You need some help, Rosie?"
His footsteps quicken behind me, and before I can respond, I feel his calloused hands on my waist. I accidently slide back against his chest and inhale the scent that has always clung to his whole family - something like forests, damp leaves, and sunshine. I suppose when your father is a woodsman you're bound to carry the scent of oak in your veins. One breath is all I get the chance for, though; he kicks the door open and sets me down on the front stoop, then takes a step back. I turn to face him, hoping to thank him for the help and in the same sentence admonish him for carrying me like a little girl.
Instead, I smile. He's still Silas - Silas who left a year ago, the boy just a little older than my sister. His eyes are still sparkling and expressive, hair still the brown-black color of pine bark, body broad-shouldered and a little too willowy for his features. He's still there, but it's as if someone new has been layered on top of him. Someone older and stronger who isn't looking a me as if I'm Scarlett's kid sister . . . someone who makes me feel dizzy and quivery. How did this happen?
Calm down. It's just Silas. Sort of.
"You're staring," he says cautiously, looking worried.
"Oh. Um, sorry," I say, shaking my head. Silas shoves his hands into his pockets with a familiar sway. "It's just been a while, that's all."
"Yeah, no kidding. You're heavier than I remember."
I frown, mortified.
"Oh, no, wait. I di ~ Jackson Pearce
Black Color quotes by Jackson Pearce
I've been 40 years discovering that the queen of all colors was black. ~ Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Black Color quotes by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
All these many-coloured feelings fell... like light on a black surface, producing no change, meeting no return. ~ Catharine Maria Sedgwick
Black Color quotes by Catharine Maria Sedgwick
If you force me to pick one color, it'd be Black ... It covers up the things inside of me that I don't want to be known. Well, for the same reason, black is the color I hate, too ... ~ Gosho Aoyama
Black Color quotes by Gosho Aoyama
There's something about black. You feel hidden away in it. ~ Georgia O'Keeffe
Black Color quotes by Georgia O'Keeffe
She wore black, the color of nuns and witches, the color of the loneliest corners of outer space, where gravity prevents all light from escaping, the name given to boxes tucked into airplanes, the ones that explain the disaster. ~ Lili Wright
Black Color quotes by Lili Wright
Without black, no color has any depth. But if you mix black with everything, suddenly there's shadow - no, not just shadow, but fullness. You've got to be willing to mix black into your palette if you want to create something that's real. ~ Amy Grant
Black Color quotes by Amy Grant
You can have any color you want, as long as it's black ~ Henry Ford
Black Color quotes by Henry Ford
The eyes of someone you kill are immortal, if they face you at the fatal instant. They have a terrible black color. They shake you more than the streams of blood and the death rattles, even in a great turmoil of dying. The eyes of the killed, for the killer, are his calamity if he looks into them. They are the blame of the person he kills. ~ Francine Prose
Black Color quotes by Francine Prose
The colour of fear is never dark or black; it has the colour of thunderbolt; usually white, but can appear in different hues depending on how the fear travels through to get inside your heart ~ Munia Khan
Black Color quotes by Munia Khan
You can get it in any color, as long as it is black ~ Henry Ford
Black Color quotes by Henry Ford
Don't you dare come into my world and tell me what color the ocean is! It's black. Black as midnight. Black and awful! ~ Nadia Scrieva
Black Color quotes by Nadia Scrieva
Color is the overpowering of black; white – the final victory over black. ~ Dejan Stojanovic
Black Color quotes by Dejan Stojanovic
Black is my favorite color. It's limitless. It's indefinable. It keeps you guessing. When there's nothing to see, you're forced to imagine. It makes every shape, every person more mysterious because you can't see all the details. ~ Katie Kacvinsky
Black Color quotes by Katie Kacvinsky
A typical native New Yorker, I'm prone to wearing the city's unofficial sartorial color: black. ~ Amanda Hearst
Black Color quotes by Amanda Hearst
If you don't know what color to take, take black ... ~ Pablo Picasso
Black Color quotes by Pablo Picasso
America rejects bigotry. We reject every act of hatred against people of Arab background or Muslim faith America values and welcomes peaceful people of all faiths - Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and many others. Every faith is practiced and protected here, because we are one country. Every immigrant can be fully and equally American because we're one country. Race and color should not divide us, because America is one country. ~ George W. Bush
Black Color quotes by George W. Bush
And I know that there are black boys and black girls out there lost in a Bermuda triangle of the mind or stranded in the doldrums of America, some of them treading and some of them drowning, never feeling and never forgetting. The most precious thing I had then is the most precious thing I have now - my own curiosity. That is the thing I knew, even in the classroom, they could not take from me. That is the thing that buoyed me and eventually plucked me from the sea. ~ Ta-Nehisi Coates
Black Color quotes by Ta-Nehisi Coates
No tyranny is more cruel than the one practised in the shadow of the laws and under color of justice - when, so to speak, one proceeds to drown the unfortunate on the very plank by which they had saved themselves. And since a tyrant never lacks instruments for his tyranny, Tiberius always found judges ready to condemn as many people as he might suspect. ~ Baron De Montesquieu
Black Color quotes by Baron De Montesquieu
You see, I had been riding with the storm clouds, and had come to earth as rain, and it was drought that I had killed with the power that the Six Grandfathers gave me. ~ Black Elk
Black Color quotes by Black Elk
Sweet exists by convention, bitter by convention, color by convention; but in reality atoms and the void alone exist ~ Democritus
Black Color quotes by Democritus
With his buzz-cut black hair, muscles and menagerie of tattoos, the man looked like he lived in a cave and sanded timber with his head and flung innocent young women down on beds and had his wicked way with them. ~ Cari Silverwood
Black Color quotes by Cari Silverwood
Esse est percipi, to be is to be perceived, said good old Berkeley; but, according to most philosophers, he was wrong. Yet, obviously, there are things for which the adage holds. Perception, trivially, to begin with. If elements of conscious awareness
pains, tickles, feelings of heat and cold, sensory qualia of colors, sounds, and the like
have any existence, it must consist in their being perceived by a subject ... This shows, of course, that such experiences are epiphenomenal, at least with respect to the physical world. ~ Zeno Vendler
Black Color quotes by Zeno Vendler
And when I'd realised that I'd been wrong, ridiculously, embarrassingly, shamingly wrong... quite quickly the world went from colour to black and white and the magic seemed to drain away and the only thing left for me to do was gather up my personal pride and try to look like the hope I'd had never existed. I acted as if I wan't destroyed of defeated. I acted as if I didn't care. ~ Sarah Moore Fitzgerald
Black Color quotes by Sarah Moore Fitzgerald
A bear! A bear! All black and brown and covered in hair! ~ George R R Martin
Black Color quotes by George R R Martin
But you, oh gardener, poet that you be / Though unaware, now use your seeds like words / And make them lilt with color nicely flung ... ~ Vita Sackville-West
Black Color quotes by Vita Sackville-West
I went into my own black-out period which lasted two or three years where the canvases would simply build up until they'd get like stone and it was always just a gray mess. The image wouldn't emerge, but I worked pretty regularly. I was fighting to find I knew not what, but I could no longer stay with what I had. ~ Lee Krasner
Black Color quotes by Lee Krasner
There were cushioned benches on either side of the fire, and directly before it a great carved chair. Shevraeth rose from one of the benches, making a gesture of welcome. Indicating the chair, in which sat a straight-backed old man dressed in black velvet, he said, "Father, I have the honor of introducing Lady Meliara Astiar." And to me, in the suavest voice, as if I hadn't flung a candleholder at his head just a little while before, "Lady Meliara, my father, Prince Alaerec."
The old man nodded slowly and with great dignity. He had keen dark eyes, and white hair which he wore loose on his shoulders in the old-fashioned way. "My dear, please forgive me if I do not rise. I am afraid I do not get about with ease or grace anymore."
I felt an impulse to bow, and squashed it. I remembered that Court women sweep curtsys--something my mother had tried once to teach me, when I was six. I also remembered that I was there against my will--a prisoner, despite all the fine surroundings and polite talk--so I just crossed my arms and said, "Don't think you have to walk about on my behalf."
Bran gave me a slightly bemused look and bobbed an awkward bow to the old man.
A servant came forward, silent and skillful, and passed out goblets of wine. The Prince saluted me in silence, followed by Bran and Shevraeth. I looked down at my goblet, then took a big gulp that made my nose sting. ~ Sherwood Smith
Black Color quotes by Sherwood Smith
Had to be here to understand, he had said. He'd meant here in Chicago; but he could also have meant here in my shoes, an older black man who still burns from a lifetime of insults, of foiled ambitions, of ambitions abandoned before they've been tried. I asked myself if I could truly understand that. I assumed, took for granted, that I could. Seeing me, these men had made the same assumption. ~ Barack Obama
Black Color quotes by Barack Obama
This may be the time to address a problem that afflicts even experienced researchers and at some point will probably afflict you. As you shuffle through hundreds of notes and a dozen lines of thought, you start feeling that you're not just spinning your wheels but spiraling down into a black hole of confusion, paralyzed by what seems to be an increasingly complex and ultimately unmanageable task. The bad news is that there's no sure way to avoid such moments. The good news is that most of us have them and they usually pass. Yours will too if you keep moving along, following your plan, taking on small and manageable tasks instead of trying to confront the complexity of the whole project. It's another reason to start early, to break a big project into its smallest steps, and to set achievable deadlines, ~ Kate L. Turabian
Black Color quotes by Kate L. Turabian
How big are souls anyway? asked Coraline.
The other mother sat down at the kitchen table and leaned against the back wall, saying nothing. She picked at her teeth with a long crimson-varnished fingernail, then she tapped the finger, gently, tap-tap-tap against the polished black surface of her black button eyes. ~ Neil Gaiman
Black Color quotes by Neil Gaiman
As they walked out of the store, Ifemelu said, "I was waiting for her to ask 'Was it the one with two eyes or the one with two legs?' Why didn't she just ask 'Was it the black girl or the white girl?'"
Ginika laughed. "Because this is America. You're supposed to pretend that you don't notice certain things. ~ Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Black Color quotes by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Nobody understood what it was like to be black and Jewish ... being different from everyone else just made me a lot stronger. ~ Drake
Black Color quotes by Drake
My favorite color is you. ~ Suzanne Brockmann
Black Color quotes by Suzanne Brockmann
The black clouds and the white clouds,
Black means rain
White means no rain
Today it was different,
It rained despite of white clouds.
And nobody got wet. ~ Bikash Chaurasiya
Black Color quotes by Bikash Chaurasiya
Don't we all deal with life the way we do our military service? Doing what we can, while we wait either to be demobbed or do battle? Some will clean up the barrack-room, others will skive off, or spend their time playing cards, or trafficking, or plotting something. Officers command, soldiers obey, but no one's fooled by this comedy behind closed doors: one day, you'll have to go out there and die, officers and soldiers alike, the morons along with the crafty ones who smuggle toilet paper or deal in cigarettes on the black market. ~ Muriel Barbery
Black Color quotes by Muriel Barbery
One lady told me that before she saw 'Sounder' she didn't believe black people could love each other, have deep relationships in the same way as white people. ~ Cicely Tyson
Black Color quotes by Cicely Tyson
Care not what they say about the color of your skin let the brilliant light of your soul blind them. ~ Michael Dolan
Black Color quotes by Michael Dolan
Legitimate revolution must be led by, made by those who have been most oppressed: black, brown, yellow, red, and white women-with men relating to that the best they can. ~ Robin Morgan
Black Color quotes by Robin Morgan
When you get a black belt, it's not the number of techniques you know, but how well you know them. ~ Caio Terra
Black Color quotes by Caio Terra
If you want to dress up like a giraffe, and go to school like that, and that makes you happy then do it! ~ Andy Biersack
Black Color quotes by Andy Biersack
The touch of her hand underneath the head of Mrs. Copperfield was very light - in fact, so light that Mrs. Copperfield feared that she would be left alone from one minute to the next. She looked up. The sky was packed with gray clouds. She wanted to say something to Pacifica, but she did not dare to turn her head.
Pacifica swam a little farther inland. Suddenly she stood up and placed both her hand firmly in the small of Mrs. Copperfield's back. Mrs. Copperfield felt happy and sick at once. She turned her face and in so doing she brushed Pacifica's heavy stomach with her cheek. She held on hard to Pacifica's thigh with the strength of years of sorrow and frustration in her hand.
'Don't leave me,' she called out.
At this moment Mrs. Copperfield was strongly reminded of a dream that had recurred often during her life. She was being chased up a short hill by a dog. At the top of the hill here stood a few pine trees and a mannequin about eight feet high. She approached the mannequin and discovered her to be fashioned out of flesh, but without life. Her dress was of black velvet, and tapered to a very narrow width at the hem. Mrs. Copperfield wrapped one of the mannequin's arms tightly around her own waist. She was startled by the thickness of the arm and very pleased. The mannequin's other arm she ben upward from the elbow with her free hand. Then the mannequin began to sway backwards and forwards. Mrs. Copperfield clung all the more tightly to the mannequin and t ~ Jane Bowles
Black Color quotes by Jane Bowles
Black and white thinking limits understanding and feedback, two necessary ingredients for successful resolution in creative conflict and successful understanding. ~ David W. Earle
Black Color quotes by David W. Earle
Toni Morrison uses the term race talk to capture 'the explicit insertion into everyday life of racial signs and symbols that have no meaning other than positioning African Americans into the lowest level of the racial hierarchy.' Casual race talk is a key component of white racial framing because it accomplishes the interconnected goals of elevating whites while demeaning people of color; race talk always implies a racial 'us' and 'them'. ~ Robin DiAngelo
Black Color quotes by Robin DiAngelo
We cry the same tears. We feel the same pain, of hurt, of hunger, of thirst. When we bleed, our blood is one color. The color of the price of freedom. ~ Michelle Muriel
Black Color quotes by Michelle Muriel
After midday, the rain eased, and the Land Rover rode into Pokhara on a shaft of storm light. Next day there was humid sun and shifting southern skies, but to the north a deep tumult of swirling grays was all that could be seen of the Himalaya. At dusk, white egrets flapped across the sunken clouds, now black with rain; on earth, the dark had come. Then four miles above these mud streets of the lowlands, at a point so high as to seem overhead, a luminous whiteness shone- the light of snows. Glaciers loomed and vanished in the grays, and the sky parted, and the snow cone of Machhapuchare glistened like a spire of a higher kingdom. In the night, the stars convened, and the vast ghost of Machhapuchare radiated light, although there was no moon. ~ Peter Matthiessen
Black Color quotes by Peter Matthiessen
His short black hair gleamed like a raven's feathers, off-setting his pale skin and blue eyes so deep they were violet, even in the firelight. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Black Color quotes by Sarah J. Maas
I feel that my advances in the business world will shatter a lot of white myths about black athletes-and give some pride and hope to a lot of young blacks. ~ O.J. Simpson
Black Color quotes by O.J. Simpson
A lot of joblessness in the black community doesn't seem to be reachable through fiscal and monetary policies. People have not been drawn into the labor market even during periods of economic recovery. ~ William Julius Wilson
Black Color quotes by William Julius Wilson
Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective, an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does not respond to the name of everything but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of perception. How many colors are there in a field of grass to the crawling baby unaware of 'Green'? How many rainbows can light create for the untutored eye? How aware of variations in heat waves can that eye be? Imagine a world alive with incomprehensible objects and shimmering with an endless variety of movement and innumerable gradations of color. Imagine a world before the 'beginning was the word. ~ Stan Brakhage
Black Color quotes by Stan Brakhage
I'm ready, I'm bursting with color
I'm highlighed in the best this world has to offer - ~ Coco J. Ginger
Black Color quotes by Coco J. Ginger
I eased back on my elbows, tilting my head back to look up at the sky, which was pinkish, streaked with red. This was the time we knew best, that stretch of day going from dusk to dark. It seemed like we were always waiting for nighttime here. I could feel the trampoline easing up and down, moved by our own breathing, bringing us in small increments up and back from the sky as the colors faded, slowly, and the stars began to show themselves. ~ Sarah Dessen
Black Color quotes by Sarah Dessen
Lamium

Migraine dreams, jagged seams,
A badge of love and pain.
Or dreamy eyes, sleepy eyes,
Drooping, closing, losing light.
Packages scattered under the tree,
Some torn open, some tied tight.

Is there a heartbeat in those purple veins?
Are those embryos or mouths or rosary beads?
The color of my first dress, gathered with love,
Fairy cups stirred with blades of grass,
notes clustered on a windy score,
Three blooms, three friends, alas!

Grape flowers, cloud flowers, love flowers,
Paper parasols upside down, a butterfly herd
Stopped to rest by a deep green pool.
Petals small as a child's tears good-bye,
Dropped stitches everywhere
From a blanket the color of sky. ~ Louise Hawes
Black Color quotes by Louise Hawes
This is absurd," Colin grumbled. "At this rate, we'll arrive next Tuesday."
"Stop talking. Start moving." Bram nudged a sheep with his boot, wincing as he did. With his leg already killing him, the last thing he needed was a pain in the arse, but that's exactly what he'd inherited, along with all his father's accounts and possessions: responsibility for his wastrel cousin, Colin Sandhurst, Lord Payne.
He swatted at another sheep's flank, earning himself an indignant bleat and a few inches more.
"I have an idea," Colin said.
Bram grunted, unsurprised. As men, he and Colin were little more than strangers. But during the few years they'd overlapped at Eton, he recalled his younger cousin as being just full of ideas. Ideas that had landed him shin-deep in excrement. Literally, on at least one occasion.
Colin looked from Bram to Thorne and back again, eyes keen. "I ask you, gentlemen. Are we, or are we not, in possession of a great quantity of black powder? ~ Tessa Dare
Black Color quotes by Tessa Dare
The clear water the color of deeply steeped tea, surrounded by cattails and gracile grasses. ~ Lauren Slater
Black Color quotes by Lauren Slater
They had this movie called Juno about a teenage girl who gets pregnant and it's nominated for an Oscar. That's an unusual experience for me, 'cause when a black girl gets pregnant it ain't no Oscar. It's social work and a box of condoms is what that is. ~ D. L. Hughley
Black Color quotes by D. L. Hughley
So, I was sitting there and I watched 'Paranormal Activity' and I was like, 'Boy, white people do dumb stuff in movies.' So I was like, 'Why don't they just leave the house ... What if paranormal activity happened to a black couple?' ~ Marlon Wayans
Black Color quotes by Marlon Wayans
I was a black center in the middle of all the nature. I was nothing, but I could do anything. ~ James Franco
Black Color quotes by James Franco
Non-Muslims in Saudi Arabia can only celebrate Valentine's Day behind closed doors. Apparently, this has led to a huge black market for flowers and wrapping paper. ~ John Niven
Black Color quotes by John Niven
The movies are gray
The TV is black
The horses are running
Please bring me some food ~ Heinz Doofenshmirtz
