The amphibious landing of U.S. Marines on September 1950 at Inchon, on the west coast of Korea, was one of the most audacious and spectacularly successful amphibious landings in all naval history. ~ Bernard Brodie
Us Army quotes by Bernard Brodie
Major General Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood was an army officer and physician, born October 9, 1860 in Winchester, New Hampshire. His first assignment was in 1886 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona where he fought in the last campaign against the fierce Apache warrior Geronimo. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches 100 miles through hostile territory and was promoted to the rank of Captain, commanding a detachment of the 8th Infantry.

From 1887 to 1898, he served as a medical officer in a number of positions, the last of which was as the personal physician to President William McKinley. In 1898 at the beginning of the war with Spain, he was given command of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry. The regiment was soon to be known as the "Rough Riders." Wood lead his men on the famous charge up San Juan Hill and was given a field promotion to brigadier general.

In 1898 he was appointed the Military Governor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1920, as a retired Major General, Wood ran as the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, losing to Warren Harding. In 1921 following his defeat, General Wood accepted the post of Governor General of the Philippines. He held this position from 1921 to 1927, when he died of a brain tumor in Boston, on 7 August 1927, at 66 years of age after which he was buried, with full honors, in Arlington National Cemetery. ~ Hank Bracker
Us Army quotes by Hank Bracker
Success in battle is not a function of how many show up, but who they are. ~ Robert H. Barrow
Us Army quotes by Robert H. Barrow
The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist. ~ Thomas Friedman
Us Army quotes by Thomas Friedman
The US Army has announced that although it is true they performed mind-destroying drug tests on hundreds of soldiers in the 1960s, none of the victims have been promoted beyond the rank of lieutenant colonel. ~ George Carlin
Us Army quotes by George Carlin
For educated Americans like Joseph Ellis, Vietnam is a special hang-up. I am an Englishman of exactly the Vietnam generation, a couple of years younger than Ellis; indeed, for reasons too complicated to explain here, I was nearly drafted into the US army in 1965. I know many Americans of my own age and, as much to the point, my own class - journalists, publishers, lawyers. And I don't think I know one who served in Vietnam. ~ Geoffrey Wheatcroft
Us Army quotes by Geoffrey Wheatcroft
Discipline is the soul of an army. ~ George Washington
Us Army quotes by George Washington
Come on boys! Give them the cold steel! Who will follow me? ~ Lewis Armistead
Us Army quotes by Lewis Armistead
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. (US Army Combat Engineers saying.) ~ Brian J. Clarke
Us Army quotes by Brian J. Clarke
Wherever you are or whatever your job, don't be confused or diverted by false priorities. We have only one mission to perform-that is to fight and win. And, we must do it better than anyone else in the world. ~ Leslie E. Brown
Us Army quotes by Leslie E. Brown
Well, does he still have his fingernails? Making inquiries while negotiating the release of a US Army pilot from North Korea, in Time. ~ Bill Richardson
Us Army quotes by Bill Richardson
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he to day that sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother. ~ William Shakespeare
Us Army quotes by William Shakespeare
Nothing - not even the US Army - more threatens the future of a democratic, pluralistic and (dare we wish, secular) Iraq than the political ascendancy of Islamic fascists like Al Sadr. ~ Marc Cooper
Us Army quotes by Marc Cooper
The northern soldiers are just men," Hal told the men in his command. "And women," he amended. "When you cut them, they bleed, just like us. ~ Cinda Williams Chima
Us Army quotes by Cinda Williams Chima
In many places, the past fifteen years have been a time of economic turmoil and widening disparities. Anger and resentment are high. And yet economic policies that might address these concerns seem nearly impossible to enact. Instead of the seeds of reform, we are given the yoke of misdirection. We are told to forget the sources of our discontent because something more important is at stake: the fate of our civilization.

Yet what are these civilizations, these notions of Muslim-ness, Western-ness, European-ness, American-ness, that attempt to describe where, and with whom, we belong? They are illusions: arbitrarily drawn constructs with porous, brittle, and overlapping borders. To what civilization does a Syrian atheist belong? A Muslim soldier in the US army? A Chinese professor in Germany? A lesbian fashion designer in Nigeria? After how many decades of US citizenship does a Spanish-speaking Honduran-born couple, with two generations of American children and grandchildren descended from them, cease to belong to a Latin American civilization and take their place in an American one?

Civilizations are illusions, but these illusions are pervasive, dangerous, and powerful. They contribute to globalization's brutality. They allow us, for example, to say that we believe in global free markets and, in the same breath, to discount as impossible the global free movement of labor; to claim that we believe in democracy and human equality, and yet to stymie the cre ~ Mohsin Hamid
Us Army quotes by Mohsin Hamid
In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten then he who continues the attack wins. ~ Ulysses S. Grant
Us Army quotes by Ulysses S. Grant
I want people to see the truth ... regardless of who they are ...
because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a
public. ~ Chelsea Manning
Us Army quotes by Chelsea Manning
but being over's no problemo, it's the getting there that's a bitch or a boor or a bother, to that small apresbellum, the birth of the universe in reverse, the door unshut after the party's over and the guests uncoupled on the floor. In Las Vegas in the '50s, there were parties on hotel-tops, parties that went on all night long, everyone swinging to the sounds of some sassy swinging-hair'd sister backed by the brassy cool combo, and the show-stopper was the morning's nuclear test, sponsored by the US Army, the white light skirled across the shar Nevada desert, blotting the sun, they called them dawn parties because they done broke the day. ~ Vanessa Place
Us Army quotes by Vanessa Place
The Army of Northern Virginia was never defeated. It merely wore itself out whipping the enemy. ~ Jubal Early
Us Army quotes by Jubal Early
Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance ~ U.S. Army
Us Army quotes by U.S. Army
My palms began sweating as I took in the enormous, opulent study. Tomes lined each wall like the soldiers of a silent army, and couches, desks, and rich rugs were scattered throughout the room. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Us Army quotes by Sarah J. Maas
To keep your actions and your plans secret always has been a very good thing .. Marcus Crassus said to one who asked him when he was going to move the army: 'Do you believe that you will be the only one not to hear the trumpet? ~ Niccolo Machiavelli
Us Army quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
The Halifax area has long played a major role in Canada's military operations, being the port of departure for convoys, naval task forces and army units over the past 100 years or so. ~ Alex Morrison
Us Army quotes by Alex Morrison
I do not think that any self-respecting radical in history would have considered advocating people's rights to get married, join the Army, and earn a living as a terribly inspiring revolutionary platform. ~ Barney Frank
Us Army quotes by Barney Frank
What I really learned in the army was how to be a pacifist. ~ Utah Phillips
Us Army quotes by Utah Phillips
No one wanted the job. What had seemed one of the least challenging tasks facing Franklin D. Roosevelt as newly elected president had, by June 1933, become one of the most intransigent. As ambas-sadorial posts went, Berlin should have been a plum - not London or Paris, surely, but still one of the great capitals of Europe, and at the center of a country going through revolutionary change under the leadership of its newly appointed chancellor, Adolf Hitler. Depending on one's point of view, Germany was experiencing a great revival or a savage darkening. Upon Hitler's ascent, the country had undergone a brutal spasm of state- condoned violence. Hitler's brown- shirted paramilitary army, the Sturmabteilung, or SA - the Storm Troopers - had gone wild, arresting, beating, and in some cases murdering communists, socialists, and Jews. Storm Troopers established impromptu prisons and torture stations in basements, sheds, and other structures. Berlin alone had fi fty of these so- called bunkers. Tens of thousands of people were arrested and placed in "protective custody" - Schutzhaft - a risible euphemism. An esti-mated fi ve hundred to seven hundred prisoners died in custody; others endured "mock drownings and hangings," according to a police affi davit. One prison near Tempelhof Airport became especially no-torious: Columbia House, not to be confused with a sleekly modern new building at the heart of Berlin called Columbus House. The up-heaval prompted one Jewish leader, Rabbi Step ~ Erik Larson
Us Army quotes by Erik Larson
We're your legal advisors.'
Which they weren't, obviously. Reacher knew that. Army lawyers don't travel in pairs and breathe through their mouths. ~ Lee Child
Us Army quotes by Lee Child
I turned toward his army. It was now roughly one hundred and ninety-nine to one. I did the natural thing. I charged them. ~ Rick Riordan
Us Army quotes by Rick Riordan
It would be as if the Navy Seals defected from the U.S. Army to help the Crips take over Los Angeles
and succeeded. ~ Johann Hari
Us Army quotes by Johann Hari
Epaminondas himself fell in the moment of victory, and in his death contributed not the least of his lessons to subsequent generations-by an exceptionally dramatic and convincing proof that an army and a state succumb quickest to paralysis of the brain. ~ B.H. Liddell Hart
Us Army quotes by B.H. Liddell Hart
I went to school on a military base in Germany. I got a lot of my clothes at the army surplus store. ~ Debby Ryan
Us Army quotes by Debby Ryan
They may attack me with an army of six hundred syllogisms; and if I do not recant, they will proclaim me a heretic. ~ Desiderius Erasmus
Us Army quotes by Desiderius Erasmus
A hand from Washington will be stretched out and placed upon every man's business; the eye of the federal inspector will be in every man's counting house ... The law will of necessity have Indus[tr]ial features, it will provide penalties, it will create complicated machinery. Under it, men will be hauled into courts distant from their homes. Heavy fines imposed by distant and unfamiliar tribunals will constantly menace the taxpayer. An army of federal inspectors, spies, and detectives will descend upon the state. ~ Richard E. Byrd
Us Army quotes by Richard E. Byrd
The Army, and the war, owned him – body and soul. Fin never stood a chance. ~ Kate McCarthy
Us Army quotes by Kate McCarthy
Every friend of freedom must be as revolted as I am by the prospect of turning the United States into an armed camp, by the vision of jails filled with casual drug users and of an army of enforcers empowered to invade the liberty of citizens on slight evidence. ~ Milton Friedman
Us Army quotes by Milton Friedman
He doesn't stop talking for most of the three-hour flight about his time in "'Nam." Finally the conversation slows, and I ask him what he's done since leaving the army.

He sums it up in three words: "I'm in insurance."

And that's it. That's all he has to say about the following forty years.

I think I may be in a similar situation with the whole marriage bit. Three words: "I got married. ~ Rick Springfield
Us Army quotes by Rick Springfield
My mother was born in Latvia. She and most of her family fled from the capital city of Riga in 1944 with the final approach of the Soviet army. ~ Amity Gaige
Us Army quotes by Amity Gaige
Chaos is indeed the normal state of affairs on the battleground, and no army has figured out a way to plan effectively for, let alone alleviate, the so-called fog of war. When the military is confronted with the fratricidal carnage that predictably results, denial and dissembling are its time-honored responses of first resort. ~ Jon Krakauer
Us Army quotes by Jon Krakauer
Without music, we wouldn't have an Army. ~ Robert E.Lee
Us Army quotes by Robert E.Lee
A constant stream of 'free' money is a perfect way to keep an inefficient or simply bad government in power. As aid flows in, there is nothing more for the government to do - it doesn't need to raise taxes, and as long as it pays the army, it doesn't have to take account of its disgruntled citizens. ~ Dambisa Moyo
Us Army quotes by Dambisa Moyo
An army of sheep led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by a sheep. ~ Alexander The Great
Us Army quotes by Alexander The Great
Fuck it, I thought. As Don Rumsfeld once said, You go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish you had. ~ Avi Steinberg
Us Army quotes by Avi Steinberg
The men digging in on both sides of me cursed the stench and the mud. I began moving the heavy, sticky clay mud with my entrenching shovel to shape out the extent of the foxhole before digging deeper. Each shovelful had to be knocked off the spade, because it stuck like glue. I was thoroughly exhausted and thought my strength wouldn't last from one sticky shovelful to the next.
Kneeling on the mud, I had dug the hole no more than six or eight inches deep when the odor of rotting flesh got worse. There was nothing to do but continue to dig, so I closed up my mouth and inhaled with short shallow breaths. Another spadeful of soil out of the hole released a mass of wriggling maggots that came welling up as though those beneath were pushing them out. I cursed and told the NCO as he came by what a mess I was digging into.
'You heard him, he said put the holes five yards apart.'
In disgust, I drove the spade into the soil, scooped out the insects, and threw them down the front of the ridge. The next stroke of the spade unearthed buttons and scraps of cloth from a Japanese army jacket in the mud - and another mass of maggots. I kept on doggedly. With the next thrust, metal hit the breastbone of a rotting Japanese corpse. I gazed down in horror and disbelief as the metal scraped a clean track through the mud along the dirty whitish bone and cartilage with ribs attached. The shoved skidded into the rotting abdomen with a squishing sound. The odor nearly overwhelmed me as ~ Eugene B. Sledge
Us Army quotes by Eugene B. Sledge
Browns seek knowledge, Blues meddle in causes, and Whites consider the questions of truth with implacable logic. We all do some of it all, of course. But to be Green means to stand ready. In the Trolloc Wars, we were often called the Battle Ajah. All Aes Sedai helped where and when they could, but the Green Ajah alone was always with the armies, in almost every battle. We were the counter to the dreadlords. The Battle Ajah. And now we stand ready, for the Trollocs to come south again, for Tarmon Gai'don. the Last Battle. We will be there. That is what it means to be Green. -Alanna ~ Robert Jordan
Us Army quotes by Robert Jordan
They'd come to the Ice Court scurrying like rats. Live or die, they were going out like an army. ~ Leigh Bardugo
Us Army quotes by Leigh Bardugo
We are an army of dreamers, and that's why we're invincible. ~ Subcomandante Marcos
Us Army quotes by Subcomandante Marcos
The Russians would lose 305,000 troops in the last 42 miles approaching Berlin
about the number of American army soldiers who died in all of World War II. Of the 125,000 of Berlin's civilians who died in the Russian attack, 6,400 were suicides; ~ Andrei Cherny
Us Army quotes by Andrei Cherny
Well, you not the first by a long shot. An integrated army is integrated misery. You all go fight, come back, they treat you like dogs. Change that. They treat dogs better. ~ Toni Morrison
Us Army quotes by Toni Morrison
That which the enemy meant to destroy through trafficking, I will raise up as an unstoppable army in the days ahead, for that generation will be My generation! I call you, 'My Army that is Unstoppable!' I call you, 'My Kingdom Swarm,' and you shall invade the kingdoms of the earth. ~ Chuck Pierce
Us Army quotes by Chuck Pierce
I like army boots, I like peasant skirts - sometimes together! So I do know that I have odd taste. ~ Mayim Bialik
Us Army quotes by Mayim Bialik
I've lived in 11 states, but I'm not an Army brat. My father couldn't hold a job, so every six months, we'd move. ~ Geneva Carr
Us Army quotes by Geneva Carr
I would have sooner believed in fairy tales coming true.
Of course, we all believe in fairy tales now. The Scarlet Varulv has slunk out of the pages and lives with me in this cottage. The Sleeping Prince has woken and sacked Lormere, an army of alchemy-made golems behind him as he murders his way across the country.
Stories are no longer stories; characters run rampant through the world these days. All I'm waiting for is Mully-No-Hands to knock on the window, begging to come in and warm himself, and my life will be complete.
Actually, no, that's not what I'm waiting for. ~ Melinda Salisbury
Us Army quotes by Melinda Salisbury
Everyone wants peace - and they will fight the most terrible war to get it. ~ Miles Kington
Us Army quotes by Miles Kington
Sometimes it has been of great moment while the fight is going on, to disseminate words that pronounce the enemies' captain to be dead, or to have been conquered by another part of the army. Many times this has given victory to him who used it. ~ Niccolo Machiavelli
Us Army quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
It was traumatic for my children to see the British army en masse coming into our home and searching the house. I recall on one occasion, when our home was raided, my youngest son was standing at the top of the stairs - he would probably have been only three years of age - in his pyjamas. The soldiers came up the stairs, and he peed himself. ~ Martin McGuinness
