The spandrels of San Marco and the Panglossian Paradigm. ~ Stephen Jay Gould
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Stephen Jay Gould
He talked a lot about girls, too. His brother, Sam Houston Johnson, recalls that more than once, when he visited his brother at San Marcos, Lyndon, coming back into the room naked after a shower, would take his penis in his hand, and say: "Well, I've gotta take ol' Jumbo here and give him some exercise. I wonder who I'll fuck tonight. ~ Robert A. Caro
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Robert A. Caro
As to whether Marcos is gay: Marcos is gay in San Francisco, black in South Africa, an Asian in Europe, a Chicano in San Ysidro, an anarchist in Spain, a Palestinian in Israel, a Mayan Indian in the streets of San Cristobal, ... a Jew in Germany, a Gypsy in Poland, a Mohawk in Quebec, a pacifist in Bosnia, a single woman on the Metro at 10pm, a peasant without land, a gang member in the slums, an unemployed worker, an unhappy student and, of course, a Zapatista in the mountains. ~ Subcomandante Marcos
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Subcomandante Marcos
Funny word, that: "fault." As in San Andreas. The crack through which one world intersects with the next, or vice versa. This crack in my head, still gaping open--a magnet, a haematoma, a dark and spreading pool. A cigarette-burn hole in the fabric of everything I see, or hear, or do; right in the middle, impossible to mend, impossible to disguise. Impossible to ignore. ~ Gemma Files
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Gemma Files
Love is a Christian word, Anjin-san. Love is a Christian thought, a Christian ideal. We have no word for 'love' as I understand you to mean it. Duty, loyalty, honor, respect, desire, those words and thoughts are what we have, all that we need. ~ James Clavell
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by James Clavell
She is my girlfriend, I can do whatever I want to her. In fact, I'm going to take her home and fuck her from here to eternity, how about that? ~ Ani San
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Ani San
The meeting [in San Antonio of the National Women's Political Caucus] featured a cattle show at which a herd of Democratic candidates- Glenn, Cranston, Mondale, Hart, and Hollings- pantingly pantomined their fidelity to feminism, stopping just short of a pledge to use nuclear weapons against any states that omit to ratify the Equal Right Amendment. ~ Daniel Seligman
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Daniel Seligman
At the end of the day I have many answers for it. It has to do with my mom, who was an extraordinary woman, and a great feminist. It has to do with the people in my life. It has to do with a lot of different things, but
I don't know! Because I'm not just writing from the female characters for other people. I have a desire to see them in our culture
that was not met for most of my childhood. Except occasionally by James Cameron.
[From the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, in response to being asked why he writes strong female characters.] ~ Joss Whedon
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Joss Whedon
I was born and raise din San Francisco, which explains my willingness to stay in a city that's historically been full of people who insist on trying to kill me at the slightest provocation. ~ Seanan McGuire
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Seanan McGuire
Venice appeared to me as in a recurring dream, a place once visited and now fixed in memory like images on a photographer's plates so that my return was akin to turning the leaves of a portfolio: a scene of the gondolas moored by the railway station; the Grand Canal in twilight; the Rialto bridge; the Piazza San Marco; the shimmering, rippling wonderland; the bustling water traffic; the fish market; the Lido beach and boardwalk; Teeny in the launch; the singing, gesturing gondoliers; the bourgeois tourists drinking coffee at Florian's; the importunate beggars; the drowned girl's ghost haunting the Bridge of Sighs; the pigeons, mosquitoes and fetor of decay. ~ Gary Inbinder
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Gary Inbinder
I was born in San Francisco. I was raised in Oakland, so I'm, like, super Bay Area born, and, you know, it's just really multicultural up there, and there's a lot of subcultures just from, like, anything, like from rockabilly to, like, crazy punk scenes to, you know, a huge rap scene, and there's just all kinds of things you can do out there. ~ Kreayshawn
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Kreayshawn
I'm like Robin Hood. I rob the rich to make these projects come alive ... not really rob. It's done with a smile. ~ Imelda Marcos
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Imelda Marcos
I had these glorified ideas about San Francisco and its drug culture - I thought inspiration would just hit me and I would get these San Francisco drugs in my system and all of a sudden an amazing record would come out. But that's not really what happened at all. ~ Zachary Cole Smith
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Zachary Cole Smith
Matsuda-kun: Wow ... Your father died on duty and you see his memento as an amulet ...
Satou-san: Hey, give it back! You want to tell me to forget it so I can move on, right?
Matsuda-kun: No ... You don't need to forget everything ...
Satou-san: Eh?
Matsuda-kun: Wherher you can move on or not is totally up to you. If you forget your father her could ... really die, right? ~ Gosho Aoyama
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Gosho Aoyama
How can you love me if you don't even know me?" He lifted my arms around his neck and placed his hands on the small of my back.
"I know you, Jade. You're witty and stubborn, like when you wanted to get rid of me at the bar in San Diego. And you're sweet and caring, like when you talked to my mother at the hospital. And you can drink like a sailor. " He chuckled. "And you hardly ever blush, but when you do it's like the sunshine." Then, he whispered in my ear with a husky voice, "And you make love with your soul."
Peter gave my earlobe a quick nibble. "I couldn't care less about energy. It might have brought us together, but I only care about you. I want to spend the rest of my days with you; no matter if it'll be ten or ten thousand."
Despite myself, I felt my eyes burn from tears I wasn't ready to shed.
Still, I couldn't say it.
"Peter..." I kissed him with all the tenderness I found in my heart and said, "the tub is about to
spill."
"Oh, shit." He jerked away from me, turned the water off and unplugged the tub, then hugged
me again with wet hands. "All we need is time, Jade. You'll see this love is real. ~ Denyse Cohen
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Denyse Cohen
Assuming the chairmanship of ASEAN isn't going to do anything about improving the lives of people. ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
Every second I'm with you, I feel like a better person. You make me believe it's possible that I can move on from every mistake I've ever made and live in your world." - HEW ~ Michelle Warren
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Michelle Warren
I live in San Francisco, I live in Provincetown. They're all the same, apart from Baltimore. Baltimore's the only cheap place left. ~ John Waters
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by John Waters

How was I supposed to know
that Berkeley was not
a neighborhood of San Francisco? ~ Bucky Sinister
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Bucky Sinister
When you decide to follow a certain path, you should follow it to the end and not be diverted from it for personal reasons. ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
I strongly believe that marriage should be defined as between a man and a woman. I am troubled by activist judges who are defining marriage. I have watched carefully what's happened in San Francisco, where licenses were being issued even though the law states otherwise. I have consistently stated that if-I'll support law to protect marriage between a man and a woman. And obviously these events are influencing my decision. ~ George W. Bush
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by George W. Bush
Perspective shifted on why it must 'hurt to heal', and a series of questions kept coming to mind. I found myself wondering if these medicines always 'hurt', or do they hurt so much now to show us how separate we are from nature? Perhaps these 'revelations in pain' are necessary in order for a personal apocalpyse to occur so you may have a shift in perception, and a greater understanding of your role in the whole? To realize that we are not foreign from nature, nature is where we come from and where we return to. ~ Jennifer Sodini
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Jennifer Sodini
I believe in giving back. ~ Laura San Giacomo
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Laura San Giacomo
My Camille," he said, his voice as soft and powerful as a blow from a bellows, "did you believe you'd sail with me forever?"
She wanted to say yes, just to be able to say yes. But she shook her head.
"This is all my fault," her father mumbled.
Camille sat back in the chaise longue and curled her legs beneath her. "What is?"
"I shouldn't have let you accompany me to sea all these years. I should have sent you to a proper finishing school, given you a chance to find your place here in San Francisco. Instead, I was selfish and wanted you with me every moment."
Camille relaxed her shoulders. "I don't mind your selfishness, Father."
He sent her a grin, but it was the one he used when there was a caveat attached.
"It did have to end sometime, Camille. True ladies don't belong on merchant ships, and it's high time you were a lady instead of a child."
He was right, though she wished he weren't. "True ladies" didn't sail on ships. Their palms weren't blistered from hauling line, the bridges of their noses and apples of their cheeks weren't bronzed from the sun, and they most certainly didn't associate with sailors.
Camille sighed. "Being a true lady sounds achingly dull. ~ Angie Frazier
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Angie Frazier
In Positano, I like the San Pietro Hotel, which is run by a friend whose family has owned the hotel for more than 100 years. ~ Ivana Trump
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Ivana Trump
I am all of my characters, but none of them in particular. I'm an expat in San Miguel de Allende, the community I write about.
My characters are never black and white--I'm interested in shades of gray and the way people rationalize the bad acts they commit. ~ John Scherber
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by John Scherber
At this very moment we are breathing the same air that once was Marco Polo's last breath. And we're also breathing the same air that was Mozart's first breath as a baby.
you're also breathing air that's probably been queefed by Mata Hari, Cleopatra and Marilyn Monroe, which either way you look at it is pretty cool.
So, while we're breathing in the same molecules as Jesus, we're also breathing in the same air as Pontius Pilot, Attila the Hun and an inmate on Death Row in San Quentin State Prison. We are linked to every other life form that has ever been on this planet because we literally breathe the same air. ~ Karl Wiggins
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Karl Wiggins
I met a guy, very exotic to me - he was blonde with blue eyes - and I just had a fling that turned out to be love. I moved to San Francisco to spend a week with him and get him out of my system; I'm still here 26 years later. ~ Isabel Allende
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Isabel Allende
I have never been a material girl. My father always told me never to love anything that cannot love you back. ~ Imelda Marcos
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Imelda Marcos
Major General Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood was an army officer and physician, born October 9, 1860 in Winchester, New Hampshire. His first assignment was in 1886 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona where he fought in the last campaign against the fierce Apache warrior Geronimo. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches 100 miles through hostile territory and was promoted to the rank of Captain, commanding a detachment of the 8th Infantry.

From 1887 to 1898, he served as a medical officer in a number of positions, the last of which was as the personal physician to President William McKinley. In 1898 at the beginning of the war with Spain, he was given command of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry. The regiment was soon to be known as the "Rough Riders." Wood lead his men on the famous charge up San Juan Hill and was given a field promotion to brigadier general.

In 1898 he was appointed the Military Governor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1920, as a retired Major General, Wood ran as the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, losing to Warren Harding. In 1921 following his defeat, General Wood accepted the post of Governor General of the Philippines. He held this position from 1921 to 1927, when he died of a brain tumor in Boston, on 7 August 1927, at 66 years of age after which he was buried, with full honors, in Arlington National Cemetery. ~ Hank Bracker
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Hank Bracker
Lily liked the fog, and didn't even mind the cold wind. She reckoned that Ocean Beach, the dunes there, and the Sunset were the closest San Francisco was going to come to the foreboding, wind-swept moors of England, where she had aspired to suffer romance and heartache when she was a kid. The foghorn, however, rather than a lonesome lament that conjured images of Heathcliff's dark figure, waiting with clenched jaw on the moor for her to bring light and warmth into his life, sounded like a distressed moose tied up in her neighbor's garage, having his nut sack singed with jumper cables at a precise interval calculated to keep her from falling asleep. Which, in turn, made her think of what complete douche bags people could be when all you wanted to do was borrow a defibrillator. Then she was awake and angry. ~ Christopher Moore
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Christopher Moore
But of course there's no logic to San Francisco generally, a city built with putty and pipe cleaners, rubber cement and colored construction paper. It's the work of fairies, elves, happy children with new crayons ~ Dave Eggers
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Dave Eggers
Paul R. Linde in his 1994 book, Of Spirits and Madness: An American Psychiatrist in Africa. "Major mental illness cuts across all cultures," Linde writes. "Amazingly enough, or maybe not, acutely psychotic people in Zimbabwe appear very similar to those in San Francisco. . . . They suffer from disorganized thoughts, delusions, and hallucinations. The content of the symptoms, however, is very much different . . . Zimbabweans do not report hearing auditory hallucinations of Jesus Christ, rather they report hearing those of their ancestor spirits. They are not paranoid about the FBI, rather they are paranoid about witches and sorcerers."1 ~ Dick Russell
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Dick Russell
Nineteen eighty is almost here, thank God. the hippies are getting old, they blew their brains on acid and now they're begging on street corners all over San Francisco. Their hair is tangled and their bare feet are thick and gray as shoes. We're sick of them. ~ Jennifer Egan
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Jennifer Egan
This was the way I was brought up to think of politics, that politics was to do with ethics, it was to do with responsibility, it was to do with service, so I think I was conditioned to think like that, and I'm too old to change now. ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
Dorsets San Marcos quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
Some of these beginners, too, make little of their faults, and at other times become over-sad when they see themselves fall into them, thinking themselves to have been saints already; and thus they become angry and impatient with themselves, which is another imperfection. Often they beseech God, with great yearnings, that He will take from them their imperfections and faults, but they do this that they may find themselves at peace, and may not be troubled by them, rather than for God's sake; not realizing that, if He should take their imperfections from them, they would probably become prouder and more presumptuous still. They dislike praising others and love to be praised themselves; sometimes they seek out such praise. Herein they are like the foolish virgins, who, when their lamps could not be lit, sought oil from others. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
