Sometimes silences are pregnant and sometimes not. It is hard to know what to make of the silence of much of the New Testament about the Lord's Supper. Perhaps it is simply an accident of time and circumstance. There was not a felt need to address the matter. What we should not likely conclude is that it was not seen as an important matter in the latter part of the first century A.D. What we can observe is that the Lord's Supper continued to be an in-home ceremony taken in the context of a fellowship meal. We also now know it was important in both Gentile and Jewish contexts in the church in the second half of the first century, and beyond. We see no evidence anywhere in this material that clerics of any kind are in charge of the meal and its distribution. Even in the Didache, prophets, who were mouthpieces for God, are only allowed to say the thanksgiving prayer as often as they like. The low ecclesiology, coupled with the ever-present eschatology, suggest that the Didache does indeed go back to the end of the first century A.D. But one precedent in the Didache does stand out: the Lord's Supper is for baptized Christians, and in particular for those who repent of their sins. We are on the way to the church of the Middle Ages in some respects, but we have not begun to localize or confine grace to the elements of the Lord's Supper itself and then have it controlled by clerics. ~ Ben Witherington III
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Ben Witherington III
To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do. ~ Victor Hugo

Without God, my internal compass is something more akin to a windmill in a hurricane. ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Craig D. Lounsbrough
May I be an enemy to no one and the friend of what abides eternally.
May I never quarrel with those nearest me, and be reconciled quickly if I should.
May I never plot evil against others, and if anyone plot evil against me,
may I escape unharmed and without the need to hurt anyone else.
May I love, seek and attain only what is good.
May I desire happiness for all and harbor envy for none.
May I never find joy in the misfortune of one who has wronged me.
May I never wait for the rebuke of others, but always rebuke myself until I make reparation.
May I gain no victory that harms me or my opponent.
May I reconcile friends who are mad at each other.
May I, insofar as I can, give all necessary help to my friends and to all who are in need.
May I never fail a friend in trouble.
May I be able to soften the pain of the
grief stricken and give them comforting words.
May I respect myself.
May I always maintain control of my emotions.
May I habituate myself to be gentle, and never angry with others because of circumstances.
May I never discuss the wicked or what they have done, but know good people and follow in their footsteps.
[Prayer to practice the Golden Rule] ~ Eusebius

Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Leonard Ravenhill
I've always had fond memories of cooking Thanksgiving. ~ Wylie Dufresne
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Wylie Dufresne
Now, in one of those utterly physical moments, when the soul takes a backseat to the digesting stomach, the skin enjoying a recent ablution and some fine linen, the mouth smoking, the eyes reveling in bare shoulders and bright lights, he repeated his prayer more indolently, doubting a miracle that would upset the psychological law of his fickleness, which was as impossible to flout as the physical laws of weight or death. ~ Marcel Proust
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Marcel Proust
A mothers Love is as deep and powerful as any ocean, in the depths of it forgiveness forever is found for her wandering child. ~ Raymond D. Longoria Jr.
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Raymond D. Longoria Jr.
David made no attempt to clothe his prayer (Psalm 51) with flowing rhetoric, for it is simply a series of brokenhearted sobs. He pleaded no extenuating circumstances and attempted no self-vindication. The magnitude of his sin is not toned down, but is freely acknowledged. Hear the broken sobs, expressed in vivid verbs: Have mercy! Cleanse! Blot out! Wash! Purge! Hide Your face from my sins! Create! Do not cast! Renew! Restore! Save! Open my lips!
Here is true confession, free from all sham and insincerity. Examine it in detail. ~ J. Oswald Sanders
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by J. Oswald Sanders
Prayer is not an act I perform, words I recite, a behavior I strive to maintain. It is a returning. It is a broken life finding healing, a misplaced soul recognizing home. ~ Micha Boyett
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Micha Boyett
One judge is coughing his life out into bloody handkerchiefs and the other is burying his wife, and you think this is how God answers your prayers? ~ Orson Scott Card
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Orson Scott Card
I'm in shock. Whitney was such an amazing artist. When I started my English career, I wanted to be like her. I loved her so much. My prayers go out to her daughter and to all of her family. ~ Celine Dion
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Celine Dion
Prayer is prayer, regardless of where you are. ~ Lisa Tawn Bergren
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Lisa Tawn Bergren
I used to listen to the monks repeating the Lord's Prayer; I wondered how they could continue to pray without misgiving to their heavenly father to give them their daily bread. Do children beseech their earthly father to give them sustenance? They expect him to do it, they neither feel gratitude to him for doing so nor need to, and we have only blame for a man who brings children into the world that he can't or won't provide for. It seemed to me that if an omnipotent creator was not prepared to provide for his creatures with the necessities, material and spiritual, of existence he'd have done better not to create them. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Ronan hadn't known anything about who Adam was then and, if possible, he'd known even less about who he himself was, but as they drove away from the boy with the bicycle, this was how it had begun: Ronan leaning back against his seat and closing his eyes and sending up a simple, inexplicable, desperate prayer to God: Please. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
of praise and prayer that has been going on for millennia and across all cultures. Not to try to inhabit them, while continuing to invent nonpsalmic "worship" based on our own feelings of the moment, risks being like a spoiled child who, ~ N. T. Wright
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by N. T. Wright
Prayer has the power to change mountains into highways. ~ Wesley L. Duewel
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Wesley L. Duewel
Fools! You think of "god" as a sentient being. God is the word used to represent a force. This force created nothing, it just helps things along. It does not answer prayers, although it may make you think of a way to solve a problem. It has the power to influence you, but not decide for you. ~ Diogenes
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Diogenes

I really like Thanksgiving turkey ... it does not take only time in Houston that you look at natural breasts. ~ Arnold Schwarzenegger
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Arnold Schwarzenegger
When God does not answer our prayers, the way we want Him to is because we ask according to our own will, and not His. God's will must be a part of our prayer language. ~ Danny L. Deaube
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Danny L. Deaube
Although experience has taught me to trust my feelings, I did not go inside to stand guard near her. She had asked me to wait on the bench. I had no intention of crossing her. Like most men, I find it mortifying to be ass-kicked by a woman who doesn't even weigh 110 pounds after Thanksgiving dinner. ~ Dean Koontz
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Dean Koontz
It is God who gives us the spirit of worship (Psalm 133:3), and it is what we know of God that produces this spirit of worship. We might say that worship is simply theology, doctrine, what we think about God, going into top gear! Instead of merely thinking about Him, we tell Him, in prayer and praise and song, how great and glorious we believe Him to be! ~ Sinclair B. Ferguson
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Sinclair B. Ferguson

I don't think science is totally true, because I've seen miracles happen through prayer. ~ Meredith Brooks
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Meredith Brooks
Prayer is naught but a rising desire of the heart into God by withdrawing of the heart from all earthly thoughts. ~ Walter Hilton
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Walter Hilton
That circular loop was fatal. Patsy giving them their Latin name, herpes zoster, describing how the pain attacked the line of the nerves, something Dilly knew beyond the Latin words when she had wept night after night, as they oozed and bled, when nothing, no tablet, no prayer, no interceding, could do anything for her, a punishment so acute that she often felt one half of her body was in mutiny against ~ Edna O'Brien
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Edna O'Brien
Prayer, perhaps more than any other activity, is the concrete expression of the fact that we are invited into a relationship with God. ~ John Ortberg Jr.
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by John Ortberg Jr.
Humankind, with its long history, is by now a corpse bound to a tree with the ropes of convention. If the ropes were cut, the corpse would simply fall to the ground. Prayer in one's mother tongue is a manifestation of that pathetic state."
-from "A Prayer in the Mother Tongue ~ Yasunari Kawabata
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Yasunari Kawabata
Inaugurals conventionally start with a history lesson and finish with a prayer. ~ Jonathan Raban
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Jonathan Raban
To a realized master, death and rebirth is in every breath. Death is that of body consciousness, ego and limits of the mind. Rebirth is that of the cosmic mind of being the Spirit. In this realization is liberation.

When awake as liberated, each prayer and each moment of meditation is for humanity as there is no more individual ego or identity left. Such realized masters continually gift humanity with the grace of higher consciousness- so that each of us attain our fullest potential in goodness. ~ Nandhiji
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Nandhiji
It is not particularly difficult to find thousands who will spend two or three hours a day in exercising, but if you ask them to bend their knees to God in five minutes of prayer they protest that it is too long. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Holy living is essential preparation for prayer. ~ Edward McKendree Bounds
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Edward McKendree Bounds
Everything starts from prayer. Without asking God for love, we cannot possess love and still less are we able to give it to others. Just as people today are speaking so much about the poor but they do not know or talk to the poor, we too cannot talk so much about prayer and yet not know how to pray. ~ Mother Teresa
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Mother Teresa
In 1949, Saul was thirteen. Never before had he seen his father cry. Suddenly, he realized that what he took to be his home - a two-bedroom apartment in a newly renovated brick building above Gertel's bakery - was to his father no more than a prop on someone else's stage, which could at any moment be struck and carried into the wings. In its absence, home was in the rhythm of the halakhah: the daily prayer, the weekly Sabbath, the annual holy days. In time was their culture. In time, not in space, was their home. ~ Chloe Benjamin
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Chloe Benjamin
At sacred-time, I will give birth to divine-twins in Jesus Name. Amen. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I would like you to accept only one prayer, and that is laughter, because when you are totally laughing you are in the present. You cannot laugh in the future and you cannot laugh in the past. All those people who have created this retarded humanity have taken away all juice, all laughter, all smiles, and dragged everybody into being inauthentic. And if you are inauthentic, insincere, you can never grow the seed that has been given to you by this great compassionate universe. ~ Rajneesh
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Rajneesh
You do not have to wait until you become a saint. [Prayer] is the way to become a saint. ~ Peter Kreeft
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Peter Kreeft
A devotee who can call on God while living a householder's life is a hero indeed. God thinks: 'He is blessed indeed who prays to me in the midst of his worldly duties. He is trying to find me, overcoming a great obstacle
pushing away, as it were, a huge block of stone weighing a ton. Such a man is a real hero. ~ Ramakrishna
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Ramakrishna
Saying a prayer won't make you a Christian. Placing your faith in Christ as your savior makes you a Christian. ~ Andy Stanley
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Andy Stanley
A man of discernment, meditating on the healing Divine Providence, bears with thanksgiving the misfortunes that come to him. He sees their causes in his own sins, and not in anyone else. But a mindless man, when he sins and receives the punishment for it, considers the cause of his misfortune to be God, or people, not understanding God's care for him. ~ Maximus The Confessor
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Maximus The Confessor
God has more powerful aways to show Himself than any human postulate.
And yet, a postulate is the highest form of prayer. ~ Robin Sacredfire
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Robin Sacredfire
When our whole life is one faith, hope, love, prayer and silence, a consecrated life always bound up in the Eucharist, then the 'urge' towards God springs ... ~ Pope John Paul II
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Pope John Paul II
Prayer is asking for rain and faith is carrying the umbrella. ~ Barbara Johnson
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Barbara Johnson
But when the springtime turns to dust
(A thousand shades of blood and rust)
And everything is ash and stone
(Contagion writ in blood and bone)
Then what exists to have and hold?
(What story, then, has not been told?)
Let this be my sacred vow
(O Mother Mary hear me now):
I will not fail, I will not fall
(Though Heaven, Hell and Chaos call).
We are the children of the Risen.
This world our home, this prayer our prison. ~ Mira Grant
Thanksgiving Prayer quotes by Mira Grant
Years ago I went to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem and did what all tourists there do: wrote some words on a scrap of paper that I tucked into a crevice in the wall. When I closed my eyes and touched my head to the warm stone, it came to me: "All language is prayer." This must be so. Who is it we are speaking to when we speak to anyone? To that person, and also past him or her to Out There. If there is language, it means there is the possibility of being heard, being met, being loved. And reaching out to be heard, met, or loved is a holy act. Language is holy. ~ Zoketsu Norman Fischer
