The cultivation of literary pursuits forms the basis of all sciences, and in their perfection consist the reputation and prosperity of kingdoms. ~ Sebastião José De Carvalho E Melo
Marques De Pombal quotes by Sebastião José De Carvalho E Melo
Pausing on the threshold, he looked in, conscious not so much of the few familiar sticks of furniture - the trucklebed, the worn strip of Brussels carpet, the chipped blue-banded ewer and basin, the framed illuminated texts on the walls - as of a perfect hive of abhorrent memories.
That high cupboard in the corner, from which certain bodiless shapes had been wont to issue and stoop at him cowering out of his dreams; the crab-patterned paper that came alive as you stared; the window cold with menacing stars; the mouseholes, the rusty grate - trumpet of every wind that blows - these objects at once lustily shouted at him in their own original tongues.
("Out Of The Deep") ~ Walter De La Mare

The house, the stars, the desert
what gives them their beauty is something that is invisible! ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Marques De Pombal quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Senor Sancho Panza must know that we too have enchanters here that are well disposed to us, and tell us what goes on in the world, plainly and distinctly, without subterfuge or deception; and believe me, Sancho, that agile country lass was and is Dulcinea del Toboso, who is as much enchanted as the mother that bore her; and when we least expect it, we shall see her in her own proper form, and then Sancho will be disabused of the error he is under at present. ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Marques De Pombal quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
The thing that must be preserved in all situations whatever is the reputation of one's character. ~ Madame De Stael
Marques De Pombal quotes by Madame De Stael

Marques De Pombal quotes by Jan De Hartog
Surely I've explained to you before how much I enjoy watching the battle between love and virtue. ~ Vicomte De Valmont
Marques De Pombal quotes by Vicomte De Valmont
This water was indeed a different thing from ordinary nourishment. Its sweetness was born of the walk under the stars, the song of the pulley, the effort of my arms. It was good for the heart, like a present. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Marques De Pombal quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
When I am no longer being copied, I shall know that I am a back number ... the fear of being copied is often the characteristic of the meager imagination. ~ Elsie De Wolfe
Marques De Pombal quotes by Elsie De Wolfe
Massive concentration of financial power, accompanied by the machinations of finance capital , can as easily de-stabilize as stabilize capitalism. ~ David Harvey
Marques De Pombal quotes by David Harvey
Only he can judge of matters great and high whose soul is likewise. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Marques De Pombal quotes by Michel De Montaigne
He was a fat little man with short arms, short legs, a short neck, short nose, short everything in fact. ~ Guy De Maupassant
Marques De Pombal quotes by Guy De Maupassant
Some people might be surprised that 'Rambo's creator has a doctorate in American literature. One of my influences is Henry James, whose major theme is awareness. Whether I'm writing about military personnel, law enforcement, or De Quincey, the persistent theme is paying attention in a hostile world. ~ David Morrell
Marques De Pombal quotes by David Morrell
But it is impossible for anyone to say 'I am sacrificing myself' without feeling bitterness. ~ Simone De Beauvoir
Marques De Pombal quotes by Simone De Beauvoir
First of all, the most important, that is to learn everything good that has survived from other times, and carefully to watch the bad - and throw it out. ~ Ninette De Valois
Marques De Pombal quotes by Ninette De Valois
You shall have your sunset. I shall command it. But I shall wait, according to my science of government, until conditions are favorable. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Marques De Pombal quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Emphasizing the crowd means de-emphasizing individual humans in the design of society, and when you ask people not to be people, they revert to bad, mob-like behaviors. ~ Jaron Lanier
Marques De Pombal quotes by Jaron Lanier
Society is no more indulgent than was the God of Genesis. ~ Honore De Balzac
Marques De Pombal quotes by Honore De Balzac
If you ask anyone, what is morality based on? These are the two factors that always come out: One is reciprocity, ... a sense of fairness, and the other one is empathy and compassion. ~ Frans De Waal
Marques De Pombal quotes by Frans De Waal
I was named Margaret Yvonne. 'Margaret' because my mother was very fond of one of the derivatives of the name. She was fascinated at the time by the movie star Baby Peggy, and I suppose she wanted a Baby Peggy of her own. ~ Yvonne De Carlo
Marques De Pombal quotes by Yvonne De Carlo
The problem is that affirmative action could never really get at the issue of corporate power in the workplace, and so you ended up with the downsizing; you ended up with de-industrializing. You ended up with the marginalizing of working people and working poor people even while affirmative action was taking place, and a new black middle class was expanding. ~ Cornel West
Marques De Pombal quotes by Cornel West
If I try to describe him here, it is so as not to forget him. To forget a friend is sad. Not everyone has had a friend. And if I do forget him, I might become like those grown-ups who no longer care for anything except figures. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Marques De Pombal quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
I was me, I was Flavia. And I loved myself, even if no one else did. ~ Alan Bradley
Marques De Pombal quotes by Alan Bradley
If your men grow weary of the work or balk at obedience, you must bear with them. Get what you can gently from them. True, it is good to be firm in attaining your goal, but use appropriate, attractive, and agreeable means. ~ Vincent De Paul
Marques De Pombal quotes by Vincent De Paul
Have you ever seen a germ?" Aunt Gertrude asked without waiting for Eliza's reply. "Neither have I, yet I have no doubt they exist, because I have seen their effects on the body. Likewise I have never 'seen' love, yet I have witnessed again and again its transformative effect on human beings. ~ Melissa De La Cruz
Marques De Pombal quotes by Melissa De La Cruz
Silence and simplicity obtrude on no one, but are yet two unequaled attractions in woman. ~ Alphonse De Lamartine
Marques De Pombal quotes by Alphonse De Lamartine
This new meta-system is very much in favor of the self, but a self that is based on a proper sense of dignity, not on an inflated ego. A person who dare not admit he is wrong inflates his ego but weakens his self. ~ Edward De Bono
Marques De Pombal quotes by Edward De Bono
I think the difficulty lies in the immeasurable vanity of the human adult, particularly the pedagogical adult,… which does not permit him to recognize as good any tendency in children to fly in the face of his conceptions of a correct human being; to recognize that may be here is something highly desirable, to be encourage, rather than destroyed as pernicious…. [Y]our teacher has usually well-defined conceptions of what men and women have to be. And if a boy is too lively, too noisy, too restless, too curious, to suit the concept, he must be trimmed and subdued. ~ Voltairine De Cleyre
Marques De Pombal quotes by Voltairine De Cleyre
Wisdom is a solid and entire building, of which every piece keeps its place and bears its mark. ~ Michel De Montaigne

Marques De Pombal quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau

I'm Artistry through Fluent and Flowing Poetry in Motion and I'm Letting it Flow..... ~ De Ann "Native" Townes Jr.
Marques De Pombal quotes by De Ann
Here's what's not beautiful about it: from here, you can't see the rust or the cracked paint or whatever, but you can tell what the place really is. You can see how fake it all is. It's not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It's a paper town. I mean, look at it, Q: look at all those culs-de-sac, those streets that turn in on themselves, all the houses that were built to fall apart. All those paper people living in their paper houses, burning the future to stay warm. All the paper kids drinking beer some bum bought for them at the paper convenience store. Everyone demented with the mania of owning things. All the things paper-thin and paper-frail. And all the people, too. I've lived here for eighteen years and I have never once in my life come across anyone who cares about anything that matters. ~ John Green
Marques De Pombal quotes by John Green
I want young people to see me and think you can be feminine and smart and successful, all at the same time. ~ Portia De Rossi
Marques De Pombal quotes by Portia De Rossi

If you do not design the future, someone or something else will design it for you. ~ Edward De Bono
Marques De Pombal quotes by Edward De Bono
In 1934, strongman Fulgencio Batista forced President Grau's resignation. Then in 1940, Grau lost his bid for the Presidency to his adversary Batista. Four years later in 1944, he did win the election and took office for a four-year term starting on October 10th. After Grau won the election and was the President elect, Batista still in office, blatantly attacked the National Treasury, leaving the cupboards bare by the time Grau was actually sworn in as President.
Since Grau and Batista were staunch adversaries, it is highly unlikely that any deal could have been made in 1946 to allow "Lucky" Luciano into Cuba, especially with Luciano having been exiled to Sicily by the United States government that preceding February. Still, Lansky had enough political pull within the Cuban government to prepare for a strong Mafia presence in Havana.
In October of 1946, in an attempt to keep his whereabouts a secret, "Lucky" Luciano covertly boarded a freighter taking him from Naples, Italy, to Caracas, Venezuela. Then Luciano flew south to Rio de Janeiro and returned north to Mexico City. On October 29, 1946, he arranged for a private flight from Mexico City to Camagüey, Cuba, where Meyer Lansky met him. Having the right connections, Luciano passed through Cuban customs unimpeded and was whisked by car to the splendid Grand Hotel.
Luciano, having just arrived in Cuba, was looking forward to setting up operations. Cuba would actually be a better place than the United States fo ~ Hank Bracker
