It's hard to tell what people realize. Everybody's different and has a different understanding of the difference in times. ~ Mia Wasikowska
Different Understanding quotes by Mia Wasikowska
Thus our own age is essentially one of understanding, and on the average, perhaps, more knowledgeable than any former generation, but it is without passion. Every one knows a great deal, we all know which way we ought to go and all the different ways we can go, but nobody is willing to move. ~ Soren Kierkegaard
Different Understanding quotes by Soren Kierkegaard
They may then be willing to cast principled votes based on an educated understanding of the public interest in the face of polls suggesting that the public itself may have quite a different understanding of where its interest lies. ~ James L. Buckley
Different Understanding quotes by James L. Buckley
I would also hope that readers receive a larger understanding, or a different understanding, of what it means to be human, than they might have had before. We suffer from being quick to judge, quick to make excuses for ourselves and others, and I would like the reader to feel that we are all, more or less, in a similar state as we love and disappoint one another, and that we try, most of us, as best we can, and that to fail and succeed is what we do. ~ Elizabeth Strout
Different Understanding quotes by Elizabeth Strout
Observing and understanding are two different things. ~ Mary E. Pearson
Different Understanding quotes by Mary E. Pearson
A different understanding of the imago Dei gained popularity in the twentieth century, though it had predecessors in earlier church history. This view locates the imago Dei in the commission of God for humans to "have dominion" over the earth. This view is sometimes referred to as the functional view of the imago Dei, for it locates the essence of our divine image in what we as humans are called to do. As God is the loving Lord of the entire cosmos, humans are called to be the loving lords of the entire earth. A ~ Gregory A. Boyd
Different Understanding quotes by Gregory A. Boyd
In Plato's Republic, Socrates expresses great fear about democracy because it is, in his mind, synonymous with freedom. The result is tyranny. But modern times have brought us a different understanding of democracy as an ideal. It is how to give the appearance of democracy yet deny it in practice, ensuring that democracy in its false form gives consent by the people to a small group, the oligarchs. This is accomplished through a combination of the people's silence and a rigged system that changes a working democracy of public participation and deliberation to a charade. ~ Noam Chomsky
Different Understanding quotes by Noam Chomsky
Anybody who has gone through a life-changing experience will tell you there is a different understanding of what is real and what is important, and when you are going through different moments, you can reflect and go, 'I have been through worse.' ~ Delta Goodrem
Different Understanding quotes by Delta Goodrem
I'm from the South, and there's a different understanding of how to chop. There's a syllable play. It's a delicate art. Your accent has a lot to do with it. If you're from a certain area, words don't roll of your tongue as slick. ~ Yelawolf
Different Understanding quotes by Yelawolf
Some people are like egg. The more you apply heat to them, the harder they become. To hatch them, just use a gentle heat, and to keep them alive, just keep them cool. ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Different Understanding quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Let us know our differences! Let us understand our differences! Let us know and understand that we are all different people with different differences! We all have different differences that are not all that different! Understanding is the matter! When we get to know and understand our differences well, we shall least spit on each other just because of our differences! ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Different Understanding quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Jesus died for our sins" has been understood. Among some Christians, it is seen as an essential doctrinal element in the Christian belief system. Seen this way, it becomes a doctrinal requirement: we are made right with God by believing that Jesus is the sacrifice. The system of requirements remains, and believing in Jesus is the new requirement. Seeing it as a metaphorical proclamation of the radical grace of God leads to a very different understanding. "Jesus died for our sins" means the abolition of the system of requirements, not the establishment of a new system of requirements. ~ Marcus J. Borg
Different Understanding quotes by Marcus J. Borg
Premillennialists tended to have an even more melancholy view of nonChristians than had prevailed among their predecessors; sometimes this view was applied even to those who professed to be Christians but clearly had a different understanding of the gospel. All reality was, in essentially Manichean categories, divided into neat antitheses: good and evil, the saved and the lost, the true and the false (cf Marsden 1980:211). "In this dichotomized worldview, ambiguity was rare" (:225). Conversion was a crisis experience, a transfer from absolute darkness to absolute light. The millions on their way to perdition should therefore be snatched from the jaws of hell as soon as possible. Missionary motivation shifted gradually from emphasizing the depth of God's love to concentrating on the imminence and horror of divine judgment. ~ David J. Bosch
Different Understanding quotes by David J. Bosch
There are good books, indifferent books, and bad books. Amongst the good books some are honest, inspiring, moving, prophetic and improving. But in my language there is another category: there are Ah! Books. This is one of them. Ah! Books are those which induce a fundamental change in the reader's consciousness. They widen his sensibility in such a way that he is able to look upon familiar things as though he is seeing and understanding them for the first time. Ah! Books are galvanic. They touch the nerve centre of the whole being so that the reader receives an almost palpable physical shock. A tremor of excited perception ripples through the person. ~ Vernon Sproxton
Different Understanding quotes by Vernon Sproxton
I know I'm going to have to get beyond being George H.W. Bush's son and Barbara's son
for which I'm really proud. And I'm going to get beyond being George W.'s brother for which I am extraordinarily proud as well, there's a lot of interest in finding the ways that we are different and all this. Well, the simple fact is that we're all on our own life's journey
my brothers and sister are different than me. ~ Jeb Bush
Different Understanding quotes by Jeb Bush
The company Liberated People represents just not liberation of different nations around the world; it can be special liberation days. It can be what the company represents and helps highlight someone's personal liberation date. ~ Gbenga Akinnagbe
Different Understanding quotes by Gbenga Akinnagbe
I knew nothing about the industry, I didn't go to fashion school, but I was brave enough to do things in a different way. ~ Peter Nygard
Different Understanding quotes by Peter Nygard
Understanding- -like civilization, happiness, music, science and a host of other great endeavors
is not a state of being, but a manner of traveling. This great road has no final destination. The journey itself is the reward. ~ Alan Kay
Different Understanding quotes by Alan Kay
When I look in the fridge, I see groceries, but I don't see food. My stomach growls; but there is no appetite.
Appetite and hunger are different. Appetite is the mental prompting that kicks the auto-response into drive so you actually reach out, take the food, put it in your mouth, chew, and swallow. I learned this in my first psychology course. Eating isn't just a physical need; it starts in the mind, generating hunger, which then should trigger the body to ingest food. I have no sparks between these plugs. ~ Julie Gregory
Different Understanding quotes by Julie Gregory
Sometimes shutting off the sound on the television can allow you to actually watch the game and take it in in an entirely different and more direct way - a first-order, first-person experience - rather than filtered through the mind of another. ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn
Different Understanding quotes by Jon Kabat-Zinn
Just because people think politically different to you doesn't mean they're inhuman. ~ John Lydon
Different Understanding quotes by John Lydon
if they hadn't both been pretending, but had had what is called a heart-to-heart talk, that is, simply told each other just what they were thinking and feeling, then they would just have looked into each other's eyes, and Constantine would only have said: 'You're dying, dying, dying!' – while Nicholas would simply have replied: 'I know I'm dying, but I'm afraid, afraid, afraid!' That's all they would have said if they'd been talking straight from the heart. But it was impossible to live that way, so Levin tried to do what he'd been trying to do all his life without being able to, what a great many people could do so well, as he observed, and without which life was impossible: he tried to say something different from what he thought, and he always felt it came out false, that his brother caught him out and was irritated by it. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Different Understanding quotes by Leo Tolstoy
MRI testing again shows what may be the underlying brain mechanism. The amygdalae are two small lobes in the brain associated with fear, arousal, and emotions. When they are active, it is thought to be a sign of vigilance, meaning that the brain is wary and wants more information. A study at Massachusetts General Hospital found that when subjects looked at photographs of faces - half were white, half were black - MRI scans found high amygdala activity. This was considered to be a normal reaction to unfamiliar faces. When the subjects looked at the photographs a second time the faces were more familiar; only the other-race faces continued to provoke high amygdala activity. This was true for both blacks and whites, suggesting that encounters with people of different races keep the brain at a higher level of watchfulness.
Amygdalae notice race even when a person does not. William A. Cunningham of Ohio State University showed white subjects pictures of faces for only 30 milliseconds - not long enough for the subjects to be conscious of them - but black faces triggered greater amygdala activity than white faces. When he showed faces for a half a second - long enough for people to notice race - he found that black faces prompted greater activity in the pre-frontal areas, a part of the brain associated with detecting internal conflicts and controlling conscious behavior. This suggested the subjects were trying to suppress certain feelings about blacks.
Steven Neuberg of Ar ~ Jared Taylor
Different Understanding quotes by Jared Taylor
Some of the most memorable, and least regrettable, nights of my own youth were spent in coon hunting with farmers. There is no denying that these activities contributed to the economy of farm households, but a further fact is that they were pleasures; they were wilderness pleasures, not greatly different from the pleasures pursued by conservationists and wilderness lovers. As I was always aware, my friends the coon hunters were not motivated just by the wish to tree coons and listen to hounds and listen to each other, all of which were sufficiently attractive; they were coon hunters also because they wanted to be afoot in the woods at night. Most of the farmers I have known, and certainly the most interesting ones, have had the capacity to ramble about outdoors for the mere happiness of it, alert to the doings of the creatures, amused by the sight of a fox catching grasshoppers, or by the puzzle of wild tracks in the snow. ~ Wendell Berry
Different Understanding quotes by Wendell Berry
I try to sing many different kinds of songs. If I sing a batch of humorous songs, I'll throw in a deadly serious song. Or if I'm singing too many serious songs, I'll throw in a ridiculous song, to mix it up. ~ Pete Seeger
Different Understanding quotes by Pete Seeger
Patience and timing ... everything comes when it must come. A life cannot be rushed, cannot be worked on a schedule as so many people want it to be. We must accept what comes to us at a given time, and not ask for more. But life is endless, so we never die; we were never really born. We just pass through different phases. There is no end. Humans have many dimensions. But time is not as we see time, but rather in lessons that are learned. ~ Brian L. Weiss
Different Understanding quotes by Brian L. Weiss
Universities should be about more than developing work skills. They must also be about producing civic-minded and critically engaged citizens - citizens who can engage in debate, dialogue and bear witness to a different and critical sense of remembering, agency, ethics and collective resistance. ~ Henry Giroux
Different Understanding quotes by Henry Giroux
It's funny, because in drama school, my greatest strength was my range. So my early career was like that: I played all kinds of different characters. ~ Lance Reddick
Different Understanding quotes by Lance Reddick
He lived in sight of both worlds, but he looked toward the unknown. And he was a scholar.... You can still live on that shimmering line between your old thinking and your new understanding, always in a state of learning. In the figurative sense, this is a border that is always moving-- as you advance forward in your studies and realizations, that mysterious forest of the unknown always stays a few feet ahead of you, so you have to travel light in order to keep following it. You have to stay mobile, movable, supple. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Different Understanding quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
All music is based on country music. And that's why so many different kinds of people relate to it. There are more country music fans in New Jersey than there are down South. ~ Loretta Lynn
Different Understanding quotes by Loretta Lynn
The empathic understanding of the experience of other human beings is as basic an endowment of man as his vision, hearing, touch, taste and smell ~ Heinz Kohut
Different Understanding quotes by Heinz Kohut
Reading across disciplinary categories in this way provides one of the main organizing logics of this book because instinct's presence, absence, and characterization within different disciplines is in itself instructive about the changes to sexuality taking place around the turn of the century. ~ Kathleen Frederickson
Different Understanding quotes by Kathleen Frederickson
Some people suggest that the problem is the separation of powers. If you had a parliamentary system, the struggle for power would not result in such complex peace treaties that empower so many different people to pursue so many contradictory aims. ~ James Q. Wilson
Different Understanding quotes by James Q. Wilson
As an actress, I'm constantly watching different shows and films and am always gathering information and inspiration for characters and techniques to make my performances the best they can be. ~ Rachel G. Fox
Different Understanding quotes by Rachel G. Fox
God is boundless, and so is never a boundary: God's music possesses the richness of every transition, interval, measure, variation - all dancing and delight. And because God is beautiful, being abounds with difference: shape, variety, manifold relation. Beauty is the distinction of the different, the otherness of the other. ~ David Hart
Different Understanding quotes by David Hart
Travel books are all sorts - some are autobiographies, some are about falling in love. Some are about having great meals, some are about suffering. There are as many different kinds of travel books as there are novels. People think a travel book is one thing. It's many things. ~ Paul Theroux
Different Understanding quotes by Paul Theroux
I think there are a lot of different things that dreams do for the individual and they're fascinating because it's not totally known what they do, but we have some science that is opening the door to a new world as we speak. ~ Tom DeLonge
Different Understanding quotes by Tom DeLonge
There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause trouble without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood... and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others. They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they've never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them... because in truth, I am that monster. ~ L Lawliet
Different Understanding quotes by L Lawliet
Africa can test your patience. Yet, it is a land of people who have nothing but patience. Each animal teaches patience and persistence while waiting for its meal. Farmers hope the next season will bring rain so they can feed their families each day. They say, "If this is not the year, maybe next year, God willing." Though I accept I will always be different, I pray for the day when the mzungu title is no longer needed. If not this year, maybe next year, God willing. ~ Alexandria Kathleen Osborne
Different Understanding quotes by Alexandria Kathleen Osborne
9p.m. My flat. Feel very strange and empty. Is all very well thinking everything is going to be different when you come back but then it is all the same. Suppose I have to make it different. But what am I going to do with my life?
I know. Will eat some cheese. ~ Helen Fielding
Different Understanding quotes by Helen Fielding
Kimberly Reed explains why this love has transferred to adulthood, saying, "When you love something as a kid, you never stop loving it; you just tuck that love away in a different spot in your heart. ~ Nikki Van Noy
Different Understanding quotes by Nikki Van Noy
Realize in your daily life that 'matter' is merely an aggregation of protons and electrons subject entirely to the control of Mind; that your environment, your success, your happiness, are all of your own making ... All wealth depends upon a clear understanding of the fact that mind- thought - is the only creator. The great business of life is thinking. Control your thoughts and you control circumstance. ~ Robert Collier
Different Understanding quotes by Robert Collier
The part of thinking that's easy to handle is the part that works by analogy with speech. Thinking in words, speaking our thoughts internally, projects an auditorium inside our skulls. Dark or bright, a shadow theater or a stage scorched by klieg lights, here we try out voices, including the voice we have settled on as the familiar sound of our identity, although it may not be what other people hear when we speak aloud. But that is the topmost of the linguistic processes going on in the mind. Beneath the auditorium runs a continuous river of thought that not only is soundless but is not ordered so it can be spoken. For obvious reasons, describing it is difficult. If I dip experimentally into the wordless flow, and then try to recall the sensations of it, I have the impression of a state in which grammar is present – for when I think like this I am certainly construing lucid relationships between different kinds of meaning, and making sense of the world by distinguishing between (for a start) objects and actions – but thought there are so to speak nounlike and verblike concentrations in the flow, I do not solidify them, I do not break them off into word-sized units. Are there pictures? Yes, but I am not watching a slide show, the images do not come in units either. Sometimes there's a visual turbulence – rapid, tumbling, propelled – that doesn't resolve into anything like the outlines of separate images. Sometimes one image, like a key, will hold steady while a whole train of ~ Francis Spufford
Different Understanding quotes by Francis Spufford
Understanding the intentions of a play is so key because you can block a guy into the running back if you don't know how the play is supposed to work or where the back is going to come out. ~ D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Different Understanding quotes by D'Brickashaw Ferguson
As much as I'm drawn to writing about teenage girls, I like the idea of having the freedom to branch out and write about different ages, for different ages. ~ Ann Brashares
Different Understanding quotes by Ann Brashares
The power of psychedelics ... is that they often reveal, in the span of a few hours, depths of awe and understanding that can otherwise elude us for a lifetime. ~ Sam Harris
Different Understanding quotes by Sam Harris
I wanted to explore what all this new-found wealth means for the different generations of Chinese who have to live together in this place that is transforming at warp speed into the richest country on the planet. ~ Kevin Kwan
Different Understanding quotes by Kevin Kwan
Smoke and mirrors' is a useful metaphor for the ways in which organised abuse has chided conceptualisation and understanding. The chapter provides an overview of cite often incendiary debates over organised abuse before going on to suggest that critical theories on gender, crime and intersubjectivity may offer new insights into the phenomenon. ~ Michael Salter
Different Understanding quotes by Michael Salter
Life is full of what-ifs, many of which could easily have been realities, had just a few things been different. ~ Julian Baggini
Different Understanding quotes by Julian Baggini
She glances at each of her three companions, at the protective veneers they're all wearing, trying to mask the different lies they've told one another. The lies they're all continuing to try to maintain. Hoping these lies will carry them through the rest of their full and satisfying lives, despite the truths they've chosen not to tell the most important people in their worlds. ~ Chris Pavone
