judgement, and she did not die by the bite of an asp…Yet other important elements of her career have been bypassed in the post-antique recension: she was a Skilled naval commander, a published medical authority, and an expert royal administrator who was met with adulation throughout the eastern Mediterranean, perhaps seen by some as a messianic figure, the hope for a future Eastern Mediterranean free of Roman domination. ~ Duane W. Roller
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Duane W. Roller
Your past can either cripple you or empower you. You choose. You can let your feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and shame keep you working jobs that suck your soul. Or you can go out and, with a little luck and guidance, write a new story of your life. It can be post-traumatic stress or it can be post-traumatic growth that defines you. You know as well as I do that in reality you don't have a choice.
You know as well as I do that in reality you don't have a choice. Your skeletons chase you no matter where you hide. It's about time to find your inner strength to pull through and make something of yourself. ~ Lucas Carlson
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Lucas Carlson
As to Don Juan, confess that it is the sublime of that there sort of writing; it may be bawdy, but is it not good English? It may be profligate, but is it not life, is it not the thing? Could any man have written it who has not lived in the world? and tooled in a post-chaise? in a hackney coach? in a Gondola? against a wall? in a court carriage? in a vis a vis? on a table? and under it? ~ Lord Byron
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Lord Byron
Everything is a narrative in life. I learned that early on as a reporter at the 'Washington Post.' ~ Kara Swisher
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Kara Swisher
We are living in a post-fictional era. Fictional governments are accepted without comment, and we can sit in a mosque and have a debate about the fictional port a fictional character consumes in a video game, with every gravity we would accord something quite real. ~ G. Willow Wilson
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by G. Willow Wilson
Usually when you play a team, you want to focus on one line. Pittsburgh is the only team where you have to focus on one player [Mario Lemieux]. When he's coming toward you, all you see is him. ~ Patrick Roy
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Patrick Roy
Words have power, you understand? It is in the nature of our universe. Our library itself distorts time and space on quite a grand scale. Well, when the Post Office started accumulating letters, it was storing words. In fact, what was being created was what we call a 'gevaisa', a tomb of living words. ~ Terry Pratchett
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Terry Pratchett
I went to a psychiatrist (NBC insisted we all go) and told her I had been through traumatic experiences before and understood that the kidnapping would leave "fingerprints" on me for a while. The key was knowing what to expect. If you get blind drunk, you know you're going to wake up with a hangover. By the same token, I expected post-traumatic stress symptoms - anger, irritability, a sense of isolation - and I experienced those feelings, off and on, for several months. It's like having the monkey on your back again, and being self-aware helps shake him off. ~ Richard Engel
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Richard Engel
The Stamp Act was to go into operation on the first day of November. On the previous morning, the 'New Hampshire Gazette' appeared with a deep black border and all the typographical emblems of affliction, for was not Liberty dead? ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Thomas Bailey Aldrich
My guess is that the editor [Cincinnati Post] wanted his own Jeff MacNelly (a Pulitzer winner at 24), and I didn't live up to his expectations. My Cincinnati days were pretty Kafkaesque. ~ Bill Watterson
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Bill Watterson
Control freak will be tortured by post power syndrome. ~ Toba Beta
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Toba Beta
Histhry is a post-mortem examination. It tellsye what a counthry died iv. But I'd like to know what it lived iv. ~ Finley Peter Dunne
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Finley Peter Dunne
America is a post-Christian nation only in the sense that we have built a tenement on the foundation of a palace. ~ Ron Brackin
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Ron Brackin
Money is to be sought for first of all; virtue after wealth.
[Lat., Quaerenda pecunia primum est; virtus post nummos.] ~ Horace
Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes by Horace
I find Jessica Jones a much more interesting character to write for than Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is so noble and heroic, and I don't find that as interesting as one who's really damaged and flawed and has post-traumatic stress disorder. ~ Melissa Rosenberg
