Years ago, a Muslim woman called my radio show and asked me why I was not a Muslim. She asked this question with complete sincerity, and I answered her with equal sincerity.
The name of her religion, I told her, is Islam, which in Arabic means submission (to God). The name of the Jewish people is Israel, which in Hebrew means struggle with God. I'd rather struggle with God, I said, than only submit to God.
She thanked me and hung up. The answer apparently satisfied her.
Arguing/struggling with God is not only Jewishly permitted, it is central to the Torah and later Judaism. In this regard, as in others, the Torah is unique. In no other foundational religious text of which I am aware is arguing with God a religious expectation. The very first Jew, Abraham, argues with God, as does the greatest Jew, Moses. (It is worth noting that though Muslims consider Abraham their father as well, arguing with God has no place in the Quran or in normative Islam.)
It is difficult to overstate the importance of this Jewish concept. For one thing, it enabled Jews to believe in the importance of reason - God Himself could be challenged on the basis of reason and morality; one does not have to suspend reason to be a believing Jew. Indeed, it assured Jews that belief in God was itself the apotheosis of reason. For another, it had profound psychological benefits to Jews. We do not have to squelch our questioning of, or even our anger at, God. One can be both religious and real ~ Dennis Prager
Muslim Woman quotes by Dennis Prager
A woman of European heritage sporting a preacher's collar had the opposite effect of a Muslim woman wearing a hijab. She used her privilege and the favored religion to look like a golden child. ~ Eric Jerome Dickey
Muslim Woman quotes by Eric Jerome Dickey
How could God be so cruel as to create a Muslim woman with so much flesh and so little sex appeal? ~ Azar Nafisi
Muslim Woman quotes by Azar Nafisi
Life is beautiful mess...and I am tangled...though I am the spider but a stupid one. Cheap I am by name, views and actions. ~ Anum Aforz
Muslim Woman quotes by Anum Aforz
Those who treat the muslim woman not as an individual but as a symbol either of Islamic chastity or secular liberalism are guilty of the same sin : the objectification of women ~ Reza Aslan
Muslim Woman quotes by Reza Aslan
I, as a Muslim woman living in 1993, I want to have two things - the mosque and the satellite, both at the same time. And no one can mutilate me by telling me I cannot have the mosque or the Koran. ~ Fatema Mernissi
Muslim Woman quotes by Fatema Mernissi
A Muslim woman must not feel wild, or free, or any of the other emotions and longings I felt when I read those books. A Muslim girl does not make her own decisions or seek control. She is trained to be docile. If you are a Muslim girl, you disappear, until there is almost no you inside you. In Islam, becoming an individual is not a necessary development; many people, especially women, never develop a clear individual will. You submit: that is the literal meaning of the word islam: submission. The goal is to become quiet inside, so that you never raise your eyes, not even inside your mind. But ~ Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Muslim Woman quotes by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
When you write about a Muslim woman, like I did with my previous novels - 'Minaret', for example, which is about a woman who starts to wear the hijab - it sets all the alarm bells ringing. ~ Leila Aboulela
Muslim Woman quotes by Leila Aboulela
With my veil I put my faith on display - rather than my beauty. My value as a human is defined by my relationship with God, not by my looks. I cover the irrelevant. And when you look at me, you don't see a body. You view me only for what I am: a servant of my Creator.
You see, as a Muslim woman, I've been liberated from a silent kind of bondage. I don't answer to the slaves of God on earth. I answer to their King. ~ Yasmin Mogahed
Muslim Woman quotes by Yasmin Mogahed
Let's not ask Barbara Walters about how Muslim women feel. Let's not ask Tom Brokaw how Muslim women feel. Let's not ask CNN, ABC, FOX, The London Times, or the Australia Times. Let's not ask non-Muslims how Muslim women feel, how they live, what are their principles, and what are their challenges. If you want to be fair, ask a Muslim woman. Ask my wife. Ask my mother. Ask a Muslim woman who knows her religion, who has a relationship with her Creator, who is stable in her society, understands her responsibilities. Ask her. ~ Khalid Yasin
Muslim Woman quotes by Khalid Yasin
Muslim women, and critics, male and female, of Western models of sex and sexuality, are silenced. The price of speech for a Muslim woman in the West is the disavowal of Islam. Books condemning Islam are picked by publishers and featured on talk shows. Their authors are commended for their courage. Speech in defense of Islam is read as the speech of subjection. Islam oppresses women. Any woman speaking in its favor must be deluded or forced to speak against her will. If she defends the hijab or speaks in defense of polygamy, she cannot be believed. No woman in her right mind could defend these. Any woman who does must be deluded or coerced. The more Muslim women object to Western efforts to "help" them, the more need there is to liberate them. ~ Anne Norton
Muslim Woman quotes by Anne Norton
I was born in 1965. When I grew up in India, there was no expectation that a good Muslim woman wore the headscarf. But what happened when I came here to the U.S. and the emergence of the Saudi and Iranian theologies in the world is that the headscarf became the hijab and the hijab is now the idea that is synonymous with headscarf. ~ Asra Nomani
Muslim Woman quotes by Asra Nomani
Betty's a good Muslim woman and wife. I don't imagine many other women might put up with the way I am. Awakening this brainwashed black man and telling this arrogant, devilish white man the truth about himself, Betty understands, is a full-time job ~ Malcolm X
Muslim Woman quotes by Malcolm X
Women joked amongst themselves: 'Why do you think a bride cries on her wedding day? It's for the love that this marriage is putting an end to for all eternity. Men may think a woman has no past- "you were born and then I married you"- but men are fools. ~ Nadeem Aslam
Muslim Woman quotes by Nadeem Aslam
To be a veiled Muslim woman on screen is a very scary minefield for me. ~ Yasmine Al Masri
Muslim Woman quotes by Yasmine Al Masri
The world's oldest university, University of Karaouin, was established by a Muslim woman in Fez, Morocco in 859 ~ Firas Alkhateeb
Muslim Woman quotes by Firas Alkhateeb
I am totally against the idea that a Muslim woman should not have the same opportunities as a Muslim man to learn, to open up, to work, help shape the future. To close Islam down to a sexist approach is totally intolerable and ridiculous. It's not Islam. ~ King Hussein I
Muslim Woman quotes by King Hussein I
At the root of many a woman's failure to become a great cook lies her failure to develop a workmanlike regard for knives. ~ Robert Farrar Capon
Muslim Woman quotes by Robert Farrar Capon
Stormy Llewellyn, a woman of unconventional views, believes instead that our passage through this world is intended to toughen us for the next life. She says that our honesty, integrity, courage, and determined resistance to evil are evaluated at the end of our days here, and that if we come up to muster, we will be conscripted into an army of souls engaged in some great mission in the next world. Those who fail the test simply cease to exist. ~ Dean Koontz
Muslim Woman quotes by Dean Koontz
Radical Muslims fly planes into buildings. Radical Christians kill abortion doctors. Radical Atheists write books. ~ Hemant Mehta
Muslim Woman quotes by Hemant Mehta
A strong woman is like an eagle, against the strong winds she soars. ~ Gift Gugu Mona
Muslim Woman quotes by Gift Gugu Mona
When I was just a cute little caterpillar, you loved me. So I became a butterfly so you would never leave. ~ Crystal Woods
Muslim Woman quotes by Crystal Woods
You may go over the world and you will find that every form of religion which has breathed upon this earth has degraded woman... I have been traveling over the old world during the last few years and have found new food for thought. What power is it that makes the Hindoo woman burn herself upon the funeral pyre of her husband? Her religion. What holds the Turkish woman in the harem? Her religion. By what power do the Mormons perpetuate their system of polygamy? By their religion/ Man, of himself, could not do this; but when he declares, 'Thus saith the Lord,' of course he can do it. So long as ministers stand up and tell us Christ is the head of the church, so is man the head of woman, how are we to break the chains which have held women down through the ages? You Christian women look at the Hindoo, the Turkish, the Mormon women, and wonder how they can be held in such bondage...

Now I ask you if our religion teaches the dignity of woman? It teaches us the abominable idea of the sixth century--Augustine's idea--that motherhood is a curse; that woman is the author of sin, and is most corrupt. Can we ever cultivate any proper sense of self-respect as long as women take such sentiments from the mouths of the priesthood? ~ Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Muslim Woman quotes by Elizabeth Cady Stanton
But the thought arrived inside her like a train: Marya Morevna, all in black, here and now, was a point at which all the women she had been met - the Yaichkan and the Leningrader and the chyerti maiden; the girl who saw the birds, and the girl who never did - the woman she was and the woman she might have been and the woman she would always be, forever intersecting and colliding, a thousand birds falling from a thousand oaks, over and over. ~ Catherynne M Valente
Muslim Woman quotes by Catherynne M Valente
I cannot have this Imelda Marcos woman beating me, whoever she is,' Suki shrugged by way of explanation. ~ Sarah Alderson
Muslim Woman quotes by Sarah Alderson
When yet another woman old enough to be his grandmother headed Reyes off and demanded his attention before he could get to me, I giggled at the forced smile on his face. She flirted, batted her lashes, and patted his biceps about twelve times too many for his comfort. He took out his phone and typed as the woman spoke to him, her movements exaggerated. I couldn't be certain but I had a feeling she was talking to him about how she used to be a pole dancer until her hip gave out.

My phone chimed. I took it out of the delicate clutch that matched my dress and read Reyes's text.

Aren't you going to save me?

I don't know. I'm having a lot of fun right now. Wanna sext?

He crossed an arm over his chest while holding his phone. One corner of his mouth twitched as he leaned back against the tree and typed.

Absolutely.

Sweet. What are you wearing?

His eyes sparkled with mirth.

Animal print boxers and striped socks

I burst out laughing, gaining the attention of everyone around me. ~ Darynda Jones
Muslim Woman quotes by Darynda Jones
Don't date a woman without cable (no cable, no SportsCenter). ~ Vantile Whitfield
Muslim Woman quotes by Vantile Whitfield
No woman ever yet either reasoned or acted long together consequentially; but some little thing, some love, some resentment, somepresent momentary interest, some supposed slight, or some humour, always breaks in upon, and oversets their most prudent resolutions and schemes. ~ Lord Chesterfield
Muslim Woman quotes by Lord Chesterfield
Have you ever noticed, Oscar, that when people say, 'You're a smart woman', what they really mean to say is 'But I am smarter'? ~ Ilona Andrews
Muslim Woman quotes by Ilona Andrews
Ransie was a narrow six feet of sallow brown skin and yellow hair. The imperturbability of the mountains hung upon him like a suit of armor. The woman was calicoed, angled, snuff-brushed, and weary with unknown desires. Through it all gleamed a faint protest of cheated youth unconscious of its loss. ~ O. Henry
Muslim Woman quotes by O. Henry
All the nightmares that had ever plagued a woman alone in the dark loomed in her mind. ~ Nora Roberts
Muslim Woman quotes by Nora Roberts
My purpose is to develop a country, to empower its population. It's from that same population that will emerge the man or woman who will succeed me. And they will be chosen based on the consensus that they have the capacity to lead the country. ~ Paul Kagame
Muslim Woman quotes by Paul Kagame
Thanks to every generation of women from every culture on earth who ever lived, thanks to every woman who ever voiced a seditious thought or pursued her talents regardless of invisibility, my generation of women have been able to live a life different from that of every woman who came before us. ~ Jane Caro
Muslim Woman quotes by Jane Caro
How a little love and good company improves a woman. ~ George Farquhar
Muslim Woman quotes by George Farquhar
You're one hell of a woman, Molly," I said. "Thank you. ~ Jim Butcher
Muslim Woman quotes by Jim Butcher
The misnamed "feminine" woman, so admired by her creator, man the woman who is acquiescent in her inferiority and who has swallowed man's image of her as his ordained helpmate and no more is in reality the "masculine" woman. The truly feminine woman "cannot help burning with that inner rage that comes from having to identify with her exploiter's negative image of her," and having to conform to her persecutor's idea of femininity and its man-decreed limitations. ~ Elizabeth Gould Davis
Muslim Woman quotes by Elizabeth Gould Davis
The different religions confused me. Which was the right one? I tried to figure it out but had no success. It worried me. The different Gods - Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Mohammedan - seemed very particular in the way in which they expected me to keep on good terms with them. I couldn't please one without offending the others. One kind soul solved my problem by taking me on my first trip to the planetarium. I contemplated the insignificant flyspeck called Earth, the millions of suns and solar systems, and concluded that whoever was in charge of all this would not throw a fit if I ate ham, or meat on Friday, or did not fast in the daytime during Ramadan. I felt much better after this and was, for a while, keenly interested in astronomy. ~ Richard Erdoes
Muslim Woman quotes by Richard Erdoes
For a journalist who covers the Muslim world, we have responsibilities to be familiar with that culture and to know how to respond to that. ~ Lynsey Addario
Muslim Woman quotes by Lynsey Addario
My friend, still seemingly perplexed, asked me "So if it's not about genitals, what is it about trans women's bodies that you find so attractive?"
I paused for a second to consider the question. Then I replied that it is almost always their eyes.
When I look into them, I see both endless strength and inconsolable sadness.
I see someone who has overcome humiliation and abuses that would flatten the average person.
I see a woman who was made to feel shame for her desires and yet had the courage to pursue them anyway.
I see a woman who was forced against her will into boyhood, who held on to a dream that everybody in her life desperately tried to beat out of her, who refused to listen to the endless stream of people who told her that who she was and what she wanted was impossible.
When I look into a trans woman's eyes, I see a profound appreciation for how fucking empowering it can be to be female, an appreciation that seems lost on many cissexual women who sadly take their female identities and anatomies for granted, or who perpetually seek to cast themselves as victims rather than instigators.
In trans women's eyes, I see a wisdom that can only come from having to fight for your right to be recognised as female, a raw strength that only comes from unabashedly asserting your right to be feminine in an inhospitable world.
In a trans woman's eyes, I see someone who understands that, in a culture that's seemingly fuelled on male homophobic h ~ Julia Serano
Muslim Woman quotes by Julia Serano
Deciding that at the moment it behooved her to, as Wiry had put it, behave, Heather inclined her head, first to the woman alongside her, "Martha," then to the barrel-chested man, shorter than Wiry but of heavier build, who'd remained quietly seated in the far corner of the coach. "Cobbins."
She turned her gaze on Wiry. "And you are?"
He smiled. "You may call me Fletcher, Miss Wallace."
Heather thought of a few other epithets she might call him, but she merely inclined her head. Settling on the seat, she leaned her head back against the squabs and ventured nothing more. She sensed that Fletcher expected her to protest, perhaps beg for mercy, or try to subvert him and the others from their goal, but she saw no point in lowering herself to that.
No point at all.
The more she thought of all Fletcher had let fall, the more she felt certain of that. This had to be the strangest abduction she'd ever heard of...well, she hadn't heard the details of any abduction attempts, but it seemed distinctly odd that they were treating her so considerately, so...sensibly. So terribly calmly and confidently. ~ Stephanie Laurens
Muslim Woman quotes by Stephanie Laurens
Peter Pan," I whisper into her ear.

"I'm afraid."

"Afraid of what?" I kiss the opposite corner. She's not as stiff as she was a minute ago. I kiss her mouth full on and close my eyes at the feel of
her lips. God, I am so whipped by this woman.

"Of how vulnerable you make me. ~ Tarryn Fisher
Muslim Woman quotes by Tarryn Fisher
It's kind of true, you do disappear off the planet if you are a middle-aged woman, but that has some advantages as well. ~ Diane Keaton
Muslim Woman quotes by Diane Keaton
And finally
the glass that contains and spills this stuff continually
while the drinker hunches before it, while the bartender gathers
up empties, gives back the drinker's own face. Who knows what it looks like;
who cares whether or not it was young once, or ever lovely,
who gives a shit about some drunk rising to stagger toward
the bathroom, some man or woman or even lost
angel who recklessly threw it all over - heaven, the ether,
the celestial works - and said, Fuck it, I want to be human? ~ Kim Addonizio
Muslim Woman quotes by Kim Addonizio
Deleuze's findings are confirmed by those of an experienced woman psychiatrist who for many years has made a study of automatic writing. In conversation this lady has informed me that, sooner or later, most automatists produce scripts in which certain metaphysical ideas are set forth. The theme of these scripts is always the same: namely, the the ground of the individual soul is identical with the divine Ground of all being. Returning to their normal state, the automatists read what they have written and often find it in complete disharmony with what they have always believed. ~ Aldous Huxley
Muslim Woman quotes by Aldous Huxley
You know, Breccan, we were all born into this realm for a purpose. We were born to live in that forest," Gunnar said, pointing ahead. He swallowed deeply as he continued to take in the sight of Surchin. Breccan came up behind Gunnar. "And you know, we are all gonna die there. How convenient. Yep, we are all gonna find finality before we've taken a woman. So not the way I wanted things to go. ~ Madison Thorne Grey
Muslim Woman quotes by Madison Thorne Grey
ROSE: I married your daddy and settled down to cooking his super and keeping clean sheets on the bed. When your daddy walked through the house he was so big he filled it up. That was my first mistake. Not to make him leave some room for me. For my part in the matter. But at that time I wanted that. I wanted a house that I could sing in. And that's what your daddy gave me. I didn't know to keep up his strength I had to give up little pieces of mine. I did that. I took on his life as mine and mixed up the pieces so that you couldn't hardly tell which was which anymore. It was my choice. It was my life and I didn't have to live it like that. But that's what life offered me in the way of being a woman and I took it. I grabbed hold of it with both hands. ~ August Wilson
Muslim Woman quotes by August Wilson
Labor will hurt. Probably a lot. But whether this is negative is another matter ... A laboring woman can be in a great deal of pain, yet feel loved and supported and exhilarated by the creative forces flowing through her body and her ability to meet labor's challenges. ~ Henci Goer
Muslim Woman quotes by Henci Goer
She felt as if she had somehow failed him and herself by allowing his mother's behavior to upset her. She should be above it; she should shrug it off as the ranting of a village woman; she should not keep thinking of all the retorts she could have made instead of just standing mutely in that kitchen. But she was upset, and made even more so by Odenigbo's expression, as if he could not believe she was not quite as high-minded as he had thought. ~ Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Muslim Woman quotes by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
A woman would know all right about her own husband. ~ Agatha Christie
Muslim Woman quotes by Agatha Christie
Every woman, hell, every man should be a feminist, that is the only way to render this word obsolete. ~ Aysha Taryam
Muslim Woman quotes by Aysha Taryam
She was the type of woman who caused men to do stupid shit they would later look back on with disbelief. ~ Scott Hildreth
Muslim Woman quotes by Scott Hildreth
I don't believe that you have to dress in a masculine way to seem powerful. I think that the way a woman dresses doesn't have to be so aggressive. Being feminine is a powerful feature in itself. Power is in a person's demeanor. ~ Jason Wu
Muslim Woman quotes by Jason Wu
It was love, she thought, love that never clutch its object; but, like the love which mathematicians bear their symbols, or poets their phrases, was meant to be spread over the world and become part of human gain. The world by all means should have shared it, could Mr Bankes have said why that woman pleased him so; why the sight of her reading a fairy tale to her boy had upon him precisely the same effect as the solution of a scientific problem. ~ Virginia Woolf
Muslim Woman quotes by Virginia Woolf
This is most definitely not a game anymore. This woman ..., she owns me. ~ Stylo Fantome
Muslim Woman quotes by Stylo Fantome
Even Sally wound't want to cross fans with the Dowager Duchess of Dovedale. The woman had a tongue of steel and drank the blood of young virgins for breakfast. ~ Lauren Willig
Muslim Woman quotes by Lauren Willig
She was intelligent, accomplished, beautiful. She was everything I could have asked for in a woman. But she was a king maker. She wanted power. She must have thought her only path to the throne was through Kastor.'
'My honourable barbarian. I wouldn't have picked that as your type.'
'Type?'
'A pretty face, a devious mind and a ruthless nature. ~ C.S. Pacat
Muslim Woman quotes by C.S. Pacat
They told her the attack was her fault. She was Iraqi, wasn't she, they had accused. They knew she was Muslim. Her fault, they had kept on, the dirty little terrorist, the conspiring towel head. Lulu had stood for the first time, at a loss for words. Worse than hearing the words from hateful strangers-she had heard the poisonous words from boys she'd grown up with, boys she'd kissed, boys she'd had crushes on, boys she'd tasted her first alcohol with, boys she'd wrestled with for control of the tv remote.

Strangers, at least, she could have ignored.

She should have felt punched in the stomach. But she hadn't. She should have screamed and yelled back at them. But she hadn't. Instead, she had stood there, dazed and stupid, while wondering if all those years she'd thought she belonged there she had been terribly, horribly mistaken. The relatives who died fighting tyranny had choked the words in her throat. Her heart had shattered that day, into thousands of selfish pieces. The one she had now, the one she had to put back together, had slivers missing in the strangest of places. ~ Aminah Mae Safi
Muslim Woman quotes by Aminah Mae Safi
Could he be interested in her? How did people know? Perhaps if she had grown up like a normal woman, she would know when a man was interested in her. Instead, she grew up in a monastery where there were no such feelings, at least not openly expressed. ~ Morgan L. Busse
Muslim Woman quotes by Morgan L. Busse
What a woman. He couldn't remember the last time he'd found himself so intrigued. But he wouldn't get to enjoy the witch for long if she had her way. Remy revised his plan to find some mortal pussy before heading back to hell. For some reason, it suddenly became more important to make sure he stayed partnered with the witch. You are not getting rid of me that easy. Perhaps he'd inherited his mother's crazy gene after all. She would be so proud. ~ Eve Langlais
Muslim Woman quotes by Eve Langlais
There is no blacklist. In the first place, in the entertainment business, money talks, bullshit walks. So Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins won't be blacklisted because they are bankable stars. In the second place, if you are a woman, the only things you're going to be blacklisted for in Hollywood are body fat and aging. ~ Janeane Garofalo
Muslim Woman quotes by Janeane Garofalo
Is this what growing into an adult woman is - having to predict and accordingly arrange for the avoidance of sexual harassment? ~ Candice Carty-Williams
Muslim Woman quotes by Candice Carty-Williams
You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment. ~ Dave Barry
