Better a live bird in the jungle of the body than two stuffed birds on the library table. ~ Nathanael West
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Nathanael West
Art Is One if Life's Richest Offerings. For those who have not the talent to create, there is appreciation. ~ Nathanael West
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Nathanael West
As far as he could discover, there were no signs of spring. The decay that covered the surface of the mottled ground was not the kind in which life generates. Last year, he remembered, May had failed to quicken these soiled fields. It had taken all the brutality of July to torture a few green spikes through the exhausted dirt.
What the little park needed, even more than he did, was a drink. Neither alcohol nor rain would do. Tomorrow, in his column, he would ask Broken-hearted, Sick-of-it-all, Desperate, Disillusioned-with-tubercular-husband and the rest of his correspondents to come here and water the soil with their tears. Flowers would then spring up, flowers that smelled of feet.
"Ah, humanity ... " But he was heavy with shadow and the joke went into a dying fall. He trist to break its fall by laughing at himself. ~ Nathanael West
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Nathanael West
Every child, everywhere; in the whole world there was not one child who was not gravely, sweetly dancing. ~ Nathanael West
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Nathanael West
The way to be gay is to make other people gay," Miss Lonelyhearts said. "Sleep with me and I'll be one gay dog. ~ Nathanael West
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Nathanael West
Bucky's expression wasn't hostile, but it was serious. "Someday I'm going to fight and you won't be at my back."
"Nonsense. I'm your friend. Who I work for doesn't change that."
"If you leave it too long, you won't have a choice anymore. If the Steam Council turns on the people, each of us is going to have to decide where we belong."
"And you're going to play the rebel? You won't even carry a gun," Tobias snapped. "Your father may own an arms factory, but you make toys for a living."
"I don't carry a gun because I'm too good a shot," Bucky said quietly. "But when I fire, I don't miss. I never want to find you in my sights."
"It's not that simple," Tobias shot back, feeling a need for justification.
Bucky shrugged. "No, but the barons are running out of time, and that means we won't have many more chances to talk before everything falls apart. ~ Emma Jane Holloway
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Emma Jane Holloway
- Why do you love him, Miss Cathy?
- Nonsense, I do - that's sufficient.
- By no means; you must say why?
- Well, because he is handsome, and pleasant to be with.
- Bad.
- And because he's young & cheerful.
- Bad, still.
- And because he loves me.
- Indifferent, coming there.
And he will be rich and I shall be the greatest woman of the neighbourhood, and I shall be proud of having such a husband.
- Worst of all. ~ Emily Bronte
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Emily Bronte
Perhaps charity is the kind of beauty that we comprehend the best because we miss it the most. ~ Gregory Maguire
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Gregory Maguire
I studied him a moment before slipping my arms around his waist. "I guess you look human enough," I said casually, and he raised an eyebrow. Arrogant faery. He knows exactly how gorgeous he is . "Come on,' I said, tugging him toward the carriage. "We should hurry or we'll miss our reservation. ~ Julie Kagawa
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Julie Kagawa
And had a face like a bulldog licking vinegar off a thistle ... ~ Terry Pratchett
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Terry Pratchett
How long will you be gone?" I asked just to make very clear how I didn't enjoy getting ditched.
"As long as it takes. When I get back, I'll kiss you until you can't stand."
"Stop with the threats. I'll miss you even if you're a jerk. ~ Bijou Hunter
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Bijou Hunter
Ours is an upbeat, a hurried, hasty beat. It keeps pressing us to go farther, to include everything so that we can savor everything, so that we can know everything, so that we will miss nothing. Partly it's greed, but mainly its curiosity. We just want to experience it. And we do. ~ Agnes De Mille
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Agnes De Mille
When your mind tries to verify a preconceived notion you can miss the obvious. ~ James Cook
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by James Cook
Yes ... I miss that everyone in Ireland tries to knock some humour out of every situation. I don't think I appreciated that. It's unique to Ireland. ~ Deirdre O'Kane
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Deirdre O'Kane
The gravel road widened into a large turnaround where three similar looking and designed brothels sat waiting for customers. They were called Sheila's Front Porch, Tawny's High Five Ranch and Miss Delilah's House of Holies.
"Nice," Rachel said as we surveyed the scene. "why are these places always named after women
as if women actually own them?"
"You got me. I guess Mister Dave's House of Holies wouldn't go over so well with the guys."
Rachel smiled.
"You're right. I guess it's a shrewd move. Name a place of female degradation and slavery after a female and it doesn't sound so bad, does it? It's packaging. ~ Michael Connelly
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Michael Connelly
The old lady told me that all the girls in the village of Annezin prayed every night for the War to end, and for the English to go away - as soon as their money was spent. And that the clause about the money was always repeated in case God should miss it. ~ Robert Graves
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Robert Graves
As long as religious people are well dressed, well fed, and well cared for, words about being in solidarity with the poor will remain pious words more likely to evoke good feelings than creative actions. As long as we are doing well what others are doing better and more efficiently, we can hardly expect to be considered the salt of the earth or the light of the world. In short, as long as we avoid displacement, we will miss the compassionate life to which our Lord calls us. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
I'm Looking forward to summer. If you miss it don't look back but try to bring sunny days into your life instead. ~ Ana Claudia Antunes
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Ana Claudia Antunes
Workaholism

Our culture celebrates the idea of the workaholic. We hear about people burning the midnight oil. They pull all- nighters and sleep at the office. It's considered a badge of honor to kill yourself over a project. No amount of work is too much work. Not only is this workaholism unnecessary, it's stupid. Working more doesn't mean you care more or get more done. It just means you work more.

Workaholics wind up creating more problems than they solve. First off, working like that just isn't sustainable over time. When the burnout crash comes - and it will - it'll hit that much harder. Workaholics miss the point, too. They try to fix problems by throwing sheer hours at them. They try to make up for intellectual laziness with brute force. This results in inelegant solutions. They even create crises. They don't look for ways to be more efficient because they actually like working overtime. They enjoy feeling like heroes. They create problems (often unwittingly) just so they can get off on working more.

Workaholics make the people who don't stay late feel inadequate for "merely" working reasonable hours. That leads to guilt and poor morale all around. Plus, it leads to an ass- in- seat mentality - people stay late out of obligation, even if they aren't really being productive. If all you do is work, you're unlikely to have sound judgments. Your values and decision making wind up skewed. You stop being able to decide what's worth extra eff ~ Jason Fried
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Jason Fried
Well, I was born in Louisiana, but I grew up in South Carolina, which both are definitely very different than LA, but I miss the thunderstorms. ~ Ashley Scott
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Ashley Scott
If I had been the same age. If I had gone to the same school. If I was in that room right now. There's no way to know if we would have lasted. There's no way to be sure, and plenty of reason to doubt it. I just wish I'd had the chance. That is one of the things I miss the most- the chance to make it work. ~ David Levithan
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by David Levithan
At times young man, you tread a precariously thin line between being charmingly headstrong and insufferably pigheaded. ( ... ) Miss Bloom, would you fetch my flask of coca-wine? It seems I won't be sleeping tonight and I shall have to indulge if I am to keep awake. ~ Ransom Riggs
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Ransom Riggs
Miss Manners' meager arsenal consists only of the withering look, the insistent and repeated request, the cold voice, the report up the chain of command and the tilted nose. They generally work. ~ Judith Martin
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Judith Martin
I miss you like the mismatching sock I can't find. You're out there somewhere. ~ Karen Quan
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Karen Quan
Because I can count on my fingers the number of sunsets I have left, and I don't want to miss any of them. ~ Suzanne Collins
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Suzanne Collins
Nicely, thank you, Mr. Laurence. But I am not Miss March, I'm only Jo," returned the young lady.
"I'm not Mr. Laurence, I'm only Laurie."
"Laurie Laurence, what an odd name."
"My first name is Theodore, but I don't like it, for the fellows called me Dora, so I made them say Laurie instead."
"I hate my name, too, so sentimental! I wish every one would say Jo instead of Josephine. How did you make the boys stop calling you Dora?"
"I thrashed 'em."
"I can't thrash Aunt March, so I suppose I shall have to bear it." And Jo resigned herself with a sigh ~ Louisa May Alcott
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Louisa May Alcott
All great things in life are hard to achieve, and if you shy away from hard work and challenges, you'll miss out. ~ Sai Pradeep
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Sai Pradeep
When I heard about these lessons, I thought they would be a dreadful waste of my time. I pictured two very silly girls uninterested in any sort of instruction. But that describes neither Miss Gray nor yourself. I should tell you, I used to train younger Shadowhunters in Madrid. And there were quite a few of them who didn't have the same native ability that you do. You're a talented student, and it is my pleasure to teach you."
Sophie felt herself flush scarlet. "You cannot be serious."
"I am. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I came here and again so the next time and the next. I found that I was looking forward to it. In fact, it would be fair to say that since my return home, I have hated everything in London except these hours with you. ~ Cassandra Clare
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Cassandra Clare
I'm going to miss you while you're gone. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Nicholas Sparks
At least to look back over their own lives, as I have looked back over mine, for certain themes and patterns and signals that are so easy to miss when you're caught up in the process of living them. If God speaks to us at all other than through such official channels as the Bible and the church, then I think he speaks to us largely through what happens to us, so listen to what has happened to you-for the sound, above all else, of his voice. ~ Frederick Buechner
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Frederick Buechner
There was a lull. Sammy was staring across the room at George Opdyke, the three-time Pulitzer Prize winner. I was about to say he was lost in thought, but Sammy was never really lost, and he never actually thought, for that implied deep reflection. He was figuring. Miss Goldblum edged her undernourished white hand into his. Sammy played with it absent-mindedly, like a piece of silverware. ~ Budd Schulberg
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Budd Schulberg
I used to babysit. And the kids I babysat were huge Hilary Duff fans, and so we used to have dance parties every day to her music. So I am very familiar with the albums of Miss Hilary Duff. ~ Gillian Jacobs
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Gillian Jacobs
Our fears can cause us to miss out on a lot of experiences and golden opportunities. Don't let your fears rob you of your life. ~ James Van Praagh
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by James Van Praagh
When I miss the good times,
I must remember that
No matter how hard I tried,
I could never wash the taste
Of doubt off my lips,
That every flavor of your kiss
Hit me with pungent loneliness
(Even when the touch of your
Hands felt like salvation),
And that this "safe space"
I worshiped through my poems
Was a product of my imagination
More than your words or actions. ~ Vironika Tugaleva
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Vironika Tugaleva
The tragedy of life is not so much what
men suffer, but rather what they miss. ~ Thomas Carlyle
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Thomas Carlyle
Men - ' said Miss Williams, and stopped.
As a rich property owner says 'Bolsheviks' - as an earnest Communist says 'Capitalists!' - as a good housewife says 'Blackbeetles' - so did Miss Williams say 'Men! ~ Agatha Christie
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Agatha Christie
For a time Jack was angry; but when he had been without the jacket for a short while he began to realize that being half-clothed is infinitely more uncomfortable than being entirely naked. Soon he did not miss his clothing in the least, and from that he came to revel in the freedom of his unhampered state. ~ Edgar Rice Burroughs
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Edgar Rice Burroughs
There's a lot I've missed about living in Ireland. You miss family, particularly when you've got kids. ~ Deirdre O'Kane
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Deirdre O'Kane
Here's the mark that a lot of people miss nowadays. Producers missed. They leave out the heart and soul. And that's what I learned from Sammy Davis, Jr., from Frank Sinatra, is when you went to go see those shows, you got to know them. ~ Donny Osmond
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Donny Osmond
I love auditioning. Since 'The Notebook' and 'Wedding Crashers,' I don't have to audition anymore, and I miss it. You get to show your interpretation of the character. I get nervous when I don't audition. What if they hate what I want to do? ~ Rachel McAdams
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Rachel McAdams
Everybody pays the heart lip service, of course, but everybody is more familiar with the absence of love than with its presence and gets so used to the feeling of emptiness that it becomes "normal." You don't miss the foundation of feeling until you begin to look for your self and can't find a support in the affects for a self. ~ Saul Bellow
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Saul Bellow
Miss Bertram could now speak with decided information of what she had known nothing about, ~ Jane Austen
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Jane Austen
We ate in fret-filled silence until Ophie said, "Okay, enough of that feeling down in the dumps. We are going to put on our best clothes and go to church. We will sing. We will praise the Lord. We will celebrate Miss Delia's life. So you two put a smile on your faces. Well-mannered ladies know that a funeral provides us the opportunity to comfort the living. There'll be plenty of time to mourn the dead for years to come." I ~ Terrie Farley Moran
Miss Lonelyhearts quotes by Terrie Farley Moran
He sighed. 'Your life is your own,Miss Kingston. We have only one. Don't allow anyone else to dictate to you what you should do with yours.'
She blinked and frowned as if she didn't understand what he meant.
'It's yours,' he advised softly. 'Don't waste it on petty conventions or conformity. Swim against the tide if you want to. ~ Val Wood
