But a major factor in the discontent of Americans came with the decree of April 6, 1830, when the Mexican government in essence banned further American immigration into Texas and tried to control slavery. (For an account of how Texans opposed this decree at Fort Anahuac, see Texas History Features on the Texas Almanac website.) Austin protested that the prohibition against American immigration would not stop the flow of Anglos into Texas; it would stop only stable, prosperous Americans from coming. Austin's predictions were fulfilled. Illegal immigrants continued to come. By 1836, the estimated number of people in Texas had reached 35,000. ~ Elizabeth Cruce Alvarez
Texas History quotes by Elizabeth Cruce Alvarez
We're in a political depression - a great political depression ~ Chuck Todd
Texas History quotes by Chuck Todd
The incomparable Michael Jackson has made a bigger impact on music than any other artist in the history of music. He was magic. He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop! Life is not about how many breaths you take, but about how many moments in life that take your breath away. For anyone who has ever seen, felt or heard his art, we are all honored to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you, Michael. ~ Beyonce Knowles
Texas History quotes by Beyonce Knowles
There we stood. Elephants to our left, lions to our right, only a stone's throw from hippos and leopards, and what were they doing? Playing with a doodlebug.
Don't we all? Myriads of mighty angels encircle us, the presence of our Maker engulfs us, the witness of a thousand galaxies and constellations calls to us, the flowing tide of God's history carries us, the crowning of Christ as King of the universe awaits us, but we can't get our eyes off of the doodlebugs of life: paychecks, gadgets, vacations, and weekends. ~ Max Lucado
Texas History quotes by Max Lucado
The season of the world before us will be like no other in the history of mankind. Satan has unleashed every evil, every scheme, every blatant, vile perversion ever known to man in any generation. Just as this is the dispensation of the fullness of times, so it is also the dispensation of the fullness of evil. We and our wives and husbands, our children, and our members must find safety. There is no safety in the world: wealth cannot provide it, enforcement agencies cannot assure it, membership in this Church alone cannot bring it.
As the evil night darkens upon this generation, we must come to the temple for light and safety. In our temples we find quiet, sacred havens where the storm cannot penetrate to us. There are hosts of unseen sentinels watching over and guarding our temples. Angels attend every door. As it was in the days of Elisha, so it will be for us: "Those that be with us are more than they that be against us."
Before the Savior comes the world will darken. There will come a period of time where even the elect will lose hope if they do not come to the temples. The world will be so filled with evil that the righteous will only feel secure within these walls. The saints will come here not only to do vicarious work, but to find a haven of peace. They will long to bring their children here for safety's sake.
I believe we may well have living on the earth now or very soon the boy or babe who will be the prophet of the Church when the Savior comes. Thos ~ Vaughn J. Featherstone
Texas History quotes by Vaughn J. Featherstone
The whole history of modern poetry is a continuous commentary on the short text of philosophy: every art should become science, and every science should become art; poetry and philosophy should be united. ~ Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel
Texas History quotes by Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel
It was a distortion, a mercenary decision to create this parallel history in order to drive the movie for an American audience, Both my grandparents were officers in World War Two, and I would be personally offended if somebody distorted their achieve. ~ David Ayer
Texas History quotes by David Ayer
I can hear the Colonel - no land was ever acquired honestly in the history of the earth - but it does not make me feel any better. ~ Philipp Meyer
Texas History quotes by Philipp Meyer
They are so proud of Gibran. Probably the most overrated writer in history. I don't think any Lebanese has ever read him. If they had, they would keep their mouth fucking shut. ~ Rabih Alameddine
Texas History quotes by Rabih Alameddine
In the long term we can hope that religion will change the nature of man and reduce conflict. But history is not encouraging in this respect. The bloodiest wars in history have been religious wars. ~ Richard M. Nixon
Texas History quotes by Richard M. Nixon
God works to over throw the ungodly, and increasingly the world will come under the dominion of Christians, not by military aggression, but by godly labor, saving, in vestment, and orientation toward the future ... This is where history is going. The future belongs to the people of God, who obey His laws ~ David Chilton
Texas History quotes by David Chilton
In past ages, a war, almost by definition, was something that sooner or later came to an end, usually in unmistakable victory or defeat. In the past, also, war was one of the main instruments by which human societies were kept in touch with physical reality. All rulers in all ages have tried to impose a false view of the world upon their followers, but they could not afford to encourage any illusion that tended to impair military efficiency. So long as defeat meant the loss of independence, or some other result generally held to be undesirable, the precautions against defeat had to be serious. Physical facts could not be ignored. In philosophy, or religion, or ethics, or politics, two and two might make five, but when one was designing a gun or an aeroplane they had to make four. Inefficient nations were always conquered sooner or later, and the struggle for efficiency was inimical to illusions. Moreover, to be efficient it was necessary to be able to learn from the past, which meant having a fairly accurate idea of what had happened in the past. Newspapers and history books were, of course, always coloured and biased, but falsification of the kind that is practiced today would have been impossible. War was a sure safeguard of sanity, and so far as the ruling classes were concerned it was probably the most important of all safeguards. While wars could be won or lost, no ruling class could be completely irresponsible. ~ George Orwell
Texas History quotes by George Orwell
History teaches us that people who make the brave choices are heroes. We study history to know the stories of those who stood face-to-face with real villains and won. We study history so that when it's time for us to make the hard choice, we'll know that we can do it, too.
But then it hit him. History wasn't just about understanding the past. It was about understanding the future, his future. It was about having the tools to shape the future. And all he had to know was that when it came time for him to make choices, he would make the heroic choice, just as the greatest people throughout history had done. No matter what changed in the past, his future hadn't yet been written. He had to shape it, bit by bit.
- Dak ~ Jennifer A. Nielsen
Texas History quotes by Jennifer A. Nielsen
As the possibilities for straightforward photography seem to have become exhausted it has been the photographers who know about the history of art, not simply the history of photography, who have shaped important directions for the future. ~ Van Deren Coke
Texas History quotes by Van Deren Coke
Those of us who understand human history know the role taxation has played in shaping the destiny of mankind. The matter of taxes - more specifically, the right to tax - is clearly no stranger to controversy and has frequently served as the catalyst for revolutionary change. ~ Owen Arthur
Texas History quotes by Owen Arthur
Rapid expansion coupled with social stability is proof of Umar's incredible capabilities as a leader ~ Firas Alkhateeb
Texas History quotes by Firas Alkhateeb
Mr. Langdon, I did not ask if you believe what man says about God. I asked if you believed in God. There is a difference. Holy scripture is stories ... legends and history of man's quest to understand his own need for meaning. I am not asking you to pass judgment on literature. I am asking if you believe in God. When you lie out under the stars, do you sense the divine? Do you feel in your gut that you are staring up at the work of God's hands? ~ Dan Brown
Texas History quotes by Dan Brown
In other words, Hitler's soul life was not mature enough at that moment to maintain an awareness of himself and his surroundings when this alien entity entered him. During the following six months during a series of irregular meetings and discussions with Hitler, Walter Stein was to witness a maturing soul development in this enigmatic character through which he became more and more a conscious and responsive tool of the world-shattering purposes of the demonic Spirit which overshadowed him. 'I move like a sleep-walker where Providence dictates,' said Adolf Hitler at a press interview. ~ Trevor Ravenscroft
Texas History quotes by Trevor Ravenscroft
Social ascendency, innocently disguised as high fashion, good taste or prestigious expenditure, was the same the world over. ~ John Keay
Texas History quotes by John Keay
Among the many worlds which man did not receive as a gift of nature, but which he created with his own mind, the world of books is the greatest. Every child, scrawling his first letters on his slate and attempting to read for the first time, in so doing, enters an artificial and complicated world; to know the laws and rules of this world completely and to practice them perfectly, no single human life is long enough. Without words, without writing, and without books there would be no history, there could be no concept of humanity. And if anyone wants to try to enclose in a small space in a single house or single room, the history of the human spirit and to make it his own, he can only do this in the form of a collection of books. ~ Hermann Hesse
Texas History quotes by Hermann Hesse
Psychoanalysis can provide a theory of 'progress,' but only by viewing history as a neurosis. ~ Norman O. Brown
Texas History quotes by Norman O. Brown
Of course history is easily manipulated - though that makes it even more important for us to know what actually happened. ~ Antony Beevor
Texas History quotes by Antony Beevor
I've wanted you since Texas... ~ Cat Johnson
Texas History quotes by Cat Johnson
At this point, I see the unfortunate recipient of this impromptu history lecture begin to doze and I move on to my next unwilling victim. ~ Tom Parker Bowles
Texas History quotes by Tom Parker Bowles
The following is a list of statements made many years ago by experts in their fields. At the time they were said they sounded intelligent. With the passing of time, they sound idiotic. ~ Sean Covey
Texas History quotes by Sean Covey
George Stigler Nobel laureate and a leader of Chicago School was asked why there were no Nobel Prizes awarded in the other social sciences, sociology, psychology, history, etc. "Don't worry", Stigler said, "they have already have a Nobel Prize in ... Literature" ~ Robert Kuttner
Texas History quotes by Robert Kuttner
In the 1890s, when Freud was in the dawn of his career, he was struck by how many of his female patients were revealing childhood incest victimization to him. Freud concluded that child sexual abuse was one of the major causes of emotional disturbances in adult women and wrote a brilliant and humane paper called "The Aetiology of Hysteria." However, rather than receiving acclaim from his colleagues for his ground-breaking insights, Freud met with scorn. He was ridiculed for believing that men of excellent reputation (most of his patients came from upstanding homes) could be perpetrators of incest.
Within a few years, Freud buckled under this heavy pressure and recanted his conclusions. In their place he proposed the "Oedipus complex," which became the foundation of modern psychology. According to this theory any young girl actually desires sexual contact with her father, because she wants to compete with her mother to be the most special person in his life. Freud used this construct to conclude that the episodes of incestuous abuse his clients had revealed to him had never taken place; they were simply fantasies of events the women had wished for when they were children and that the women had come to believe were real. This construct started a hundred-year history in the mental health field of blaming victims for the abuse perpetrated on them and outright discrediting of women's and children's reports of mistreatment by men.
Once abuse was denied in this way, the st ~ Lundy Bancroft
Texas History quotes by Lundy Bancroft
Over the years, over the history of our country, liberals have stood on many of the right sides of the issues. ~ George Clooney
Texas History quotes by George Clooney
The new naval treaty permits the United States to spend a billion dollars on warships - a sum greater than has been accumulated by all our endowed institutions of learning in their entire history. Unintelligence could go no further! ... [In Great Britain, the situation is similar.] ... Until the figures are reversed, ... nations deceive themselves as to what they care about most. ~ Abraham Flexner
Texas History quotes by Abraham Flexner
History flung the accents on our names into the water when it took us across the Gulf of Siam thirty years ago. ~ Kim Thuy
Texas History quotes by Kim Thuy
The Sun Dagger appeared on the rock face directly above the Shaman's shadowed head. It dazzled within the shade as the sunlight slipped through a gap in the overhead slabs. The dagger cut slowly down the rock, slicing through the very center of the etched spiral.
"The middle of time," Chaco whispered to himself. ~ P.J. Parker
Texas History quotes by P.J. Parker
We are victims of our history and our present. They place too many obstacles in the way of love. And we cannot enjoy even our differences in peace. ~ Ama Ata Aidoo
Texas History quotes by Ama Ata Aidoo
The world at large is less inequitable today than at any time in history. Number of people in abject poverty, as a percentage, is at all-time low. ~ Bill Gates
Texas History quotes by Bill Gates
Amazingly, much of the best cartoon work was done early on in the medium's history. The early cartoonists, with no path before them, produced work of such sophistication, wit, and beauty that it increasingly seems to me that cartoon evolution is working backward. Comic strips are moving toward a primordial goo rather than away from it ... Not only can comics be more than we're getting today. but the comics already have been more than we're getting today. ~ Bill Watterson
Texas History quotes by Bill Watterson
History shows that Americans believe in doing the right thing. ~ Michael Franti
Texas History quotes by Michael Franti
It's actually quite common for presidents to believe that future generations will render a verdict on their presidencies that is more lasting or definitive than the judgments of their contemporaries. The reason is that although history is certainly "an argument without end" - we're still debating many age-old questions - time does help settle others. ~ David Greenberg
Texas History quotes by David Greenberg
Peter was struck by the scar's essential nature: it was not a disfigurement, it was a miracle. All the scars ever suffered by anyone in the whole of human history were not suffering but triumph: triumph against decay, triumph against death. ~ Michel Faber
Texas History quotes by Michel Faber
I was a journalism major, and I would take creative writing classes as part of that, but I would also look for opportunities to write stories for some of my other classes. So for my course in Scandinavian history, I asked if I could write historical fiction instead of term papers. Sometimes they'd say yes. ~ George R R Martin
Texas History quotes by George R R Martin
Throughout history, humankind has been resistant to change and to the acceptance of new ideas ... When Galileo discovered the moons of Jupiter, the astronomers of that time refused to accept or even to look at these satellites because the existence of these moons conflicted with their accepted beliefs. So it is now with psychiatrists and other therapists, who refuse to examine and evaluate the considerable evidence being gathered about survival after bodily death and about past life memories. Their eyes are tightly shut. ~ Brian Weiss
Texas History quotes by Brian Weiss
The extracellular genesis of cells in animals seemed to me, ever since the publication of the cell theory [of Schwann], just as unlikely as the spontaneous generation of organisms. These doubts produced my observations on the multiplication of blood cells by division in bird and mammalian embryos and on the division of muscle bundles in frog larvae. Since then I have continued these observations in frog larvae, where it is possible to follow the history of tissues back to segmentation. ~ Robert Remak
Texas History quotes by Robert Remak
History and societies do not crawl. They make jumps. They go from fracture to fracture, with a few vibrations in between. Yet we (and historians) like to believe in the predictable, small incremental progression. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Texas History quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Pound notes. Her previous pay packets had been so small she never received paper, only coins. Which she liked. Coins had heft and history. Their value was irrefutable. She liked the way they jingled in her purse. That was the song of solvency. The cheerful assurance that there would be food and comfort through the day. It was better than any hymn. ~ Sarah Jane Stratford
Texas History quotes by Sarah Jane Stratford
Very few opera singers in history have been able to cross into popular music. ~ Renee Fleming
Texas History quotes by Renee Fleming
The more abstract the truth you wish to teach, the more you need to seduce the senses to it. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
