During the Bosnian war in the late 1990s, I spent several days traveling around the country with Susan Sontag and her son, my dear friend David Rieff. On one occasion, we made a special detour to the town of Zenica, where there was reported to be a serious infiltration of outside Muslim extremists: a charge that was often used to slander the Bosnian government of the time. We found very little evidence of that, but the community itself was much riven as between Muslim, Croat, and Serb. No faction was strong enough to predominate, each was strong enough to veto the other's candidate for the chairmanship of the city council. Eventually, and in a way that was characteristically Bosnian, all three parties called on one of the town's few Jews and asked him to assume the job. We called on him, and found that he was also the resident intellectual, with a natural gift for synthesizing matters. After we left him, Susan began to chortle in the car. 'What do you think?' she asked. 'Do you think that the only dentist and the only shrink in Zenica are Jewish also?' It would be dense to have pretended not to see her joke. ~ Christopher Hitchens
David Rieff quotes by Christopher Hitchens
Hatred always leaves a stain on the veil. But sometimes the hatred isn't your own. Sometimes you're chained, and the hatred beaten into you is another man's, grown in a different heart, and it takes longer than a fading bruise to forget. ~ Gregory David Roberts
David Rieff quotes by Gregory David Roberts
Thought is the wind and knowledge the sail. ~ David Hare
David Rieff quotes by David Hare
Keep the circus going inside you, keep it going, don't take anything too seriously, it'll all work out in the end. ~ David Niven
David Rieff quotes by David Niven
Karate is for life, not points. ~ David Walker
David Rieff quotes by David Walker
Truths physical have an origin as divine as truths religious. ~ David Brewster
David Rieff quotes by David Brewster
Everybody sees a difficulty in the question of relations between Arabs and Jews. But not everybody sees that there is no solution to this question. No solution! There is a gulf, and nothing can bridge it ... We, as a nation, want this country to be ours; the Arabs, as a nation, want this country to be theirs. ~ David Ben-Gurion
David Rieff quotes by David Ben-Gurion
It's not who wants to sleep with you; It's who wants to sleep with you again. ~ David Lee Roth
David Rieff quotes by David Lee Roth
An English comedian once explained the popularity of umlauts among native English speakers as follows: "It's almost as if they had two eyes. You look at the umlaut, and the umlaut looks right back at you! I believe that, because of the umlauts, a close friendship can arise between the reader and the text being read. ~ David Bergmann
David Rieff quotes by David Bergmann
Standing as a witness means many things. It encompasses the way we act, how we speak, and how we dress. When you are considering a young man as a companion, you would do will to follow the advice given some years ago by President David O. McKay: He must never "attempt to take advantage of [you. If] ... he shows [any] inclination to use you as a convenience or as a means of gratification, then you may [be sure] he is not prompted by love." It is very natural for young men and women to be attracted to each other, but they should be attracted in God-given ways rather than questionable ways, such as immodest dress. God-given attractions include your inner beauty, charm, decency, and goodness. ~ James E. Faust
David Rieff quotes by James E. Faust
My point is cutting spending shouldn't be reliant on the debt limit though. It's something we have to do. The good news for America is, leaders in both parties, the president, believe that we have to have significant deficit reduction. So the intent is there. And I think what America is going to demand is that our leaders come together. ~ David Plouffe
David Rieff quotes by David Plouffe
The source of all things, the luminescence, has more forms than heaven's stars, sure. And one good thought is all it takes to make it shine. But a single mistake can burn down a forest in your heart, hiding all the stars, in all the skies. And while a mistake's still burning, ruined love or lost faith can make you think you're done, and you can't go on. But it's not true. It's never true. No matter what you do, no matter where you're lost, the luminescence never leaves you. Any good thing that dies inside can rise again, if you want it hard enough. The heart doesn't know how to quit, because it doesn't know how to lie. You lift your eyes from the page, fall into the smile of a perfect stranger, and the searching starts all over again. It's not what it was, It's always different. It's always something else. But the new forest that grows back in a scarred heart is sometimes wilder and stronger than it was before the fire. And if you stay there, in that shine within yourself, that new place for the light, forgiving everything and never giving up, sooner or later you'll always find yourself right back there where love and beauty made the world: at the beginning. The beginning. The beginning. ~ Gregory David Roberts
David Rieff quotes by Gregory David Roberts
Everyone must believe in something. I believe I'll go canoeing. ~ Henry David Thoreau
David Rieff quotes by Henry David Thoreau
In the Baboon community, it is not how strong you are that is important, but who you know that counts ~ David Attenborough
David Rieff quotes by David Attenborough
I'm different than most people ... when I cross the finish line of a big race, I see that people are ecstatic, but I'm thinking about what I'm going to do tomorrow. It's as If my Journey is everlasting and there is no finish line ~ David Goggins
David Rieff quotes by David Goggins
Buddhist philosophy, notion of mutually dependent origination, everything originates together, mutually dependent. it is close to implicate order, which says that everything comes out of a good and everything is interrelated, and that underlying it there is no substance that can be defined. that also give rise to karma, but karma too becomes changeable since even our own state of mind is part of the whole, and when it changes, the whole changes, so the karma changes. ~ David Bohm
David Rieff quotes by David Bohm
The amount of force and violence necessary to board the train, for example was no less and no more than the amoount of politeness and consideration necessary to ensure that the cramped journey was as pleasant as possible afterwards. What is necessary? That was the unspoken but implied, and unavoidable question everywhere in India. ~ Gregory David Roberts
David Rieff quotes by Gregory David Roberts
Worthy partakers of the sacrament are in harmony with the Lord and put themselves under covenant with Him to always remember His sacrifice for the sins of the world, to take upon them the name of Christ, and to always remember Him, and to keep His commandments. The Savior covenants that we who do so shall have His Spirit to be with us and that, if faithful to the end, we may inherit eternal life. ~ David B. Haight
David Rieff quotes by David B. Haight
The only place where we're going to be completely relieved of pain is in Heaven. ~ David Berg
David Rieff quotes by David Berg
I think one of the highest compliments you can give a person is that when you are talking to him, you are not thinking about the fact that you are talking to him. That is, your thoughts and words all exist on a single, engaged level. You are being yourself because you aren't bothering to think about who you should be. It is like when you talk in a dream. ~ David Levithan
David Rieff quotes by David Levithan
If that had been my last show last night, you'd be talking to the new guy, asking the same questions that I got. ~ David Mandel
David Rieff quotes by David Mandel
What we find is that our brains have colossal things happening in them all the time. ~ David Eagleman
David Rieff quotes by David Eagleman
He called for a remount, and changed horses while I gently swelled with pride. I had never craved officer rank, particularly, but it was something to be rewarded for my efforts, and to know I still basked in the general's favour. ~ David Pilling
David Rieff quotes by David Pilling
The prayer we know as "The Lord's Prayer" came from the Lord Jesus in direct response to His disciples' request: "Lord, teach us to pray." It has always fascinated me that they never asked Jesus to teach them to preach. They never asked Him to teach them to give or to witness. Perhaps, like us, the disciples were often at a loss when it came to communicating with the Almighty. ~ David Jeremiah
David Rieff quotes by David Jeremiah
Literature is man's exploration of man by artificial light, which is better than natural light because we can direct it where we want. ~ David Daiches
David Rieff quotes by David Daiches
Reading and sauntering and lounging and dosing, which I call thinking, is my supreme Happiness. ~ David Hume
David Rieff quotes by David Hume
Martha Stewart is getting out of prison so today the terror alert was raised from orange to pesto. ~ David Letterman
David Rieff quotes by David Letterman
Desire for an idea is like bait. When you're fishing, you have to have patience. You bait your hook, and then you wait. The desire is the bait that pulls those fish in-those ideas. ~ David Lynch
David Rieff quotes by David Lynch
I became a Christian at age 4. I turned from my wicked ways and decided to walk the straight and narrow - but seriously, I actually remember coming to the Lord then and starting my long walk with Him. ~ David A.R. White
David Rieff quotes by David A.R. White
The future of mobile is the future of online. It is how people access online content now. ~ David Murphy
David Rieff quotes by David Murphy
God's love is his holiness reaching out to sinners; grace is but the price that his love pays to his holiness; the cross is but its victory over sin and death; and faith is but the way in which we bring our worship to him who is holy. ~ David F. Wells
David Rieff quotes by David F. Wells
The wonderful purity of nature at this season is a most pleasing fact ... In the bare fields and tinkling woods, see what virtue survives. In the coldest and bleakest places, the warmest charities still maintain a foothold. ~ Henry David Thoreau
David Rieff quotes by Henry David Thoreau
It's always difficult to define what jazz is or what jazz isn't. To me, the only definition that I can think of is it's music where a lot of different elements are played at the same time. The harmonic, the melodic ... You're pushing the boundaries on every level. That could be true of rhythm and blues as well. I'm a musician. ~ David Sanborn
