For Alwyn's grandfather, who was known as "the greatest talker in the country," used words which no one else understood, words which he did not understand, and words which do not exist, to swell a passionate theme, to confound his neighbors in an argument, and for their own sake. He would say, for example, "My farm was the very apocalypse of fertility, but the renter has rested on his oars till it is good for nothing," or "Manifest the bounty to pass the salt shaker in my direction." Something of the Bible, something of an Irish inheritance, something of a liar's anxiety, made of his most ordinary remark a strange and wearisome oratory. ~ Glenway Wescott
Pass The Salt quotes by Glenway Wescott
I've always been a character actor, although I'm not quite sure what that means. All my scripts are absolutely covered in notes, so any time I say anything - even 'pass the salt' - I have six subtexts, comments on what I really mean when I'm saying that. Maybe that's what gives the impression that I'm saying one thing and thinking something else. ~ Christopher Walken
Pass The Salt quotes by Christopher Walken
Southern Californians freak out when it rains, yet when there's an earthquake they're like 'pass the salt. ~ Gregor Collins
Pass The Salt quotes by Gregor Collins
I would like you all to stop for a moment and really think about not having a voice or any means to communicate," my computer voice says. "You could never say, 'Pass the salt' or tell someone the really important things like 'I love you.' You can't tell someone that you're uncomfortable, cold, or in pain. ~ Martin Pistorius
Pass The Salt quotes by Martin Pistorius
I had lunch with a chess champion the other day. I knew he was a chess champion because it took him 20 minutes to pass the salt. ~ Eric Sykes
Pass The Salt quotes by Eric Sykes
I love Twitter, but some people use profanity so much that at some point it's like saying, 'Pass the salt.' ~ Bill Cosby
Pass The Salt quotes by Bill Cosby
On the second to last day, Lt. Russo, who ran the program, announced, "Unless you were at dinner last night and had the opportunity to say 'Howard, pass the salt,' you are going to Brooklyn North and Manhattan North. That's where they need people, and that's where you're going." "Howard" referred to to the Commissioner Safir, and when they read the list of assignments the next afternoon
"Alvarez ... Brooklyn North ... "
"Baker ... Brooklyn North ... "
"Buono ... Manhattan North ... "
"Calderon ... Brooklyn North ... "
"Conlon ... South Bronx Initiative ... "
more than a few people turned around to look. Howard, pass the salt. I was a little surprised myself. ~ Edward Conlon
Pass The Salt quotes by Edward Conlon
I don't know why people would want to have lunch with writers. I've eaten with writers. We have appalling table manners, and rarely say anything other than 'Pass the salt' or 'If you're not going to eat that, can I have it?' ~ Neil Gaiman
Pass The Salt quotes by Neil Gaiman
I have this theory about words. There's a thousand ways to say 'Pass the salt'. It could mean, you know, 'Can I have some salt?' or it could mean, 'I love you.' It could mean, 'I'm very annoyed with you'. Really, the list could go on and on. Words are little bombs, and they have a lot of energy inside them. ~ Christopher Walken
Pass The Salt quotes by Christopher Walken
I had dinner with my father last night, and made a classic Freudian slip. I meant to say, "Please pass the salt," but it came out, "You prick, you ruined my childhood. ~ Jonathan Ned Katz
Pass The Salt quotes by Jonathan Ned Katz
I went to a restaurant with my friend, and he said, "Pass the salt." I said, "Screw you! Sit closer to the salt." ~ Mitch Hedberg
Pass The Salt quotes by Mitch Hedberg
It sure is a pleasure not having Flume around in the mess hall any more. No more of that 'Pass the salt, Walt.'"
"Or 'Pass the bread, Fred.'"
"Or 'Shoot me a beet, Pete. ~ Joseph Heller
Pass The Salt quotes by Joseph Heller
morning, a merchant loaded his donkey with bags of salt to go to the market in order to sell them. The merchant and his donkey were walking along together. They had not walked far when they reached a river on the road. Unfortunately, the donkey slipped and fell into the river and noticed that the bags of salt loaded on his back became lighter. ~ Tanveer Ahmed
Pass The Salt quotes by Tanveer Ahmed
Floyd sometimes wondered if the Newspad, and the fantastic technology behind it, was the last word in man's quest for perfect communications. Here he was, far out in space, speeding away from Earth at thousands of miles an hour, yet in a few milliseconds he could see the headlines of any newspaper he pleased. (That very word "newspaper," of course, was an anachronistic hangover into the age of electronics.) The text was updated automatically on every hour; even if one read only the English versions, one could spend an entire lifetime doing nothing but absorbing the everchanging flow of information from the news satellites. It was hard to imagine how the system could be improved or made more convenient. But sooner or later, Floyd guessed, it would pass away, to be replaced by something as unimaginable as the Newspad itself would have been to Caxton or Gutenberg. ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Pass The Salt quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
If you pour a handful of salt into a cup of water, the water becomes undrinkable. But if you pour the salt into a river, people can continue to draw the water to cook, wash, and drink. The river is immense, and it has the capacity to receive, embrace, and transform. When our hearts are small, our understanding and compassion are limited, and we suffer. We can't accept or tolerate others and their shortcomings, and we demand that they change. But when our hearts expand, these same things don't make us suffer anymore. We have a lot of understanding and compassion and can embrace others. We accept others as they are, and then they have a chance to transform. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Pass The Salt quotes by Thich Nhat Hanh
The emphasis on winning is preventing kids from learning how to pass, which is the skill they ultimately need at the highest levels. The proposed solution is for top youth players to play fewer games. ~ Po Bronson
Pass The Salt quotes by Po Bronson
And then it was, that grief and pain made themselves known to me as never before. Note this, because I knew the full absurdity of Fate and Fortune and Nature more truly than a human can bear to know it. And perhaps the description of this, brief as it is, may give consolation to another. The worst takes its time to come, and then to pass. The truth is, you cannot prepare anyone for this, nor convey an understanding of it through language. It must be known. And this I would wish on no one in the world. ~ Anne Rice
Pass The Salt quotes by Anne Rice
When something goes wrong, the natural tendency is to say, "By God, we need to pass a law and do something." ~ Milton Friedman
Pass The Salt quotes by Milton Friedman
Any process that fails the Common Sense Test, cannot pass a Biblical Test. Those who have more should share with those who have none or less; not the other way round. Prosperity Gospel is antichrist. ~ Felix Wantang
Pass The Salt quotes by Felix Wantang
That fine part of our construction, the eye, seems as much the receptacle and seat of our passions as the mind itself; and at least it is the outward portal to introduce them to the house within, or rather the common thoroughfare to let our affections pass in and out. ~ Joseph Addison
Pass The Salt quotes by Joseph Addison
I never pass a Dairy Queen without stopping. I cannot stand tucked-in sheets. I was once a contestant on 'The Price is Right.' ~ Brian Shactman
Pass The Salt quotes by Brian Shactman
There are seasons in every country when noise and impudence pass current for worth; and in popular commotions especially, the clamors of interested and factious men are often mistaken for patriotism. ~ Alexander Hamilton
Pass The Salt quotes by Alexander Hamilton
Winter will pass, the days will lengthen, the ice will melt in the pasture pond. The song sparrow will return and sing, the frogs will awake, the warm wind will blow again. All these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur - this lovely world, these precious days ... ~ E.B. White
Pass The Salt quotes by E.B. White
Mama forbade me to attend the Exhibition after an over-heating spell, yet she insisted I gallivant in the park in the midafternoon sun. I almost wanted to pass out again just to spite her. ~ Susan Dennard
Pass The Salt quotes by Susan Dennard
If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments. ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Pass The Salt quotes by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Ryan, if you abandon me here, I will have no choice but to tell your father," Navinka cut in. "You don't want Aronzo and his men prowling after you again." She gave a stretch. "I can inform Lord Glenford we are joining my father in Dragonvale. The East Pass is a safe route. He will not insist on sending a further escort." She flashed a deadly smile. "I can make your life easier or more difficult. I leave the choice to you. ~ Sam Dogra
Pass The Salt quotes by Sam Dogra
It was the seventh or eighth floor, she couldn't remember which. A streetcar crawled past the front of the hotel, and people on the sidewalk moved in every direction, with legs on either side of them, and it crossed her mind to jump. ~ Patricia Highsmith
Pass The Salt quotes by Patricia Highsmith
Young Bindo Altovini, looking out from time, made a perfect coalition with the mountains, the sky, and the tall redheaded woman who had bent over just slightly to examine a raging battle that was long over. Alessandro imagined that Bindo Altovini was saying, half with longing, half with delight, "These are the things in which I was so helplessly caught up, the waves that took me, what I loved. When light filled my eyes and I was restless and could move, I knew not what all the color was about, but only that I had a passion to see. And now that I am still, I pass on to you my liveliness and my life, for you will be taken, as once I was, and although you must fight beyond your capacity to fight and feel beyond your capacity to feel, remember that it ends in perfect peace, and you will be as still and content as am I, for whom centuries are not even seconds."

In the eyes of Bindo Altoviti, Alessandro saw wisdom and amusement, and he knew why the subjects of paintings and photographs seemed to look from the past as if with clairvoyance. Even brutal and impatient men, when frozen in time, assumed expressions of extraordinary compassion, as if they had reflected the essence of their redemption back into the photograph. In a sense they were still living. ~ Mark Helprin
Pass The Salt quotes by Mark Helprin
Christianity has become so respectable and so conventional that it is now insipid. The salt has lost its flavor. ~ Billy Graham
Pass The Salt quotes by Billy Graham
You find a way, somehow to get through the most horrible things, things you think would kill you. You find a way and you move through the days, one by one, in shock, in despair, but you move. The days pass, one after the other, and you go along with them - occasionally stunned, and not entirely relieved, to find that you are still alive. ~ Michelle Richmond
Pass The Salt quotes by Michelle Richmond
There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires. ~ Nelson Mandela
Pass The Salt quotes by Nelson Mandela
Matt said, "I need to go. I have other appointments today." Without a single ounce of hesitation, he cupped Priss's shoulders, drew her forward, and gave her a smacking kiss right on her slightly parted lips.
It was a toss-up who was more surprised, Priss or Trace. Priss blinked rapidly, Trace snarled and Chris laughed at them both.
"I enjoyed working with you, Priss. You were more than entertaining, and a font of information on all things kinky."
Trace narrowed his eyes. Was Matt trying to rile him? All things kinky? Just what the hell had they discussed? "What does that mean, Matt?"
"She schooled us on the porn marketplace. Very informative." After a meaningful glance at Trace, he turned back to Priss. "I hope to see you again."
She went still, unsure what to say. Trace filled in the silence. "Did you want to bill me, or get paid now?"
"I almost hate to charge, it was all so fascinating."
Trace growled. "But you will."
Grinning, Matt said, "Yes." As he turned away, he added, "I'll get something in the mail to Dare. He can pass it along to you. I certainly trust you."
Matt's emphasis meant that Priss didn't trust him - not that Trace needed a reminder of that. ~ Lori Foster
Pass The Salt quotes by Lori Foster
Dream delivers us to dream, and there is no end to illusion. Life is like a train of moods like a string of beads, and, as we pass through them, they prove to be many-colored lenses which paint the world their own hue ... ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Pass The Salt quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Not long ago, I advertised for perverse rules of grammar, along the lines of "Remember to never split an infinitive" and "The passive voice should never be used." The notion of making a mistake while laying down rules ("Thimk," "We Never Make Misteaks") is highly unoriginal, and it turns out that English teachers have been circulating lists of fumblerules for years. As owner of the world's largest collection, and with thanks to scores of readers, let me pass along a bunch of these never-say-neverisms:

* Avoid run-on sentences they are hard to read.
* Don't use no double negatives.
* Use the semicolon properly, always use it where it is appropriate; and never where it isn't.
* Reserve the apostrophe for it's proper use and omit it when its not needed.
* Do not put statements in the negative form.
* Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
* No sentence fragments.
* Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
* Avoid commas, that are not necessary.
* If you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing.
* A writer must not shift your point of view.
* Eschew dialect, irregardless.
* And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
* Don't overuse exclamation marks!!!
* Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences, as of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.
* Writers should always hyphenate between ~ William Safire
Pass The Salt quotes by William Safire
If you love somebody deeply and you lose that relationship - whether through death, rejection or separation - you will feel pain. That pain is called grief. Grief is a normal emotional reaction to any significant loss, whether a loved one, a job or a limb. There's no way to avoid or get rid of it - it's just there. And, once accepted, it will pass in its own time.
Unfortunately, many of us refuse to accept grief. We will do anything rather than feel it. We may bury ourselves in work, drink heavily, throw ourselves into a new relationship 'on the rebound' or numb ourselves with prescribed medications. But no matter how hard we try to push grief away, deep down inside it's still there. And eventually it will be back.
It's like holding a football underwater. As long as you keep holding it down, it stays beneath the surface. But eventually your arm gets tired and the moment you release your grip, the ball leaps straight up out of the water. ~ Russ Harris
Pass The Salt quotes by Russ Harris
I know the hard ground and the taste of the salt water I'm made of and the way even getting out of bed feels impossible some days. I know how some moments there's not even enough air.

I know the desperate and the bargains you want to make with the universe and every last prayer you've prayed to gods you don't even believe in.

But stupid? No, love.

Not stupid. Not you. You are infinitely, impossibly, beautifully human. ~ Jeanette LeBlanc
Pass The Salt quotes by Jeanette LeBlanc
What an absurd thing it is to pass over all the valuable parts of a man, and fix our attention on his infirmities. ~ Joseph Addison
Pass The Salt quotes by Joseph Addison
I was convinced I would never even get through the first year at school, but I succeeded, I was even awarded a prize; but I would certainly never pass the grammar-school entrance exam, yet again I succeeded; but then I would certainly fail my year at school, but no, I did not fail, in fact I kept on succeeding. But this did not give me confidence, on the contrary, I became convinced - and your disapproving face was formal proof of this - that the more I succeeded, the worse my eventual downfall would be. ~ Franz Kafka
Pass The Salt quotes by Franz Kafka
Now behind the eyes and secrets of the dreamers in the streets rocked to sleep by the sea, see the titbits and topsyturvies, bobs and buttontops, bags and bones, ash and rind and dandruff and nailparings, saliva and snowflakes and moulted feathers of dreams, the wrecks and sprats and shells and fishbones, whale-juice and moonshine and small salt fry dished up by the hidden sea. ~ Dylan Thomas
Pass The Salt quotes by Dylan Thomas
If zero percent of the elites support something, very low chance it's going to pass, if 100% support something, very high chance it's going to pass. Same thing for organized interest groups. But for the average voter, it's a flat line. Which says it doesn't matter whether zero percent of the public believes something or 100% of the average voters believe something - it doesn't affect the probability that that thing will be enacted. ~ Lawrence Lessig
Pass The Salt quotes by Lawrence Lessig
When he smiles at me, I feel like I'm sitting under a heat lamp. I live for the times when his fingers brush my leg at lunch, or when we pass in the hallways and he raises his eyebrows at me, like we have a secret. I should feel bad
and I do, most of the time
but how can I stop thinking about him when seeing his face makes me feel so alive? ~ Melissa C. Walker
Pass The Salt quotes by Melissa C. Walker
She tasted of ambrosia. Like peaches and blossoms and honey and musk. And just a touch of salt, to make the unbearable sweetness even sweeter still. ~ Tessa Dare
Pass The Salt quotes by Tessa Dare
How sad if we pass through life and never see it with the eyes of a child. ~ Anthony De Mello
Pass The Salt quotes by Anthony De Mello
We had a rough month. If no one was around trying to kill us we might as well spend the rest of our lives driving each other insane. It would pass the time. ~ Suenammi Richards
