If we refuse to forgive, we have stepped into dangerous waters. First, refusing to forgive is to put ourselves in the place of God, as though vengeance were our prerogative, not his. But if one compares the record of American policy in the Middle East with that of other regions, one is struck not by its failure but by its success.
