I've quit writing screenplay [adaptations]. It's too much work. I don't look at writing a novel as work, because I only have to please myself. I have a good time sitting here by myself, thinking up situations and characters, getting them to talk - it's so satisfying. But screenwriting's different. You might think you're writing for yourself, but there are too many other people to please. ~ Elmore Leonard
Writing For Yourself quotes by Elmore Leonard
Writing is simply something you must do. It's rather like virtue in that it is its own reward. ~ Harper Lee
Writing For Yourself quotes by Harper Lee
I think you become a writer when you stop writing for yourself or your teachers and start thinking about readers. ~ Avi
Writing For Yourself quotes by Avi
I think all writers write for an audience. There is no such thing as writing for yourself. ~ William S. Burroughs
Writing For Yourself quotes by William S. Burroughs
For such a long time, when you're a writer, you really are just writing for yourself, and maybe a few friends. So it's really amazing when your book gets out there and more people are reading and responding to it. It really makes the world of the books feel real. ~ Cassandra Clare
Writing For Yourself quotes by Cassandra Clare
I could tell you, but you should never trust what someone says about themselves. It's something you need to see for yourself. ~ Maria La Serra
Writing For Yourself quotes by Maria La Serra
I think my voice worked out fine, but it was a lot of work for me. And I was very self-conscious about it. I was a bit self-conscious about writing lyrics too. ~ Jerry Harrison
Writing For Yourself quotes by Jerry Harrison
I do believe we are actors in our own dramas, which, moment by moment, we ourselves write; that we are characters in our own fictions or those devised for us by someone or something else. ~ Norman Lock
Writing For Yourself quotes by Norman Lock
I'm going to spend my life writing poems, turning them into music that will affect people and touch their hearts. I'm going to write the songs that people can't write for themselves. ~ Stevie Nicks
Writing For Yourself quotes by Stevie Nicks
Even though I always claimed that I didn't want to write about something - once I wasn't writing fiction, anyway; I think for me the change from fiction to poetry was that in fiction I was writing about something, in poetry I was writing something. ~ Vito Acconci
Writing For Yourself quotes by Vito Acconci
I write to tame and organise the thoughts that bubble in my head. I write for the part of me that's inconsolable and don't have the hands or the talent for painting, pottery or the piano. I write because it's proven more effective than screaming to communicate my personal truths. I write because publication provides the perfect payback for a painful childhood and because I'm addicted to alliteration, a glutton for grammar and ruled by the rule of three. I continue writing to discover where my imagination will take me; because if I stopped, I'd no longer be me. ~ Anne Goodwin
Writing For Yourself quotes by Anne Goodwin
If the boy who draws
lets you look over his shoulder.
If the poet
smiles
and shows you her words.
If the girl who sings for the shower only,
hums a song
in front of you.
Know that you're no longer a person
but the air
and dust
that fills their lungs.
When the world perishes,
and all things cease to exist,
you'll remain inside an ink stain,
a paint brush,
a song.

Poem N. 8 ~ Alaska Gold
Writing For Yourself quotes by Alaska Gold
The power of fictitious writing, for good as well as for evil, is a thing which ought most seriously to be reflected upon. ~ Harriet Beecher Stowe
Writing For Yourself quotes by Harriet Beecher Stowe
For those that love the world serve it in action, Grow rich, popular, and full of influence; And should they paint or write still is it action, The struggle of the fly in marmalade. ~ William Butler Yeats
Writing For Yourself quotes by William Butler Yeats
Mathematicians have been hiding and writing messages in the genetic code for a long time, but it's clear they were mathematicians and not biologists because, if you write long messages with the code that the mathematicians developed, it would more than likely lead to new proteins being synthesized with unknown functions. ~ Craig Venter
Writing For Yourself quotes by Craig Venter
Peter Rabbit, for all its gentle tininess, loudly proclaims that no story is worth the writing, no picture worth the making, if it is not a work of imagination. ~ Maurice Sendak
Writing For Yourself quotes by Maurice Sendak
Still, I kept writing. I had no guarantee that I would someday win awards for writing. Heavens, the only person during that time who seemed to think I could write something worth publishing was my loyal husband. But I always remembered the professor from graduate school who urged me to write and who recommended me for that first writing assignment in 1964. When I protested to Sara Little that I didn't want to add another mediocre writer to the world, she gently reminded me that if I didn't dare mediocrity, I would never write anything at all. ~ Katherine Paterson
Writing For Yourself quotes by Katherine Paterson
See that you are not what you believe yourself to be. Fight with all the strength at your disposal against the idea that you are nameable and describable. You are not. Refuse to think of this or that. There is no other way out of misery, which you have created for yourself through blind acceptance without investigation. Suffering is a call for inquiry, all pain needs investigation. Don't be lazy to think. ~ Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Writing For Yourself quotes by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
You hope for that with anything, but with a TV show, the writer and the actor being the right mix are more important than the actual writing of the pilot because you hope it's something that can have a long life. ~ Jake Kasdan
Writing For Yourself quotes by Jake Kasdan
If I had been asked to write 1,200 words for a newspaper tomorrow, on any subject, I would just do it rather than leave a white hole in the page. And I think it's a very healthy attitude to take to writing anything. ~ Tom Stoppard
Writing For Yourself quotes by Tom Stoppard
Most of what's known about religious practices in pre-Hispanic Mexico has come to us through a Catholic parish priest named Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón, one of the few who ever became fluent in the Nahuatl language. He spent the 1620s writing his "Treatise on the Superstitions and Heathen Customs that Today Live Among the Indians Native to This New Spain". He'd originally meant it to be something of a "field guide to the heathens" to help priests recognize and exterminate indigenous religious rites and their practitioners. In the process of his documentation, though, it's clear from his writings that Father Ruiz de Alarcón grew sympathetic. He was particularly fascinated with how Nahuatl people celebrated the sacred in ordinary objects, and encouraged living and spirit realities to meet up in the here and now. He noted that the concept of "death" as an ending did not exactly exist for them. When Aztec people left their bodies, they were presumed to be on an exciting trip through the ether. It wasn't something to cry about, except that the living still wanted to visit with them. People's sadness was not for the departed, but for themselves, and could be addressed through ritual visiting called Xantolo, an ordinary communion between the dead and the living. Mexican tradition still holds that Xantolo is always present in certain places and activities, including marigold fields, the cultivation of corn, the preparation of tamales and pan de muerto. Interestingly, farmers' markets ar ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Writing For Yourself quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
He had sunk into his love for Corbin with the inevitability of gravity. At unexpected moments, he would see Corbin and be caught breathless at the insistence of his need. When Corbin reached for him, he felt that need like magnets finding their way close enough to snap together. ~ Roan Parrish
Writing For Yourself quotes by Roan Parrish
I think people get satisfaction from living for a cause that's greater than themselves. They want to leave an imprint. By writing books, I'm trying to do that in a modest way. ~ Daniel H. Pink
Writing For Yourself quotes by Daniel H. Pink
Speech recognition is utterly crap for writing fiction. If you try reading a novel aloud you'll soon figure out why - written prose style is utterly unlike the spoken word. ~ Charles Stross
Writing For Yourself quotes by Charles Stross
You had to form for yourself a lucid language for the world, to overcome the battering of experience, to replace everyday life's pain and harshness and wretched dreariness with - no not with certainty but with an ignorance you could live with. Deep ignorance, but still a kind that knew its limits. The limits were crucial. ~ Gregory Benford
Writing For Yourself quotes by Gregory Benford
Advertising companies hire the very brightest, wittiest young people to write for them. Not one single sentence of it is worth repeating. Why? Because it wasn't meant. ~ Brenda Ueland
Writing For Yourself quotes by Brenda Ueland
Never, if you can possibly help it, write a novel. It is, in the first place, a thoroughly unsocial act. It makes one obnoxious to one's family and to one's friends. One sits about for many weeks, months, even years, in the worst cases, in a state of stupefaction. ~ Pearl S. Buck
Writing For Yourself quotes by Pearl S. Buck
Two hours of writing fiction leaves this writer completely drained. For those two hours he has been in a different place with totally different people. ~ Roald Dahl
Writing For Yourself quotes by Roald Dahl
I knew I wanted to work with Brad [Falchuk] and Ian [Brennan] again on something comedic, and we are having a blast writing SCREAM QUEENS. We hope to create a whole new genre - comedy-horror - and the idea is for every season to revolve around two female leads. ~ Ryan Murphy
Writing For Yourself quotes by Ryan Murphy
The fun of reading as "an exchange between consciousnesses, a way for human beings to talk to each other about stuff we can't normally talk about." ~ David Foster Wallace
Writing For Yourself quotes by David Foster Wallace
I have never yet gotten entirely over the feeling that a Yankee, on account of his peculiar teachings and bringing-up, is far inferior to the better class of Southern people. I do not believe the world ever saw or will ever again see, unless the millennium comes, such high state of civilization and culture and exalted virtue as was the Southern states prior to the war. I have yet to find one Yankee, thought I do not say there are none, who, when the money test is made, will not for his own interest do some small or little thing, and often mean thing, if it is to his advantage to do so.

Writing as I now do after the lapse of nearly 40 years (and years do soften, and old age ought to) one may somewhat judge my feeling about the Yankees when the war ended. ~ George Benjamin West
Writing For Yourself quotes by George Benjamin West
If it isn't for the writing, we've got nothing. Writers are the most important people in Hollywood. And we must never let them know it. ~ Irving Thalberg
Writing For Yourself quotes by Irving Thalberg
The first and most important thing of all, at least for writers today, is to strip language clean, to lay it bare down to the bone. ~ Ernest Hemingway,
Writing For Yourself quotes by Ernest Hemingway,
It ends when you're ready for a new beginning. ~ A.D. Posey
Writing For Yourself quotes by A.D. Posey
I'm usually writing or producing for other people. I'm like Burger King most of the time; I let people have it their way like "You want it like this? I'll give it to you like this." ~ Warryn Campbell
Writing For Yourself quotes by Warryn Campbell
My words of encouragement for teen girls suffering with eating disorders, self-harm, anything ... is to get help. It's the most important thing you can do for yourself, and it can change your life and potentially save your life. ~ Demi Lovato
Writing For Yourself quotes by Demi Lovato
I did have a child, and I was reading a lot of picture books to her, but at the same time writing a children's book was something that I'd been wanting to do for many years, pretty much since the start of my career. ~ Al Yankovic
