The Penny Post will do more for the circulation of ideas, for the fostering of domestic affections, for the humanizing of the mass generally, than any other single measure that our national wit can devise. ~ Harriet Martineau
Humanizing quotes by Harriet Martineau
[Author's Note:] It took me four years to research and write this novel, so I began long before talk about migrant caravans and building a wall entered the national zeitgeist. But even then I was frustrated by the tenor of the public discourse surrounding immigration in this country. The conversation always seemed to turn around policy issues, to the absolute exclusion of moral or humanitarian concerns. I was appalled at the way Latino migrants, even five years ago - and it has gotten exponentially worse since then - were characterized within that public discourse. At worst, we perceive them as an invading mob of resource-draining criminals, and at best, a sort of helpless, impoverished, faceless brown mass, clamoring for help at our doorstep. We seldom think of them as our fellow human beings. People with the agency to make their own decisions, people who can contribute to their own bright futures, and to ours, as so many generations of oft-reviled immigrants have done before them. ~ Jeanine Cummins
Humanizing quotes by Jeanine Cummins
I've run into more than anything is people who have a belief that they know who you are. Type-casting happens because people actually write you off. "You are in this box. That's all you are, that's everything you are." It's a very de-humanizing experience. ~ Chris Carmack
Humanizing quotes by Chris Carmack
Educational exchange can turn nations into people, contributing as no other form of communication can to the humanizing of international relations ~ J. William Fulbright
Humanizing quotes by J. William Fulbright
Google did a great job hacking the Web to create search - and then monetizing search with advertising. And Apple did a great job humanizing hardware and software so that formerly daunting computers and applications could become consumer-friendly devices - even a lifestyle brand. ~ Douglas Rushkoff
Humanizing quotes by Douglas Rushkoff
And we really should be considering the moral implications of what we're doing. What kind of a species are we that we treat the rest of life so cheaply? There are those who think that's the destiny of Earth: We arrived, we're humanizing the Earth, and it will be the destiny of Earth for us to wipe humans out and most of the rest of biodiversity. But I think the great majority of thoughtful people consider that a morally wrong position to take, and a very dangerous one. ~ Edward O. Wilson
Humanizing quotes by Edward O. Wilson
Face-to-face conversation is the most human--and humanizing--thing we do. Fully present to one another, we learn to listen. It's where we develop the capacity for empathy. It's where we experience the joy of being heard, of being understood. ~ Cal Newport
Humanizing quotes by Cal Newport
At first, his charisma made it addictive to be around him; but over time I recognized it was also a façade. There was a wounded boy inside of him. He had grown up without a dad, so it made sense to me that he sought constant validation. I found it endearing, humanizing; until he started to indulge that little boy. There were tantrums, there was acting out, there was his need to control things that he no business controlling, but he was still that boy, and I loved him.

So I stayed thinking it would get better, and then one morning I woke up to one of life's clarion calls. I deserved better than this. That night I said I was leaving. ~ Steven Rowley
Humanizing quotes by Steven Rowley
My godfather sad that story was abut taking the chaotic jigsaw of life, making it into a picture and putting a frame around it so that we could look at it, have control over it. Story and art are the humanizing elements of us. ~ Emma Thompson
Humanizing quotes by Emma Thompson
Education and study, and the favours of the muses, confer no greater benefit on those that seek them than these humanizing and civilizing lessons, which teach our natural qualities to submit to the limitations prescribed by reason, and to avoid the wildness of extremes. ~ Plutarch
Humanizing quotes by Plutarch
Build roads never seen before. Build bridges never existed before. Build a society never lived before. It is all in your hands now. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Humanizing quotes by Abhijit Naskar
Pets are humanizing. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve and nurture and care for all life. ~ James Cromwell
Humanizing quotes by James Cromwell
The basic problem is not political, it is a-political and human. One of the most important things to do is to keep cutting deliberately through political lines and barriers and emphasizing the fact that these are largely fabrications and that there is another dimension, a genuine reality, totally opposed to the fictions of politics: the human dimension which politics pretend to arrogate entirely to themselves. This is the necessary first step along the long way toward the perhaps impossible task of purifying, humanizing and somehow illuminating politics themselves. ~ Thomas Merton
Humanizing quotes by Thomas Merton
Here's what worries me the most: I came to Liberty to humanize people. Because humanizing people is good, right? But what about people with reprehensible views? Do they deserve to be humanized? By giving Jerry Falwell's moral universe a fair look, am I putting myself in his shoes? Or am I really just validating his worldview? What's the difference between what I'm doing and certain Iranian presidents who want to "do more research" into the Holocaust? Where's the limit to open-mindedness? ~ Kevin Roose
Humanizing quotes by Kevin Roose
The influences that have lifted the race to a higher moral level are education, freedom, leisure, the humanizing tendency of a better-supplied and more interesting life. In a word, science and liberalism ... have accomplished the very things for which religion claims the credit. ~ E. Haldeman-Julius
Humanizing quotes by E. Haldeman-Julius
extraordinary series of delays is not my fault. I did my possible.' The fat man sighed, 'Very sad.' 'And the pestiferous absurdity of his talk,' continued the other; 'he bothered me enough when he was here. "Each station should be like a beacon on the road towards better things, a center for trade of course, but also for humanizing, improving, instructing." Conceive you - that ass! And he wants to be manager! No, it's - ' Here he got choked by excessive indignation, and I lifted my head the least ~ Joseph Conrad
Humanizing quotes by Joseph Conrad
Rather than humanizing technology, modern man prefers to technify man. ~ Nicolas Gomez Davila
Humanizing quotes by Nicolas Gomez Davila
I reach this conclusion: humanizing is not the same as sympathizing. You can peel a stereotype off a person and not see a beautiful human being underneath. In fact, humanity can be very ugly. ~ Kevin Roose
Humanizing quotes by Kevin Roose
When people have points of reference that are humanizing, that demystifies difference. ~ Laverne Cox
Humanizing quotes by Laverne Cox
Love in truth-caritas in veritate-is a great challenge for the Church in a world that is becoming progressively and pervasively globalized. The risk for our time is that the de facto interdependence of people and nations is not matched by ethical interaction of consciences and minds that would give rise to truly human development. Only in charity, illumined by the light of reason and faith, is it possible to pursue development goals that possess a more humane and humanizing value. ~ Pope Benedict XVI
Humanizing quotes by Pope Benedict XVI
Humanizing good people is kind of boring and I don't really see the value in it ... humanizing tricky characters is exhilarating, and making audience films out of indie subjects excites me. ~ Jason Reitman
Humanizing quotes by Jason Reitman
I love the idea that more people would read short fiction. I think it's such a humanizing form. It softens the boundaries between people. ~ George Saunders
Humanizing quotes by George Saunders
For the sake of humanity it is devoutly to be wished that the manly employment of agriculture and the humanizing benefits of commerce would supersede the waste of war and the rage of conquest; and the swords might be turned into ploughshares, the spears into pruning-hooks, and as the Scripture expresses it, the nations learn war no more. ~ George Washington
Humanizing quotes by George Washington
Jesus was in the business of re-humanizing all of creation. ~ Nathan Albert
Humanizing quotes by Nathan Albert
And I *know* I wrote in the above that I hate biographies and reviews that focus on the psychological, surface detail, especially when they pertain to women writers, because I think it's really about the cult of the personality, which is essentially problematic, and I think simplistically psychologizing which biographies are so wont to do is really problematic, and dangerous, especially when dealing with complicated women who just by being writers at a certain time and age were labelled as nonconformist, or worse, hysterical or ill or crazy, and I think branding these women as femme fatales is all so often done. And I know in a way I'm contributing to this by posting their bad-ass photos, except hopefully I am humanizing them and thinking of them as complicated selves and intellects AND CELEBRATING THEM AS WRITERS as opposed to straight-up objectifying. One particular review long ago in Poetry that really got my goat was when Brian Phillips used Gertrude Stein's line about Djuna Barnes having nice ankles as an opener in a review of her poetry, and to my mind it was meant to be entirely dismissive, as of course, Stein was being as well. Stein was many important revolutionary things to literature, but a champion of her fellow women writers she was not. They published my letter, but then let the guy write a reply and scurry to the library and actually read Nightwood, one of my all-time, all-times, and Francis Bacon's too, there's another anecdote. And it's burned in my brain his ~ Kate Zambreno
Humanizing quotes by Kate Zambreno
Unfortunately, our over-emphasis on the male as oppressor often obscures the fact that men too are victimized. To be an oppressor is dehumanizing and anti-human in nature, as it is to be a victim. Patriarchy forces fathers to act as monsters, encourages husbands and lovers to be rapists in disguise; it teaches our blood brothers to feel ashamed that they care for us, and denies all men the emotional life that would act as a humanizing, self-affirming force in their lives. ~ Bell Hooks
Humanizing quotes by Bell Hooks
I believe that the experience of love is the most human and humanizing act that it is given to man to enjoy and that it, like reason, makes no sense if conceived in a partial way. ~ Erich Fromm
Humanizing quotes by Erich Fromm
I believe that when I die I shall rot, and nothing of my ego will survive. I am not young and I love life. But I should scorn to shiver with terror at the thought of annihilation. Happiness is nonetheless true happiness because it must come to an end, nor do thought and love lose their value because they are not everlasting. Many a man has borne himself proudly on the scaffold; surely the same pride should teach us to think truly about man's place in the world. Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cosy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigour, and the great spaces have a splendour of their own. ~ Bertrand Russell
Humanizing quotes by Bertrand Russell
He was completely interested in humanizing technology. ~ Leander Kahney
Humanizing quotes by Leander Kahney
Culture is about humanizing people. You look at the African-American civil rights movement, you look at the LGBT rights movement - the culture changed before the politics did. ~ Jose Antonio Vargas
Humanizing quotes by Jose Antonio Vargas
Motherhood has a very humanizing effect. Everything gets reduced to essentials. ~ Meryl Streep
Humanizing quotes by Meryl Streep
I think in many ways what my films are about is that search for my grandpa's dentures: for that humanizing narrative that bridges the gap between "us" and "them" to arrive at a "we." ~ Brian Lindstrom
Humanizing quotes by Brian Lindstrom
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own. ~ Bertrand Russell
Humanizing quotes by Bertrand Russell
If there is to be any permanent improvement in man and any better social order, it must come mainly from the education and humanizing of man. ~ Clarence Darrow
Humanizing quotes by Clarence Darrow
In a properly automated and educated world, then, machines may prove to be the true humanizing influence. It may be that machines will do the work that makes life possible and that human beings will do all the other things that make life pleasant and worthwhile ~ Isaac Asimov
Humanizing quotes by Isaac Asimov
