Michigan State is always welcome at Ann Arbor. Your teams in all the various branches of athletics are more frequent visitors here than those of any other institution. This is as it should be, for not two universities are closer together in every way than Michigan State and Michigan. ~ Fielding H. Yost
Michigan State quotes by Fielding H. Yost
I'm pleased to say I am here for life at Michigan State. ~ Tom Izzo
Michigan State quotes by Tom Izzo
I am old enough to remember when America's K-12 public schools were the best in the world. I am a proud graduate of them, and I credit much of my success to what I learned in Detroit Public Schools and at Michigan State University. ~ Eli Broad
Michigan State quotes by Eli Broad
It would be a simple way of solving the goiter problem. And in addition to that it would be the biggest thing in a medical proposition to be carried out in the state of Michigan, and Michigan is a large place. And as I thought of the thing the more convinced I became that this oughtn't to be a personal thing, This ought to be something done by the Michigan State Medical Society as a body. Recommending the addition of a trace of iodine to table salt. ~ David Murray Cowie
Michigan State quotes by David Murray Cowie
from endless leg lifts and sit-ups in a gravel parking lot. When my calling to the Michigan State Police came with the murder of Howard Stoker, Rene's advice would cause me to examine carefully my own chain, and strive to strengthen all its ~ Clif Edwards
Michigan State quotes by Clif Edwards
You can take Saban's record when he was at Michigan State and when he was a coach in the Big Ten and put it against mine, and he can't compare. ~ Bret Bielema
Michigan State quotes by Bret Bielema
Right now, hail to the Michigan State Spartans. ~ Brent Musburger
Michigan State quotes by Brent Musburger
People interested in museums as real educational environments, parents interested in their children's education, and people seeking to find themselves in a positive way could all benefit from reading this book. by Associate Dean Engineering, Michigan State University ~ Ronald Rosenberg
Michigan State quotes by Ronald Rosenberg
The country was becoming increasingly disgusted by Prince Edward, which was making national headlines for its still-closed schools. Dr. Robert L. Green and a team of researchers from Michigan State University, funded by the US Office of Education, came to town, attempting to determine how black schoolchildren had been affected. They would soon learn that the illiteracy rate of black students ages five to twenty-two had jumped from 3 percent when the schools had closed to a staggering 23 percent. They found seven-year-old children who couldn't hold a pencil or make an X. Some didn't know how old they were; others couldn't communicate. ~ Kristen Green
Michigan State quotes by Kristen Green
Michigan State already has one of the coolest mascots in college football, but if Sparty ever needs a day off, Javon Ringer could do the job. After all, he already does just about everything else for MSU. ~ Javon Ringer
Michigan State quotes by Javon Ringer
My job is to make certain that I've done what I was asked and my department has done what we were asked to do by the president and the first lady and the State Department. I believe that we accomplished that. ~ Desiree Rogers
Michigan State quotes by Desiree Rogers
For 25 years, it has been my privilege to represent the city of San Francisco and the great state of California; to work to strengthen our vibrant middle class; to secure opportunity and equality. ~ Nancy Pelosi
Michigan State quotes by Nancy Pelosi
do not think I have ever met with a single fact which seems to me to justify the theory, of which Dr. von Martius is perhaps the leading advocate, that the ordinary condition of the savage is the result of degeneration from a far higher state. ~ Edward Burnett Tylor
Michigan State quotes by Edward Burnett Tylor
What we want, we have for our pains
The promise that if we but wait
Till the want has burned out of our brains,
Every means shall be present to state;
While we send for the napkin the soup gets cold,
While the bonnet is trimming the face grows old,
When we've matched our buttons the pattern is sold,
And everything comes too late-too late. ~ Fitz Hugh Ludlow
Michigan State quotes by Fitz Hugh Ludlow
No union exists between church and state, and perfect freedom of opinion is guaranteed to all sects and creeds. ~ James K. Polk
Michigan State quotes by James K. Polk
The state can be and has often been in the course of history the main source of mischief and disaster. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Michigan State quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
All you had to say was, 'I am a writer,' and you became one. You didn't even have to write anything. You could just sit in a coffee shop with a notebook and stare into space, with a slightly bemused look on your face, judging the weight of the world with a jaundiced eye. As you can see, you can be completely full of shit and still be a writer ... I also thought it was going to be a great way to meet girls, but it wasn't
probably because as I was staring into space, I no doubt looked mildly retarded. You see, I wanted to write plays, which in retrospect is a lot harder than learning Mandarin, I think. How I ended up in this delusional state shall be saved for another time. ~ Lewis Black
Michigan State quotes by Lewis Black
Laughter is really a gift. It's the most vulnerable state you can be in. ~ David Dobkin
Michigan State quotes by David Dobkin
The State is the altar of political freedom and, like the religious altar, it is maintained for the purpose of human sacrifice. ~ Emma Goldman
Michigan State quotes by Emma Goldman
Was I insane? Maybe. But then, there are many different kinds of insanity. Aunt Rose had always taken for granted that the whole world was in a state of constantly fluctuating madness, and that a neurosis was not an illness, but a fact of life, like pimples. Some have more, some have less, but only truly abnormal people have none at all. ~ Anne Fortier
Michigan State quotes by Anne Fortier
Once a week i have to do my radio show, 'A State of Trance', usually on Wednesday night. I try to go running at least three times a week and spend at least a day without turning my laptop on and spend it with my wife and daughter. ~ Armin Van Buuren
Michigan State quotes by Armin Van Buuren
Liberalism is a really old British tradition and it has a completely different attitude towards the individual and the relationship between the individual and the state than the collectivist response of Labour, and particularly Old Labour, does. ~ Nick Clegg
Michigan State quotes by Nick Clegg
Increasingly, the state system has been eroding. Terrorists have exploited this weakness by burrowing into the state system in order to attack it. ~ George P. Shultz
Michigan State quotes by George P. Shultz
I can be happy or unhappy in all situations. I am sure of it, because I have been. I have felt distraught and joyful in situations of abundance as well as poverty, in situations of popularity and anonymity, in situations of success and failure. The difference was never based on the situation itself, but always on my state of mind and heart. When I knew I was walking with God, I always felt happy and at peace. When I was entangled in my own complaints and emotional needs, I always felt restless and divided. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Michigan State quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
When men and women fail to form stable marriages, the result is a vast
expansion of government attempts to cope with the terrible social needs that result.
There is scarcely a dollar that the state and federal government spends on social
programs that is not driven, in large part, by family fragmentation: crime, poverty,
drug abuse, teen pregnancy, school failure, mental and physical health problems. ~ Maggie Gallagher
Michigan State quotes by Maggie Gallagher
In his book Politics, which is the foundation of the study of political systems, and very interesting, Aristotle talked mainly about Athens. But he studied various political systems - oligarchy, monarchy - and didn't like any of the particularly. He said democracy is probably the best system, but it has problems, and he was concerned with the problems. One problem that he was concerned with is quite striking because it runs right up to the present. He pointed out that in a democracy, if the people - people didn't mean people, it meant freemen, not slaves, not women - had the right to vote, the poor would be the majority, and they would use their voting power to take away property from the rich, which wouldn't be fair, so we have to prevent this.

James Madison made the same pint, but his model was England. He said if freemen had democracy, then the poor farmers would insist on taking property from the rich. They would carry out what we these days call land reform. and that's unacceptable. Aristotle and Madison faced the same problem but made the opposite decisions. Aristotle concluded that we should reduce ineqality so the poor wouldn't take property from the rich. And he actually propsed a visin for a city that would put in pace what we today call welfare-state programs, common meals, other support systems. That would reduce inequality, and with it the problem of the poor taking property from the rich. Madison's decision was the opposite. We should reduce democracy ~ Noam Chomsky
Michigan State quotes by Noam Chomsky
I live in a constant state of hyperbole. ~ Eden Sher
Michigan State quotes by Eden Sher
The US head of state grew up on food stamps. The British head of state grew up on the postage stamps. ~ Johann Hari
Michigan State quotes by Johann Hari
People ask me if I left the lyrics open to ambiguity. Of course I did. I wanted to make a whole series of complex statements. The lyrics had to do with the state of society at the time. ~ Don McLean
Michigan State quotes by Don McLean
Libertarian opponents of anarchy are attacking a straw man. Their arguments are usually utilitarian in nature and amount to "but anarchy won't work" or "we need the (things provided by the) state." But these attacks are confused at best, if not disingenuous. To be an anarchist does not mean you think anarchy will "work" (whatever that means); nor that you predict it will or "can" be achieved. It is possible to be a pessimistic anarchist, after all. To be an anarchist only means that you believe that aggression is not justified, and that states necessarily employ aggression. And, therefore, that states, and the aggression they necessarily employ, are unjustified. It's quite simple, really. It's an ethical view, so no surprise it confuses utilitarians.

Accordingly, anyone who is not an anarchist must maintain either: (a) aggression is justified; or (b) states (in particular, minimal states) do not necessarily employ aggression. ~ N. Stephan Kinsella
Michigan State quotes by N. Stephan Kinsella
[ ... ] the state is not immoral but amoral; half of it exists outside morality ~ Jacques Barzun
Michigan State quotes by Jacques Barzun
slavery never took the form of the large-scale plantations found in the American South, the Caribbean or South America. Plantations, though their establishment was desired by some colonists, were found to be incompatible with Canada's climate and short growing season (Mackey 2010). As a result, the number of enslaved people in Canada was always lower, and the economy less reliant on slave labour than other parts of the Americas and the Caribbean. These distinctions have underpinned the assumption in some existing scholarship that enslavement in Canada was relatively benign. Yet, the absence of slave plantation economies does not negate the brutality of the centuries-long, state-supported practice of slavery. White individuals and white settler society profited from owning unfree Black (and Indigenous) people and their labour for hundreds of years while exposing them to physical and psychological brutality, and the inferiority ascribed to Blackness in this era would affect the treatment of Black persons living in Canada for centuries to come. ~ Robyn Maynard
Michigan State quotes by Robyn Maynard
Students told me he was the most extraordinary man they'd ever encountered. He had seemed not quite of this world, they said. He seemed to live in a state of uninterrupted marvel, and he encouraged them to do the same. He didn't so much teach them how to write poetry, they said, but why: because of delight. Because of stubborn gladness. He told them that they must live their most creative lives as a means of fighting back against the ruthless furnace of this world. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Michigan State quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
A universal renunciation of violence requires the commitment of the whole of society. These are not matters of government but matters of State; not only matters for the authoirities, but for society in its entirety, including civilian, military, and religious bodies. The mobilization which is urgently needed to effect the transition within two or three years from a culture of war to a culture of peace demands co-operation from everyone. In order to change, the world needs everyone. ~ Federico Mayor Zaragoza
Michigan State quotes by Federico Mayor Zaragoza
Our Nation, a great stage for the acting out of great thoughts, presents the classic confrontation between Locke's views of the state of nature and Rousseau's criticism of them ... Nature is raw material, worthless without the mixture of human labor; yet nature is also the highest and most sacred thing. The same people who struggle to save the snail-darter bless the pill, worry about hunting deer and defend abortion. Reverence for nature, mastery of nature- whichever is convenient. ~ Allan Bloom
Michigan State quotes by Allan Bloom
And here one must not that hatred is acquired just as much by means of good actions as by bad ones; and so, as I said above, if a prince wishes to maintain the state, he is often obliged not to be good; because whenever that group which you believe you need to support you is corrupted, whether it be the common people, the soldiers, or the nobles, it is to your advantage to follow their inclinations in order to satisfy them; and then good actions are your enemy. ~ Niccolo Machiavelli
Michigan State quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
When we think that the machine will harm man, then it is perhaps because we are not yet capable of judging the rapid changes it has brought about. We hardly feel at home in this landscape of mines and power stations. We have just moved into this new home that we have not even finished yet. Everything around us has changed so fast - personal relations, working conditions, habits. Even our state of mind is in turmoil. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Michigan State quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
You can at least let sick people have marijuana because it's helpful. But the compassionate conservatives say, well we can't do this, we're going to put people who are sick and dying with cancer and are being helped with marijuana if they have multiple sclerosis - the federal government is going in there and overriding state laws and putting people like that in prison. ~ Ron Paul
Michigan State quotes by Ron Paul
I would like to achieve a state of inner spiritual grace from which I could function and give as I was meant to in the eye of God. ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Michigan State quotes by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
The nation-state is becoming less and less competent to perform its international political tasks ... These are some of the reasons pressing us to lead vigorously toward the true building of a new world order. ~ Nelson Rockefeller
Michigan State quotes by Nelson Rockefeller
A sex worker who is living precariously or in poverty, who is at risk of criminalization or police violence, or who is being exploited by a manager or lacks negotiating power is not likely to be particularly 'sex positive' at work. These factors are structural, not a function of the worker's state of enlightenment. ~ Molly Smith
Michigan State quotes by Molly Smith
A great many people (not you) do now seem to think that the mere state of being worried is in itself meritorious. I don't think it is. We must, if it so happens, give our lives for others: but even while we're doing it, I think we're meant to enjoy Our Lord and, in Him, our friends, our food, our sleep, our jokes, and the birds' song and the frosty sunrise. ~ C.S. Lewis
Michigan State quotes by C.S. Lewis
The state of inequality between individuals and between nations not only still exists; it is increasing. It still happens that side by side with those who are wealthy and living in plenty there exist those who are living in want, suffering misery and often actually dying of hunger; and their number reaches tens, even hundreds of millions. ~ Pope John Paul II
Michigan State quotes by Pope John Paul II
everyone who comes to California brings a little of his own state with him. His own old state, regardless of where or when, is always lurking in the back of his memory for comparison with what he finds here. ~ Max Miller
Michigan State quotes by Max Miller
No, I had no problem communicating with Latin American heads of state - though now I do wish I had paid more attention to Latin when I was in high school. ~ Dan Quayle
Michigan State quotes by Dan Quayle
The disposition, in any conflict, to side with 'them' against 'us', and the felt need to denigrate the customs, culture and institutions that are identifiably 'ours'. Being the opposite of xenophobia I propose to call this state of mind oikophobia, by which I mean (stretching the Greek a little) the repudiation of inheritance and home. ~ Roger Scruton
Michigan State quotes by Roger Scruton
We heads of state really prefer to have some sort of an agenda before we sit down at the high-stakes table, you know. All bad novelists notwithstanding, surprise and improvisation are not the best basis for successful diplomacy! ~ David Weber
Michigan State quotes by David Weber
The doctrine that bears Monroe's name - that the United States opposes all European intervention in the Western Hemisphere - owes much to the work of Monroe's secretary of state, John Quincy Adams, who was instrumental in the formulation of the policy. But it was also at least partly of Jeffersonian inspiration. In Jefferson's case, it was fitting that a man who had spent his life in pursuit of control would extend it as far as he could in the service of his nation, leaving a kind of last declaration of independence. This time it was a matter of policy, not of revolution. It was a declaration all the same. I ~ Jon Meacham
Michigan State quotes by Jon Meacham
All White House hopefuls we forewarn:
You'll have to prove that you were born.
Before Trump hits the state of granite,
He must identify the planet
Where he first took on human form -
A place where blowhards are the norm. ~ Calvin Trillin
Michigan State quotes by Calvin Trillin
Avoid excessive merriment. A mind in that state never becomes calm; it becomes fickle. Excessive merriment will always be followed by sorrow. Tears and laughter are near kin. People so often run from one extreme to the other. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Michigan State quotes by Swami Vivekananda
The planet will not survive another hundred years of the same state of consciousness that produced the external effects of recent history. ~ Eckhart Tolle
Michigan State quotes by Eckhart Tolle
What can a state institution teach us? In what way can I be reformed by a penal colony and you by, say, Russian TV Channel 1? In his Nobel lecture, Joseph Brodsky said, 'The more substantial an individual's aesthetic experience is, the sounder his taste, the sharper his moral focus, the freer - though not necessarily the happier - he is.' We in Russia once again find ourselves in a situation where resistance, especially aesthetic resistance, becomes the only viable moral choice as well as a civic duty." Nadya ~ Masha Gessen
Michigan State quotes by Masha Gessen
What an augmentation of the field for jobbing, speculating, plundering, office-building and office-hunting would be produced by an assumption of all the state powers into the hands of the general government. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Michigan State quotes by Thomas Jefferson
New Rule: You don't have to teach both sides of a debate if one side is a load of crap. President Bush recently suggested that public schools should teach "intelligent design" alongside the theory of evolution, because after all, evolution is "just a theory." Then the president renewed his vow to "drive the terrorists straight over the edge of the earth."

Here's what I don't get: President Bush is a brilliant scientist. He's the man who proved you could mix two parts booze with one part cocaine and still fly a jet fighter. And yet he just can't seem to accept that we descended from apes. It seems pathetic to be so insecure about your biological superiority to a group of feces-flinging, rouge-buttocked monkeys that you have to make up fairy tales like "We came from Adam and Eve," and then cover stories for Adam and Eve, like intelligent design! Yeah, leaving the earth in the hands of two naked teenagers, that's a real intelligent design.

I'm sorry, folks, but it may very well be that life is just a series of random events, and that there is no master plan--but enough about Iraq.

There aren't necessarily two sides to every issue. If there were, the Republicans would have an opposition party. And an opposition party would point out that even though there's a debate in schools and government about this, there is no debate among scientists. Evolution is supported by the entire scientific community. Intelligent design is supported by the guys on lin ~ Bill Maher
Michigan State quotes by Bill Maher
If we take the capsulation of minorities within the nation-state as a given condition, the implication of the Holocaust is that the life and liberties of minorities depend primarily upon whether the dominant group includes them within its universe of obligation; these are the bonds that hold or the bonds that break. ~ Helen Fein
Michigan State quotes by Helen Fein
Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused. ~ Louis Caldera
Michigan State quotes by Louis Caldera
A religion that needs state power to enforce obedience to its beliefs is a religion that has lost confidence in the power of its Deity. ~ Russell D. Moore
Michigan State quotes by Russell D. Moore
I was such a huge Bruce Willis fan because of all the Die Hards and Arnold Schwarzenegger was like 'the guy.' Kindergarten Cop was filmed in my home state and I was like, "He's awesome! Now he gets his hair cut next to me, it's fantastic. " ~ Katee Sackhoff
Michigan State quotes by Katee Sackhoff
Christians recognize that all social organizations exist as parodies of eschatological hope. And so it is that the city is a poor imitation of heavenly community;13 the modern state, a deformed version of the ecclesia;14 the market, a distortion of consummation; modern entertainment, a caricature of joy; schooling, a misrepresentation of true formation; liberalism, a crass simulacrum of freedom; and the sovereignty we accord to the self, a parody of God himself. As these institutions and ideals become ends in themselves, they become the objects of idolatry. The shalom of God - which is to say, the presence of God himself - is the antithesis to all such imitations. ~ James Davison Hunter
