Clean eating necessarily implies that any other form of eating – and consequently the eater of it – is dirty or impure and thus bad, and it's not simply a way of shaming and persecuting others, but leads to that self-shaming and self-persecution that is forcibly detrimental to true healthy eating. ~ Nigella Lawson
Self Persecution quotes by Nigella Lawson
It is the reformer who is anxious for the reform, and not society, from which he should expect nothing better than opposition, abhorrence and even mortal persecution. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Self Persecution quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
People talk about history and things like slavery, genocide, and religious persecution as horrors that happened in the past because we were ignorant. But nothing's changed. We still hate what we don't understand. ~ J. Matthew Nespoli
Self Persecution quotes by J. Matthew Nespoli
A church that suffers no persecution but enjoys the privileges and support of the things of the earth - beware! - is not the true church of Jesus Christ. A preaching that does not point out sin is not the preaching of the gospel. A preaching that makes sinners feel good, so that they are secured in their sinful state, betrays the gospel's call. ~ Oscar Romero
Self Persecution quotes by Oscar Romero
If your written words become literal nails to crucify you with, then you have done your job well. You provoked a reaction, whether it is positive or negative is irrelevant. Writing that evokes no reaction is a body without a soul. ~ Stewart Stafford
Self Persecution quotes by Stewart Stafford
The three most powerful and most apparent means used by Rome to retain her power over the minds of her votaries are Ignorance, Superstition, and Persecution. ~ Charles Spurgeon
Self Persecution quotes by Charles Spurgeon
People say that Nagasaki is famous for persecution and devastation, for it has known much in it's history. But Nagasaki is not the only place that has experienced both persecution and destruction The reason Nagasaki is famous, is because it is rebuilt, because it has always survived. ~ Takashi Nagai
Self Persecution quotes by Takashi Nagai
And in that hour,
The seeds of cruelty, that since have swell'd
To such gigantic and enormous growth,
Were sown in human nature's fruitful soil.
Hence date the persecution and the pain
That man inflicts on all inferior kinds,
Regardless of their plaints. ~ William Cowper
Self Persecution quotes by William Cowper
Take great pleasure and joy in the outcome of a time of suffering, trial, or persecution, realizing that we are enhancing our heavenly reward and understanding more about the power of suffering (Rev. 2:10). ~ John F. MacArthur Jr.
Self Persecution quotes by John F. MacArthur Jr.
What the Nazis themselves claimed to be their chief discovery - the role of the Jewish people in world politics - and their chief interest - persecution of Jews all over the world - have been regarded by public opinion as a pretext for winning the masses or an interesting device of demagogy. ~ Hannah Arendt
Self Persecution quotes by Hannah Arendt
Affliction shows the power of Christ's blood, when it gives peace in an hour of trouble, when it can make happy in sickness, poverty, persecution and death. Do not be surprised if you suffer, but glorify God. ~ Robert Murray M'Cheyne
Self Persecution quotes by Robert Murray M'Cheyne
I'm an atheist, so it was actually a joy. Spitting on Christ was a great deal of fun. I can't embrace a male god who has persecuted female sexuality throughout the ages. And that persecution still goes on today all over the world. ~ Amanda Donohoe
Self Persecution quotes by Amanda Donohoe
Of course, ministers look upon theaters as rival attractions, and most of their hatred is born of business views. They think people ought to be driven to church by having all other places closed. In my judgment the theater has done good, while the church has done harm. The drama never has insisted upon burning anybody. Persecution is not born of the stage. ~ Robert Green Ingersoll
Self Persecution quotes by Robert Green Ingersoll
The suffering of sickness and the suffering of persecution have this in common: they are both intended by Satan for the destruction of our faith, and governed by God for the purifying of our faith ... Christ sovereignly accomplishes His loving, purifying purpose, by overruling Satan's destructive attempts. Satan is always aiming to destroy our faith; but Christ magnifies His power in weakness. ~ John Piper
Self Persecution quotes by John Piper
Our Lord came to the aid of each great tribulation with a special devotion. The present and future tribulations of the Church and of nations are greater than at any other period, and this persecution is more dangerous than those of previous times. Hence, the devotion which God sends to the succor of His Church and of the nations at the present time is the devotion to the Most Holy Eucharist. It is the highest of all devotions. ~ Pope Leo XIII
Self Persecution quotes by Pope Leo XIII
An injustice is tolerable only when it is necessary to avoid an even greater injustice. ~ John Rawls
Self Persecution quotes by John Rawls
The forefathers of the United States were children of religious bigotry and persecution, and, as a result, fled Britain to create a new approach to life and government. They valued intellect and education. In fact, they outlined the principles of the United States' democracy to establish intellectual freedom from the Church. ~ Mike Medavoy
Self Persecution quotes by Mike Medavoy
If one takes full account of the persecution of heretics, the frequency and savagery of the religious wars which Christianity had endangered, the harm caused, especially to children, by the pernicious doctrine of original sin, a case could be made for saying that the world would have been better off without Christianity. ~ A.J. Ayer
Self Persecution quotes by A.J. Ayer
True believing Christians are sheep among wolves, sheep for the slaughter. They must be baptized in anxiety, distress, affliction, persecution, suffering, and death. ~ William Roscoe Estep
Self Persecution quotes by William Roscoe Estep
The turn of the century was the lowest point for the devastation of Indian culture by disease and persecution, and it's a wonder to me that they survived it and have not only maintained their identity, but are actually growing stronger in some ways. The situation is still very bad, especially in certain geographical areas, but there are more Indians going to school, more Indians becoming professional people, more Indians assuming full responsibility in our society. We have a long way to go, but we're making great strides. ~ N. Scott Momaday
Self Persecution quotes by N. Scott Momaday
Persecution, in short, is like the goldsmith's stamp on real silver and gold - it is one of the marks of a converted man. ~ J.C. Ryle
Self Persecution quotes by J.C. Ryle
American political discourse had framed the Jewish problem as an immigration problem. Germany's persecution of Jews raised the specter of a vast influx of Jewish refugees at a time when America was reeling from the Depression. ~ Erik Larson
Self Persecution quotes by Erik Larson
In fact, it is known from tales brought back by missionaries that the Japanese version of The Sinner's Guide was one of the bullwarks that sustained the faith of the Japanese Catholics during two centuries of terrible persecution, when both in Europe and Japan, Japanese Christianity was believed dead. In 1865, when missionaries were again allowed into Japan, missionary Father Bernard Petitjean was astonished to find in the hills around Nagasaki thousands of Japanese Catholics who had kept the Faith, hidden but vital, without priests, for over 200 years! Immense was the joy of these faithful ones at once again having a Catholic priest among them. The Sinner's Guide had played a providential role in sustaining the Faith in their souls during that trying time. ~ Louis Of Granada
Self Persecution quotes by Louis Of Granada
All persecution is a sign of fear; for if we did not fear the power of an opinion different from our own, we should not mind others holding it. ~ Phyllis Bottome
Self Persecution quotes by Phyllis Bottome
But this inestimable privilege was soon violated: with the knowledge of truth the emperor imbibed the maxims of persecution; and the sects which dissented from the catholic church were afflicted and oppressed by the triumph of Christianity. Constantine easily believed that the heretics, who presumed to dispute his opinions or to oppose his commands, were guilty of the most absurd and criminal obstinacy; and that a seasonable application of moderate severities might save those unhappy men from the danger of an everlasting condemnation. ~ Edward Gibbon
Self Persecution quotes by Edward Gibbon
So really, it was just as well that Godmother had caught up to me, in spite of my best efforts to avoid her. I'd hate to find out that the universe really wasn't conspiring against me. It would jerk the rug out from under my persecution complex. -Harry ~ Jim Butcher
Self Persecution quotes by Jim Butcher
Suspicion and persecution are weeds of the same dunghill, and flourish best together. ~ Thomas Paine
Self Persecution quotes by Thomas Paine
Why, sir,' said the lawyer, 'if the persecution were tortious, and if it happened at sea, or even on fresh water or reasonably damp land, the Admiralty court would no doubt have cognizance.'
'Pray, sir,' said Stephen, 'just how damp would the land have to be?'
'Oh, pretty damp, pretty damp, I believe. The judge's patent gives him power to deal with matters in, upon, or by the sea, or public streams, or freshwater ports, rivers, nooks and places between the ebb and flow of the tide, and upon the shores and banks adjacent - all tolerably humid. ~ Patrick O'Brian
Self Persecution quotes by Patrick O'Brian
Any love is condemned to suffer a murderous persecution. We are impotent of feeling and do not forgive other people's love. So don't let anyone know that you love. ~ Nelson Rodrigues
Self Persecution quotes by Nelson Rodrigues
Pray for the physical needs of those believers who have been dislocated and sent away from their homes, especially for families traveling with the young, the sick, and the elderly. Pray for the gospel to continue to spread even as believers are scattered because of persecution. Pray for Christians living in hostile areas to have wisdom as they decide whether to leave for a safer place, or to stay and preach the gospel where they are. ~ Alana Terry
Self Persecution quotes by Alana Terry
For him, behind every feeling and thought was the sense of the open door leading into nothingness. To be sure, he suffered from dread of many things, of madness, the police, insomnia, and also dread of death. But everything he dreaded he likewise desired and longed for at the same time. He was full of burning curiosity about suffering, destruction, persecution, madness and death. ~ Hermann Hesse
Self Persecution quotes by Hermann Hesse
Their faith was based on such a strong personal experience of the dead and risen Christ that they feared nothing and no one, and even saw persecution as a cause of honor that enabled them to follow in Jesus' footsteps and to be like him, witnessing with their life. ~ Pope Francis
Self Persecution quotes by Pope Francis
Believers in persecution taught us another important truth. The freedom to believe and witness has nothing to do with the government or political system. The freedom to believe and witness has nothing to do with the civil and political rights that might or might not be present. This is one of the most important lessons that we learned from believers in persecution: They (and you and I) are just as free to share Jesus today in Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Communist countries as you and I are in America. It isn't a matter of political freedom. It is simply a matter of obedience. The price for obedience might be different in different places - but it is always possible to obey Christ's call to make disciples. Every believer - in every place - is always free to make that choice. ~ Nik Ripken
Self Persecution quotes by Nik Ripken
The history of the Jews is…intensely peculiar in the fact of having given the Western world its concept of origins and monotheism, its ethical traditions, and the founder of its prevailing religion, yet suffering dispersion, statelessness, and ceaseless persecution, and finally in our times nearly successful genocide, dramatically followed by fulfillment of the never-relinquished ream of return to their homeland. Viewing this strange and singular history one can not escape the impression that it must contain some special significance for the history of mankind, that in some way, whether one believes in divine purpose or inscrutable circumstance, the Jews have been singled out to carry the tale of human fate. ~ Barbara W. Tuchman
Self Persecution quotes by Barbara W. Tuchman
The Christians tried to separate themselves from the Jewish crowd so they wouldn't be the recipients of the persecution of the Romans. And the way they did it was to say, the Jews killed our hero too. And so Christians began to define themselves over against the orthodox party of the Jews as a way of surviving against the Roman onslaught. ~ John Shelby Spong
Self Persecution quotes by John Shelby Spong
Narrow minds can develop as well through persecution as through benevolence; they can assure themselves of their power by tyrannizing cruelly or beneficially over others. ~ Honore De Balzac
Self Persecution quotes by Honore De Balzac
Persecution always acts as a jell for members of cults; it proves to them, in the absence of history, liturgy, tradition, and doctrine, that they are God's chosen. ~ Barbara Grizzuti Harrison
Self Persecution quotes by Barbara Grizzuti Harrison
The First Amendment, he explained, exposed tolerance as a sham, because tolerance implies one superior group of people deigning to put up with their inferiors. "It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it were the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights," Washington wrote. "For, happily, the Government of the United States . . . gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance." Of ~ Sarah Vowell
Self Persecution quotes by Sarah Vowell
Religions that teach brotherly love have been used as an excuse for persecution, and our profoundest scientific insight is made into a means of mass destruction. ~ Bertrand Russell
Self Persecution quotes by Bertrand Russell
Now whenever things are so that a lot of people feel they ought to be doing something, the weak, and those who go weak with a lot of complicated thinking, always make for a sort of do-nothing religion, very pious and superior, and submit to persecution and the will of the Lord. ~ H.G.Wells
Self Persecution quotes by H.G.Wells
Why would the apostles lie? ... Liars always lie for selfish reasons. If they lied, what was their motive, what did they get out of it? What they got out of it was misunderstanding, rejection, persecution, torture, and martyrdom. Hardly a list of perks! ~ Peter Kreeft
Self Persecution quotes by Peter Kreeft
Not being allowed to persecute someone else in the name of your religion does NOT equate to religious persecution. ~ Christina Engela
Self Persecution quotes by Christina Engela
In September 1999, the Department of Justice succeeded in denaturalizing 63 participants in Nazi acts of persecution; and in removing 52 such individuals from this country. This appears to be but a small portion of those who actually were brought here by our own government. A 1999 report to the Senate and the House said "that between 1945 and 1955, 765 scientists, engineers, and technicians were brought to the United States under Overcast, Paperclip, and similar programs. It has been estimated that at least half, and perhaps as many as 80 percent of all the imported specialists were former Nazi Party members."

A number of these scientists were recruited to work for the Air Force's School of Aviation Medicine (SAM) at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas, where dozens of human radiation experiments were conducted during the Cold War. Among them were flash-blindness studies in connection with atomic weapons tests and data gathering for total-body irradiation studies conducted in Houston. The experiments for which Nazi investigators were tried included many related to aviation research. Hubertus Strughold, called "the father of space medicine," had a long career at the SAM, including the recruitment of other Paperclip scientists in Germany. On September 24, 1995 the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported that as head of Nazi Germany's Air Force Institute for Aviation Medicine, Strughold particpated in a 1942 conference that discussed "experiments" on human beings. The experimen ~ Carol Rutz
Self Persecution quotes by Carol Rutz
Jesus is persecuted in every injured saint, and He is mighty to avenge His beloved ones. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Self Persecution quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
To be a bad girl is to break any socially accepted rule. For some women, it's the way they dress. For other girls, it's the act of going to school. At one point, it was fighting for the right to vote. Anything we do outside the lines is immediately up for persecution. ~ Ann Shen
Self Persecution quotes by Ann Shen
He made a pit and digged it. He was cunning in his plans and industrious in his labors. He stooped to the dirty work of digging. He did not fear to soil his own hands. He was willing to work in a ditch if others might fall therein. What mean things men will do to wreak revenge on the godly. They hunt for good men as if they were brute beasts - they that will not give them the fair chase afforded to the hare or the fox, but must secretly entrap them because they can neither run them down nor shoot them down. Our enemies will not meet us to the face for they fear us as much as they pretend to despise us. But let us look on to the end of the scene. The verse says he has fallen into the ditch that he has made. Ah, there he is. Let us laugh at his disappointment. Lo, he is himself the beast. He has hunted his own soul. The chase has brought him a goodly victim. So should it ever be. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Self Persecution quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
To show a 'well-founded fear of persecution', an alien need not prove that it is more likely than not that he or she will be persecuted in his or her home country. ~ John Paul Stevens
Self Persecution quotes by John Paul Stevens
Then he raised his voice in a prophet-like challenge that I knew would live with me forever: "Don't ever give up in freedom what we would never give up in persecution! ~ Nik Ripken
Self Persecution quotes by Nik Ripken
The persecution of the innovator and protestant has always been inspired by fear on the part of constituted authority of having its infallibility questioned and its power undermined. ~ Emma Goldman
