It's physics. Pure physics,
I'm falling fast and faster still.
So fall with me. Fall down with me.
And stay. ~ Cecily Von Ziegesar
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Cecily Von Ziegesar
In 1963, when I assigned the name "quark" to the fundamental constituents of the nucleon, I had the sound first, without the spelling, which could have been "kwork." Then, in one of my occasional perusals of Finnegans Wake, by James Joyce, I came across the word "quark" in the phrase "Three quarks for Muster Mark." Since "quark" (meaning, for one thing, the cry of a gull) was clearly intended to rhyme with "Mark," as well as "bark" and other such words, I had to find an excuse to pronounce it as "kwork." But the book represents the dreams of a publican named Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker. Words in the text are typically drawn from several sources at once, like the "portmanteau words" in Through the Looking Glass. From time to time, phrases occur in the book that are partially determined by calls for drinks at the bar. I argued, therefore, that perhaps one of the multiple sources of the cry "Three quarks for Muster Mark" might be "Three quarts for Mister Mark," in which case the pronunciation "kwork" would not be totally unjustified. In any case, the number three fitted perfectly the way quarks occur in nature. ~ Murray Gell-Mann
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Murray Gell-Mann
Teachers need to be comfortable talking about feelings. This is part of teaching emotional literacy - a set of skills we can all develop, including the ability to read, understand, and respond appropriately to one's own emotions and the emotions of others. ~ Daniel Goleman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Goleman
We're not meant to be, Daniel. I'm an undocumented immigrant. I'm being deported. Today is my last day in America. Tomorrow I'll be gone. ~ Nicola Yoon
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Nicola Yoon
We thought we had time. ~ Daniel Handler
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Handler
Amos and I introduced the idea of a conjunction fallacy, which people commit when they judge a conjunction of two events (here, bank teller and feminist) to be more probable than one of the events (bank teller) in a direct comparison. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Kahneman
I think one of the reasons it ended was that his eyes never lit up for me the way they did for classical music. I realize that in the long run I may not be as wonderful as a Brahms symphony but I think I'm good for a Haydn quintet. ~ Daniel Handler
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Handler
It's knowing one's ... limitations ... and then ignoring them. ~ Daniel Suarez
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Suarez
The illusion that one has understood the past feeds the further illusion that one can predict and control the future. These illusions are comforting. They reduce the anxiety that we would experience if we allowed ourselves to fully acknowledge the uncertainties of existence. We all have a need for the reassuring message that actions have appropriate consequences, and that success will reward wisdom and courage. Many business books are tailor-made to satisfy this need. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Kahneman
Blessings upon the head of Daniel Charles Solander, a botanist of distinction, who after extensive travels became a "Keeper" in the British Museum. He invented the leather case which bears his name, a box in the exact shape of a book, in which some precious volume may be kept when placed upon one's shelves. ~ A. Edward Newton
Daniel Humphrey quotes by A. Edward Newton
May the forests be with you and with your children. ~ Daniel Quinn
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Quinn
Do unto others before they have a chance to do unto you. ~ Daniel Silva
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Silva
Most people throughout the world, not just in
Newport Beach, care more about their faces, their boobs, their bellies, their butts, and
their abs than they do their brains. But it is your brain that is the key to having the face,
the breasts, the belly, the butt, the abs, and the overall health you have always wanted;
and it is brain dysfunction, in large part, that ruins our bodies and causes premature
aging. ~ Daniel G. Amen
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel G. Amen
I will torture you for a human eternity, during which time you will beg me for death by an Opus 24/24, or an ax, or a thousand snakebites. I can see the future, Daniel, and I am looking forward to it, every excruciating second of your murder and dismembedment. Isn't that a wonderful English word, dis-member-ment? ~ James Patterson
Daniel Humphrey quotes by James Patterson
People were so cheap there ... they ate beans to save on bubble bath. ~ Daniel Wallace
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Wallace
Your muscles tensed up, your blood pressure rose, and your heart rate increased. Someone looking closely at your eyes while you tackled this problem would have seen your pupils dilate. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Kahneman
Having someone prancing around with an active chain saw while the ground shifted seemed spectacularly unwise. ~ Daniel O'Malley
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel O'Malley
I can't think of anything more disheartening than living a life without a clear purpose. ~ Daniel Willey
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Willey
Electronic culture created soulless replacements for connective rituals- television supplanted tribal legends told by the fire; 'fast food' consumed in distraction took the place of a shared meal. We substituted matter for Mater (feminine principle), money for mother's milk, objects for emotional bonds. ~ Daniel Pinchbeck
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Pinchbeck
The argument has long been made that we humans are by nature compassionate and empathic despite the occasional streak of meanness, but torrents of bad news throughout history have contradicted that claim, and little sound science has backed it. But try this thought experiment. Imagine the number of opportunities people around the world today might have to commit an antisocial act, from rape or murder to simple rudeness and dishonesty. Make that number the bottom of a fraction. Now for the top value you put the number of such antisocial acts that will actually occur today.

That ratio of potential to enacted meanness holds at close to zero any day of the year. And if for the top value you put the number of benevolent acts performed in a given day, the ratio of kindness to cruelty will always be positive. (The news, however, comes to us as though that ratio was reversed.)

Harvard's Jerome Kagan proposes this mental exercise to make a simple point about human nature: the sum total of goodness vastly outweighs that of meanness. 'Although humans inherit a biological bias that permits them to feel anger, jealousy, selfishness and envy, and to be rude, aggressive or violent,' Kagan notes, 'they inherit an even stronger biological bias for kindness, compassion, cooperation, love and nurture – especially toward those in need.' This inbuilt ethical sense, he adds, 'is a biological feature of our species. ~ Daniel Goleman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Goleman
Perhaps I'm particularly serious, because I'm not unaware of the potential absurdity of what I'm doing. ~ Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Day-Lewis
I am fascinated at how much time we spend doing things that we don't enjoy. ~ Daniel Willey
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Willey
The selection process is simple. Hubby exhausts every ploy in his psychological arsenal to filter out the liars, fakes, and undesirables. (If only every husband were so devoted . . .) Me, I try to prove to that I'm not the stereotypical single male. That I'm in the Lifestyle for the right reasons. That I'm courteous and respectful. All of which are true, but the burden of proof is on
me. It always is. ~ Daniel Stern
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Stern
When you analyze happiness, it turns out that the way you spend your time is extremely important. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Kahneman
Remember, we are all part of a great story that is really about God, not us. He is the number one character (read: winner), and we are all secondary (read: losers). ~ Daniel Hochhalter
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Hochhalter
One of the saddest things I've seen in Amazonian cultures is people who were self-sufficient and happy that now think of themselves as poor and become dissatisfied with their lives. What worries me is outsiders trying to impose their values and materialism on the Piraha. ~ Daniel Everett
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Everett
Sydney discovers that she minds the loss of her mourning. When she grieved, she felt herself to be intimately connected to Daniel. But with each passing day, he floats away from her. When she thinks about him now, it is more as a lost possibility than as a man. She has forgotten his breath, his musculature. ~ Anita Shreve
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Anita Shreve
A commonplace of political rhetoric has it that the quality of a civilization may be measured by how it cares for its elderly. Just as surely, the future of a society may be forecast by how it cares for its young. ~ Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Patrick Moynihan
What are the sorrows of other men to us, and what their joy? ... ~ Daniel Defoe
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Defoe
Money does not buy you happiness, but lack of money certainly buys you misery. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Kahneman

In sum, the purpose is to contest the popular view, because popular opinions are so frequently found to be untimely, misled (by propaganda), or plainly wrong. ~ Humphrey B. Neill
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Humphrey B. Neill
A stupid decision that works out well becomes a brilliant decision in hindsight. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Kahneman
Mangia Bene e Sempre Avere Buono Tempi," (Eat Well & Always Have Good Times). ~ Daniel Bellino-Zwicke
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Bellino-Zwicke
YOUR LIFE HAS BEEN A MIX OF TRIUMPHS AND TOILS, CHALLENGES AND TESTS, AND YOU HAVE BEEN FOUND WORTHY. YOUR FAITH IN ME AND YOUR LOVING HEART ARE A TESTAMENT TO MY PEOPLE.
'Thank you, my God.'
COME, BE WITH ME. SIT WITH ME AT MY TABLE; JOIN ME IN RAPTURE. AND BRING YOUR CUTE FRIEND TOO. ~ Daniel Keidl
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Keidl
Look at the language. If a scientist delivers the simple, unconditional, absolutely certain statements that politicians and journalists want, he is talking as an activist, not a scientist. ~ Daniel Gardner
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Gardner
These people are headstrong and if they feel the curb loosed but one link they will with bit in the teeth in one month run further out of the career of good order than they will be brought back in three months. ~ Humphrey Gilbert
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Humphrey Gilbert
I can't say that dropping out of school at 16 to join the Marines was my best idea. On the other hand, maybe it was. Who knows? ~ Daniel Woodrell
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Woodrell
Headphones opened up a world of sonic colors, a palette of nuances and details that went far beyond the chords and melody, the lyrics, or a particular singer's voice. The swampy Deep South ambience of "Green River" by Creedence, or the pastoral, open-space beauty of the Beatles' "Mother Nature's Son"; the oboes in Beethoven's Sixth (conducted by Karajan), faint and drenched in the atmosphere of a large wood-and-stone church; the sound was an enveloping experience. ~ Daniel J. Levitin
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel J. Levitin
The bodies draped down through the leaves like rancid baubles in the locks of a horrible harlot. ~ Daniel Woodrell
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Woodrell
Though this was all but a fiction of his own, yet it had its desired effect; Atkins fell upon his knees to beg the captain to intercede with the governor for his life; and all the rest begged of him, for God's sake, that they might not be sent to England. ~ Daniel Defoe
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Defoe
The understanding of reality always emerges through the emotions that reality gives us. ~ Daniel Marques
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Marques
I realized there might be monetary or financial reasons to jump in and write a 'Winter's Bone Retriumphs' or something, and nobody would object to me doing that in publishing. But it would be a waste of my time, and they always take a little longer than you thought they would take. ~ Daniel Woodrell
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Woodrell
With the skills that I have and with my commitment to getting better I don't see any reason I can't win every single fight I'm in. ~ Daniel Cormier
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Cormier
But the fact remains that 2 million years ago in Africa, a Homo erectus community began to share information among its members by means of language. They were the first to say, 'It's over there,' or, 'I am hungry.' Maybe the first to say, 'I love you. ~ Daniel L. Everett
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel L. Everett
All that we "know" is what registers on our brains, so what you perceive (your individual reality-tunnel) is made up of nothing but thoughts - as Sir Humphrey Davy noted when self-experimenting with nitrous oxide in 1819, and as Buddha noticed by sitting alone until all his social imprints atrophied and dropped away. ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
Hope is always about the future. And it isn't always good news. Sometimes, hope can imprison us with belief or expectation that something will happen in the future to change our lives. Similarly hopelessness isn't always about despair. Hopelessness can bring us right into this very moment and answer all of life's most difficult questions. Who am I? Where am I? What does this mean? And what now? ~ Daniel Gottlieb
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Gottlieb
It's not the job of an actor to judge your character ~ Daniel Craig
Daniel Humphrey quotes by Daniel Craig
Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended. ... Can events be guided so that we may survive? VERNOR VINGE, 1993 ~ Daniel H. Wilson
