In the "Republic," Plato vigorously attacked the oral, poetized form as a vehicle for communicating knowledge. He pleaded for a more precise method of communication and classification ("The Ideas"), one which would favor the investigation of facts, principles of reality, human nature, and conduct. What the Greeks meant by "poetry" was radically different from what we mean by poetry. Their "poetic" expression was a product of a collective psyche and mind. The mimetic form, a technique that exploited rhythm, meter and music, achieved the desired psychological response in the listener. Listeners could memorize with greater ease what was sung than what was said. Plato attacked this method because it discouraged disputation and argument. It was in his opinion the chief obstacle to abstract, speculative reasoning - he called it "a poison, and an enemy of the people. ~ Marshall McLuhan
Media Criticism quotes by Marshall McLuhan
The truth is that the more responsible the media outlet, the more responsive they are to constructive criticism. ~ David Brock
Media Criticism quotes by David Brock
Why is our media quick to find evil in our local police, but tnot in Islamic terror? ~ Greg Gutfeld
Media Criticism quotes by Greg Gutfeld
I guess all the time I spend on social media has made me believe that love exists above the surface, that it's supposed to be light all of the time. ~ Shannon Mullen
Media Criticism quotes by Shannon Mullen
The mainstream media has its own agenda. They do not want to print the facts. They have an agenda, they have a slant, they have a bias. It is outrageous to me. ~ Curt Weldon
Media Criticism quotes by Curt Weldon
Before Mags became a household name across Scotland, it was during the mid Nineties when she became an avid anti-paedophile campaigner against paedophiles on the Raploch Estate, attracting media attention, even appearing on Robert Kilroy-Silk's morning TV show. At the height of her anti-paedophilic crusade, she led a howling mob of protesters to a hostel near her home where a known paedophile was staying. ~ Stephen Richards
Media Criticism quotes by Stephen Richards
I am my own biggest critic. Before anyone else has criticized me, I have already criticized myself. But for the rest of my life, I am going to be with me and I don't want to spend my life with someone who is always critical. So I am going to stop being my own critic. It's high time that I accept all the great things about me. ~ C. JoyBell C.
Media Criticism quotes by C. JoyBell C.
Criticism, as it was first instituted by Aristotle, was meant as a standard of judging well. ~ Samuel Johnson
Media Criticism quotes by Samuel Johnson
There is nothing wrong with entertainment. As some psychiatrist once put it, we all build castles in the air. The problems come when we try to live in them. The communications media of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with telegraphy and photography at their center, called the peek-a-boo world into existence, but we did not come to live there until television. Television gave the epistemological biases of the telegraph and the photograph their most potent expression, raising the interplay of image and instancy to an exquisite and dangerous perfection. And it brought them into the home. We are by now well into a second generation of children for whom television has been their first and most accessible teacher and, for many, their most reliable companion and friend. To put it plainly, television is the command center of the new epistemology. There is no audience so young that it is barred from television. There is no poverty so abject that it must forgo television. There is no education so exalted that it is not modified by television. And most important of all, there is no subject of public interest - politics, news, education, religion, science, sports - that does not find its way to television. Which means that all public understanding of these subjects is shaped by the biases of television. ~ Neil Postman
Media Criticism quotes by Neil Postman
Fox News is nothing if not impressive. No matter how harsh the criticism it endures, the network somehow always manages to prove itself even worse than we had previously imagined. ~ Eric Alterman
Media Criticism quotes by Eric Alterman
First of all I will confess quite simply - I believe that the Bible alone is the answer to all our questions, and that we need only to ask repeatedly and a little humbly, in order to receive this answer. One cannot simply read the Bible, like other books. One must be prepared really to enquire of it. Only thus will it reveal itself. Only if we expect from it the ultimate answer, shall we receive it. That is because in the Bible God speaks to us. And one cannot simply think about God in one's own strength, one has to enquire of him. Only if we seek him, will he answer us. Of course it is also possible to read the Bible like any other book, that is to say from the point of view of textual criticism, etc.; there is nothing to be said against that. Only that that is not the method which will reveal to us the heart of the Bible, but only the surface, just as we do not grasp the words of someone we love by taking them to bits, but by simply receiving them, so that for days they go on lingering in our minds, simply because they are the words of a person we love; and just as these words reveal more and more of the person who said them as we go on, like Mary, "pondering them in our heart," so it will be with the words of the Bible. Only if we will venture to enter into the words of the Bible, as though in them this God were speaking to us who loves us and does not will to leave us along with our questions, only so shall we learn to rejoice in the Bible. . . . ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Media Criticism quotes by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The television anchorman Dan Rather turns up in rag-top native drag in Afghanistan, the surrogate of our culture with his camera crew, intrepid as Sir Richard Burton sneaking into Mecca. ~ Lance Morrow
Media Criticism quotes by Lance Morrow
It really is my opinion that media in general are so bad that we have to question whether the world wouldn't be better off without them altogether. They are so distortive to how the world actually is that the result is.. we see wars, and we see corrupt governments continue on. ~ Julian Assange
Media Criticism quotes by Julian Assange
In the future, the great division will be between those who have trained themselves to handle these complexities and those who are overwhelmed by them
those who can acquire skills and discipline their minds and those who are irrevocably distracted by all the media around them and can enver focus enough to learn. ~ Robert Greene
Media Criticism quotes by Robert Greene
I purposely used a pretty cocky, abrasive writing style in Sex and Crime, to stir up some drama. My confrontational style quickly became the talk of the scene. Some of the things I wrote were so inflammatory, people had to vent about it on online forums. So suddenly everyone in the scene was talking about Sex and Crime, just as I had hoped. I enjoyed playing the role of agitator, and people from competing hacking crews didn't even realize that the more they bitched about the things I wrote, the more credibility and notoriety they were adding to my scene mag. Thanks to all the positive as well as negative feedback I was getting, the things I wrote actually mattered. Suddenly I was the most important opinion maker in the scene. ~ Oliver Markus
Media Criticism quotes by Oliver Markus
[M]embers of the media-monetary-military-congressional complex are immoral and have an allergy to the truth. ~ Ilana Mercer
Media Criticism quotes by Ilana Mercer
Nature as a means of reproduction is important for these intellectual workers because the specialisation and one-sidedness of their work generates psychological instability and requires periods of complete relaxation without jarring sensorial stimuli (noise, media, social contacts). Nature is the most efficient compensation for intellectual stress since it represents the unity of body and mind against the capitalist division of labour. Extensive consumption of nature has traditionally been an element of the re-production of intellectual workers. (It started with Rousseau, then came the Romantics, Thoreau, the early tourists, Tolstoi, artists' colonies in the Alps, etc). The ecological movement responds directly to the class interests of the intellectual sector of the proletariat and the struggle against nuclear power plants is a mere extension of this struggle. ~ Anonymous
Media Criticism quotes by Anonymous
And when you are foolish enough to identify yourself as a poet, your interlocutors will often ask: A PUBLISHED Poet? And when you tell them that you are, indeed, a published poet, they seem at least vaguely impressed. Why is that? Its not like they or anybody they know reads poetry journals. And yet there is something deeply right, I think, about this knee-jerk appeal to publicity. It's as if to say: Everybody can write a poem, but has your poetry, the distillation of your innermost being, been found authentic and intelligible by others? Can it circulate among persons, make of its readership, however small, a People in that sense? This accounts for the otherwise bafflingly persistent association of Poetry and fame - baffling since no poets are famous among the general population. To demand proof of fame is to demand proof that your songs made it back intact from the dream in the stable to the social world of the fire, that your song is at once utterly specific to you and exemplary for others. ~ Ben Lerner
Media Criticism quotes by Ben Lerner
Don't call your family 'the fam', Sean. It sounds douchey. Another two syllables won't kill you," I chided playfully.

Sean's smirk indicated he was enjoying my criticism, and I didn't understand that, either. "This coming from the girl with hair like a packet of Skittles."

"My hair isn't douchey," I said, and flicked a few locks over my shoulder. "It brings joy to all those who gaze upon it. ~ L.H. Cosway
Media Criticism quotes by L.H. Cosway
Insanity is a direct and appropriate response to the coercive inauthenticity of society ... it is an act, expressing the intention of the insane person to meet and overcome to coercive situation; and whether or not it succeed in this intention, it is at least an act of criticism which exposes the true nature of society ~ Lionel Trilling
Media Criticism quotes by Lionel Trilling
They [the critics] deal with Schoenberg's early works and all their wealth by classifying them, with the music-historical cliché, as late romantic post-Wagnerian. One might just as well dispose of Beethoven as a late-classicist post-Haydnerian. ~ Theodor W. Adorno
Media Criticism quotes by Theodor W. Adorno
I have this reputation of not wanting to talk to the media, which isn't true. What I don't like-what a lot of us don't understand-is how we can say one thing and it turns up in print as something else. ~ Vijay Singh
Media Criticism quotes by Vijay Singh
On the intimate relationships, I'd say you can be someone who wouldn't normally get attention in traditional media and come onto Instagram and build this massive following. ~ Kevin Systrom
Media Criticism quotes by Kevin Systrom
Social media had the unique ability to turn adults into immature slaves to drama. ~ Santino Hassell
Media Criticism quotes by Santino Hassell
Believe in Your Ability to Cope with Negative Feedback

Just like everyone has a vision blind spot, everyone has cognitive blond spots that can lead to making less than stellar choices. For example, you think an outfit looks good on you, and in reality it doesn't. Or you thought you understood what your boss wanted but later realize you took the instructions in an unintended direction. Since we all have blind spots, making some mistakes and getting some negative feedback is unavoidable. Therefore, unless you plan to go live in a cave, you're going to need a game plan for how you'll cognitively and emotionally cope when negative feedback happens. We'll cover behavioral strategies later in the chapter, but let's work on the thinking and emotional aspects for now.
Experiment: Think about a specific scenario in which you fear negative feedback. If your fears came true:

--How would you go about making the required changes?
--How could you be self-accepting of your sensitivity to criticism? How could you talk to yourself gently about the emotions you're feeling instead of criticizing yourself for feeling upset? How could you be patient with yourself while you're having those feelings?
--What self-care would you do while you wait for your heart and upset feelings to pass? (Yes, rewatching episodes of '90s TV is a totally acceptable answer.)
--What personal support would you access to cope with your emotions? For example, you'd talk to a frie ~ Alice Boyes
Media Criticism quotes by Alice Boyes
For an older generation of employees, social media often remains misunderstood and underutilized. ~ Ryan Holmes
Media Criticism quotes by Ryan Holmes
They're not your words, but you're reciting the lines. ~ Matthew Sweet
Media Criticism quotes by Matthew Sweet
If only people fought undeserved praise as much as they do unfair criticism. ~ Mardy Grothe
Media Criticism quotes by Mardy Grothe
What the public criticizes in you, cultivate. It is you. ~ Jean Cocteau
Media Criticism quotes by Jean Cocteau
A good rule, for this job and many others: give praise publicly and criticism privately. The ~ Jonathan Kern
Media Criticism quotes by Jonathan Kern
We artists stick ourselves out. This in itself deserves respect. ~ Robert Genn
Media Criticism quotes by Robert Genn
Politicians usually get the blame for dragging their feet on environmental issues. And fair enough. Most of them do just that. But the blame isn't theirs alone. For politicians afraid of losing votes, a bristling media waiting to transform good green ideas into monsters is a colossal disincentive. ~ Zac Goldsmith
Media Criticism quotes by Zac Goldsmith
Maybe it is the media that has us divided. ~ Laura Bush
Media Criticism quotes by Laura Bush
You can't learn to act unless you're criticized. If you tie that criticism to your childhood insecurities you'll have a terrible time. Instead, you must take criticism objectively, pertaining it only to the work being done. ~ Sanford Meisner
Media Criticism quotes by Sanford Meisner
The mother myth gives great cover to unloving mothers, who far too often operate undisturbed while their husbands, other family members, and society deflect any criticism or scrutiny aimed at them. Most societies glorify mothers, as if the mere act of giving birth makes them inherently capable of nurturing. That's simply not true. ~ Susan Forward
Media Criticism quotes by Susan Forward
A conservative party that reshapes its self-presentation according to the suggestions of the liberal media, of course, may very well get what such lack of courage deserves. Having been told by their opponents for years that the key to Republican victory was a softening of the message and more smiles, Republicans have now apparently taken a big dose of this medicine. One might counsel more caution in accepting medicine from one's enemies. ~ Alan Keyes
Media Criticism quotes by Alan Keyes
The biblical teaching is clear. It always contests political power . It incites to "counterpower," to "positive" criticism , to an irreducible dialogue (like that between king and prophet in Israel ), to antistatism, to a decentralizing of the relation, to an extreme relativizing of everything political, to an anti-ideology, to a questioning of all that claims either power or dominion (in other words, of all things political), and finally, if we may use a modern term, to a kind of " anarchism " (so long as we do not relate the term to the anarchist teaching of the nineteenth century). ~ Jacques Ellul
Media Criticism quotes by Jacques Ellul
It's often the case that successful people invite criticism. ~ Michael Gove
Media Criticism quotes by Michael Gove
Most of promoting seems unnatural to me, and I wish I didn't have to do it. I'm not especially good at tooting my own horn. However, I do love to connect with readers. That's why I try to keep up with my social media even when I don't have a new book coming out. ~ Linda Conrad
Media Criticism quotes by Linda Conrad
It doesn't matter whether a sequence of words is called a history or a story: that is, whether it is intended to follow a sequence of actual events or not. As far as its verbal shape is concerned, it will be equally mythical in either case. But we notice that any emphasis on shape or structure or pattern or form always throws a verbal narrative in the direction we call mythical rather than historical.(p.21) ~ Northrop Frye
Media Criticism quotes by Northrop Frye
Traditional social media, in the view of our company, has become a bit repetitive. It doesn't feel very good to be marketed to by your friends. Snapchat is different because it says, look, friends aren't valuable to you just because they can get you into a cool party. ~ Evan Spiegel
Media Criticism quotes by Evan Spiegel
All my friends are rock critics, so we talk about rock criticism a lot. Because of that, in order to be part of the conversation, you have to have an awareness of what the discussion is. ~ Chuck Klosterman
Media Criticism quotes by Chuck Klosterman
Social networks are so full of wasted time - they could be compared to a waste disposal system. Flush, before you go and waste no time to go. ~ Will Advise
Media Criticism quotes by Will Advise
You don't want your relationship to be in the press, but at the same time, and this is only a theory, the more you try and keep it secret, the more the media tries to crack it open. ~ Jennifer Lawrence
Media Criticism quotes by Jennifer Lawrence
I never, ever have seen media this way. It's almost indescribable. Making up stories, refusing to run real stories. It's making themselves look like utter fools. There's no journalism, there is no media. There's pure, full-fledged advocacy here. ~ Rush Limbaugh
Media Criticism quotes by Rush Limbaugh
If you want to criticize someone, do not compare him with an imaginary creature but yourself. ~ Alireza Salehi Nejad
Media Criticism quotes by Alireza Salehi Nejad
Listening to teens talk about social media addiction reveals an interest not in features of their computers, smartphones, or even particular social media sites but in each other. ~ Danah Boyd
Media Criticism quotes by Danah Boyd
A critic can call any poem 'doggerel.' That is no more than a slur. 'Doggerel' or 'maudlin' or 'sappy' or 'sentimental' is in the ear of the listener. By the by, 'sentimental' is okay as it is defined as 'marked or governed by feeling, sensibility, or emotional idealism.' It is 'sentimentality' that is to be avoided, like the fiddleback spider, being as it is 'the quality or state of being sentimental to excess or in affectation.' Again we are faced with a judgement call and must keep a sharp eye on our outpourings to insure they are not overly gooey.

The intellectual elite probably believe that most of the lyrics songwriters create are 'doggerel' of one kind or another--that is to say 'trivial"......the young songwriter has now been warned about the implacable nature of the enemy. Under a rather large umbrella, preferred twentieth-century taste in art of all kinds has been characterized by a kind of detachment, or sangfroid. It is simply not chic to be carried away in one's emotional reaction to a subject. All serious communication or complaint must be carefully wrapped in a protective coating of irony and/or satire. ~ Jimmy Webb
Media Criticism quotes by Jimmy Webb
I think life is a lot different for alternative kids nowadays. Texting and the internet mean that being a Goth or something means you're part of a big social scene, it's an inclusive thing. Back then, we all just went our different ways in the afterglow, wishing each other all the best with the next ten years of bullying. ~ Frankie Boyle
Media Criticism quotes by Frankie Boyle
You hear players, media people, say that it's tough to play in Philly in front of these fans, to those people I say: you didn't have the guts to succeed here! ~ John Kruk
