I am adamant that we must not cut back on funding of the teaching of the arts in the schools: music, painting, theater, dance, all of it. The great thing about the arts is that the only way you learn how to do it is by doing it. ~ David McCullough
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David McCullough
Above me I saw something I did not believe at first. Well above the haze layer of the earth's atmosphere were additonal faint thin bands of blue, sharply etched against the dark sky. They hovered over the earth like a succession of halos. ~ David G. Simons
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David G. Simons
It wasn't enough to pass him as we were heading to your house or cutting over to the library. Soon you had to have sightings in the halls too. Then sightings turned to spying, and spying to stalking. You could tell me how many pairs of jeans he owned before you officially knew his name. ~ David Levithan
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Levithan
Call me or I'll call you, but one of us will call, yes? What I mean is it's not a competition. You don't lose I you phone first. ~ David Nicholls
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Nicholls
The status quo was rote memorization and recitation in classrooms thronged with passive children who were sternly disciplined when they expressed individual needs. ~ David Guterson
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Guterson
Magicians lose the opportunity to experience a sense of wonder. ~ David Copperfield
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Copperfield
The extremes of who I'd love to be onstage are David Bowie, Prince, and, I don't know, Bjork. ~ Miguel
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Miguel
Hugh consoled me, saying, "Don't let it get to you. There are plenty of things you're good at."
When asked for some examples, he listed vacuuming and naming stuffed animals. He says he can probably come up with a few more, but he'll need some time to think. ~ David Sedaris
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Sedaris
I am a stranger. You do not need to lie to me or pretend. Only with friends do you need masks ~ David Gemmell
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Gemmell
But there are tears in my eyes and then I can't stop crying, stood there on that practice pitch in the dark, the tears rolling down my bloody cheeks, for once in my fucking life glad that I'm alone. ~ David Peace
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Peace
And tar is washing up onto the beaches - big globs of tar. And people are saying, 'Is that going to ruin our summer at the beach?' No, of course not. You take the big blobs of tar and you use them to hold down your blanket. ~ David Letterman
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Letterman
The good thing about being gay, though, I always believed, is that you didn't make anyone go to a wedding. Nobody wants to go to a wedding. Nobody. It kind of bothers me now that you have to go to gay weddings, too. I don't care. It's still a wedding. And I would give anybody double gifts if they would elope. ~ David Sedaris
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Sedaris
Hugh and I have been together for so long that in order to arouse extraordinary passion, we need to engage in physical combat. Once, he hit me on the back of the head with a broken wineglass, and I fell to the floor pretending to be unconscious. That was romantic, or would have been had he rushed to my side rather than stepping over my body to fetch the dustpan. ~ David Sedaris
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Sedaris
For every new feature we add, we take an old one out. A lot of big sites don't do that, and it's a problem. Twitter started as a beautifully simple product, but it's now going the same route as Facebook. The drive to innovate can overencumber and destroy a product. ~ David Karp
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Karp
Populists and isolationists ignore the tangible benefits that have resulted from our active international role during the past half-century. ~ David Rockefeller
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Rockefeller
People make their own luck. ~ David Liederman
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Liederman
When we criticize the suicidal for being selfish, we are actually criticizing them for not enduring their pain with grace and good manners. These are nice qualities; we may be correct to reproach average citizens for not having them. But to expect everyone in pain to have them is unrealistic. Bearing pain quietly is what moralists call a supererogatory act--an act that is above the call of duty. Expecting everyone to who is suicidal to behave in a way that is morally above average is simply abusive. ~ David L. Conroy
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David L. Conroy
The most pernicious of all taxes are the arbitrary. ~ David Hume
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Hume
Didier once told me, in a rambling, midnight dissertation, that a dream is the place where a wish and a fear meet. When the wish and the fear are exactly the same, he said, we call the dream a nightmare. ~ Gregory David Roberts
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Gregory David Roberts
What happens if the world ends?" Freddie said.
"Maybe it already has," I said, "and this is it. Now we have the opportunity to start over and try to do better this time around. ~ Shaun David Hutchinson
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Shaun David Hutchinson
You know I got kicked out of high school and I used to go to Hendrix concerts. I used to go see Marvin Gaye and B.B. King and so here I am on television as an actor playing the part of this really sweet wholesome all American boy. The reality was I had a much different kind of teenage life. ~ David Cassidy
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Cassidy
I do think stories are one of the best tools for communicating across any number of cultures. But I also think there are wildly successful leaders who are introverted, disciplined, lead via spreadsheets and goals, and might not "appear" to be a great leader ... but in retrospect, made a massive impact. ~ David Livermore
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Livermore
He wondered if there were other places in the universe where the rules of the living did not require feeding on each other - where wonder could be discovered without horror and learning the truth did not entail losing one's faith. ~ David Rhodes
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Rhodes
ON AUGUST 15, 1971, United States President Richard Nixon announced that foreign-held U.S. dollars would no longer be convertible into gold - thus stripping away the last vestige of the international gold standard.1 This was the end of a policy that had been effective since 1931, and confirmed by the Bretton Woods accords at the end of World War II: that while United States citizens might no longer be allowed to cash in their dollars for gold, all U.S. currency held outside the country was to be redeemable at the rate of $35 an ounce. By doing so, Nixon initiated the regime of free-floating currencies that continues to this day. ~ David Graeber
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Graeber
David Hudson was rising in the political field. As a senator from New York, he had it all – good looks, a well-known family name and the finances to go with it, but for David, it was never enough. He graduated from an Ivy League school at the top of his class, and his parents were political royalty in America so he grew up in the spotlight with all of the luxuries one could imagine. ~ Yolanda Richards
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Yolanda Richards
People are rarely as attractive in reality as they are in the eyes of the people who are in love with them. Which is, I suppose, as it should be. It's almost heartening to think that the attachment you have can define your perception as much as any other influence. ~ David Levithan
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Levithan
I played in garage bands and rock and roll bands when I was in junior high and high school and saw some of the great talents of all time in the local area where I lived. ~ David Cassidy
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Cassidy
I was brought up with beautiful music - Nat King Cole and Glen Miller from my dad, and my mum loved Judy Garland and Doris Day - brilliant stuff. Through my brothers and sisters I heard David Bowie and The Specials, The Carpenters, Meatloaf and The Rolling Stones. ~ Imelda May
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Imelda May
Beastie Boys and David Bowie are two of my favorite artists. ~ Anders Holm
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Anders Holm
It is he who endured every kind of suffering in all those who foreshadowed him. In Abel he was slain, in Isaac bound, in Jacob exiled, in Joseph sold, in Moses exposed to die. He was sacrificed in the Passover lamb, persecuted in David, dishonoured in the prophets. ~ Anonymous
Blumenkrantz David quotes by Anonymous
For me, the last few years of the postmodern era have seemed a bit like the way you feel when you're in high school and your parents go on a trip, and you throw a party. You get all your friends over and throw this wild disgusting fabulous party. For a while it's great, free and freeing, parental authority gone and overthrown, a cat's-away-let's-play Dionysian revel. But then time passes and the party gets louder and louder, and you run out of drugs, and nobody's got any money for more drugs, and things get broken and spilled, and there's cigarette burn on the couch, and you're the host and it's your house too, and you gradually start wishing your parents would come back and restore some fucking order in your house. It's not a perfect analogy, but the sense I get of my generation of writers and intellectuals or whatever is that it's 3:00 A.M. and the couch has several burn-holes and somebody's thrown up in the umbrella stand and we're wishing the revel would end. The postmodern founders' patricidal work was great, but patricide produces orphans, and no amount of revelry can make up for the fact that writers my age have been literary orphans throughout our formative years. We're kind of wishing some parents would come back. And of course we're uneasy about the fact that we wish they'd come back--I mean, what's wrong with us? Are we total pussies? Is there something about authority and limits we actually need? And then the uneasiest feeling of all, as we start gradually to real ~ David Foster Wallace
Blumenkrantz David quotes by David Foster Wallace
But at the best of times she feels like a character in a Muriel Spark novel - independent, bookish, sharp-minded, secretly romantic. ~ David Nicholls
