Cinco de Mayo is an important day. The Mexicans had to defend themselves from the French. It is historically significant, but it is not Mexican Independence Day. ~ Kuno Becker
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Kuno Becker
Happy Cinco de Mayo. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, mayor Bill de Blasio is filling all New York City potholes with guacamole. ~ David Letterman
Cinco De Mayo quotes by David Letterman
Hillary Clinton made a campaign stop in Las Vegas yesterday. She said she wants citizenship for undocumented immigrants. But after seeing Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo yesterday, immigrants said, 'You know what, we're good. We're gonna head back now. We had enough.' ~ Jimmy Fallon
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Jimmy Fallon
Even if there is no connection between diversity and international influence, some people would argue that immigration brings cultural enrichment. This may seem to be an attractive argument, but the culture of Americans remains almost completely untouched by millions of Hispanic and Asian immigrants. They may have heard of Cinco de Mayo or Chinese New Year, but unless they have lived abroad or have studied foreign affairs, the white inhabitants of Los Angeles are likely to have only the most superficial knowledge of Mexico or China despite the presence of many foreigners.
Nor is it immigrants who introduce us to Cervantes, Puccini, Alexander Dumas, or Octavio Paz. Real high culture crosses borders by itself, not in the back pockets of tomato pickers, refugees, or even the most accomplished immigrants. What has Yo-Yo Ma taught Americans about China? What have we learned from Seiji Ozawa or Ichiro about Japan? Immigration and the transmission of culture are hardly the same thing. Nearly every good-sized American city has an opera company, but that does not require Italian immigrants.
Miami is now nearly 70 percent Hispanic, but what, in the way of authentic culture enrichment, has this brought the city? Are the art galleries, concerts, museums, and literature of Los Angeles improved by diversity? Has the culture of Detroit benefited from a majority-black population? If immigration and diversity bring cultural enrichment, why do whites move out of those very parts of t ~ Jared Taylor
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Jared Taylor
[L]et us imagine a mirror image of what is happening today. What if millions of white Americans were pouring across the border into Mexico, taking over parts of cities, speaking English rather than Spanish, celebrating the Fourth of July rather than Cinco de Mayo, sleeping 20 to a house, demanding bilingual instruction and welfare for immigrants, opposing border control, and demanding ballots in English? What if, besides this, they had high rates of crime, poverty, and illegitimacy? Can we imagine the Mexicans rejoicing in their newfound diversity?
And yet, that is what Americans are asked to do. For whites to celebrate diversity is to celebrate their own declining numbers and influence, and the transformation of their society. For every other group, to celebrate diversity is to celebrate increasing numbers and influence. Which is a real celebration and which is self-deception?
Whites - but only whites - must never take pride in their own people. Only whites must pretend they do not prefer to associate with people like themselves. Only whites must pretend to be happy to give up their neighborhoods, their institutions, and their country to people unlike themselves. Only whites must always act as individuals and never as members of a group that promotes shared interests.
Racial identity comes naturally to all non-white groups. It comes naturally because it is good, normal, and healthy to feel kinship for people like oneself. Despite the fashionable view that race ~ Jared Taylor
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Jared Taylor
I had to learn quick, because I was performing in Cinco de Mayo festivals with babies crying and people lifting their beers, and you know the feather dancers would come, and they'd say, "What are you, a poet? You're next". ~ Sandra Cisneros
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Sandra Cisneros
Happy Cinco de Mayo. If you don't know what that means, maybe you're a little out of touch - or maybe you're the governor of Arizona. ~ Craig Ferguson
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Craig Ferguson
Now, just to understand better what's going on, let's imagine the shoe on the other foot. Let's imagine that hundreds of thousands of badly-educated Americans, white Americans, were pouring across the boarder into Mexico. And let's imagine that they were insisting on instruction in school in English rather than Spanish. Let's imagine they were asking for ballot papers in English rather than Spanish, they were celebrating Fourth of July rather than Sinco de Mayo, buying up newspapers, publishing in English, television stations, radios, all publishing and broadcasting in English ,and that there were so many of them coming in that they threatened to reduce Mexicans to minority. Do you think the Mexicans could possibly be tricked into thinking that this was enrichment, this was diversity, that this was great? No. No. They wouldn't stand for it for a moment. This would be to them an impossible unacceptable invasion of their country. And you would find the same reaction in any non-white country anywhere in the world. Can you imagine say, the Japanese or the Nigerians, the Pakistanis, the Costa Ricans accepting this kind of wholesale demographic change that would change their country, transform their country, and reduce them to a minority? No. These things are impossible to imagine. ~ Jared Taylor
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Jared Taylor
The only thing that should surprise us is that there are still some things that can surprise us. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Yes, I am influenced by everbody. But every time I put my hands in my pockets I find someone else's fingers there. ~ Willem De Kooning
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Willem De Kooning
Social media has lots of benefits, but compared to Christianity, it tends to group people by interests. Religion puts you with people who have nothing in common except that you're human. ~ Alain De Botton
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Alain De Botton
I turned to leave, then whirled around and flung my arms around Philippe's massive shoulders. How could such a man ever be broken? "What is it?" Philippe murmured, taken aback. "You will not be alone either, Philippe de Clermont," I whispered fiercely. "I'll find a way to be with you in the darkness, I promise. And when you think the whole world has abandoned you, I'll be there, holding your hand." "How could it be otherwise," Philippe said gently, "when you are in my heart? ~ Deborah Harkness
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Deborah Harkness
Only the fools are certain and assured. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Michel De Montaigne
The only good histories are those written by those who had command in the events they describe. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Michel De Montaigne
No state can remain indifferent to another state's wresting from its people more of their rights. It must make a corresponding draft on its own people's rights, or else pay dearly for its neglect to put itself on a level ...
A Power which interferes with its people only in certain respects cannot increase its warlike potential beyond certain limits. To pass them, it must revolutionize those respects and give itself fresh prerogatives. ~ Bertrand De Jouvenel
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Bertrand De Jouvenel
We cannot choose one desktop over the other - Gnome or KDE - because there's users for both code bases. ~ Miguel De Icaza
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Miguel De Icaza
The blindness of men is the most dangerous effect of their pride; it seems to nourish and augment it; it deprives them of knowledge of remedies which can solace their miseries and can cure their faults. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
We talked and talked and talked. Maybe love comes in at the eyes, but not nearly as much as it comes in at the ears, at least in my experience. As we talked, lights flicked on inside my head; by the end of the night I was a planterium. ~ Marisa De Los Santos
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Marisa De Los Santos
The night was waiting for me as always. And my thirst could wait no longer. I stood for a moment, head thrown back, eyes closed, and mouth open, feeling that thirst, and wanting to roar like a hungry beast. Yes, blood again when there is nothing else. When the world seems in all its beauty to be empty and heartless and I myself am utterly lost. Give me my old friend, death, and the blood that rushes with it. The Vampire Lestat is here, and he thirsts, and tonight of all nights, he will not be denied. ~ Anne Rice
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Anne Rice
'Without the help of mathematics,' the wise man continued, 'the art could not advance and all the sciences would perish.' ~ Julio Cesar De Mello E Souza
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Julio Cesar De Mello E Souza
There was dusting and sweeping to do, books to be put away. Lovely books. It didn't matter to Dick if they were serious leather-bound tomes or paperbacks with garish covers. He loved them all, for they were filled with words, and words were magic to this hob. Wise and clever humans had used some marvelous spell to imbue each book with every kind of story and character you could imagine, and many you couldn't. If you knew the key to unlock the words, you could experience them all - Pixel Pixies ~ Charles De Lint
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Charles De Lint
What annoyances are more painful than those of which we cannot complain? ~ Marquis De Custine
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Marquis De Custine
Friendship is the highest degree of perfection in society. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Michel De Montaigne
Everyone, no doubt, remains first and foremost a man of his own country and continues to draw from it his motive force. ~ Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
Let us suppose that I have wept, on account of some incident of which the other has not even become aware (to weep is part of the normal activity of the amorous body), and that, so this cannot be seen, I put on dark glasses to mask my swollen eyes (a fine example of denial: to darken the sight in order not to be seen). The intention of this gesture is a calculated one: I want to keep the moral advantage of stoicism, of "dignity" (I take myself for Clotilde de Vaux), and at the same time, contradictorily, I want to provoke the tender question ("But what's the matter with you?"); I want to be both pathetic and admirable, I want to be at the same time a child and an adult. Thereby I gamble, I take a risk: for it is always possible that the other will simply ask no question whatever about these unaccustomed glasses; that the other will see, in the fact, no sign. ~ Roland Barthes
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Roland Barthes
I have heard it said that one loses a woman by loving her too much, that an affectation of coldness, from time to time, brings better results. And so on. I shall play no such tricks with you … Let love be truly love - that is, let it be peace - or let it not exist at all. ~ Henry De Montherlant
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Henry De Montherlant
In love deceit nearly always goes further than mistrust. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
In nations where it exists, every individual takes an equal share in sovereign power and participates equally in the government of the state. Thus he is considered as enlightened, virtuous, strong as any of his fellow men. Why then does he obey society and what are the normal limits of his obedience? He obeys not because he holds an inferior position to those who run the administration or is less capable than his neighbor of self-government but because he recognizes the usefulness of his association with his fellow men and because he knows that this association cannot exist without a regulating power. While he has become a subject in all the mutual duties of citizens, he remains master in his own affairs where he is free and answerable only to God and his action. Out of that grows the general truth that the individual is the sole and best placed judge of his own private concerns and society has the right to control his actions only when it feels such actions cause it damage or needs to seek the cooperation of the individual. ~ Alexis De Tocqueville
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Alexis De Tocqueville
If our Gods and our hopes are nothing but scientific phenomena, then let us admit it must be said that our love is scientific as well. ~ Auguste De Villiers De L'Isle-Adam
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Auguste De Villiers De L'Isle-Adam
Everyone's always interested in a dark theme, especially when there's humor connected to it. It seems like that helps, if that's an integral and organic part of the whole story. ~ Robert De Niro
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Robert De Niro
Silence is the ultimate weapon of power. ~ Charles De Gaulle
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Charles De Gaulle
There is no one more likely to destroy us than the person we marry. ~ Alain De Botton
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Alain De Botton
A king's crumb is worth more than a lord's loaf." 'This ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
You soothe my soul. You fill it with so tender a sentiment that it is sweet to live during the time that I see you. ~ Jeanne Julie Eleonore De Lespinasse
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Jeanne Julie Eleonore De Lespinasse
Philosophers have very justly remarked that the only solid instruction is that which the pupil brings from his own depths; that the true instruction is not that which transmits notions wholly formed, but that which renders him capable of forming for himself good opinions. That which they have said in regard to the intellectual faculties applies equally to the moral faculties. There is for the soul a spontaneous culture, on which depends all the real progress in perfection. ~ Joseph Marie, Baron De Gerando
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Joseph Marie, Baron De Gerando
To administer is to govern: to govern is to reign. That is the essence of the problem. ~ Honore Gabriel Riqueti, Comte De Mirabeau
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Honore Gabriel Riqueti, Comte De Mirabeau
I resemble the father I once hated. ~ Niki De St. Phalle
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Niki De St. Phalle
[Takashi] Murakami, do you think he is spiritual? He is more like de-spiritualized. De-spiritualized might be the most contemporary aspect of the human mind. ~ Hiroshi Sugimoto
Cinco De Mayo quotes by Hiroshi Sugimoto
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason. ~ Eca De Queiros
