That the religious right completely took over the word Christian is a given. At one time, phrases such as Christian charity and Christian tolerance were used to denote kindness and compassion. To perform a "Christian" act meant an act of giving, of acceptance, of toleration. Now, Christian is invariably linked to right-wing conservative political thought
Christian nation, Christian morality, Christian values, Christian family. ~ Peter McWilliams
Christian Morality quotes by Peter McWilliams
Discovering the inapplicability of Judeo-Christian morality in certain circumstances involving affairs of state can be searing. The rare individuals who have recognized the necessity of violating such morality, acted accordingly, and taken responsibility for their actions are among the most necessary leaders for their countries, even as they have caused great unease ..

Christian Morality quotes by Robert D. Kaplan
Because Christian morality leaves animals out of account, they are at once outlawed in philosophical morals; they are mere 'things,' mere means to any ends whatsoever. They can therefore be used for vivisection, hunting, coursing, bullfights, and horse racing, and can be whipped to death as they struggle along with heavy carts of stone. Shame on such a morality that is worthy of pariahs, and that fails to recognize the eternal essence that exists in every living thing, and shines forth with inscrutable significance from all eyes that see the sun! ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Christian Morality quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
It may be too much to expect that nations should be governed in their relations towards each other by the precepts of Christian morality, but surely it is not too much to ask that they should conform to the code of courtesy and good breeding recognized among gentlemen in the intercourse of social life. ~ George Stillman Hillard
Christian Morality quotes by George Stillman Hillard
They tried to substitute for Christianity a body of dogmas called "dialectical materialism." As Orestes Brownson pointed out in 1849, and as Arnold Toynbee has also written, communism was really a kind of caricature of Christianity, borrowing certain of its moral affirmations, imitating its dogmas, and even appropriating some of its phrases. This made communism all the more dangerous: for the superficial similarities between Christian morality and the pretended Soviet morality sometimes deluded Americans and people in other free states into thinking that communism had high moral aspirations. ~ Russell Kirk
Christian Morality quotes by Russell Kirk
The first thing to get clear about Christian morality between man and man is that in this department Christ did not come to teach any brand new morality. The Golden Rule of the New Testament (Do as you would be done by) is a summing up of what everyone, at bottom, had always known to be right. ~ C.S. Lewis
Christian Morality quotes by C.S. Lewis
Christian morality (so called) has all the characters of a reaction; it is, in great part, a protest against Paganism. Its ideal is negative rather than positive; passive rather than action; innocence rather than Nobleness; Abstinence from Evil, rather than energetic Pursuit of Good: in its precepts (as has been well said) 'thou shalt not' predominates unduly over 'thou shalt. ~ John Stuart Mill
Christian Morality quotes by John Stuart Mill
When one gives up Christian belief one thereby deprives oneself of the right to Christian morality. For the latter is absolutely not self-evident: one must make this point clear again and again, in spite of English shallowpates. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Christian Morality quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
It was much less dangerous for the disciples of Christ to neglect the observance of the moral duties, than to despise the censures and authority of their bishops. ~ Edward Gibbon
Christian Morality quotes by Edward Gibbon
The most powerful anti-Christian movement is the one that takes over and "radicalizes" the concern for victims in order to paganize it. The powers and principalities want to be "revolutionary" now, and they reproach Christianity for not defending victims with enough ardor. In Christian history they see nothing but persecutions, acts of oppression, inquisitions.

This other totalitarianism presents itself as the liberator of humanity. In trying to usurp the place of Christ, the powers imitate him in the way a mimetic rival imitates his model in order to defeat him. They denounce the Christian concern for victims as hypocritical and a pale imitation of the authentic crusade against oppression and persecution for which they would carry the banner themselves. In the symbolic language of the New Testament, we would say that in our world Satan, trying to make a new start and gain new triumphs, borrows the language of victims.

...

The Antichrist boasts of bringing to human beings the peace and tolerance that Christianity promised but has failed to deliver. Actually, what the radicalization of contemporary victimology produces is a return to all sorts of pagan practices: abortion, euthanasia, sexual undifferentiation, Roman circus games galore but without real victims, etc.

Neo-paganism would like to turn the Ten Commandments and all of Judeo-Christian morality into some alleged intolerable violence, and indeed its primary objective is their ~ Rene Girard
Christian Morality quotes by Rene Girard
Even the staunchest atheist growing up in Western society cannot avoid having absorbed the basic tenets of Christian morality. Our societies are steeped in it: everything we have accomplished over the centuries, even science, developed either hand in hand with or in opposition to religion, but never separately. It is impossible to know what morality would look like without religion. It would require a visit to a human culture that is not now and never was religious. That such cultures do not exist should give us pause. ~ Frans De Waal
Christian Morality quotes by Frans De Waal
The darker side of Nietzsche's ideas was incorporated into the Nazi belief system. Part of the link was straightforward: some things Nietzsche said were pure Nazi doctrine. His comments that 'The extinction of many types of people is just as desirable as any form of reproduction' and that 'the tendency must be towards the rendering extinct of the wretched, the deformed, the degenerate' could come from any work on racial hygiene.

Nietzsche's central contribution was not these explicitly Social Darwinist views, but his rejection of the Judeo-Christian morality of compassion for the weak. Self-creation required hardness towards oneself: a strong will imposing coherence on conflicting impulses. It also requires hardness on others. Conflicts between the self-creative projects of different people made inevitable the attempt to dominate others. The whole of life was a struggle in which victory went to the brave and to the strong-willed. Noble human qualities, linked with the will to power, were brought out in combat but atrophied in peace. Compassion was weakness, cowardice and self-deception. The Judeo-Christian emphasis on it was poison. In drawing these consequences from his beliefs about the death of God and from Social Darwinism, Nietzsche provided the part of the Nazi belief system which 'justified' the cruel steps they took to implement their other beliefs. ~ Jonathan Glover
Christian Morality quotes by Jonathan Glover
To justify Christian morality because it provides a foundation of morality, instead of showing the necessity of Christian morality from the truth of Christianity, is a very dangerous inversion. ~ T. S. Eliot
Christian Morality quotes by T. S. Eliot
We need to attack the false foundation of autonomous human reasoning that leads to evolution and millions of years, and proclaim that God's revealed Word is authoritative and its history of the world is foundational to Christian morality and the gospel of Jesus Christ. ~ Ken Ham
Christian Morality quotes by Ken Ham
When one gives up the Christian faith, one pulls the right to Christian morality out from under one's feet. This morality is by no means self-evident. Christianity is a system, a whole view of things thought out together. By breaking one main concept out of it, the faith in God, one breaks the whole. It stands or falls with faith in God. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Christian Morality quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Nothing has stolen more dreams, dashed more hopes, broken up more families, and messed up more people psychologically than our propensity to disregard God's commands regarding sexual purity. ~ Andy Stanley
Christian Morality quotes by Andy Stanley
I go forward slowly, dead, and my vision is no longer mine, it's nothing: it's only the vision of the human animal who, without wanting, inherited Greek culture, Roman order, Christian morality, and all the other illusions that constitute the civilization in which I feel.
Where can the living be? ~ Fernando Pessoa
Christian Morality quotes by Fernando Pessoa
Giving to the poor is an essential part of Christian morality. ~ C.S. Lewis
Christian Morality quotes by C.S. Lewis
In the Celtic world, and especially in the Celtic world of the senses, there was no barrier between soul and body. Each was natural to the other. The soul was the sister of the body, the body the sister of the soul. As yet there was no negative splitting of dualistic Christian morality, which later did so much damage to these two lovely and enfolded presences. The world of Celtic consciousness enjoyed this unified and lyrical sensuous spirituality ~ John O'Donohue
Christian Morality quotes by John O'Donohue
Thus Spoke Zarathustra (German: Also sprach Zarathustra, sometimes translated Thus Spake Zarathustra), subtitled A Book for All and None (Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen), is a written work by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, composed in four parts between 1883 and 1885. Much of the work deals with ideas such as the "eternal recurrence of the same", the parable on the "death of God", and the "prophecy" of the Overman, which were first introduced in The Gay Science.
Described by Nietzsche himself as "the deepest ever written", the book is a dense and esoteric treatise on philosophy and morality, featuring as protagonist a fictionalized Zarathustra. A central irony of the text is that the style of the Bible is used by Nietzsche to present ideas of his which fundamentally oppose Judaeo-Christian morality and tradition. ~ Lao Tzu
Christian Morality quotes by Lao Tzu
By setting such strong, harsh dichotomies God taught Israel that any assimilation to pagan idolatry is intolerable. It was His way of preserving Israel's spiritual health and posterity. God knew that if these Canaanite children were allowed to live, they would spell the undoing of Israel. The killing of the Canaanite children not only served to prevent assimilation to Canaanite identity but also served as a shattering, tangible illustration of Israel's being set exclusively apart for God. ~ William Lane Craig
Christian Morality quotes by William Lane Craig
Let the children ... be carefully instructed in the principles and obligations of the Christian religion. This is the most essential part of education. ~ Benjamin Rush
Christian Morality quotes by Benjamin Rush
Communication is not a one-way street. ~ Jim George
Christian Morality quotes by Jim George
I was raised Catholic and now I am a Christian and follow of the Lord Jesus Christ. I made the change because the Holy Spirit revealed a truth to me. ~ Manny Pacquiao
Christian Morality quotes by Manny Pacquiao
The person who calls himself a Christian, who says he loves God, yet does not seek his company and delight in it, can't be a true lover of God. ~ Kris Lundgaard
Christian Morality quotes by Kris Lundgaard
I'm spiritual. I'm religious. I'm a strong Christian and I'm a Catholic but I go to a Presbyterian Church. Occasionally I go to the Catholic church too. I take communion. I haven't transferred my membership or anything. ~ Wesley Clark
Christian Morality quotes by Wesley Clark
It was once said, and very rightly, that a man who is well brought-up may read anything. The only people who boggle at what is perfectly natural are those who are the worst swine and the finest experts in filth. In their utterly contemptible pseudo-morality they ignore the contents and madly attack individual words. ~ Jaroslav Hasek
Christian Morality quotes by Jaroslav Hasek
Being a Christian has not and does not come naturally or easy for me. I take that to be a good thing because I am sure that to be a Christian requires training that lasts a lifetime. ~ Stanley Hauerwas
Christian Morality quotes by Stanley Hauerwas
The vital relationship which the Christian has to the Bible is not that he worships the letter, but that the Holy Spirit makes the words of the Bible spirit and life to him. ~ Oswald Chambers
Christian Morality quotes by Oswald Chambers
A Christian who isn't praying, is only playing! ~ Leonard Ravenhill
Christian Morality quotes by Leonard Ravenhill
Human being may fail you, but God will never forsake thee. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Morality quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
We who have Christ's eternal life need to throw away our own lives. ~ George Verwer
Christian Morality quotes by George Verwer
God honors you when you take a stand for what is right. ~ Jim George
Christian Morality quotes by Jim George
I thought I'd get over being insecure if I became famous, but it hasn't happened. It just gets worse, really. You get more and more on edge, more nervous. These are all the things I'm dealing with. You think if you get famous, fear will go away and problems will go away. But they don't. ~ Christian Slater
Christian Morality quotes by Christian Slater
If state, party and social policy will not be based on morality, then mankind has no future to speak of. ~ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Christian Morality quotes by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
I want to feel my own nothingness, I want to give myself up in absolute resignation to God, to lie prostrate and passive at His feet, with no other disposition in my heart than that of merging my will into His will, and no other language in my mouth than that of prayer for the perfecting of His strength in my weakness. ~ Thomas Chalmers
Christian Morality quotes by Thomas Chalmers
The dead person once had a life! This is a misery? ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Morality quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
A positive mind is like a powerful stream of water that is gathering volume and force from hundreds of tributaries all along its course. The further on it goes the greater its power, until when it reaches its goal, that power is simply immense. A negative mind, however, would be something like a stream, that the further it flows the more divisions it makes, until, when it reaches its goal, instead of being one powerful stream, it has become a hundred, small, weak, shallow streams. ~ Christian D. Larson
Christian Morality quotes by Christian D. Larson
Are we Christians in this country really changing our hearts, or do we just believe in a change of heart ... ? ~ Johann Baptist Metz
Christian Morality quotes by Johann Baptist Metz
We should be suspicious when God's call conforms so neatly to our own inclinations. ~ Christian Wiman
Christian Morality quotes by Christian Wiman
Morality is neither rational nor absolute nor natural. World has known many moral systems, each of which advances claims universality; all moral systems are therefore particular, serving a specific purpose for their propagators or creators, and enforcing a certain regime that disciplines human beings for social life by narrowing our perspectives and limiting our horizons. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Christian Morality quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
God created the family to provide the maximum love and support and morality and example that one can imagine. ~ Jerry Falwell
Christian Morality quotes by Jerry Falwell
It was just the two of us, inside there with just mirrors, all the way around us. Everywhere we looked, there were these two freaks, sitting at a table, eyeballing each other ~ Christian Bale
Christian Morality quotes by Christian Bale
Christianity is entitled to the tribute of respect. I do not of course mean that all individuals, nominally Christian, deserve trust, confidence, or even respect, for the contrary is too often the case. Too often, men hold religion as they do property - in their wives' names. ~ David Josiah Brewer
Christian Morality quotes by David Josiah Brewer
What'd you think?" Dan asked as we buckled into the Acclaim after another Sunday under the big top.

"I wonder if they realize their worship songs include both amillennial and premillennial theology," I said with a sigh. "Also, what's this business from the preacher about Moses writing Numbers? I mean, everyone knows Moses didn't actually write the book of Numbers. It originated from a combination of written and oral tradition and was assembled and edited by Jewish priests sometime during the postexilic period as an exercise in national self-definition. You can look that up on Wikipedia. And, while we're at it, a bit more Christology applied to the Old Testament text would be nice."

"Um, Rach, the sermon today was about humility."

Lord, have mercy.

See, I've got this coping mechanism thing where, when I'm feeling frightened or vulnerable or over my head, I intellectualize the situation to try and regain a sense of control. . . . In some religious traditions, this particular coping mechanism is known as pride.

I confess I preened it. I scoffed at the idea of being taught or led. Deconstructing was so much safer than trusting, so much easier than letting people in. I knew exactly what type of Christian I didn't want to be, but I was too frightened, or too rebellious, or too wounded, to imagine what might be next. Like a garish conch shell, my cynicism protected me from disappointment, or so I believed, so I expected the w ~ Rachel Held Evans
Christian Morality quotes by Rachel Held Evans
We are so prone to expect to become good Christians by some sudden experience that lifts us all at once to higher ground without the gradual climb. We forget that we are to "grow in grace" and that normal growth is not a matter of fits and starts. ~ Vance Havner
Christian Morality quotes by Vance Havner
We need to develop new strategies to overcome every challenge. And by faith we can graciously triumph. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Morality quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
To believe that God created a plurality of worlds, at least as numerous as what we call stars, renders the Christian faith at once little and ridiculous; and scatters it in the mind like feathers in the air. ~ Thomas Paine
Christian Morality quotes by Thomas Paine
I don't want to play these games of statistics any more; I have done that. I don't want to be imprisoned by that, or by the morality that is expected of activists. I have never been that pristine person, that role model. ~ Arundhati Roy
Christian Morality quotes by Arundhati Roy
As we search the Scriptures, we must allow them to search us, to sit in judgment upon our character and conduct. ~ Jerry Bridges
Christian Morality quotes by Jerry Bridges
If a Christian is not willing to rise early and work late, to expend greater effort in diligent study and faithful work, that person will not change a generation. Fatigue is the price of leadership. Mediocrity is the result of never getting tired. ~ J. Oswald Sanders
Christian Morality quotes by J. Oswald Sanders
I saw that all beings are fated to happiness: action is not life, but a way of wasting some force, an enervation. Morality is the weakness of the brain. ~ Arthur Rimbaud
Christian Morality quotes by Arthur Rimbaud
The gospel does in truth proclaim the redemption of reason. Obscurantism is always evil, and wilful error is always sin., All truth is God's truth; facts, as such, are sacred, and nothing is more un-Christian than to run away from them. ~ J.I. Packer
Christian Morality quotes by J.I. Packer
Persistent calling upon the name of the Lord breaks through every stronghold of the devil, for nothing is impossible with God. For Christians in these troubled times there is simply no other way. ~ Jim Cymbala
Christian Morality quotes by Jim Cymbala
A Man's sense of Morality tends to decrease as his Power increases, ~ Diana Gabaldon
Christian Morality quotes by Diana Gabaldon
There is a danger there - a very real danger to humanity. Consider, Watson, that the material, the sensual, the worldly would all prolong their worthless lives. The spiritual would not avoid the call to something higher. It would be the survival of the least fit. What sort of cesspool may not our poor world become? ~ Arthur Conan Doyle
Christian Morality quotes by Arthur Conan Doyle
With nations as with individuals our interests soundly calculated will ever be found inseparable from our moral duties. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Christian Morality quotes by Thomas Jefferson
In the conditions of the proletariat, those of old society at large are already virtually swamped. The proletarian is without property; his relation to his wife and children has no longer anything in common with the bourgeois family-relations; modern industrial labour, modern subjection to capital, the same in England as in France, in America as in Germany, has stripped him of every trace of national character. Law, morality, religion, are to him so many bourgeois prejudices, behind which lurk in ambush just as many bourgeois interests. ~ Friedrich Engels
Christian Morality quotes by Friedrich Engels
Order your soul; reduce your wants; live in charity; associate in Christian community; obey the laws; trust in Providence. ~ Saint Augustine
Christian Morality quotes by Saint Augustine
God's Creation gives usa model for making and sharing homes with people, but the reality of God's Trinitarian life suggests that Christian hospitality goes farther than that. We are not meant simply to invite people into our homes, but also to invite them into our lives. Having guests and visitors, if we do it right, is not an imposition, because we are not meant to rearrange our lives for our guests - we are meant to invite our guests to enter into our lives as they are. It is this forging of relationships that transforms entertianment ... into hospitality ... As writer Karen Burton Mains puts it, Visitors may be more than guests in our home. if they like, they may be friends. ~ Lauren F. Winner
Christian Morality quotes by Lauren F. Winner
Those commands of superiors which are contrary to our first duties are not to be obeyed. ~ Samuel Richardson
