Replace Maladaptive Thoughts with Coping Statements

When you feel anxious in social situations, you probably have many false beliefs and maladaptive thoughts, such as "I don't fit in" or "I'm so awkward." An important part of coping with social anxiety is to be able to recognize when your thinking is clouded.
Use your journal to record events that make you feel anxious, and examine what you were thinking at the time and why. It may help to refer to the list of maladaptive thinking patterns on pages 25 and 26 to help you see when your thinking is faulty. Remember that figuring out your faulty thoughts requires that you be totally honest with yourself. Once you have identified your maladaptive thoughts, you can work to replace them with more constructive thoughts, called coping statements. ~ Heather Moehn
Precautionary Statements quotes by Heather Moehn
When I look at the chaotic and volatile debate right now, both in Germany and around the world, my impression and concern is that the daily barrage of proposals and political statements is making markets and consumers even more nervous. Still, Brussels is pressing for a joint European approach. ~ Peer Steinbruck
Precautionary Statements quotes by Peer Steinbruck
I don't make political statements; let's all have a laugh. Let's all live and be free. I try and live to the letter of the law, but right on the edge of it. ~ Mark Roberts
Precautionary Statements quotes by Mark Roberts
Making any statement of your feelings is risky. It's just like making pictures. ~ Joel Meyerowitz
Precautionary Statements quotes by Joel Meyerowitz
I awakened. is that not a wonderful statement? ~ Mary Anne Radmacher
Precautionary Statements quotes by Mary Anne Radmacher
From time immemorial, some men supposed to deal in one-valued 'eternal verities'. We called such men 'philosophers' or 'meta-physicians'. But they seldom realized that all their 'eternal verities' consisted only of words, and words which, for the most part, belonged to a primitive language, refleting in its structure the assumed structure of the world of remote antiquity. Besides, they did not realize that these 'eternal verities' last only so long as the human nervous system is not altered. Under the influence of these 'philosophers', two-valued 'logic', and the confusion of orders of abstractions, nearly all of us contracted a firmly rooted predilection for 'general' statements - 'universals', as they were called - which in most cases inherently involved the semantic one-valued conviction of validity for all 'time' to come. ~ Alfred Korzybski
Precautionary Statements quotes by Alfred Korzybski
It is this mythical, or rather symbolic, content of the religious traditions which is likely to come into conflict with science. This occurs whenever this religious stock of ideas contains dogmatically fixed statements on subjects which belong in the domain of science. ~ Albert Einstein
Precautionary Statements quotes by Albert Einstein
Budgets are nothing if not statements of priorities. ~ Jeff Merkley
Precautionary Statements quotes by Jeff Merkley
The Suyá reaction to my recording was one of the clearest statements I obtained about the importance of the different parts to the total sound. The melody line - the clearly organized tone and rythm being performed by the older men - was only part of the desired effect, which also included the apparently irreverent calls, shouts, and giggles. ~ Anthony Seeger
Precautionary Statements quotes by Anthony Seeger
I am sure that every one of my colleagues - Democrat, Republican, and Independent - agrees with that statement. That in the voting booth, every one is equal. ~ Barbara Boxer
Precautionary Statements quotes by Barbara Boxer
Companies will often use the legal system to scare people away from attacking them. But we all should be free to make critical statements about anybody, unless those statements are malicious. ~ Lawrence Lessig
Precautionary Statements quotes by Lawrence Lessig
I have never united myself to any church because I found difficulty in giving my assent without mental reservation to the long, complicated statements of Christian doctrine which characterize the articles of belief and the usual confession of faith. ~ Abraham Lincoln
Precautionary Statements quotes by Abraham Lincoln
"Best in the world," "lowest price in existence, " etc are at best claiming the expected. But superlative of that sort are usually damaging. They suggestion looseness of expression, a tendency to exaggerate, a careless truth. They lead readers to discount all the statements that you make ~ Claude C. Hopkins
Precautionary Statements quotes by Claude C. Hopkins
It is the rule which says that the other rules of scientific procedure must be designed in such a way that they do not protect any statement in science against falsification. ~ Karl Popper
Precautionary Statements quotes by Karl Popper
Men," he began his address to the officers, measuring his pauses carefully. "You're American officers. The officers of no other army in the world can make that statement. Think about it. ~ Joseph Heller
Precautionary Statements quotes by Joseph Heller
To listen is very hard, because it asks of us so much interior stability that we no longer need to prove ourselves by speeches, arguments, statements, or declarations. True listeners no longer have an inner need to make their presence known. They are free to receive, to welcome, to accept.
Listening is much more than allowing another to talk while waiting for a chance to respond. Listening is paying full attention to others and welcoming them into our very beings. The beauty of listening is that, those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking their words more seriously and discovering their own true selves. Listening is a form of spiritual hospitality by which you invite strangers to become friends, to get to know their inner selves more fully, and even to dare to be silent with you. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Precautionary Statements quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
The most powerful political moments for me come when I feel like my actions are aligned with a certain truth. I can feel it. When I'm talking to a group and I'm saying something truthful, I can feel a power that comes out of those statements that is different than when I'm just being glib or clever. ~ Barack Obama
Precautionary Statements quotes by Barack Obama
I was wrong to exaggerate in statements related to my experiences in the White House and the Royal Family. I am truly sorry for misleading people and misstating the facts. ~ Robert Irvine
Precautionary Statements quotes by Robert Irvine
We have become so accustomed to hearing everyone claim that his product is the best in the world, or the cheapest, that we take all such statements with a grain of salt. ~ Robert Collier
Precautionary Statements quotes by Robert Collier
Note that the best rationalizations are those that have an element of truth. Whether you vote or not will almost certainly have no influence on the outcome of an election. Nor will the amount of carbon you personally put into the atmosphere make a difference in the fate of the planet. And perhaps it really should be up to governments rather than the charities that are soliciting your contributions to feed the hungry and homeless in America or save children around the world from crushing poverty and abuse. But the fact that these statements are true doesn't mean they aren't also rationalizations that you and others use to justify questionable behavior.

This uncomfortable truth is crucial to an understanding of the link between rationalization and evil - an understanding that starts with the awareness that sane people rarely, if ever, act in a truly evil manner unless they can successfully rationalize their actions... [The] process of rationalizing evil deeds committed by whole societies is a collective effort rather than a solely individual enterprise. ~ Thomas Gilovich
Precautionary Statements quotes by Thomas Gilovich
Classical liberalism has been reproached with being too obstinate and not ready enough to compromise. It was because of its inflexibility that it was defeated in its struggle with the nascent anticapitalist parties of all kinds. If it had realized, as these other parties did, the importance of compromise and concession to popular slogans in winning the favor of the masses, it would have been able to preserve at least some of its influence. But it has never bothered to build for itself a party organization and a party machine as the anticapitalist parties have done. It has never attached any importance to political tactics in electoral campaigns and parliamentary proceedings. It has never gone in for scheming opportunism or political bargaining.
This unyielding doctrinairism necessarily brought about the decline of liberalism.
The factual assertions contained in these statements are entirely in accordance with the truth, but to believe that they constitute a reproach against liberalism is to reveal a complete misunderstanding of its essential spirit. The ultimate and most profound of the fundamental insights of liberal thought is that it is ideas that constitute the foundation on which the whole edifice of human social cooperation is Liberalism: A Socio-Economic Exposition
constructed and sustained and that a lasting social structure cannot be built on the basis of false and mistaken ideas. Nothing can serve as a substitute for an ideology that enhances human li ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Precautionary Statements quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
The saying of Protagoras is like the views we have mentioned; he said that man is the measure of all things, meaning simply that that which seems to each man assuredly is. If this is so, it follows that the same thing both is and is not, and is bad and good, and that the contents of all other opposite statements are true, because often a particular thing appears beautiful to some and ugly to others, and that which appears to each man is the measure ~ Aristotle.
Precautionary Statements quotes by Aristotle.
I don't know if the police of naming statements would agree with this. ~ Roman Abramovich
Precautionary Statements quotes by Roman Abramovich
I have never claimed to do the right kind of things and make politically correct statements. ~ Shah Rukh Khan
Precautionary Statements quotes by Shah Rukh Khan
A polarizing mission statement forces the reader to choose between two sides of a line drawn in the sand. Rare is the business owner who has the courage to craft such a statement. ~ Roy H. Williams
Precautionary Statements quotes by Roy H. Williams
Fashion is about owning whatever you're wearing, regardless of if it's a high fashion statement or not. ~ Darren Criss
Precautionary Statements quotes by Darren Criss
To get at the meaning of a statement the logical positivist asks, What would the world be like if it were true? The operationist asks, What would we have to do to come to believe it? For the pragmatist the question is, What would we do if did believe it? ~ Abraham Kaplan
Precautionary Statements quotes by Abraham Kaplan
No precautions, and no precautionary principle, can avoid problems that we do not yet foresee. We need a stance of problem-fixing, not just problem-avoidance. ~ David Deutsch
Precautionary Statements quotes by David Deutsch
I'll never tell a lie. I'll never make a misleading statement. I'll never betray the confidence that any of you had in me. And I'll never avoid a controversial issue. ~ Jimmy Carter
Precautionary Statements quotes by Jimmy Carter
Bits also play a part in logic, that strange blend of philosophy and mathematics for which a primary goal is to determine whether certain statements are true or false. True ~ Charles Petzold
Precautionary Statements quotes by Charles Petzold
It is often wonderful how putting down on paper a clear statement of a case helps one to see, not perhaps the way out, but the way in. ~ A. C. Benson
Precautionary Statements quotes by A. C. Benson
One would have to say "in the end everything is a gag, etc" because everything is infinitely more than just a gag. The same applies to other "is"-statements such as "Laughter is an instant vacation" ~ Alfred Korzybski
Precautionary Statements quotes by Alfred Korzybski
For the next week, every day, listen to the words of your friends or colleagues. Try to hear what others communicate as a need or want. Your goal is to begin to give to others out of things that you already have in your possession. They may just need to borrow something, or you may choose to give them a gift with no strings attached. Listen to statements like this: "I really need _______." "I could really use a _______." "I have been wanting to get ______." Try to think about everyday things in your home that you could give to make a friend's life easier and your life simpler. Match something you have in your possession with a need of a friend. No strings attached. Just let it go. Give it away. Be generous. Give something larger than usual. You will be amazed how others will respond positively and with surprise. Get a taste of what it feels like to give out of your excess this week. ~ Jeff Shinabarger
Precautionary Statements quotes by Jeff Shinabarger
The words kept coming back to him, statement of a mystical truth and a palpable absurdity. ~ George Orwell
Precautionary Statements quotes by George Orwell
[He] had riposted with the proper metaphysical statements, yet he was disturbed. ~ Robert Silverberg
Precautionary Statements quotes by Robert Silverberg
We regard as 'scientific' a method based on deep analysis of facts, theories, and views, presupposing unprejudiced, unfearing open discussion and conclusions. The complexity and diversity of all the phenomena of modern life, the great possibilities and dangers linked with the scientific-technical revolution and with a number of social tendencies demand precisely such an approach, as has been acknowledged in a number of official statements. ~ Andrei Sakharov
Precautionary Statements quotes by Andrei Sakharov
No one statement wrested from its context is a sufficient warrant for actions that plainly controvert other commands. How excellent a thing it would be if the whole Church of Christ had learned that no law of life may be based upon an isolated text. Every false teacher who has divided the Church, has had, "it is written" on which to hang his doctrine. ~ G. Campbell Morgan
Precautionary Statements quotes by G. Campbell Morgan
Statements of opinion are always more constructive in the first person "I" form. Compare these two statements: "You never take my suggestions seriously" and "I feel frustrated that you have not responded to my last four e-mails, which leads me to believe that my suggestions are not that important to you. Is that so?" The former can elicit a quick and defensive "That's not true!" The latter is much harder to deny. One ~ Sheryl Sandberg
Precautionary Statements quotes by Sheryl Sandberg
As people come to understand the environmental damages being caused by carbon and industry pollutants, there is a call for "full-cost accounting." This is an effort to include the adverse environmental costs of manufacturing and other production in the price of producing those items--from the cost of cleanup to the health impacts of carbon pollution. Currently, companies' profit-and-loss statements don't account for these and other costs, which are paid for by us all, and disproportionately by the poor and vulnerable. By failing to pay for the real cost of production, by misrepresenting or ignoring the vast consequences of some of their work, certain businesses and corporations have pursued paths that are at odds with the interests of society. A greater movement toward full-cost accounting is critical if we are going to align business decisions with what is in the best interests of future generations... ~ Cory Booker
