When there's a monster under your bed sometimes it really is best not to look. ~ Jocelynn Drake
Asylum Tales quotes by Jocelynn Drake
Abby's eyes seemed almost as vacant as those of the girl in the photograph. Then a shiver came over her and she blinked. Gently, almost affectionately, she put the picture back on the wall. She touched it one last time and said, Poor little bird. I wonder if she ever escaped her cage. ~ Madeleine Roux
Asylum Tales quotes by Madeleine Roux
The hours wear on, while the surreal atmosphere of the asylum does not wear off. ~ M.D. Elster
Asylum Tales quotes by M.D. Elster
I wanted that uncaring, 'here's your blood and guts and your fucked-up happy ending' fairy-tale voice... And it was perfect. There are no lessons in it. There's just this harsh, horrible world touched with beautiful magic, where shitty things happen. And they don't happen for a reason, or in threes, or in a way that looks like justice. They're set in a place that has no rules and doesn't want any. And the author's voice... is perfectly pitiless. She's like a war reporter who doesn't give a fuck. ~ Melissa Albert
Asylum Tales quotes by Melissa Albert
Before you enter the forest, you must leave your mind outside, because in the land of fairy tales there is no need for it! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Asylum Tales quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
We all need fairy tales to forget the tragedies and difficulties of life, even for a short time! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Asylum Tales quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
There is a kind of truth in everything, even fairytales. In fact, especially in fairytales ... The King understood it as he looked out from the roof of the Temple and saw the clouds flying past and the green fields far beneath him. He knew that some things are real whether you believe in them or not ...
(The Thirteenth King) ~ Elizabeth Hopkinson
Asylum Tales quotes by Elizabeth Hopkinson
It is possible that our race may be an accident, in a meaningless universe, living its brief life uncared-for, on this dark, cooling star: but even so
and all the more
what marvelous creatures we are! What fairy story, what tale from the Arabian Nights of the jinns, is a hundredth part as wonderful as this true fairy story of simians! It is so much more heartening, too, than the tales we invent. A universe capable of giving birth to many such accidents is
blind or not
a good world to live in, a promising universe. ~ Clarence Day Jr.
Asylum Tales quotes by Clarence Day Jr.
Just a minute," said Lobsang. "Who are you? Time has stopped, the world is given over to ... fairy tales and monsters, and there's a schoolteacher walking around?"
"Best kind of person to have," said Susan. "We don't like silliness. Anyway, I told you. I've inherited certain talents."
"Like living outside of time?"
"That's one of them."
"It's a weird talent for a schoolteacher!"
"Good for marking, though," said Susan calmly. ~ Terry Pratchett
Asylum Tales quotes by Terry Pratchett
( ... ) "to have a hairy heart" has passed into everyday wizarding language to describe a cold or unfeeling witch or wizard. ~ J.K. Rowling
Asylum Tales quotes by J.K. Rowling
We have a few old mouth-to-mouth tales; we exhume from old trunks and boxes and drawers letters without salutation or signature, in which men and women who once lived and breathed are now merely initials or nicknames out of some now incomprehensible affection which sound to us like Sanskrit or Chocktaw; we see dimly people, the people in whose living blood and seed we ourselves lay dormant and waiting, in this shadowy attenuation of time possessing now heroic proportions, performing their acts of simple passion and simple violence, impervious to time and inexplicable. ~ William Faulkner
Asylum Tales quotes by William Faulkner
When Dr. Mortimer had finished reading this singular narrative he pushed his spectacles up on his forehead and stared across at Mr. Sherlock Holmes. The latter yawned and tossed the end of his cigarette into the fire.
"Well?" said he.
"Do you not find it interesting?"
"To a collector of fairy-tales. ~ Arthur Conan Doyle
Asylum Tales quotes by Arthur Conan Doyle
The boys went off to fight with swords while girls had to learn dog barks and owl hoots. No wonder princesses were so impotent in fairy tales, she thought. If all they could do was smile, stand straight, and speak to squirrels, then what choice did they have but to wait for a boy to rescue them? ~ Soman Chainani
Asylum Tales quotes by Soman Chainani
Uh-uh, dude. I tried it your way with the dating and the girls and the kissing and the drama, and man, I didn't like it. Plus, my best friend is a walking cautionary tale of what happens to you when romantic relationships don't involve marriage. Like you always say, kafir, everything ends in breakup, divorce, or death. I want to narrow my misery options to divorce or death - that's all. ~ John Green
Asylum Tales quotes by John Green
Every day I searched for new songs, and it was like applying for asylum. I just needed someone to help me escape from all the silence. I just needed people saying words about all the things that hurt them. And maybe this is why Papi stopped listening to music, because it can make your body want to rebel. To speak up. And even that young I learned music can become a bridge between you and a total stranger. ~ Elizabeth Acevedo
Asylum Tales quotes by Elizabeth Acevedo
Myths, as compared with folk tales, are usually in a special category of seriousness: they are believed to have "really happened,"or to have some exceptional significance in explaining certain features of life, such as ritual. Again, whereas folk tales simply interchange motifs and develop variants, myths show an odd tendency to stick together and build up bigger structures. We have creation myths, fall and flood myths, metamorphose and dying-god myths. ~ Northrop Frye
Asylum Tales quotes by Northrop Frye
How does ANY male-identified person know he is a man? And does my answer really diverge greatly from how many men, trans or cisgender, would answer?

Transgender people are often said to have a 'narrative' to their lives; we're encouraged to see our journey toward recognizing our gender as a story with an articulable pattern. The truth is, though, that everyone's gender is a story; it's just that trans folks are more likely to be - perhaps I could say "are given the gift of having to be" - aware of it.

The story of becoming a man, a woman, or a person of any other gender often follows aspects of that most instinctual of story arcs: the hero's journey. For instance, my personal narrative was one of effort in seeking a transformative goal (a quest), assistance (tools provided by medicine, law, and intangible emotional support), and mentorship by those who went before me (guides). And my manhood was ultimately achieved through what could be considered rites of passage - which is to say a similar structure to communal cultural tales of how one achieves cisgender manhood. It's simply some details that vary.

I do see one key difference in how all this plays out, however: Trans men make this invisible process disconcertingly visible by flipping the variables. While a cisgender man may be born with certain inherent potentials to physically embody a manhood that others will acknowledge socially, he's not necessarily imbued with the demanding dri ~ Mitch Ellis
Asylum Tales quotes by Mitch Ellis
Here is the full list of the banned words I used: active homosexual; career women; Third World; blacks; Asians; Australasia; Bangalore; primitive African tribes; crippled; in a wheelchair; hare lip; ethnic minorities; handicapped; spinster; committed suicide; gypsies; Bombay; illegitimate daughter; air hostess; Siamese twins; Calcutta; deaf ears; illegal asylum seeker; province of Northern Ireland; grandmother; bachelor. ~ Rod Liddle
Asylum Tales quotes by Rod Liddle
The flower, as he saw it, ruled over evil; it absorbed in itself all innocently shed blood (that is why it is so red) all tears and all the gall of humanity. It was an awful and mysterious being, the antitheses of God, an Ahriman presenting a most unassuming and innocent appearance. It was necessary to break it off and kill it. But this was not all; it was also necessary not to permit it at its death to discharge its evil upon the world. ~ Vsevolod Garshin
Asylum Tales quotes by Vsevolod Garshin
BLACK WATER TALES: THE UNWANTED Volume 2 JeanNicole Rivers ~ Jean Nicole Rivers
Asylum Tales quotes by Jean Nicole Rivers
Goldenrod Moram had a first name that sounded like it belonged in the middle of a fairy tale, where she would be the dazzling princess in need of rescuing. ~ Sarvenaz Tash
Asylum Tales quotes by Sarvenaz Tash
A traditionalist's values are gleaned from all that is good in the past. ~ Fennel Hudson
Asylum Tales quotes by Fennel Hudson
As a reader, I tend not to get too much from tales of unrelenting grimness. ~ Greg Van Eekhout
Asylum Tales quotes by Greg Van Eekhout
Soon enough his head would be swimming with tales of derring-do and high adventure, tales of beautiful maidens kissed, of evildoers shot with pistols or fought with swords, of bags of gold, of diamonds as big as the tip of your thumb, of lost cities and of vast mountains, of steam-trains and clipper ships, of pampas, oceans, deserts, tundra. ~ Neil Gaiman
Asylum Tales quotes by Neil Gaiman
As a girl, I sat awestruck at the feet of Harriet Ne, author of 'Tales of Molokai'. It was she who used to say, 'I myself have seen it,' after telling a particularly hair-raising ghost story - a phrase that I borrowed for one of my titles. ~ Susanna Moore
Asylum Tales quotes by Susanna Moore
Yes, every evening. Your mother enjoyed it. That evening she chose Inkheart. She always did like tales of adventure – stories full of brightness and darkness. She could tell you the names of all King Arthur's knights, and she knew everything about Beowulf and Grendel, the ancient gods and the not-quite-so-ancient heroes. She liked pirate stories, too, but most of all she loved books that had at least a knight or a dragon or a fairy in them. She was always on the dragon's side, by the way. There didn't seem to be any of them in Inkheart, but there was any amount of brightness and darkness, fairies and goblins. Your mother liked goblins as well: hobgoblins, bugaboos, the Fenoderee, the folletti with their butterfly wings, she knew them all. So we gave you a pile of picture books, sat down on the rug beside you, and I began to read. ~ Cornelia Funke
Asylum Tales quotes by Cornelia Funke
Children need fairy tales, but it is just as essential that they have parents who tell them about their own lives, so that they can establish a relationship to the past. ~ Mark Kurlansky
Asylum Tales quotes by Mark Kurlansky
I think the most important word in this world is fuck, because every fucking individual is trying to find out someone they can fuck, either literally or not, go to university and students are more interested in who they can fuck, visit offices and people are showing who is more powerful to impress someone who lets them to fuck, talk to friends and if they are stupid enough to believe in god then they are marrying so they can fuck someone, if they are intelligent enough to not believe in fairy tales, still they are everyday visiting clubs, bars, parks to find someone to fuck, check google trends and you will find most people are looking for porn online, and those who aren't looking for fuck is because they are already fucking, there is this weird awkward race to fuck each other, and I am fucking tired of this. ~ Abdul Mueed
Asylum Tales quotes by Abdul Mueed
While we are being fascinated by the tales of famous serial killers and how they were brought to justice, the real serial killer goes about his business with hardly a thought to being caught. ~ Pat Brown
Asylum Tales quotes by Pat Brown
You send me all these roses.
Every time I think the last bouquet has arrived, finally, another turns up.
I'm running out of vases.
I didn't know roses came in so many colors.
You say they're the perfect symbols of love because they have thorns and love is pain.
I say life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
And you don't get it.
You say you love me, but you don't speak my language.
You don't even realize I'm an orchid girl. ~ Erin Morgenstern
Asylum Tales quotes by Erin Morgenstern
..These exhibitions, and the stories behind them, should also in due course have their own catalogs and novels. As visitors admire the objects and honor the memory of Füsun and Kemal, with due reverence, they will understand that, like the tales of Leyla and Mecnun or Hüsn and Așk, this is not simply a story of lovers, but of the entire realm, that is, of Istanbul. ~ Orhan Pamuk
Asylum Tales quotes by Orhan Pamuk
This country needs room to grow and expand. In all my own newspapers I read frightful tales of the shameful atrocities being perpetrated on our Democratic minorities in Maine and Vermont. My patience is almost at an end, and if provoked much further I will place both countries under American protection, even if I have to send in my tourists to start trouble so I'll have to send in a force to restore order. ~ Gracie Allen
Asylum Tales quotes by Gracie Allen
Yes, he knew it was crazy to be this obsessed over an encounter that had taken up maybe sixty seconds of his life. (Or had it been an hour and sixty seconds?) But what an encounter. His fingers still felt the bones and flesh through her sweater, his tongue still tasted her mysterious bitter-greens mouth, her voice still haunted him with that whispered 'Help me. ~ Molly Ringle
Asylum Tales quotes by Molly Ringle
But there were no faerie godmothers. There were only mothers and grandmothers, and there was no magic wand to wave over a person's heart and make it all better. The fairy tales lied ... Fucking Brothers Grimm. ~ Laurell K. Hamilton
Asylum Tales quotes by Laurell K. Hamilton
It looks like an asylum landed here," Andrew quipped, poking his head out of Oliver's pocket. "Ooh, I spot an ass-shaped tent."
"What? Seriously?" Sophie said, surprised. However, she was quick to look away. "Oh. You meant that kind of ass. Jeez, Andrew. ~ Zeinab Alayan
Asylum Tales quotes by Zeinab Alayan
I just read anything I could find. Fairy tales and mysteries and history and poetry. It didn't matter what it was. I would read it over and over and over again. The books, they helped keep me from losing my mind all together. ~ Tahereh Mafi
Asylum Tales quotes by Tahereh Mafi
In the old tales, kindness is the purest form of heroism. Find the character who meets the world with a big heart and an open hand and you have found your hero or heroine. ~ Tom McNeal
Asylum Tales quotes by Tom McNeal
To the average person, voices in your head may be worrisome, especially if you answer them out loud, but to a writer, these voices are what direct you to create the most wonderful tales. ~ Megan Denby
Asylum Tales quotes by Megan Denby
I've had a fairy tale life. I had a perfect family, a beautiful childhood, an incredible upbringing. I lived a lot of life but a lot of good life. ~ John Stamos
Asylum Tales quotes by John Stamos
The naive was only a part of my fairy tales; humor was the real salt in them. ~ Hans Christian Andersen
Asylum Tales quotes by Hans Christian Andersen
Our search for the human takes us too far, too 'deep', we seek it in the clouds or in mysteries, whereas it is waiting for us, besieging us on all sides. We will not find it in myths - although human facts carry with them a long and magnificent procession of legends, tales and songs, poems and dances. All we need do is simply to open our eyes, to leave the dark world of metaphysics and the false depths of the 'inner life' behind, and we will discover the immense human wealth that the humblest facts of everyday life contain. ~ Henri Lefebvre
Asylum Tales quotes by Henri Lefebvre
The naturalist worldview is a good way to feel grounded and feel part of something that isn't based on fairy tales. It's based on observable facts in the human and in the biological history of the planet. I think that can be a source for comfort. ~ Greg Graffin
Asylum Tales quotes by Greg Graffin
Swaggering in the coffee-houses and ruffling it in the streets were the men who had sailed with Frobisher and Drake and Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Hawkins, and Sir Richard Granville; had perhaps witnessed the heroic death of Sir Philip Sidney, at Zutphen; had served with Raleigh in Anjou, Picardy, Languedoc, in the Netherlands, in the Irish civil war; had taken part in the dispersion of the Spanish Armada, and in the bombardment of Cadiz; had filled their cups to the union of Scotland with England; had suffered shipwreck on the Barbary Coast, or had, by the fortune of war, felt the grip of the Spanish Inquisition; who could tell tales of the marvels seen in new-found America and the Indies, and, perhaps, like Captain John Smith, could mingle stories of the naive simplicity of the natives beyond the Atlantic, with charming narratives of the wars in Hungary, the beauties of the seraglio of the Grand Turk, and the barbaric pomp of the Khan of Tartary. ~ William Shakespeare
