Benedict Arnold was appointed to the rank of general in the Continental Army by George Washington during the American War of Independence. It was up to him to protect the fortifications at West Point, New York, which in 1802 became the U.S. Military Academy. Arnold however planned to surrender his command to the British forces. When his treasonous act was discovered Arnold fled down the Hudson River to the British sloop-of-war Vulture, avoiding capture by the forces of George Washington, who had previously been alerted to the plot. Arnold was hailed a hero by the British, who gave him a commission in the British Army as brigadier general. In the winter of 1782, after the war, he moved to London with his wife where he was received as a hero by King George III. In the United States his name "Benedict Arnold" became synonyms for the words "TRAITOR & TREASON."
Cohorting with a foreign power to overthrow the government or purposely aiding the enemy is an act of Treason! ~ Hank Bracker
Continental Army quotes by Hank Bracker
With regard to military discipline, I may safely say that no such thing existed in the Continental Army. ~ Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben
Continental Army quotes by Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben
So, the moral of that story, other than never underestimate an independent bookseller, was that the Continental Army and its commander in chief had a soft spot for Chief Artillery Officer Henry Knox. ~ Sarah Vowell
Continental Army quotes by Sarah Vowell
That there would be a political advantage in having the declaration written by a Virginian was clear, for the same reason there had been political advantage in having the Virginian Washington in command of the army. But be that as it may, Jefferson, with his "peculiar felicity of expression," as Adams said, was the best choice for the task, just as Washington had been the best choice to command the Continental Army, and again Adams had played a key part. Had his contributions as a member of Congress been only that of casting the two Virginians in their respective, fateful roles, his service to the American cause would have been very great. ~ David McCullough
Continental Army quotes by David McCullough
That Steuben, who needed a translator, what with his English vocabulary consisting almost entirely of swear words, ended up being the perfect hire to upgrade the Continental Army should rattle every search committee, small-business owner, casting director, college admissions officer, headhunter, and voter. ~ Sarah Vowell
Continental Army quotes by Sarah Vowell
It turns out one of my ancestors fought in the Continental Army, so I was inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution. ~ Henry Louis Gates
Continental Army quotes by Henry Louis Gates
The Continental army got more generals than they got private soldiers, these days. An officer lives through more 'n two battles, they make him some kind of general on the spot. Now, gettin' any pay for it, that's a different kettle of fish. ~ Diana Gabaldon
Continental Army quotes by Diana Gabaldon
But let us not forget, too, that it was John Adams who nominated George Washington to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. It was John Adams who insisted that Jefferson be the one to write the Declaration of Independence. And it was President John Adams who made John Marshall chief justice of the Supreme Court. As a casting director alone, he was brilliant. Abigail ~ David McCullough
Continental Army quotes by David McCullough
The strategic center of the rebellion was not a place – not New York, Philadelphia, not the Hudson corridor – but the Continental Army itself. ~ Joseph J. Ellis
Continental Army quotes by Joseph J. Ellis
His (Washington's) apparent paralysis was the result of balancing two imperatives: his reputation against the survival of the Continental Army. ~ Joseph J. Ellis
Continental Army quotes by Joseph J. Ellis
Let's all go over there. She could have an army of psycho girl ninjas hiding in that shack of hers. ~ James Dashner
Continental Army quotes by James Dashner
All the living hold together, and all yield to the same tremendous push. The animal takes its stand on the plant, man bestrides animality, and the whole of humanity, in space and in time, is one immense army galloping beside and before and behind each of us in an overwhelming charge able to beat down every resistance and clear the most formidable obstacles, perhaps even death. ~ Henri Bergson
Continental Army quotes by Henri Bergson
A great number of soundings, mainly along the continental slope of the New England States were also taken by the vessels of the United States Fish Commission. Important soundings were made by the United States Fish Commission steamer ALBATROSS in the Caribbean, during the winter of 1883-1884. ~ Alexander Agassiz
Continental Army quotes by Alexander Agassiz
I saw a film today, oh boy,
The English army had just won the war,
A crowd of people turned away,
But I just had to look, having read the book ... ~ The Beatles
Continental Army quotes by The Beatles
The Lybian army is capable of destroying America and breaking its nose. ~ Muammar Al-Gaddafi
Continental Army quotes by Muammar Al-Gaddafi
I myself have seen the floating ships
And nothing will ever be the same
The shouts,
The harrowing voices within the house.
I stand apart with an army:
My mind is graven with ships. ~ Hilda Doolittle
Continental Army quotes by Hilda Doolittle
Some visualize the Pistols era in shades of black and white. It wasn't. Actually, the colors I envision are neon or army dirt green with fluorescent pink
anything that would annoy. ~ John Lydon
Continental Army quotes by John Lydon
Those far distant, storm-beaten ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and the dominion of the world. ~ Alfred Thayer Mahan
Continental Army quotes by Alfred Thayer Mahan
Too many kings can ruin an army ~ Homer
Continental Army quotes by Homer
Seeing your name on the list for KP or guard duty when you're in the Army is like reading a bad review. ~ Robert Duvall
Continental Army quotes by Robert Duvall
EVERYONE JOINS A BAND IN THIS LIFE. You are born into your first one. Your mother plays the lead. She shares the stage with your father and siblings. Or perhaps your father is absent, an empty stool under a spotlight. But he is still a founding member, and if he surfaces one day, you will have to make room for him. As life goes on, you will join other bands, some through friendship, some through romance, some through neighborhoods, school, an army. Maybe you will all dress the same, or laugh at your own private vocabulary. Maybe you will flop on couches backstage, or share a boardroom table, or crowd around a galley inside a ship. But in each band you join, you will play a distinct part, and it will affect you as much as you affect it. And, as is usually the fate with bands, most of them will break up - through distance, differences, divorce, or death. ~ Mitch Albom
Continental Army quotes by Mitch Albom
Feathers, and a shield and a lance and a sword. His armor and his weapons were all, I am almost sure, of quite different periods. The shield was thirteenth century, while the sword was of the pattern used in the Peninsular War. The cuirass was of the time of Charles I., and the helmet dated from the Second Crusade. The arms on the shield were very grand - three red running lions on a blue ground. The tents were of the latest brand approved of by our modern War Office, and the whole appearance of camp, army, and leader might have been a shock to some. But Robert was dumb with admiration, and it all seemed to him perfectly correct, because he knew no more of heraldry or archaeology than the gifted artists who usually drew the pictures for the historical romances. The scene was indeed "exactly like a picture." He admired ~ E. Nesbit
Continental Army quotes by E. Nesbit
You can't talk about defeating insurgencies in the same way that you can with a conventional army. ~ Des Browne
Continental Army quotes by Des Browne
The belief that complex systems require armies of designers and programmers is wrong. A system that is not understood in its entirety, or at least to a significant degree of detail by a single individual, should probably not be built. ~ Niklaus Wirth
Continental Army quotes by Niklaus Wirth
I went into the army worth a million and a half dollars, and came out a beggar. ~ Nathan Bedford Forrest
Continental Army quotes by Nathan Bedford Forrest
My vocation is more in composition really than anything else - building up harmonies using the guitar, orchestrating the guitar like an army, a guitar army. ~ Jimmy Page
Continental Army quotes by Jimmy Page
Now what do you get in the Army? Bad helmets and Basra. Your guns don't work and everyone hates you when you come back. ~ Rupert Everett
Continental Army quotes by Rupert Everett
Is it not the same virtue which does everything for us here in England? Do you imagine, then, that it is the Land Tax Act which raises your revenue? that it is the annual vote in the Committee of Supply which gives you your army? or that it is the Mutiny Bill which inspires it with bravery and discipline? No! surely no! It is the love of the people; it is their attachment to their government, from the sense of the deep stake they have in such a glorious institution, which gives you your army and your navy, and infuses into both that liberal obedience without which your army would be a base rabble, and your navy nothing but rotten timber.
All this, I know well enough, will sound wild and chimerical to the profane herd of those vulgar and mechanical politicians who have no place among us; a sort of people who think that nothing exists but what is gross and material, and who, therefore, far from being qualified to be directors of the great movement of empire, are not fit to turn a wheel in the machine. But to men truly initiated and rightly taught, these ruling and master principles which, in the opinion of such men as I have mentioned, have no substantial existence, are in truth everything, and all in all. Magnanimity in politics is not seldom the truest wisdom; and a great empire and little minds go ill together. ~ Edmund Burke
Continental Army quotes by Edmund Burke
Vietnam remains an underdeveloped economy with a high poverty incidence, ... party, people and army will continue to stand united and ... turn Vietnam into a developed country in the coming decades. ~ Tran Duc Luong
Continental Army quotes by Tran Duc Luong
Business, especially big business, is now organized like an army. It is, as some would say, a sort of mild militarism without bloodshed; as I say, a militarism without the military virtues. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
Continental Army quotes by Gilbert K. Chesterton
Bram stared into a pair of wide, dark eyes. Eyes that reflected a surprising glimmer of intelligence. This might be the rare female a man could reason with.
"Now, then," he said. "We can do this the easy way, or we can make things difficult."
With a soft snort, she turned her head. It was as if he'd ceased to exist.
Bram shifted his weight to his good leg, feeling the stab to his pride. He was a lieutenant colonel in the British army, and at over six feet tall, he was said to cut an imposing figure. Typically, a pointed glance from his quarter would quell the slightest hint of disobedience. He was not accustomed to being ignored.
"Listen sharp, now." He gave her ear a rough tweak and sank his voice to a low threat. "If you know what's good for you, you'll do as I say."
Though she spoke not a word, her reply was clear: You can kiss my great wolly arse.
Confounded sheep. ~ Tessa Dare
Continental Army quotes by Tessa Dare
To the horror of those who can genuinely claim to have suffered from its effects, alienation has proved a highly profitable commodity in the cultural marketplace. Modernist art with its dissonances and torments, to take one example, has become the staple diet of an increasingly voracious army of culture consumers who know good investments when they see them. The avant-garde, if indeed the term can still be used, has become an honored ornament of our cultural life, less to be feared than feted. The philosophy of existentialism, to cite another case, which scarcely a generation ago seemed like a breath of fresh air, has now degenerated into a set of easily manipulated clichés and sadly hollow gestures. This decline occurred, it should be noted, not because analytic philosophers exposed the meaninglessness of its categories, but rather as a result of our culture's uncanny ability to absorb and defuse even its most uncompromising opponents. ~ Martin Jay
Continental Army quotes by Martin Jay
Continental people have a sex life; the English have hot-water bottles. ~ George Mikes
Continental Army quotes by George Mikes
Harriet Tubman was a spy for the United States of America Union Army during the Civil War. 9. ~ Stephen R. Daily
Continental Army quotes by Stephen R. Daily
By the end of the Twentieth Century, taxation will be reduced to a minimum, the entire world will be open to trade, and there will be no need of a standing army. ~ Erastus Wiman
Continental Army quotes by Erastus Wiman
For years, the feminists thought of me as an army sergeant. I was too macho for them. ~ Lina Wertmuller
Continental Army quotes by Lina Wertmuller
In my proper character, I am an officer of the United States Army. ~ Zebulon Pike
Continental Army quotes by Zebulon Pike
For when man is faced with a curse he answers, "I'll take care of my problems." And he puts everything to work to become powerful, to keep the curse from having its effects. He creates the arts and the sciences, he raises an army, he constructs chariots, he builds cities. The spirit of might is a response to the divine curse. ~ Jacques Ellul
Continental Army quotes by Jacques Ellul
My father was an army champion boxer ... in the British army. And so he loved boxing and talked it up as a sport. But then when my brother and I were beating the crap out of each other, he was always trying to tone it down. But I am a fan of boxing. ~ Hugh Jackman
Continental Army quotes by Hugh Jackman
It is a funny thing. A man can make a promise to his God, break it five minutes later and never think about it. With an idle shrug of his shoulders, a man can break solemn promises to his mother, wife or sweetheart, and, except for a slight momentary twinge of conscience, he still won't be bothered very much. But if a man ever breaks a promise to himself he disintegrates. His entire personality and character crumble into tiny pieces, and he is never the same man again.
I remember very well a sergeant I knew in the army. Before a group of five men he swore off smoking forever. An hour later he sheepishly lit a cigarette and broke his vow to the five of us and to himself. He was never quite the same man again, not to me, and not to himself. ~ Charles Willeford
Continental Army quotes by Charles Willeford
In 302, the Roman emperor Diocletian commanded "there should be cheapness," declaring, "Unprincipled greed appears wherever our armies ... march ... Our law shall fix a measure and a limit to this greed." The predictable result of Diocletian's food price controls were black markets, hunger and food confiscation by his soldiers. Despite the disastrous history of price controls, politicians never manage to resist tampering with prices
that's not a flattering observation of their learning abilities. ~ Walter E. Williams
Continental Army quotes by Walter E. Williams
You are going to bring an army against the ruler of hell and put him down once and for all. And he is doing everything in his power to stop you."
Oh, yeah, Garrett needed to be on medication. "But why would I want to do all of this? And how would I raise an army? I'm just not that good at organisation. Will they expect to be fed? ~ Darynda Jones
Continental Army quotes by Darynda Jones
It is not an army that we must train for war; it is a nation. ~ Woodrow Wilson
Continental Army quotes by Woodrow Wilson
Moreover, competition for foreign markets and the necessity for
larger and larger investments in raw materials, produce phenomena of concentration and accumulation.
First, small capitalists are absorbed by big capitalists who can maintain, for example, unprofitable prices
for a longer period. A larger and larger part of the profits is finally invested in new machines and
accumulated in the fixed assets of capital. This double movement first of all hastens the ruin of the middle
classes, who are absorbed into the proletariat, and then proceeds to concentrate, in an increasingly small
number of hands, the riches produced uniquely by the proletariat. Thus the proletariat increases in size in
proportion to its increasing ruin. Capital is now concentrated in the hands of only a very few masters,
whose growing power is based on robbery. Moreover, these masters are shaken to their foundations by
successive crises, overwhelmed by the contradictions of the system, and can no longer assure even mere
subsistence to their slaves, who then come to depend on private or public charity. A day comes,
inevitably, when a huge army of oppressed slaves find themselves face to face with a handful of
despicable masters. That day is the day of revolution. "The ruin of the bourgeoisie and the victory of the
proletariat are equally inevitable. ~ Albert Camus
Continental Army quotes by Albert Camus
My men can eat their belts, but my tanks have gotta have gas. ~ George S. Patton
Continental Army quotes by George S. Patton
from the late Joe Aldrich: "Only wounded soldiers can serve in God's army. ~ Terry Powell
Continental Army quotes by Terry Powell
This manual of the Communist Party should be in the hands of every loyal American, that they may be alerted to the fact that it is not always by armies and guns that a nation is conquered. ~ Kenneth Goff
Continental Army quotes by Kenneth Goff
The withdrawal of more than half a million Russian troops and dependents from Germany since 1991 is described by historians as 'the biggest pullout ever by an army not defeated in battle.' ~ Stephen Kinzer
Continental Army quotes by Stephen Kinzer
If Kris could play enough of these, in the right order, without stopping, she could block out everything: the dirty snow that never melted, closets full of secondhand clothes, overheated classrooms at Independence High, mind-numbing lectures about the Continental Congress and ladylike behavior and the dangers of of running with the wrong crowd and what x equals and how to find for y and what the third person plural for cantar is and what Holden Caulfield's basement glove symbolizes and what the whale symbolizes and what the green light symbolizes and what everything in the world symbolizes, because apparently nothing is what it seems and everything is a trick. ~ Grady Hendrix
Continental Army quotes by Grady Hendrix
The war was not won by any single individual, be it Abraham Lincoln or Ulysses S. Grant. The Union, as a whole, triumphed. The national army, fielding over two million men in toto, led by legions of staff, company, field, and general officers; a correspondingly potent navy; and a far more powerful economy than its adversary were all needed to ultimately subdue the Confederacy. ~ Joseph A. Rose
Continental Army quotes by Joseph A. Rose
I'm going to imagine that converstion now. 'Hi, Mom, it's me. I ran away to Paris with a stranger I met under a bridge. He's really old, too, like twenty-five or something, and a soldier, so I helped him desert from his army, and, oh, did I mention he's a Communist' ... ~ Rosanne Parry
Continental Army quotes by Rosanne Parry
Being unconquerable lies with yourself; being conquerable lies with your enemy. ~ Sun Tzu
Continental Army quotes by Sun Tzu
I am a Christian, but my time in Iraq has convinced me that God doesn't want to hear from me anymore. I've done things that He can never forgive. I've done them consciously. I've made decisions I must live with for years to come. I am not a victim. In each instance, I heard my conscience call for restraint, I told it to shut the fuck up and let me handle my business. All the sins I've committed, I've done with one objective: to keep my men alive. ~ David Bellavia
Continental Army quotes by David Bellavia
There are no fans more rabid or devoted than KISS fans. KISS fans are what all other fans are measured against. That's how it came to be known as the KISS Army. ~ Paul Stanley
Continental Army quotes by Paul Stanley
Every country in the world has its own security system and its own security forces, its own police and its own army. ~ Osama Bin Laden
Continental Army quotes by Osama Bin Laden
The end of the war was like the beginning, with the army marching down the open road under the spring sky, seeing a far light on the horizon. Many lights had died in the windy dark but far down the road there was always a gleam, and it was as if a legend had been created to express some obscure truth that could not otherwise be stated. Everything had changed, the war and the men and the land they fought for, but the road ahead had not changed. It went on through the trees and past the little towns and over the hills, and there was no getting to the end of it. The goal was a going-towards rather than an arriving, and from the top of the next rise there was always a new vista. The march toward it led through wonder and terror and deep shadows, and the sunlight touched the flags at the head of the column. ~ Bruce Catton
Continental Army quotes by Bruce Catton
