If I were to list all the positive attributes about Ryan Lilly, I'd run out of superior adjectives to use. I mean seriously, how big do you think my vocabulary is? I only know about a hundred million words, and with that small of a sample size, how could I accurately describe someone as great as Ryan? Ryan is the most amazing guy I've ever met. Seriously, I'm insanely jealous and I just want to stab him. But I won't, because everybody loves Ryan, including me. Ryan is a big inspiration in my life. Not only is Ryan fiercely intelligent - on the level of Newton, da Vinci, and Nietzsche's mustache - but he is the most open, honest, and understanding guy I've ever met. He's the kind of guy who'd give you the shirt off his back if you asked. I know, because I'm wearing his shirt now. If you don't know who Ryan Lilly is, you soon will. He'll probably be one of the most talked about people in history, and just the other day I came across this quote from Pliny (I don't know how old Pliny is, so I don't know if it was Pliny the Older or Pliny the Younger) which said, "Everything good I have written about can be summed up in two words: Ryan Lilly." As we were wrapping up the book, I sat down and thought about all the lessons I'd learned over the past two years. I couldn't list them all, but here are a few:

Never complain about the price of a gift from your spouse--accept it with love and gratitude. You can't put a price on romance.

Take lots of videos, even of the mundane. You will forget the sound of your children's voices and you will miss your youth as much as theirs.

Celebrate every wedding anniversary.

Make time for dates. Hug your spouse every single morning. And always, ALWAYS, say "I love you."

Believe in your partner.

When you hit hard times as a couple, take a weekend away or at least a night out. The times that you least feel like doing it are likely the times that you need it the most.

Write love notes to your spouse, your children, and keep the ones they give you.

Don't expect a miniature pig to be an "easy" pet.

Live life looking forward with a goal of no regrets, so you can look back without them.

Be the friend you will need some day.

Often the most important thing you can do for another person is just showing up.

Question less and listen more.

Don't get too tied up in your plans for the future. No one really knows their future anyway.

Laugh at yourself, and with life.

People don't change their core character.

More often than not, the people around me weren't simply deciding to give up. They were living in a culture of dependency that had been passed down from birth. My mother and grandmother gave in to the culture. And they expected me to figure out the best way to live on that same track, to game the system and not even try to escape.

My friend Ben agrees. 'Most of the time, what you see in the housing projects are generations of families,' he says. 'People accustomed to this lifestyle. It becomes comfortable, so they don't move away, and even their children stay and raise kids in the same environment.' In neighborhoods like the ones where Ben and I grew up, there is no perceived incentive to advance. After all, the checks for housing and the food stamps and assistance arrive every month.

This is why the system must be reformed. Welfare should exist only for a certain period of time, unless you're disabled and can't physically work. It should not last for a generation or more. There are millions of jobs open, without enough people to fill them or, rather, without enough people who have the necessary skills and training. This is where the government should come in, providing incentives for real-world training and educating recipients about a life beyond government dependence. ~ Gianno Caldwell

In real life, if people think they know you well enough not only to say, 'It's Tuesday, Amy must be helping out at the library today,' but well enough to say to the librarian, after you've left the building, 'You know, Amy just loves reading to the four-year-olds, I think it's been such a comfort for her since her little boy died' - if they know you like that, you can do almost anything where they can't see you, and when they hear about it, they will, as we do, simply disbelieve the narrator. ~ Amy Bloom
