Rome was not the first state of organized gangsterdom, nor was it the last; but it was the only one that managed to bamboozle posterity into an almost universal admiration. Few rational men admire the Huns, the Nazis or the Soviets; but for centuries, schoolboys have been expected to read Julius Caesar's militaristic drivel ("We inflicted heavy losses upon the enemy, our own casualties being very light") and Cato's revolting incitements to war. They have been led to believe that the Romans had attained an advanced level in the sciences, the arts, law, architecture, engineering and everything else. It is my opinion that the alleged Roman achievements are largely a myth; and I feel it is time for this myth to be debunked a little. What the Romans excelled in was bullying, bludgeoning, butchering and blood baths. Like the Soviet Empire, the Roman Empire enslaved peoples whose cultural level was far above their own. They not only ruthlessly vandalized their countries, but they also looted them, stealing their art treasures, abducting their scientists and copying their technical know-how, which the Romans' barren society was rarely able to improve on. No wonder, then, that Rome was filled with great works of art. But the light of culture which Rome is supposed to have emanated was a borrowed light: borrowed from the Greeks and the other peoples that the Roman militarists had enslaved. ~ Petr Beckmann
Great Works Of Art quotes by Petr Beckmann
The civilized people of today look back with horror at their medieval ancestors who wantonly destroyed great works of art or sat slothfully by while they destroyed. We have passed this stage ... Here in the U.S. we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy our forests and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals - not to speak of vulgarizing charming landscapes with hideous advertisements. But at best it looks as if our people were awakening. ~ Theodore Roosevelt
Great Works Of Art quotes by Theodore Roosevelt
Great works of art in all cultures succeed in capturing within the constraints of their form both the pathos of anguish and a vision of its resolution. Take, for example, the languorous sentences of Proust or the haiku of Basho, the late quartets and sonatas of Beethoven, the tragicomic brushwork of Sengai or the daunting canvases of Rothko, the luminous self-portraits of Rembrandt and Hakuin. Such works achieve their resolution not through consoling or romantic images whereby anguish is transcended. They accept anguish without being overwhelmed by it. They reveal anguish as that which gives beauty its dignity and depth. ~ Stephen Batchelor
Great Works Of Art quotes by Stephen Batchelor
It is often said that great works of art are "inexhaustible" - capable, as Stanley Olson put it, of "endless interpretation. But Lubin, the Charlotte C. Weber Professor of Art at Wake Forest University, demonstrates in painful if inadvertently hilarious detail that this does not mean that works of art are immune from - that they are not in fact often subject to - wild and perverse misinterpretation. ~ Roger Kimball
Great Works Of Art quotes by Roger Kimball
All the great things we know have come to us from neurotics. It is they who have founded religions and created great works of art. ~ Marcel Proust
Great Works Of Art quotes by Marcel Proust
An acquaintance with the great works of art and thought is the only real insurance against the barbarism of the time. ~ Edmund Wilson
Great Works Of Art quotes by Edmund Wilson
The great works of art and literature have a lot to say on how to tackle the concrete challenges of living, like how to escape the chains of public opinion, how to cope with grief or how to build loving friendships. Instead of organizing classes around academic concepts - 19th-century French literature - more could be organized around the concrete challenges students will face in the first decade after graduation. ~ David Brooks
Great Works Of Art quotes by David Brooks
That which interests most people leaves me without any interest at all. This includes a list of things such as: social dancing, riding roller coasters, going to zoos, picnics, movies, planetariums, watching tv, baseball games; going to funerals, weddings, parties, basketball games, auto races, poetry readings, museums, rallies, demonstrations, protests, children's plays, adult plays ... I am not interested in beaches, swimming, skiing, Christmas, New Year's, the 4th of July, rock music, world history, space exploration, pet dogs, soccer, cathedrals and great works of Art. How can a man who is interested in almost nothing write about anything? Well, I do. I write and I write about what's left over: a stray dog walking down the street, a wife murdering her husband, the thoughts and feelings of a rapist as he bites into a hamburger sandwich; life in the factory, life in the streets and rooms of the poor and mutilated and the insane, crap like that, I write a lot of crap like that ~ Charles Bukowski
Great Works Of Art quotes by Charles Bukowski
Great works of art are only great because they are accessible and comprehensible to everyone. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Great Works Of Art quotes by Leo Tolstoy
man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the luster of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without notice his thought, because it is his. In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts: [152] they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good-humored inflexibility then most when [153] the whole cry of voices is on the other side. Else, to-morrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and felt all the time, and we shall be forced to take with shame our own opinion from another. There ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Great Works Of Art quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Love that dare not speak its name" in this century is such a great affection of an elder for a younger man as there was between David and Jonathan, such as Plato made the very basis of his philosophy, and such as you find in the sonnets of Michelangelo and Shakespeare. It is that deep, spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect. It dictates and pervades great works of art like those of Shakespeare and Michelangelo, and those two letters of mine, such as they are. It is in this century misunderstood, so much misunderstood that it may be described as the "Love that dare not speak its name," and on account of it I am placed where I am now. It is beautiful, it is fine, it is the noblest form of affection. There is nothing unnatural about it. It is intellectual, and it repeatedly exists between an elder and a younger man, when the elder man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him. That it should be so, the world does not understand. The world mocks at it and sometimes puts one in the pillory for it. ~ Oscar Wilde
Great Works Of Art quotes by Oscar Wilde
Workshops, churches, and palaces were full of these fatal works of art; he had even helped with a few himself. They were deeply disappointing because they aroused the desire for the highest and did not fulfill it. They lacked to most essential thing - mystery. That was what dreams and truly great works of art had in common: mystery... It is mystery I love and pursue. ~ Hermann Hesse
Great Works Of Art quotes by Hermann Hesse
The fact that there are so many weak, poor and boring stories and novels written and published in America has been ascribed by our rebels to the horrible squareness of our institutions, the idiocy of power, the debasement of sexual instincts, and the failure of writers to be alienated enough. The poems and novels of these same rebellious spirits, and their theoretical statements, are grimy and gritty and very boring too, besides being nonsensical, and it is evident by now that polymorphous sexuality and vehement declarations of alienation are not going to produce great works of art either. ~ Saul Bellow
Great Works Of Art quotes by Saul Bellow
I hate performers who debase great works of art; I long for their annihilation. ~ George Bernard Shaw
Great Works Of Art quotes by George Bernard Shaw
Give yourself to these great works of art. They suffice for a lifetime. ~ Iris Murdoch
Great Works Of Art quotes by Iris Murdoch
Many great works of art, poetry, and music are inspired by astral memories. The desire to do noble, beautiful things here on Earth is also often a carryover of astral experiences between a person's earth lives. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Great Works Of Art quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
Poe had this curious kind of alchemical courage, where he took all the terrible things and terrors that happened in his life, all this shame and fear and pain, and turned them into great works of art. He was a complex, brilliant person who was just wired too tight. ~ John Cusack
Great Works Of Art quotes by John Cusack
When I look at great works of art or listen to inspired music, I sense intimate portraits of the specific times in which they were created. ~ Billy Joel
Great Works Of Art quotes by Billy Joel
One thing, however, did become clear to him - why so many perfect works of art did not please him at all, why they were almost hateful and boring to him, in spite of a certain undeniable beauty. Workshops, churches, and palaces were full of these fatal works of art; he had even helped with a few himself. They were deeply disappointing because they aroused the desire for the highest and did not fulfill it. They lacked the most essential thing - mystery. That was what dreams and truly great works of art had in common: mystery. ~ Hermann Hesse
Great Works Of Art quotes by Hermann Hesse
Everything we think of as great has come to us from neurotics. It is they and they alone who found religions and create great works of art. The world will never realize how much it owes to them and what they have suffered in order to bestow their gifts on it. ~ Marcel Proust
Great Works Of Art quotes by Marcel Proust
Words are like shards of glass. By themselves they're worthless; however, when placed together in just the right way, they can become great works of art. ~ Leigh M. Lane
Great Works Of Art quotes by Leigh M. Lane
The reality is that art has often risen to greater heights than the people who created it. Many flawed artists have created great works of art. You have to decide if you are going to listen to Richard Wagner's music or not because he was very anti-Semitic. ~ Gavin Hood
Great Works Of Art quotes by Gavin Hood
Creativity is more than the capacity to be inventive or innovative; it's more than the ability to create great works of art, music, or dance. Creativity is an inherent tool that's needed for wellness. ~ Laurie Buchanan
Great Works Of Art quotes by Laurie Buchanan
There are people who buy pictures because they were difficult to do, and are done. Such pictures are often only a record of pain and dull perseverance. Great works of art should look as though they were made in joy. Real joy is a tremendous activity, dull drudgery is nothing to it. ~ Robert Henri
Great Works Of Art quotes by Robert Henri
I don't know what motivated the artist, which means that the paintings have an intrinsic quality. I think Goethe called it the 'essential dimension,' the thing that makes great works of art great. ~ Gerhard Richter
Great Works Of Art quotes by Gerhard Richter
Whatever the practical origins of aesthetic discernment may have been, it has been used to create great works of art. When the very loftiest human creations are seen to derive from humble origins and functions, what needs revision is not our esteem for these creations but our notion of nobility. ~ Robert Nozick
Great Works Of Art quotes by Robert Nozick
I feel genius in great works of art. I have seen medical cures that science can't explain, some seemingly triggered by faith. The same is true of millions of other people. ~ Deepak Chopra
Great Works Of Art quotes by Deepak Chopra
The ancients of the ideal description, instead of trying to turn their impracticable chimeras, as does the modern dreamer, into social and political prodigies, deposited them in great works of art, which still live while states and constitutions have perished, bequeathing to posterity not shameful defects but triumphant successes. ~ Herman Melville
Great Works Of Art quotes by Herman Melville
Less disappointing than life, great works of art do not begin by giving us all their best. ~ Marcel Proust
Great Works Of Art quotes by Marcel Proust
There is in every artist's studio a scrap heap of discarded works in which the artist's discipline prevailed against his imagination. ~ Robert Breault
Great Works Of Art quotes by Robert Breault
Mr. Russell is a great believer in versatility in all creative work. In any physical work he believes one can work many hours at a time, but in mental, creative work he believes one can do his best only for two hours at a time on any one subject, but he can work another two hours on another subject with equal freshness. He therefore sometimes works two hours a day on each of five different creations, and in that way can live five lives at a time. ~ Walter Russell
Great Works Of Art quotes by Walter Russell
I want to be a work of art, at least in my soul, since I can't be one in my body. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Great Works Of Art quotes by Fernando Pessoa
Time is, in fact, a cross to bear, it passes on inexorably and remorselessly, destroying everything in its wake, save art and works of the intellect. ~ Jack Schmitt
Great Works Of Art quotes by Jack Schmitt
"The work of art must seize upon you ... carry you away." ~ Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Great Works Of Art quotes by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Works of Art can only be produc'd in Perfection where the Man is either in Affluence or is Above the Care of it. ~ William Blake
Great Works Of Art quotes by William Blake
The idea of childhood as a social invention, in retrospect, is hardly credible. In the Bible, in writings of the Greeks and Romans, and in the works of the first great educator of the modern era, Comenius, children were recognized as being both different from adults and different from one another with respect to their stages of development. To be sure, the scientific study of children and the increased length of life in modern times have enhanced our understanding of age differences, but they have always been acknowledged. ~ David Elkind
Great Works Of Art quotes by David Elkind
Nothing could be less conducive to reaching an art-work than critical remarks:it's always simply a matter of more or less fortunate misunderstandings. Everything cannot be so easily grasped and conveyed as we are generally led to believe; most events are unconveyable and come to pass in a space that no word has ever penetrated; more unconveyable than all else are art-works, whose mysterious existences, whose lives run alongside ours, which perishes, whereas theirs endure. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Great Works Of Art quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
In the way that scepticism is sometimes applied to issues of public concern, there is a tendency to belittle, to condescend, to ignore the fact that, deluded or not, supporters of superstition and pseudoscience are human beings with real feelings, who, like the sceptics, are trying to figure out how the world works and what our role in it might be. Their motives are in many cases consonant with science. If their culture has not given them all the tools they need to pursue this great quest, let us temper our criticism with kindness. None of us comes fully equipped. ~ Carl Sagan
Great Works Of Art quotes by Carl Sagan
She was a great and insatiable reader, surprisingly well acquainted with the classics of literature, and unexpectedly lavish in the purchase of books. Her neighbours never forgot to mention, in describing her, the awe-inspiring fact that she 'took in the English Times and the Saturday Review, and read every word of them,' but it was hinted that the bookshelves that her own capable hands had put up in her bedroom held a large proportion of works of fiction of a startlingly advanced kind, 'and,' it was generally added in tones of mystery, 'many of them French. ~ Edith Somerville
Great Works Of Art quotes by Edith Somerville
You do need prayer, more than you know, ' Carita said softly. 'Prayer is the keynote. Prayer isn't the preparation to accomplish the purposes of Adon Olam. It is the accomplishment of His purposes. Great works are done through prayer. ~ Erika Mathews
Great Works Of Art quotes by Erika Mathews
I have a lot of blurring between fiction and non-fiction in so many of my works. For example, my first novel, 'When Nietzsche Wept,' has a great deal of non-fiction in it. I didn't create many characters at all. Almost all of them are historical characters that actually existed. ~ Irvin D. Yalom
Great Works Of Art quotes by Irvin D. Yalom
The usual criticism of a novel about an artist is that, no matter how real he is as a man, he is not real to us as an artist, since we have to take on trust the works of art he produces. ~ Randall Jarrell
Great Works Of Art quotes by Randall Jarrell
Rest assured, dear friend, that many noteworthy and great sciences and arts have been discovered through the understanding and subtlety of women, both in cognitive speculation, demonstrated in writing, and in the arts, manifested in manual works of labor. I will give you plenty of examples. Christine de Pizan, The Book of the City of Ladies 1405 ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Great Works Of Art quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
O fairest of all creation, last and best
Of all God's works, creature in whom excelled
Whatever can to sight or thought be formed,
Holy, divine, good, amiable, or sweet!
How art thou lost, how on a sudden lost,
Defaced, deflow'red, and now to death devote? ~ John Milton
Great Works Of Art quotes by John Milton
I like challenge. I like to be put into a situation which I haven't done before. Something new presents itself and I see if I can somehow finagle it into making a work of art out of it. ~ Robert Barry
Great Works Of Art quotes by Robert Barry
There is something wrong with a work of art if it can be understood by a policeman. ~ Patrick Kavanagh
Great Works Of Art quotes by Patrick Kavanagh
You are a grand nerveux, Vincent," Doctor Rey had told him. "You never have been normal. But then, no artist is normal; if he were, he wouldn't be an artist. Normal men don't create works of art. They eat, sleep, hold down routine jobs, and die. You are hypersensitive to life and nature; that's why you are able to interpret for the rest of us. But if you are not careful, that very hypersensitiveness will lead you to your destruction. The strain of it breaks every artist in time. ~ Irving Stone
Great Works Of Art quotes by Irving Stone
The art of holding on to money is all about saying no to consumer culture. Saying no to takeout, $4 lattes, and that shiny new computer when the old one still works fine. ~ Austin Kleon
Great Works Of Art quotes by Austin Kleon
3. Count not thyself better than others, lest perchance thou appear worse in the sight of God, who knoweth what is in man. Be not proud of thy good works, for God's judgments are of another sort than the judgments of man, and what pleaseth man is ofttimes displeasing to Him. If thou hast any good, believe that others have more, and so thou mayest preserve thy humility. It is no harm to thee if thou place thyself below all others; but it is great harm if thou place thyself above even one. Peace is ever with the humble man, but in the heart of the proud there is envy and continual wrath. ~ Thomas A Kempis
Great Works Of Art quotes by Thomas A Kempis
Efforts to revive the art principles of the past at best produce works of art that resemble a stillborn child. ~ Wassily Kandinsky
Great Works Of Art quotes by Wassily Kandinsky
Learn how to meditate on paper. Drawing and writing are forms of meditation. Learn how to contemplate works of art. Learn how to pray in the streets or in the country. Know how to meditate not only when you have a book in your hand but when you are waiting for a bus or riding in a train. ~ Thomas Merton
Great Works Of Art quotes by Thomas Merton
People so often loose sight of the magic in life once they understand how it works. ~ Thomas Rogal II
Great Works Of Art quotes by Thomas Rogal II
Art, if it is successful, needs no explanation. ~ Leonard Nimoy
Great Works Of Art quotes by Leonard Nimoy
Beautiful buildings are more than scientific. They are true organisms, spiritually conceived; works of art, using the best technology by inspiration rather than the idiosyncrasies of mere taste or any averaging by the committee mind. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Great Works Of Art quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
The best works of art are never innocuous: they alter the viewer's perceptual predictions. It is only when the patterns of our vision are disrupted that we truly pay attention and must ask ourselves what we are looking at. ~ Siri Hustvedt
Great Works Of Art quotes by Siri Hustvedt
What a blessing that there is the one way of pardon! Why should we seek another? Persons of merely formal religion cannot understand how we can rejoice that all our sins are forgiven us for Christ's sake. Their works, and prayers, and ceremonies, give them very poor comfort; and well may they be uneasy, for they are neglecting the one great salvation, and endeavouring to get remission without blood. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Great Works Of Art quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Like a work of art, we exceed our materials. Science needs art to frame the mystery, but art needs science so that not everything is a mystery. Neither truth alone is our solution, for our reality exists in plural ~ Jonah Lehrer
Great Works Of Art quotes by Jonah Lehrer
Some of the most unhappy artists in the most difficult situations can create awe-inspiring works of art. ~ Eric Gibbons
Great Works Of Art quotes by Eric Gibbons
Beauty is not the purpose of creation, it is its reward. Its appearance, often late in the day, is no more than an indication that the disrupted equilibrium between man and nature has once again been restored by art. Submitted to this test, what remains of contemporary works of art? ~ Brassai
Great Works Of Art quotes by Brassai
The great philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries did not think that epistemological questions floated free of questions about how the mind works. Those philosophers took a stand on all sorts of questions which nowadays we would classify as questions of psychology, and their views about psychological questions shaped their views about epistemology, as well they should have. ~ Hilary Kornblith
Great Works Of Art quotes by Hilary Kornblith
We're all works of art in progress. ~ Carmen Dell'Orefice
Great Works Of Art quotes by Carmen Dell'Orefice
I believe that a picture, a work of art, lives and dies just as we do ... ~ Marcel Duchamp
Great Works Of Art quotes by Marcel Duchamp
Every successful work of art is a collaboration between the known and the unknown. ~ Marty Rubin
Great Works Of Art quotes by Marty Rubin
If you are not skillful enough to sketch a man jumping out of a window in the time it takes him to fall from the fourth storey to the ground, you will never be able to produce great works. ~ Eugene Delacroix
Great Works Of Art quotes by Eugene Delacroix
The science of design, or of line-drawing, if you like to use this term, is the source and very essence of painting, sculpture, architecture ... Sometimes ... it seems to me that ... all the works of the human brain and hand are either design itself or a branch of that art. ~ Michelangelo
Great Works Of Art quotes by Michelangelo
To have read the greatest works of any great poet, to have beheld or heard the greatest works of any great painter or musician, is a possession added to the best things of life. ~ Algernon Charles Swinburne
Great Works Of Art quotes by Algernon Charles Swinburne
Recognize things when they are at their best, in their season, and know how to enjoy them then. The works of nature all amount to a peak of perfection; up to it they wax, beyond it they wane. Only in matters of art have a few gone to the point where they might not be improved. It is the mark of cultivated taste to enjoy everything at its best. But all may not do this, and not all who may, know how. Even the fruits of the spirit have their moment of ripeness, and it is well to recognize this, in order to value it properly and attend to it. ~ Baltasar Gracian
Great Works Of Art quotes by Baltasar Gracian
It is not just the Great Works of mankind that make a culture. It is the daily things, like what people eat and how they serve it. ~ Laurie Colwin
Great Works Of Art quotes by Laurie Colwin
Jealousy also forms the theme for many well-known works of literature as well as art. Agnolo Bronzino's 'Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time', painted in 1545, which hangs in the National Gallery in London, shows a nude Venus with Cupid kissing her, his hand on her breast, as Father Time, depicted by an old man, watches on. A dark figure howling in agony just behind them is Jealousy. ~ Preeti Shenoy
Great Works Of Art quotes by Preeti Shenoy
Everyone would like to be on Broadway, cause if a show works, you make a great deal of money and it allows you to write other shows. ~ Stephen Sondheim
Great Works Of Art quotes by Stephen Sondheim
Is there not a certain satisfaction in the fact that natural limits are set to the life of the individual, so that at the conclusion it may appear as a work of art? ~ Albert Einstein
Great Works Of Art quotes by Albert Einstein
The function of criticism is the reeducation of perception of works of art? The conception that its business is to appraise, to judge in the legal and moral sense, arrests the perception of those who are influenced by the criticism that assumes this task. ~ John Dewey
Great Works Of Art quotes by John Dewey
