Though I obviously have no proof of this, the one aspect of life that seems clear to me is that good people do whatever they believe is the right thing to do. Being virtuous is hard, not easy. The idea of doing good things simply because you're good seems like a zero-sum game; I'm not even sure those actions would still qualify as 'good,' since they'd merely be a function of normal behavior. Regardless of what kind of god you believe in--a loving god, a vengeful god, a capricious god, a snooty beret-wearing French god, or whatever--one has to assume that you can't be penalized for doing the things you believe to be truly righteous and just. Certainly, this creates some pretty glaring problems: Hitler may have thought he was serving God. Stalin may have thought he was serving God (or something vaguely similar). I'm certain Osama bin Laden was positive he was serving God. It's not hard to fathom that all of those maniacs were certain that what they were doing was right. Meanwhile, I constantly do things that I know are wrong; they're not on the same scale as incinerating Jews or blowing up skyscrapers, but my motivations might be worse. I have looked directly into the eyes of a woman I loved and told her lies for no reason, except that those lies would allow me to continue having sex with another woman I cared about less. This act did not kill 20 million Russian peasants, but it might be more 'diabolical' in a literal sense. If I died and found out I was going to hell and Stali ~ Chuck Klosterman
Act Did quotes by Chuck Klosterman
The Stamp Act was a direct tax imposed on the colonies by King George III. This act inevitably led to the American Revolution. Just as the Stamp Act did in 1765, Obamacare should act as a wake-up call. Chief Justice Roberts provides us with a similar call to action. ~ Rand Paul
Act Did quotes by Rand Paul
People talk about the Patriot Act that was passed immediately in the wake of September 11. What the Patriot Act did was break down the walls between the various agencies. ~ Robert Mueller
Act Did quotes by Robert Mueller
What the USA Freedom Act did is it did two things. Number one, it ended the federal government's bulk collection of phone metadata of millions of law-abiding citizens. ~ Ted Cruz
Act Did quotes by Ted Cruz
Congress did a good thing back in 1995 in passing the Deep Water Royalty Relief Act. That act did a simple thing. It provided automatic royalty relief for new leases for 5 years in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. ~ Bobby Jindal
Act Did quotes by Bobby Jindal
I certainly was performing before my writing was published, because I was performing when I was very young. And the thing is I'm very comfortable on stage, so a large portion of my act did come from ad-libs. ~ Ricky Jay
Act Did quotes by Ricky Jay
How we [Americans] move [on climate] will determine the international direction. To lead, we must act. ~ Eileen Claussen
Act Did quotes by Eileen Claussen
How many thought does the brain automatically deliver in a single day?"
"Seventy thousand"
"That's right. Do you act on seventy thousand thoughts a day?"
I shake my head.
"Of course you don't. This thought was one in seventy thousand. It's not special ~ Tamara Ireland Stone
Act Did quotes by Tamara Ireland Stone
I think to get society to act as a whole, people need inspiration. ~ Chip Giller
Act Did quotes by Chip Giller
A voluntary act to fill empty hours had become intensive labor streaked with the bad feelings that ride the skin like pollen when too much about one's neighbors is known. ~ Toni Morrison
Act Did quotes by Toni Morrison
Think, speak and act positively. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Act Did quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Faith is walking face-first and full-speed into the dark. If we truly knew all the answers in advance as to the meaning of life and the nature of God and the destiny of our souls, our belief would not be a leap of faith and it would not be a courageous act of humanity; it would just be ... a prudent insurance policy. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Act Did quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
The human act of blind faith, whether in a god or man, is both noble and tragic. Tragic, because it demands the sacrifice of the very essence of our intellect - the ability to question. ~ Vladimir Pozner
Act Did quotes by Vladimir Pozner
One of the worst things we could do is start to act now as though the attack of 9/11 is a thing of the past and will never be repeated. That's just not true. ~ Dick Cheney
Act Did quotes by Dick Cheney
Those who act on excitement act intermittently; this is hardly the way to avoid regression. Those whose understanding comes from emotional perceptions are as confused as they are enlightened; this is not a lamp that is constantly bright. ~ Zicheng Hong
Act Did quotes by Zicheng Hong
Finally, if life happened by chance on this earth and evolved upward, then it could seemingly happen elsewhere in the universe. But if, as we believe, human life resulted from a purposeful act of God, and if sin is inevitable for such beings, and if the human soul is the prize for which Satan and God do battle, then it hardly makes sense to have this same process repeated on countless other planets throughout the cosmos. ~ Dave Hunt
Act Did quotes by Dave Hunt
Her hands felt their way blindly along the ridges and canyons and defiles of the spine, the firm root-spread hillocks of the withers. She rolled her bony knuckles all along the fallen tree of scar tissue at the crest of the back, prying up its branches, loosening its teeth. And it must be having some effect: when she walked Pelter these days he wasn't the sour fellow he used to be, he was sportive, even funny. She had walked him this morning until the rising sun snagged in the hackberry thicket. As they swung around the barn, she took a carrot from her pocket and gave him the butt and noisily toothed the good half herself. He curvetted like a colt, squealed, and cow-kicked alarmingly near her groin. Okay, okay, she said, and handed it over. She was glad there was no man around just then to tell her to show that horse who was boss. When they were back in the stall and she turned to leave, she found he had taken he whole raincoat in his mouth and was chewing it--the one she was wearing. She twisted around with difficulty and pried it out of his mouth. He eyed her ironically. Just between us, is this the sort of horse act I really ought to discipline? she asked him, smoothing out her coat. I simply incline to your company, he replied. ~ Jaimy Gordon
Act Did quotes by Jaimy Gordon
To attempt to build up theories of art, or to form a new style, would be an act of supreme folly. It would be at once to reject the experiences and accumulated knowledge of thousands of years. On the contrary, we should regard as our inheritance all the successful labours of the past, not blindly following them, but employ simply as guides to find the true path. ~ Owen Jones Classics
Act Did quotes by Owen Jones Classics
The greatest reverence is due to a child! If you are contemplating a disgraceful act, despise not your child's tender years. ~ Juvenal
Act Did quotes by Juvenal
I have ever been opposed to banks, - opposed to internal improvements by the general government, - opposed to distribution of public lands among the states, - opposed to taking the power from the hands of the people, - opposed to special monopolies, - opposed to a protective tariff, - opposed to a latitudinal construction of the constitution, - opposed to slavery agitation and disunion. This is my democracy. Point to a single act of my public career not in keeping with these principles. ~ Sam Houston
Act Did quotes by Sam Houston
Our pointe shoes are our instruments. If something's wrong with my feet, all my mind goes there. I usually have six pairs ready. Soft shoes for one act, stiffer shoes for another, stronger shoes for a variation with a lot of turns. ~ Nina Ananiashvili
Act Did quotes by Nina Ananiashvili
Treating others with kindness is the first magical act the magician learns and the last one he masters. ~ Virgil*
Act Did quotes by Virgil*
The first is the result of a decision to act - to do something. This type of mistake is made with incomplete information, as it's impossible to have all the facts beforehand. This is to be encouraged. Fortune favors the bold. The second is the result of a decision of sloth - to not do something - wherein we refuse to change a bad situation out of fear despite having all the facts. This is how learning experiences become terminal punishments, bad relationships become bad marriages, and poor job choices become lifelong prison sentences. ~ Timothy Ferriss
Act Did quotes by Timothy Ferriss
The soul is presupposed as a ready-made agent, which displays such features as its acts and utterances, from which we can learn what it is, what sort of faculties and powers it possesses
all without being aware that the act and utterance of what the soul is really invests it with that character in our conception and makes it reach a higher stage of being than it explicitly had before. ~ Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
Act Did quotes by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
And then as I got older, see, I think a lot of times with comics, your life kind of permeates your act. Whatever is happening in your life is what's going on on stage. So if you're angry in your life, then that's going to be on stage. If you're looking for the guy that's just going to make you laugh for an hour and forget about, that's me. ~ Billy Gardell
Act Did quotes by Billy Gardell
My dread is for my show to be a nostalgia act. So the key to it is how do we keep it fresh? ~ Joan Baez
Act Did quotes by Joan Baez
A habit is a stable disposition to act in a certain way, good or evil. Virtues are good habits; vices are bad habits. ~ Peter Kreeft
Act Did quotes by Peter Kreeft
When I pursued an education in healing in the USA in 1984, I was told that I had the capacity to become a crownchakrahealer, a spiritual healer, to act as a channel and catalyst for spiritual energy from the 7th chakra through the heart. At that time I had no idea what a crownchakrahealer really was and since than it has been a continuous process during the last 17 years to deepen and develop my understanding about what a crownchakrahealer is. This process has resulted in a way of working I call "Synchronicity – Transmission of the Light", which uses healing and energy work from the Source on a formless level. With this way of working I have worked with groups up to 80 people. It is really a way of working, which goes around the ego and speaks directly to the heart. It allows a person to come in direct contact with his own inner being, with his own life source. With my intellect I still do not understand how this way of working functions. It is not a way of working, which can be understood on a method plane. It is a way of working, which relates directly to the heart and which can only be understood through insight and experience.
One participant in Gothenburg in Sweden described his experience of Synchronicity as being like a thousand suns suddenly had been lit in his own consciousness. He says: "It was like an inner explosion, an expansion of my own consciousness – and I felt only love for the other people in the room". ~ Swami Dhyan Giten
Act Did quotes by Swami Dhyan Giten
A man is a form of life that dreams in order to act and acts in order to dream. ~ W. H. Auden
Act Did quotes by W. H. Auden
Man, as the minister and interpreter of nature, is limited in act and understanding by his observation of the order of nature; neither his understanding nor his power extends further. ~ Francis Bacon
Act Did quotes by Francis Bacon
Whatever you are - be that;
Whatever you say - be true;
Straightforwardly act - be honest;
In fact be nobody else but you. ~ Unknown
Act Did quotes by Unknown
Seeing is an act of creation. ~ Thomas Walther
Act Did quotes by Thomas Walther
A Man's suicide is the ultimate violence he can fling against the granite circumstance he could not vanquish. Its a lonely and desperate act of supreme courage, not weakness. But it is also an admission of total failure, and the destruction of the self is the end of one person's struggle, an end where from there would be no rebirth or resurrection-nothing but the blackness, the impenetrable muck the hides everything, sometimes even the reason for death itself. ~ F. Sionil Jose
Act Did quotes by F. Sionil Jose
Political conflict rests to a very large extent on a universal ignorance of consequences, as the people who are benefited by any particular act or policy are rarely those who struggled for it, and the people who are injured are rarely those who opposed it. ~ Kenneth E. Boulding
Act Did quotes by Kenneth E. Boulding
It was as if whatever had happened had reached some kind of limit. It was like finding the gateway to the past unguarded, unforbidden because it didn't have to be. Built into the act of return finally was this glittering mosaic of doubt. Something like what Sauncho's colleagues in marine insurance liked to call inherent vice. ~ Thomas Pynchon
Act Did quotes by Thomas Pynchon
Fret not over the irretrievable, but ever act as if thy life were just begun. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Act Did quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
I'm always amazed at how much people 'get' when I'm performing overseas. I've never had to change my act on my international shows; I just make sure that I've taken some time to get to know the people in those countries before I perform. That's been really useful. ~ Russell Peters
Act Did quotes by Russell Peters
Joy doesn't betray but sustains activism. And when you face a politics that aspires to make you fearful, alienated and isolated, joy is a fine initial act of insurrection. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Act Did quotes by Rebecca Solnit
Here is what I'm trying to tell you: Adult isn't a noun, it's a verb. It's the act of making correctly those small decisions that fill our day. It is one that you can practice, and that can be done in concrete steps. And if you slip up and have Diet Coke for breakfast, no one busts in and snatches away your Adult card. Just move forward and have milk tomorrow. ~ Kelly Williams Brown
