The word mystical is an even worse word than spirituality - that artists take drugs, and then they add some crazy extra thing to what we all know is real. But our job as artists or as human beings is to investigate what we really think is real. ~ Chris Martin
Sketch Artist quotes by Chris Martin

A beautiful person among the Greeks, was thought to betray by this sign some secret favor of the immortal gods; and we can pardonpride, when a woman possesses such a figure that wherever she stands, or moves, or leaves a shadow on the wall, or sits for a portrait to the artist, she confers a favor on the world. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Sketch Artist quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web. ~ Pablo Picasso
Sketch Artist quotes by Pablo Picasso
I do have my own personal convictions and values, and I live by those. But as an artist, as a portrait photographer, my job is to tell the truth and to capture someone's spirit on a certain day. And it's never the whole truth; it's the truth I experience in a very intense and intimate fashion. ~ Platon
Sketch Artist quotes by Platon
I don't think I approach my songs differently from other artists. You get a big picture of it, and you imagine the song and hear and feel it, and that big picture is like a snapshot, and it comes to you as fast as it takes to click a camera. ~ Steve Vai
Sketch Artist quotes by Steve Vai
As for the outside world, the artist is confronted by what he sees; but what he sees is primarily what he looks at. ~ Andre Malraux
Sketch Artist quotes by Andre Malraux
Every major work of art is a transgression, but the artist is not necessarily, by nature, a transgressor. ~ E.L. Doctorow
Sketch Artist quotes by E.L. Doctorow
The second album was like being on a completely different planet compared to when we were making the first album ... Even though it was the same musicians, the same artist, the same studio, the same producer, - it felt like a completely different piece of a puzzle. ~ Katie Melua
Sketch Artist quotes by Katie Melua
Experience is the best teacher of all. And for that, there are no guarantees that one will become an artist. Only the journey matters. ~ Harry Callahan

I'm an artist and a journalist. I travel around the world very often for 'Vice Magazine,' and I draw and I write about prisons, about conflict zones. ~ Molly Crabapple
Sketch Artist quotes by Molly Crabapple
How often people speak of art and science as though they were two entirely different things, with no interconnection. An artist is emotional, they think, and uses only his intuition; he sees all at once and has no need of reason. A scientist is cold, they think, and uses only his reason; he argues carefully step by step, and needs no imagination. That is all wrong. The true artist is quite rational as well as imaginative and knows what he is doing; if he does not, his art suffers. The true scientist is quite imaginative as well as rational, and sometimes leaps to solutions where reason can follow only slowly; if he does not, his science suffers. ~ Isaac Asimov
Sketch Artist quotes by Isaac Asimov
We discover truth by asking rapier-like questions that cut through the thick fog of doctrinarism. Artists and philosophers must be subversive: we need these rebellious cynics to ask questions, they must resist cultural norms; seek out truths that are not self-evident and challenge everything. Doubt, not blind belief, is essential for discovering truth. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Sketch Artist quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
Roth Unbound is filled with intelligent readings and smart judgments. Because of the author's sympathy and sharp mind, it offers real insight into the creative process itself, and into Philip Roth's high calling as a great American artist. The book is, in some ways, a radical rereading of Roth's life and his work. It is impossible, by the end, not to feel a tender admiration for Roth as a novelist and indeed for Claudia Roth Pierpont as an empathetic and brilliant critic. ~ Colm Toibin
Sketch Artist quotes by Colm Toibin
When I began competing with the other artists in New York, I discovered classical North Indian music. ~ Henry Flynt
Sketch Artist quotes by Henry Flynt
Artists do not need monuments erected for them because their works are their monuments. ~ Antonio Gaudi
Sketch Artist quotes by Antonio Gaudi
I think every creative impulse that a working writer, or artist of any sort has, comes out of that dark old country where dreams come from. ~ Anne Rivers Siddons
Sketch Artist quotes by Anne Rivers Siddons
I liked the name Saadiq and didn't want to be known as an artist as Raphael Wiggins. ~ Raphael Saadiq
Sketch Artist quotes by Raphael Saadiq
We're painting the same people all our life - it's just the way we look at them that changes. If you experience trauma, you can speak about it in so many different ways. You can speak about landscape, you can speak about your food; it's always different. Trauma is the beginning of life as an artist. ~ Christian Boltanski
Sketch Artist quotes by Christian Boltanski
Don't be an art critic. Paint. There lies salvation. ~ Paul Cezanne
Sketch Artist quotes by Paul Cezanne
No artist knows in his own lifetime whether what he does will be the slightest good, because it takes at least seventy-five to a hundred years before the thing begins to sort itself out. ~ Francis Bacon
Sketch Artist quotes by Francis Bacon
I can't work without a model. I won't say I turn my back on nature ruthlessly in order to turn a study into a picture, arranging the colors, enlarging and simplifying; but in the matter of form I am too afraid of departing from the possible and the true. ~ Vincent Van Gogh
Sketch Artist quotes by Vincent Van Gogh
I eagerly await new concepts and processes. I believe that the electronic image will be the next major advance. Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will again strive to comprehend and control them. ~ Ansel Adams
Sketch Artist quotes by Ansel Adams
Im gonna try to pay for CLERKS III myself. As much as I love the crowd-funding model, thats an advancement in indie film that belongs to the next generation of artists. I started on my own dime, and if Im allowed, I should finish on my own dime. ~ Kevin Smith
Sketch Artist quotes by Kevin Smith

Any artist, the work you do, if it's a painting or if it's a performance, you hope it translates to a common denominator with the people that they see something in their own life in there. Or they see something in somebody else's life. That's what's fun about sharing art. ~ Matthew McConaughey

Sketch Artist quotes by Benjamin Mumford-Zisk
For now, I'm supposing that all movements are equal, which they're not, except in this respect: that none of them gives a damn about artists beyond their immediate utility. Good movements will use a writer just as ruthlessly as bad ones; since they all fancy they have better things to do than worry about one man's artistic survival. ~ Wilfrid Sheed
Sketch Artist quotes by Wilfrid Sheed
In every artist there is poetry. In every human being there is the poetic element. We know, we feel, we believe. ~ Ernst Haas
Sketch Artist quotes by Ernst Haas
When he was creating this picture, Leonardo da Vinci encountered a serious problem: he had to depict Good - in the person of Jesus - and Evil - in the figure of Judas, the friend who resolves to betray him during the meal. He stopped work on the painting until he could find his ideal models.

One day, when he was listening to a choir, he saw in one of the boys the perfect image of Christ. He invited him to his studio and made sketches and studies of his face.

Three years went by. The Last Supper was almost complete, but Leonardo had still not found the perfect model for Judas. The cardinal responsible for the church started to put pressure on him to finish the mural.

After many days spent vainly searching, the artist came across a prematurely aged youth, in rags and lying drunk in the gutter. With some difficulty, he persuaded his assistants to bring the fellow directly to the church, since there was no time left to make preliminary sketches.

The beggar was taken there, not quite understanding what was going on. He was propped up by Leonardo's assistants, while Leonardo copied the lines of impiety, sin and egotism so clearly etched on his features.

When he had finished, the beggar, who had sobered up slightly, opened his eyes and saw the picture before him. With a mixture of horror and sadness he said:

'I've seen that picture before!'

'When?' asked an astonished Leonardo.

'Three year ~ Paulo Coelho

Sketch Artist quotes by Annie Leibovitz
And it was about then, about that time, that I began to find life unsatisfactory as an explanation of itself and was forced to adopt the method of the artist of not explaining but putting the blocks together in some other way that seems more significant to him. Which is a rather fancy way of saying I started writing. ~ Tennessee Williams
