If nature didn't whittle down your network to a smaller number of strongly forged connections, you would never become an adult. You would remain a permanent child, frozen in sensory overload. ~ Donald O. Clifton
Whittle quotes by Donald O. Clifton
I'm ambitious and I'm determined and I know where I'm going to be. It's not where I want to be, but where I'm going to be. ~ Ricky Whittle
Whittle quotes by Ricky Whittle
Most moms and dads, they want to be good moms and dads. But it's an incredibly hard job when you are stressed out, when you are poor, when your life is in chaos. And giving them some of the tools to be better parents, to whittle away at that parenting gap, gives those kids a much better starting point in life. ~ Nicholas Kristof
Whittle quotes by Nicholas Kristof
The definition of a Racist is anybody winning an argument with a liberal. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
September 11 Never a trial that He is not there. Never a burden that He does not bear. Never a sorrow that He does not share. Moment by moment I'm under His care. - D.W.Whittle ~ Maggie Oman Shannon
Whittle quotes by Maggie Oman Shannon
I believe that almost all important, useful ideas are simple. Peter Whittle has recently put it nicely in an autobiographical essay. "If a piece of work is heavy and complicated then it is wrong." ... Some writers feel that to express their ideas in simple terms is degrading. Some use complexity to disguise the paucity of their material. In fact, simplicity is a virtue and when, as here, it is both original and useful, it can represent a real advance in knowledge. ~ Dennis Lindley
Whittle quotes by Dennis Lindley
Gentlemen, I give you the Whittle engine. ~ Frank Whittle
Whittle quotes by Frank Whittle
The best food I've had was actually in catering at 'Single Ladies.' It's insane. I can't live in Atlanta. In fact, even if I'm offered, I'm not sure I could come back for another six months, because I'll just be fat. ~ Ricky Whittle
Whittle quotes by Ricky Whittle
I like a man who can build things. Whittle me something out of wood and I'm sold. ~ Rachel Bilson
Whittle quotes by Rachel Bilson
He no longer heard Kellhus speak so much as observed him cut and carve, whittle and hew, as though the man had somehow shattered the glass of language and fashioned knives from the pieces. ~ R. Scott Bakker
Whittle quotes by R. Scott Bakker
Though it is the hardest thing, to work out one's weight and heft in the world, to whittle down all that I am and give it a value. ~ Anna Funder
Whittle quotes by Anna Funder
I have like 250 letters that I have to whittle it down to 150. Only then do you have the whole overview of a book. When it was finally edited, at least my take was, everybody's lying. You know? ~ Don Novello
Whittle quotes by Don Novello
A great deal of my battle, as an actor, is to whittle away the things that make me self-conscious and try to trick myself into not being self-conscious. So, it's always a challenge, whether I'm lying in a hospital bed or flying around with a rocket pack on my back, or what have you. On the best of days, it's a challenge for me. ~ Billy Campbell
Whittle quotes by Billy Campbell
If you have something Negative to say, then, say it in a Positive way. Don't set out to hurt people or their careers. We all deserve a fighting chance to succeed at what we do. ~ Patsy Whittle
Whittle quotes by Patsy Whittle
We have learned to whittle the Eden Tree to the shape of a surplice peg, We have learned to bottle our parents twain in the yelk of an addled egg. We know that the tail must wag the dog, for the horse is drawn by the cart, But the devil whoops, as he whooped of old; It's clever, but is it art? ~ Rudyard Kipling
Whittle quotes by Rudyard Kipling
Once, I started listing off all the people that I truly cared about. When I got to number seven, Penelope told me I either needed to whittle down my list or stop making friends immediately. My mother says you should never have more people in your life than you could defend from a hungry rakshasa. ~ Rainbow Rowell
Whittle quotes by Rainbow Rowell
If it's ALL about me, it's NOT about MUCH! ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
As for me, I went inside, walked up to my bedroom, and fell on the floor. What…just happened? Staring at the ceiling, I tried to take it all in. My mind began to race, trying to figure out what it all meant. Do I need to learn how to whittle? Cook fried chicken? Ride a horse? Use a scythe? My face began to feel flushed. And children? Oh, Lord. That means we might have children! What will we name them? Travis and Dolly? Oh my gosh. I have children in my future. I could see it plainly in front of me. They'll be little redheaded children with green eyes just like mine, and they'll have lots of freckles, too. I'll have ten of them, maybe eleven. I'll have to squat in the garden and give birth while picking my okra. Every stereotype of domestic country life came rushing to the surface. A lot of them involved bearing children.
Then my whole body relaxed in a mushy, contended heap as I remembered all the times I'd walked back into that very room after being with Marlboro Man, my cowboy, my savior. I remembered all the times I'd fallen onto my bed in a fizzy state of euphoria, sighing and smelling my shirt to try to get one last whiff. All the times I'd picked up the phone early in the morning and heard his sexy voice on the other end. All the times I'd longed to see him again, two minutes after he'd dropped me off. This was right, this was oh, so right. If I couldn't go a day without seeing him, I certainly couldn't go a lifetime… ~ Ree Drummond
Whittle quotes by Ree Drummond
If there's one thing I've learned in all my time working with children, if I could whittle those years down to a single revelation, it's this: They are extraordinarily resilient. They can withstand neglect; they can survive abuse; they can endure, even thrive, where adults would collapse like umbrellas. ~ A.J. Finn
Whittle quotes by A.J. Finn
A language like Ruby is a toolbox with some really neat little tools that do their job really nicely. JavaScript is a leather sheath with a really really sharp knife inside. That knife can cut anything, and with it you can do anything. You can kill a bear. You can catch fish. You can whittle a piece of wood into a pony. It's even a toothpick. ~ Nick Morgan
Whittle quotes by Nick Morgan
Oh, I suppose they're not exactly gone, those green boys. It's rather like a sapling turning into a tree. Can't scrape off the bark, and whittle it down until you find that sapling again, now can you? No, of course not. The sapling becomes an oak. Forever changed. The realities of that war will remain inside us through heaven or hell. Best try and face it, Ty. Running from it won't help. You'll never turn back into the innocent sapling you once were." Robert lifted his glass and grinned. "My friend, we've become a pair of gnarled old trees. ~ Kathleen Baldwin
Whittle quotes by Kathleen Baldwin
There are dons who care for the intellect and the imagination, and there are priests who care for the spirit; but broadly speaking the function of universities and churches alike is to trim and tame enthusiasm, to suppress curiosity, and, in short, to whittle immortal souls into serviceable props of the established order. ~ Hugh Kingsmill
Whittle quotes by Hugh Kingsmill
Government can take your money at gunpoint; businesses have to persuade you. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
I have always thought beach weddings are beautiful. A sunset ceremony with a beautiful sky, white drapes and fire lanterns. ~ Ricky Whittle
Whittle quotes by Ricky Whittle
I think that the older you get, the more you become your true, essential self. You find the things that make you happy. You whittle away the parts of yourself that mean less to you. ~ Tom Ford
Whittle quotes by Tom Ford
I had always realized it was desirable to gear down the jet. ~ Frank Whittle
Whittle quotes by Frank Whittle
A few months ago on a school morning, as I attempted to etch a straight midline part on the back of my wiggling daughter's soon-to-be-ponytailed blond head, I reminded her that it was chilly outside and she needed to grab a sweater.

"No, mama."

"Excuse me?"

"No, I don't want to wear that sweater, it makes me look fat."

"What?!" My comb clattered to the bathroom floor. "Fat?! What do you know about fat? You're 5 years old! You are definitely not fat. God made you just right. Now get your sweater."

She scampered off, and I wearily leaned against the counter and let out a long, sad sigh. It has begun. I thought I had a few more years before my twin daughters picked up the modern day f-word. I have admittedly had my own seasons of unwarranted, psychotic Slim-Fasting and have looked erroneously to the scale to give me a measurement of myself. But these departures from my character were in my 20s, before the balancing hand of motherhood met the grounding grip of running. Once I learned what it meant to push myself, I lost all taste for depriving myself. I want to grow into more of a woman, not find ways to whittle myself down to less.

The way I see it, the only way to run counter to our toxic image-centric society is to literally run by example. I can't tell my daughters that beauty is an incidental side effect of living your passion rather than an adherence to socially prescribed standards. I can't tell my son how t ~ Kristin Armstrong
Whittle quotes by Kristin Armstrong
The reason the first three Star Wars movies were so terrific, and the second three sucked so bad, is actually very simple. The first three were about rebels, shooting guns and driving fast, and speaking with American accents. The second three were about politicians, discussing treaties and holding court, and speaking with British accents. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
I might write four lines or I might write twenty. I subtract and I add until I really hit something I want to do. You don't always whittle down, sometimes you whittle up. ~ Grace Paley
Whittle quotes by Grace Paley
I grew up assuming that I would be in public service. I never planned to be in business. ~ Chris Whittle
Whittle quotes by Chris Whittle
Indeed, as Peter Whittle recounts, during World War II efforts to solve the question so sapped the energies and minds of Allied analysts ... that the suggestion was made that the problem be dropped over Germany, as the ultimate instrument of intellectual sabotage. ~ Brian Christian
Whittle quotes by Brian Christian
Nothing penetrates the liberal's sense of moral outrage. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
Because the truth is, the world will probably whittle your daughter down. But a mother never should. ~ Meg Wolitzer
Whittle quotes by Meg Wolitzer
Being female was so hard. Always having to rearrange yourself, to pluck yourself and whittle yourself and deprive yourself and inspect yourself in order to feel comfortable in this world. ~ Laura Kasischke
Whittle quotes by Laura Kasischke
You tell the big lie by carefully selecting only the small, isolated truths, linking them in such a way that that advance the bigger lie by painting a picture inside the viewer's head. The Ascended High Master of this Dark Art is Noam Chomsky. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
Not that I was morbidly obese or anything. But I guess I was hanging on the hope that one day I might accidentally whittle down to my inner toothpick. ~ Adele Griffin
Whittle quotes by Adele Griffin
You shouldn't speak until you know what you're talking about. That's why I get uncomfortable with interviews. Reporters ask me what I feel China should do about Tibet. Who cares what I think China should do? I'm a fucking actor! They hand me a script. I act. I'm here for entertainment. Basically, when you whittle everything away, I'm a grown man who puts on makeup. ~ Brad Pitt
Whittle quotes by Brad Pitt
Jupiter is so big and its gravitational pull so strong that man would find it difficult to move about on the surface. The answer is to whittle it down to proper size with terrajets and nuclear power, using the debris to increase the size of Jupiter's moons so they, too, can be colonized. ~ Fritz Zwicky
Whittle quotes by Fritz Zwicky
Here. Let me untangle your hair, at least. If we need to run, we can't have you stuck."
"I don't think Bob's up for running," I said.
"Then you'll take my horse."
"What about you?"
"I'll stay here and whittle a sword and kill the bear or, if that doesn't work, I'll just be eaten alive, happily sacrificing my life for yours." He gave me a look. "Or I'll just stay on the horse and you can sit behind me. Satan can hold two, I'm sure."
"Oh, so you're a cowboy now? I wasn't aware that architects were also masters of horseflesh. You and Satan BFFs now? Practiced your stunt-riding this morning?"
"My dad gave me a few lessons."
"When? When you were six?"
"Well, you know, Harper, maybe we should just stay here and bicker until the bear can't stand it anymore and kills us both. Would that make you happy? ~ Kristan Higgins
Whittle quotes by Kristan Higgins
Treat your past as a book that you learn from instead of a hammer that you beat yourself up about. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
I can change, whittle my square edges to fit in a round hole. God, I hope I'm never going to massacre myself that way. ~ Sylvia Plath
Whittle quotes by Sylvia Plath
While most people whittle their days chasing another buck, or a little bit more fame and attention, or a little bit more assurance that they're right or loved, death confronts all of us with a far more painful and important question: What is your legacy? How will the world be different and better when you're gone? What mark will you have made? What influence will you have caused? They say that a butterfly flapping its wings in Africa can cause a hurricane in Florida; well, what hurricanes will you leave in your wake? ~ Mark Manson
Whittle quotes by Mark Manson
There was a time when intellectual meant someone who uses reason and intellect. Today, people who call themselves intellectuals are in a form of mental death spiral: they search for, and find, those index cards that support their world view, and clutch little red books like rosaries in the face of all external evidence. They are ruled by appeals to authority. Their self-image and sense of emotional well-being trumps any and all objective evidence to the contrary. ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
Allow your sword to lie deeply within you and to lie dormant in your peace, but not so invisible that people can't see it glint in the sun. The world needs to know what you're made of. ~ Caroline Whittle
Whittle quotes by Caroline Whittle
Liberals want Conservatives to shut up. Conservatives want Liberals to keep talking. Because our arguments make sense and theirs don't ~ Bill Whittle
Whittle quotes by Bill Whittle
But if you eat this chap who's God,' said Llewelyn stoutly, 'how can it be horrible? If it's alright to eat God why is it horrible to eat Jim Whittle?'
'Because,' said Dymphna reasonably, ' if you eat God there's always plenty left. You can't eat God up because God just goes on and on and on and God can't ever be finished ... ~ Anthony Burgess
Whittle quotes by Anthony Burgess
Joe Biden would probably be running a Denny's if he wasn't Vice President. ~ Bill Whittle
