There is nothing so fretting and vexatious, nothing so justly terrible to tyrants, and their tools and abettors, as a free press. ~ Samuel
Picador Press quotes by Samuel
Let me take you,
daughter of the fields,
to the lovers' vineyard.
The wine we press will quench the fires of longing.

You need not fear, my love,
for never have the stars on high
told what they know.
Night's thick mists swirl in these vineyards;
they will veil our secrets. ~ Kahlil Gibran
Picador Press quotes by Kahlil Gibran
Most novels put out by small or corporate presses don't really sell that well - usually a thousand copies or so. Working with a small press, you have to be willing to book reading tours, plan events, make contacts with other small press authors, and find new ways of getting word about your new work out there. ~ Joe Meno
Picador Press quotes by Joe Meno
Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one. ~ A.J. Liebling
Picador Press quotes by A.J. Liebling
As the church, we are in community together trying to fulfill this Great Commission that Jesus left us with. As we gently press into each other, we form one united thing, His church. As we work together, sharing the space God gives us to do His work, we all become shaped a little different. We all become a little more like Him. ~ Jennifer L. Lane
Picador Press quotes by Jennifer L. Lane
Have just been reading in the press the agonizing statement that there are only 4,000,000,000,000 cords of pulp wood left in the world, and that in another fifty years it will be all gone. ~ Stephen Leacock
Picador Press quotes by Stephen Leacock
You used to have to own a radio tower or television tower or printing press. Now all you have to have is access to an Internet cafe or a public library, and you can put your thoughts out in public. ~ Clay Shirky
Picador Press quotes by Clay Shirky
The press doesn't just cover presidential campaigns, they influence them by making arbitrary decisions about who is 'top tier' and merits coverage. ~ Mark McKinnon
Picador Press quotes by Mark McKinnon
In short, whoever does violence to truth or its expression eventually mutilates justice, even though he thinks he is serving it. From this point of view, we shall deny to the very end that a press is true because it is revolutionary; it will be revolutionary only if it is true, and never otherwise. ~ Albert Camus
Picador Press quotes by Albert Camus
Landscapes, heads and naked women are called artistic photography, while photographs of current events are called press photography. ~ Alexander Rodchenko
Picador Press quotes by Alexander Rodchenko
The press still thinks [global warming] is controversial. So they find the 1% of the scientists and put them up as if they're 50% of the research results. You in the public would have no idea that this is basically a done deal and that we're on to other problems, because the journalists are trying to give it a 50/50 story. It's not a 50/50 story. It's not. Period. ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Picador Press quotes by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
When the printing press was invented, it was inspired by the desire to make the Bible accessible to everyone. Today, people of passion who want to share their faith and provide quality entertainment for families are working in one of the most powerful media of our time
the interactive video game. ~ Jay Moore
Picador Press quotes by Jay Moore
She'd just proven she was capable of crazy, or maybe she'd proven she was in love, or perhaps those were the same thing. ~ Asymmetrical Press
Picador Press quotes by Asymmetrical Press
He could not believe that any of them might actually hit somebody. If one did, what a nowhere way to go: killed by accident; slain not as an individual but by sheer statistical probability, by the calculated chance of searching fire, even as he himself might be at any moment. Mathematics! Mathematics! Algebra! Geometry! When 1st and 3d Squads came diving and tumbling back over the tiny crest, Bell was content to throw himself prone, press his cheek to the earth, shut his eyes, and lie there. God, oh, God! Why am I here? Why am I here? After a moment's thought, he decided he better change it to: why are we here. That way, no agency of retribution could exact payment from him for being selfish. ~ James Jones
Picador Press quotes by James Jones
I don't really rate press conferences. It's not as though I leave the room fist-pumping my way down the corridor after a good one. ~ Andy Roddick
Picador Press quotes by Andy Roddick
Then there's the two
of us. This word
is far too short for us, it has only
four letters, too sparse
to fill those deep bare
vacuums between the stars
that press on us with their deafness.
It's not love we don't wish
to fall into, but that fear.
This word is not enough but it will
have to do. It's a single
vowel in this metallic
silence, a mouth that says
O again and again in wonder
and pain, a breath, a finger
grip on a cliffside. You can
hold on or let go. ~ Margaret Atwood
Picador Press quotes by Margaret Atwood
I'm sorry, I don't talk to the press. Even though I think you're cute. ~ Chelsea Clinton
Picador Press quotes by Chelsea Clinton
When we press the thorn to our chest we know, we understand, and still we do it. ~ Colleen McCullough
Picador Press quotes by Colleen McCullough
It wasn't openly talked about very much, in the sense that people said they wanted to beat GB at this or that, but there would however be sidelong comparisons frequently in press commentary. And it was also pretty quickly obvious that no other countries were developing the kind of technological depth of industry as were the US and the UK. ~ Charles R. Morris
Picador Press quotes by Charles R. Morris
... Magic is often a tricky thing. Often it is explainable. People fly through the air in planes and live underwater in submarines. Plants grow within weeks and cities operate and sustain millions of people. A person can talk to practically anyone almost anywhere around the world instantly. People's images are transported by photo in the time it takes to press a button. Dinosaurs seem real, huge apes exist, and other worlds are a movie ticket away. ~ Obert Skye
Picador Press quotes by Obert Skye
His presence, so strange and wonderful, seemed to fill the room and press against me. I didn't think I'd ever sleep again. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Picador Press quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
The popular antidepressant Prozac, which acts by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and probably increasing its availability, has received wide attention; the notion that low serotonin levels might be correlated with a tendency towards violence has surfaced in the popular press. The problem is that it is not the absence or low amount of serotonin per se that "causes" a certain manifestation. Serotonin is part of an exceedingly complicated mechanism which operates at the level of molecules, synapses, local circuits and systems, and in which sociocultural factors, past and present, also intervene powerfully. A satisfactory explanation can arise only from a more comprehensive view of the entire process, in which the relevant variables of a specific problem, such as depression or social adaptability, are analyzed in detail. ~ Antonio R Damasio
Picador Press quotes by Antonio R Damasio
One press account said I was an overnight success. I thought that was the longest night I've ever spent. ~ Sandra Cisneros
Picador Press quotes by Sandra Cisneros
Why do you press harder on a remote-control when you know the battery's dead? ~ Steven Wright
Picador Press quotes by Steven Wright
My back hit the wall. He closed in with an almost terrifying intensity. His muscular body boxed me in.
"Rogan," I warned. In my head, a song played over and over, singing to me in a seductive voice, Rogan, Rogan, Rogan, sex . . . want . . .
"Remember that dream you had?" His voice was low, commanding.
"Rogan!"
The delicious warmth danced around my neck.
"Where I had no clothes?"
The warmth split and slid over me, over the sensitive nerves in the back of my neck, over my collarbone, around my breasts, cupping them and sliding fast to the tips, tightening my nipples, then sliding down, over my stomach, over my sides and butt, down between my legs. It was everywhere at once, and it flowed over me like a cascade of sensual ecstasy, overloading my senses, overriding my reason, and rendering me speechless. I hurtled through it, trying to sort through the sensations and failing. My head spun.
He was right there, masculine, hot, sexy, so incredibly sexy, and I wanted to taste him. I wanted his hands on me. I wanted him to press himself against the aching spot between my legs.
His arms closed around me. His face was too close, his eyes enticing, compelling, excited. "Let's talk about that dream, Nevada."
I was trapped. I had nowhere to go. If he kissed me, I would melt right here. I would moan and beg him, and I would have sex with him right here, in the Galleria, in public.
A spark of pain drained down my arm, driven by pure instinct ~ Ilona Andrews
Picador Press quotes by Ilona Andrews
To turn his head and look at her would have been inconceivable folly. With hands locked together, invisible among the press of bodies, they stared steadily in front of them, and instead of the eyes of the girl, the eyes of the aged prisoner gazed mournfully at Winston out of nests of hair. ~ George Orwell
Picador Press quotes by George Orwell
Later, Aldapuerta spent two years at medical school where he learned the geography of the human body and something of its almost infinite capacity for suffering anddegradation. He took especial delight in tending to the physically incapacitated and wasthankful for the loose coats that "prevented the matrona from spotting the engorged cock that I would occasionally press against the bedridden patient". ~ Jesus I. Aldapuerta
Picador Press quotes by Jesus I. Aldapuerta
I don't like everybody knowing what I'm doing, unless it's related to a movie. I don't like speaking to the press. I never did. ~ Elle Macpherson
Picador Press quotes by Elle Macpherson
Once, I got slaughtered after 'Blade Runner' by Pauline Kael: three pages of slaughter. I was so offended, I would never read any more press. ~ Ridley Scott
Picador Press quotes by Ridley Scott
From an interview with Susie Bright:

SB: You were recently reviewed by the New York Times. How do you think the mainstream media regards sex museums, schools and cultural centers these days? What's their spin versus your own observations?

[Note: Here's the article Susie mentions: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/05/nat... ]

CQ: Lots of people have seen the little NY Times article, which was about an event we did, the Belle Bizarre Bazaar -- a holiday shopping fair where most of the vendors were sex workers selling sexy stuff. Proceeds went to our Exotic Dancers' Education Project, providing dancers with skills that will help them maximize their potential and choices. This event got into the Times despite the worries of its author, a journalist who'd been posted over by her editor. She thought the Times was way too conservative for the likes of us, which may be true, except they now have so many column inches to fill with distracting stuff that isn't about Judith Miller!

The one thing the Times article does not do is present the spectrum of the Center for Sex & Culture's work, especially the academic and serious side of what we do. This, I think, points to the real answer to your question: mainstream media culture remains quite nervous and touchy about sex-related issues, especially those that take sex really seriously. A frivolous take (or a good, juicy, shocking angle) on a sex story works for the mainstream press: a sex-positive ~ Carol Queen
Picador Press quotes by Carol Queen
We have Al Jazeera Arabic news, Al Jazeera English news, of course; we have three sports channels, and we have Al Jazeera Mubasher, which is a live channel that broadcasts live press conferences and symposiums and meetings. And, of course, we have Al Jazeera commentary in Arabic. ~ Wadah Khanfar
Picador Press quotes by Wadah Khanfar
Some little idiot is bound to press the ignite button just to see what happens. ~ Nick Bostrom
