Any word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word. There are no exceptions to this rule. ~ Stephen King
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Stephen King
I now realize that I habitually fight against a leisurely pace; I resist giving in to slowness. ~ Daniel Klein
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Daniel Klein
Last week I pocketed a thesaurus and looked for synonyms for you but could only find rain and more rain and a thunderstorm that sounded like glass, like crystal, like an orchestra. ~ Shinji Moon
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Shinji Moon
I tried to find a word for it in my thesaurus, but there isn't one. At least, not one that doesn't belittle the plight of POWs and victims of famine. I guess we can just call it beyond suck. -Lulu Dark ~ Bennett Madison
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Bennett Madison
Take off your boots, please."
He set his feet apart and brought his hands to his hips. He let his gaze slide over her with deliberate slowness, not assessing this time, but going for a blatantly male vibe. He clearly couldn't believe he hadn't shut her up yet, and he was now switching to a different tactic.
"What else do you want me to take off? ~ Dana Marton
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Dana Marton
Never assume that the person you are dealing with is weaker or less important than you are. Some people are slow to take offense, which may make you misjudge the thickness of their skin, and fail to worry about insulting them. But should you offend their honor and their pride, they will overwhelm you with a violence that seems sudden and extreme given their slowness to anger. If you want to turn people down, it is best to do so politely and respectfully, even if you feel their request is impudent or their offer ridiculous. ~ Robert Greene
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Robert Greene
All novelists must form their personal pacts in some way with the slowness of their craft. There are some who demand of themselves a 'rate of production,' for whom it's a matter of pride to complete, say, a book every year. ~ Graham Swift
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Graham Swift
The voice called his name again and it came through a lot of throat. Steven twisted quickly on his stool.
Just a white wall and, down near the floor, the ventilation grille. Then movement behind the grille and Steven was on his knees, peering through it, pressing his face against the mesh. In there, in the shadows beyond the spill of light from the hall, the outline of an anvil-shaped head swayed gently.
Two eyes blinked limpidly, insolent in their slowness. A dark mass moved forward into the light.
"That Cripps man is going to fuck you up, dude."
It was a cow. Most of the body was below floor level but Steven could tell it was a full grown animal. A sienna Guernsey. He looked closely at the flawless sandy curves of forehead and cheek, at the chocolate darkening of the mouth and nostrils, at the badger rings around the eyes. For an absurd second he thought that if he looked hard enough at it the thing might phase back into his head and disappear.
But it was real and it stayed.
"What … ?"
"Yeah, I'm a cow, man. Touch me."
Steven stuck his fingers through the grille. The cow was a cow, warm and solid. ~ Matthew Stokoe
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Matthew Stokoe
8But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and t a thousand years as one day. 9 u The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise v as some count slowness, but w is patient toward you, [1] x not wishing that any should perish, but y that all should reach repentance. 10But z the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then a the heavens will pass away with a roar, and b the heavenly bodies [2] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. [3] 11Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, c what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 d waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and e the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13But according to his promise we are waiting for f new heavens and a new earth g in which righteousness dwells. ~ Anonymous
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Anonymous
A balanced life has a rhythym. But we live in a time, and in a culture, that encourages everyone to just move faster. I'm learning that if I don't take the time to tune in to my own more deliberate pace, I end up moving to someone else's, the speed of events around me setting a tempo that leaves me feeling scattered and out of touch with myself. I know now that I can't write fast; that words, my own thoughts and ideas, come to the surface slowly and in silence. A close relationship with myself requires slowness. Intimacy with my husband and guarded teenage sons requires slowness. A good conversation can't be hurried, it needs time in which to meander its way to revelation and insight. Even cooking dinner with care and attention is slow work. A thoughtful life is not rushed. ~ Katrina Kenison
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Katrina Kenison
While the rest of the world roars on, a large and growing minority is choosing not to do everything at full-throttle. In every human endeavour you can think of, from sex, work and exercise to food, medicine and urban design, these rebels are doing the unthinkable - they are making room for slowness. And the good news is that decelerating works. ~ Carl Honore
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Carl Honore
'In Praise of Slowness' chronicles the global trend towards deceleration that has come to be known as the Slow Movement. Don't worry, though: it is not a Luddite rant. I love speed. Going fast can be fun, liberating and productive. The problem is that our hunger for speed, for cramming more and more into less and less time, has gone too far. ~ Carl Honore
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Carl Honore
You want to fix what hurts the moment it starts hurting, but this time you're going to have to embrace the slowness of healing. You'll never be able to live with this part of your story until you realize you must make peace with what happened to you and your part in it. And that takes time. ~ Susan Meissner
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Susan Meissner
What can we do to maintain slowness in the face of those periods of busyness? How can we avoid overload, exhaustion, or even burnout?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, my answer is simply to pay attention.
I recognize the way I'm inclined to stay up late, the way I will procrastinate at every option- and instead of spiraling into that overwhelming sense of too much, I check in with myself.
Why am I feeling this way? What has changed? What is there more of? What is there less of?
Become better at recognizing the signs of a looming backslide and pay close attention to the areas of our lives that have the greatest impact, ensuring they never slip too far out of hand.
Nicholas Bate refers to this regular checking in as "taking your MEDS" or more specifically, paying attention to:

- Mindfulness
- Exercise
- Diet
- Sleep

Once I recognize which of these areas has changed, its simpler (not necessarily easier) to recognize the issue and start fixing it. Sometimes the changes aren't in my control, so I need to look for ways of finding slow by creating more opportunities for a moment of deep breathing or paying close attention to whats in front of me. But other times, I've simply lost sight of what works, and its a matter of adding more of these things I've neglected- Mindfulness, simplicity, kindness- and reducing the things that don't serve me well.
Above all else, though, I simply go back to my Why.
I call to mind the ~ Brooke McAlary
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Brooke McAlary
I was being cured of soldiering on endlessly: my job was now to be still, which had become almost easy at last. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Rebecca Solnit
A rigne is messu don gais.
The worst of wisdom is its slowness. ~ Senkriathra Fithail
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Senkriathra Fithail
The Thesaurus is to the writer what a rhyming dictionary is to
the songwriter - a reminder of all the choices - and you should use it with
gratitude. ~ William Zinsser
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by William Zinsser
What is another name for a Thesaurus? ~ Steven Wright
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Steven Wright
In a life threatening situation, whether terrorism or a rockslide, what kills most people is slowness to react. Regular lives are so safe, so event-less that there is a lack of comprehension when faced with death. It's not necessarily shock. It's disbelief. It's dismissal. Civilians say to themselves, I've got this wrong, this isn't what I think. But it is, and by the time they've realized, it's too late. And of course sometimes they do in fact have it wrong. They've misread the situation, and they're left embarrassed and maybe ashamed. But....." "But they're alive," Mayes finished. ~ Tom Wood
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Tom Wood
You have that expression on your face that speaks of incipient moral dubiousness,' Torin observed, making me glad I'd bought that thesaurus a few years back. ~ Rachel Hawkins
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Rachel Hawkins
As for my slowness as a writer - that's been a struggle, no question. We live in a culture that values and rewards machine-speed productivity. Even the arts are expected to conform to the Taylor model of productivity. ~ Junot Diaz
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Junot Diaz
What she did NOT appreciate was the homework. Captain Wilkes had scrounged textbooks for her to study. Not just Marine manuals, either. Math, science, English. Chemistry. Yuck! With weekly tests. And he was making her do all her platoon reports, then "annotating" them. He had given her a dictionary and thesaurus, among other things, and after the first report after giving them to her told her she was "not allowed words of more than two syllables." It was worse than fucking school. "Recess" was killing zombies. ~ John Ringo
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by John Ringo
When I look fast, I'm not smooth and I am going slowly. And when I look slow, I am smooth and going fast. ~ Alain Prost
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Alain Prost
6. Slowness of movement is the key to awareness, and awareness is the key to learning. As ~ Norman Doidge
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Norman Doidge
Frederick Faber: In the spiritual life God chooses to try our patience first of all by His slowness. He is slow: we are swift and precipitate. It is because we are but for a time, and He has been for eternity ... There is something greatly overawing in the extreme slowness of God. Let it overshadow our souls, but let it not disquiet them. We must wait for God, long, meekly, in the wind and wet, in the thunder and the lightning, in the cold and the dark. Wait, and He will come. He never comes to those who do not wait. He does not go their road. When He comes, go with Him, but go slowly, fall a little behind; when he quickens His pace, be sure of it, before you quicken yours. But when He slackens, slacken at once: and do not be slow only, but silent, very silent, for He is God. ~ John Ortberg
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by John Ortberg
The spark for 'In Praise of Slowness' came when I began reading to my children. Every parent knows that kids like their bedtime stories read at a gentle, meandering pace. But I used to be too fast to slow down with the Brothers Grimm. I would zoom through the classic fairy tales, skipping lines, paragraphs, whole pages. ~ Carl Honore
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Carl Honore
Every artist needs canvass, mine just happens to be Microsoft Word and a Thesaurus. ~ Lori Lesko
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Lori Lesko
Sometimes I think people think poetry must be filled with flowery language, thesaurus-driven vocabulary or the dreaded "purple prose," which is often prevalent in my genre...But oftentimes the best poetry isn't difficult to understand at all. It's the juxtaposition of the words. The line breaks. The enjambs. The shape of the poem. Or the double meanings the positioning of the words make the reader feel or think or do. ~ R.B. O'Brien
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by R.B. O'Brien
You don't want to sound as though you used a Sharper Image catalogue for a thesaurus. ~ Renni Browne
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Renni Browne
No thesaurus can give you those words, no rhyming dictionary. They must happen out of you. ~ Dorothy Fields
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Dorothy Fields
The wide difference between the two characters, the slowness and want of energy of the Spartans as contrasted with the dash and enterprise of their opponents, proved of the greatest service, especially to a maritime empire like Athens. Indeed this was shown by the Syracusans, who were most like the Athenians in character, and also most successful in combating them. ~ Thucydides
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Thucydides
The danger isn't the river's speed, friend, but its slowness. ~ Kazuo Ishiguro
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Kazuo Ishiguro
A slowness to applaud betrays a cold temper or an envious spirit. ~ Hannah More
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Hannah More
No," I said finally.
"Slowness in Answering," she said into the handheld. "When's the last time you slept?"
"1940" I said promptly, which is the problem with Quickness in Answering. ~ Connie Willis
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Connie Willis
Then I stop existing. She is talking, talking, takes off who knows where, she says it all starts over, speech, paths, butterflies and that she just loves words' inevitable slowness, she says that when in distress everything is overcome by the sound of words and that everything then becomes impossible to understand, she says things are exploding in her head and that everything must be attempted again like a backhand, a lob in mindspace, she repeats the mind is fragile but the eyes, but the eyes Melanie, she says one must not give up, that nothing is impossible if in the realm of the improbable memory realises the certitude which in us keeps an eye out for beauty on the horizon, she talks about our attachment to certain words, that they are like small slow deaths in concise reality. ~ Nicole Brossard
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Nicole Brossard
That is my problem with life, I rush through it, like I'm being chased. Even things whose whole point is slowness, like drinking relaxing tea. When I drink relaxing tea I suck it down as if I'm in a contest for who can drink relaxing tea the quickest. ~ Miranda July
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Miranda July
In all its myriad manifestations, the language of anti-Semitism through the ages is a dictionary of non-sequiturs and antonyms, a thesaurus of illogic and inconsistency. ~ Paul Johnson
Slowness Thesaurus quotes by Paul Johnson
I hear a swelling swoosh; from the south a bullet train whizzes into view on the tracks, knives through the landscape in a matter of moments, then disappears with a whoosh. It has just covered in a few seconds what has taken me hours to walk. That very fast train reminds me that, as a pilgrim, travel is made holy in its slowness. I see things that neither the passengers of the train nor the drivers of the automobiles see. I feel things that they will never feel. I have time to ponder, imagine, daydream. I tire. I thirst. In my slow walking, I find me. ~ Kevin A. Codd
