My feeling is that it's one of the very few things that comics can do that you really can't do in any other medium. I feel like the reader accepts all of these styles, and after a certain point you can flip the pages and see a character rendered very differently than you saw on an earlier page, and it's not jarring. It suggests things that you can't suggest just in the writing or in the plotting. ~ Daniel Clowes
Mediums quotes by Daniel Clowes
I tried to, from my very early years, I've been an inveterate movie goer and still am and I, I love the medium. So what I, what I draw and what I'm still doing, is part of that particular orientation. ~ Jack Kirby
Mediums quotes by Jack Kirby
We can't spend all day trying to get the performance exactly right and you just have to accept that and move on and accept the medium that you're working in and you know, there's a beauty in working under constraints and limitations. I think a lot of great things can come out of that. ~ Emily Deschanel
Mediums quotes by Emily Deschanel
Film is a truly magical medium. ~ Tom Savini
Mediums quotes by Tom Savini
Six months is the most you can ask of any fan in this day and age, with the Internet and all these new artists. I understand that my music is in a lot of mediums. Some people want me to make an R&B album. Some people want me to never sing again. I just don't want people to be able to draw comparisons between my old songs and my new ones. ~ Drake
Mediums quotes by Drake
Although my everyday artwork is tattoo oriented, I definitely do not try to limit my art or art mediums. ~ William Webb
Mediums quotes by William Webb
How long shall we Spiritualists be turned over like so many scapegoats to the unbelievers, by cheating mediums and speculating prophets? ~ H. P. Blavatsky
Mediums quotes by H. P. Blavatsky
To me, watercolor is a Western medium, so when I feel like I am using a Western manner I will use English to sign my name. ~ Liu Dan
Mediums quotes by Liu Dan
I feel like I understood the language of comics. I had a real fluidity with that medium at a very early age. ~ Daniel Clowes
Mediums quotes by Daniel Clowes
I love the medium of photography, for with its unique realism it gives me the power to go beyond conventional ways of seeing and understanding and say, This is real, too. ~ Wynn Bullock
Mediums quotes by Wynn Bullock
In the 30 years of my career, I have explored all possible mediums, except radio. ~ Kabir Bedi
Mediums quotes by Kabir Bedi
Because watercolor actually moves on the paper, it is the most active of all mediums, almost a performance art. ~ Nita Engle
Mediums quotes by Nita Engle
Well, we look for sources of inspiration in pop culture in general. It's very important for us that, when it comes to storytelling, we don't look into other video games. We'd rather look into other mediums
movies, television series and books
for sources of inspiration. ~ Sam Lake
Mediums quotes by Sam Lake
Photography's central role is to be the absolute medium of the day. It is fantastic that there is no longer any technical intimidation. ~ Martin Parr
Mediums quotes by Martin Parr
I've always seen it to be a privilege to make movies. It's a really expensive, creative medium. ~ Denzel Washington
Mediums quotes by Denzel Washington
Television should be the last mass communication medium to be naively designed and put into the world without a surgeon-general's warning. ~ Alan Kay
Mediums quotes by Alan Kay
I don't think comedians take advantage of the fact that television and film are visual mediums. ~ Eric Andre
Mediums quotes by Eric Andre
I believe that acting in any medium is the same thing, it's discovering the truth in where you are. ~ Victor Garber
Mediums quotes by Victor Garber
Film and television is just a different technique in terms of how to approach the camera but basically the job is the same; but what you learn as a craft in theater, you can then learn to translate that into any mediums. ~ Joe Morton
Mediums quotes by Joe Morton
I was drawn to photography as an extension of film, and the beauty of film is that it's a sensuous, fetishistic medium. ~ Anton Yelchin
Mediums quotes by Anton Yelchin
I love working with my hands. The computer has taken over my life in a way that makes me really uncomfortable. I'm trying to find a happy medium that gives me freedom but also still goes back to the idea of craft. ~ Matana Roberts
Mediums quotes by Matana Roberts
An artist's job is to inspire, from the Latin inspirare: to breathe into. The primary function of art is to inspire new thought shaped by emotions using the creative mediums we master - be it painting, music, design, craft, or photography. ~ Anonymous
Mediums quotes by Anonymous
I go through about two Fender mediums a night because I don't pick straight down; it's sort of sideways, and it shaves them off. ~ Robin Trower
Mediums quotes by Robin Trower
Some writers are curiously unmusical. I don't get it. I don't get them. For me, music is essential. I always have music on when I'm doing well. Writing and music are two different mediums, but musical phrases can give you sentences that you didn't think you ever had. ~ Barry Hannah
Mediums quotes by Barry Hannah
The moral life of man forms part of the subject matter of the artist, but the morality of art consists in the perfect use of an imperfect medium. ~ Oscar Wilde
Mediums quotes by Oscar Wilde
I think if you've got a good idea it will stand out in one of the different mediums. For example, something might happen to me today and it could be something to talk about tomorrow on the radio, or I can write about it, or perhaps it will be best suited to telly. ~ Danny Wallace
Mediums quotes by Danny Wallace
The medium of podcasting and the personal nature of it, the relationship you build with your listeners and the relationship they have with you - they could be just sitting there, chuckling and listening ... there's nothing like that. ~ Marc Maron
Mediums quotes by Marc Maron
I think the genre of comics sometimes overtakes the medium, and people assume that they are kind of frivolous. If you have a good, strong story teller, they can be as affecting as any character in literature. Period. ~ Chip Kidd
Mediums quotes by Chip Kidd
Trends in culture all serve a purpose and that's always indicative in fashion and music, you can always tell what's going on culturally in the mindset of the young generation if you look at those mediums. ~ Marina And The Diamonds
Mediums quotes by Marina And The Diamonds
I'm very interested in clans and the way people group together, and there's a lot of group shots. There's a lot of people in positions that people feel like they're in attack mode, kind of pointed at each other in the frame. I'm not a big fan of shooting something that looks like it could belong in any movie, I'm not a fan of okay, "wide shot, wide shot, medium shot, close-up, close-up, we'll figure it out in post." I hate that. ~ Justin Simien
Mediums quotes by Justin Simien
Although the Irish language is connected with the many recollections that twine around the hearts of Irishmen, yet the superior utility of the English tongue, as the medium of all modern communication, is so great that I can witness without a sigh the gradual decline of the Irish language. ~ Daniel O'Connell
Mediums quotes by Daniel O'Connell
I've been doing stand-up just about every night since I started in 1989. It's my home base. But I'm into doing comedy in all mediums, platforms and situations. ~ Judah Friedlander
Mediums quotes by Judah Friedlander
If you view computer designers as artists, they're really into more of an art form that can be mass-produced, like records, or like prints, than they are into fine arts. They want something where they can express themselves to a large number of people through their medium, and their medium is technology and manufacturing. ~ Steve Jobs
Mediums quotes by Steve Jobs
I'd love to do more TV, but I'd love to get into more feature films. I'd also love to go back to the stage when the time and opportunity is right. I haven't gotten to do a lot of that here in L.A., but my favorite thing to do is live theatre. I'd love to actually have a career where you can kind of move in and out of all of those mediums. ~ Mariana Klaveno
Mediums quotes by Mariana Klaveno
There is no knowing beyond that membrane, the meniscus of death. What can be seen from here is distorted, refracted. All we can know are those untrustworthy glimpses
that and rumour. The prattle. The dead gossip: it is the reverberation of that gossip against the surface tension of death that the better mediums hear. It is like listening to whispered secrets through a toilet door. It is a crude and muffled susurrus. ~ China Mieville
Mediums quotes by China Mieville
There are no inherent limitations to the medium. There are just differences. ~ Bill Henson
Mediums quotes by Bill Henson
My medium is prose, not the novel. ~ David Shields
Mediums quotes by David Shields
Films are born from screenplays and they are guided by words. They are born very limited and there is no space for real creation: graphic creation, pictorial creation, or audiovisual creation. If we really want to use the art of animation with all its strength, we have to rethink the processes by which it's made because the medium is the message. ~ Alex Abreu
Mediums quotes by Alex Abreu
I think pornography is a very rich medium, and I've studied it closely and learned quite a lot as a writer from it. ~ Dennis Cooper
Mediums quotes by Dennis Cooper
Watercolor is an alchemical medium - colors mixing with water, joining with it, being extended by it - creating new life where none had been before. ~ Joseph Raffael
Mediums quotes by Joseph Raffael
There does seem to be a sense in which physics has gone beyond what human intuition can understand. We shouldn't be too surprised about that because we're evolved to understand things that move at a medium pace at a medium scale. We can't cope with the very tiny scale of quantum physics or the very large scale of relativity. ~ Richard Dawkins
Mediums quotes by Richard Dawkins
Maybe black and white is the best medium for landscapes, I don't know. ~ Fay Godwin
Mediums quotes by Fay Godwin
On the subject of the feminist business, I just never think ... of qualities which are specifically feminine or masculine. I suppose I divide people into two classes: the Irksome and the Non-Irksome without regard to sex. Yes and there are the Medium Irksome and the Rare Irksome. ~ Flannery O'Connor
Mediums quotes by Flannery O'Connor
I like to work in watercolor, with as little under-drawing as I can get away with. I like the unpredictability of a medium which is affected as much by humidity, gravity, the way that heavier particles in the wash settle into the undulations of the paper surface, as by whatever I wish to do with it. In other mediums you have more control, you are responsible for every mark on the page - but with watercolor you are in a dialogue with the paint, it responds to you and you respond to it in turn. Printmaking is also like this, it has an unpredictable element. This encourages an intuitive response, a spontaneity which allows magic to happen on the page. When I begin an illustration, I usually work up from small sketches - which indicate in a simple way something of the atmosphere or dynamics of an illustration; then I do drawings on a larger scale supported by studies from models - usually friends - if figures play a large part in the picture. When I've reached a stage where the drawing looks good enough I'll transfer it to watercolor paper, but I like to leave as much unresolved as possible before starting to put on washes. This allows for an interaction with the medium itself, a dialogue between me and the paint. Otherwise it is too much like painting by number, or a one-sided conversation. ~ Alan Lee (artist)
Mediums quotes by Alan Lee (artist)
What works in one medium does not necessarily always work in the other. ~ Marc E. Platt
Mediums quotes by Marc E. Platt
We could all be mediums, and all have absolute knowledge, if the bright light of our ego consciousness would not dim it. ~ Marie-Louise Von Franz
Mediums quotes by Marie-Louise Von Franz
The theatre, for all its artifices, depicts life in a sense more truly than history, because the medium has a kindred movement to that of real life, though an artificial setting and form. ~ George Santayana
Mediums quotes by George Santayana
We don't ask why God chose as his prophet a stutterer with a public speaking phobia. But we should. The book of Exodus is short on explication, but its stories suggest that introversion plays yin to the yang of extroversion; that the medium is not always the message; and that people followed Moses because his words were thoughtful, not because he spoke them well. ~ Susan Cain
Mediums quotes by Susan Cain
Film is the manipulative medium par excellence. When you think back on the history of film and the 20th century, you see the propaganda that's been made. So there are moral demands on the director to treat the spectators as seriously as he or she takes himself and not to see them merely as victims that can be manipulated to whatever ends they have. ~ Michael Haneke
Mediums quotes by Michael Haneke
I like working in any medium. Who's making it? How much do I like the story? Does it contribute something? ~ Marguerite Moreau
Mediums quotes by Marguerite Moreau
Language is material to shape and mold, not only a transparent or invisible medium for communication, business contracts, or telling stories. ~ Kenneth Goldsmith
Mediums quotes by Kenneth Goldsmith
Not to grow up properly is to retain our 'caterpillar' quality from childhood (where it is a virtue) into adulthood (where it becomes a vice). In childhood our credulity serves us well. It helps us to pack, with extraordinary rapidity, our skulls full of the wisdom of our parents and our ancestors. But if we don't grow out of it in the fullness of time, our caterpillar nature makes us a sitting target for astrologers, mediums, gurus, evangelists and quacks. The genius of the human child, mental caterpillar extraordinary, is for soaking up information and ideas, not for criticizing them. If critical faculties later grow it will be in spite of, not because of, the inclinations of childhood. The blotting paper of the child's brain is the unpromising seedbed, the base upon which later the sceptical attitude, like a struggling mustard plant, may possibly grow. We need to replace the automatic credulity of childhood with the constructive scepticism of adult science. ~ Richard Dawkins
Mediums quotes by Richard Dawkins
The dominant problem of pictorial art since the nineteen-fifties is photography, and, by extension, film and video. The basilisk eye of the camera has withered the pride of handworked mediums. Painting survives on a case-by-case basis, its successes amounting to special exemptions from a verdict of history. ~ Peter Schjeldahl
Mediums quotes by Peter Schjeldahl
I'm fundamentally not interested in the Fortune 500 companies - in US, Mexico, anywhere. The real backbones of economic growth are small and medium businesses. ~ Tom Peters
Mediums quotes by Tom Peters
Television [is] a high-impact medium. It does some things no other force can do-transmitting electronic pictures through the air. Still, as an explored, comprehensive medium, it is not a substitute for print. ~ Walter Cronkite
Mediums quotes by Walter Cronkite
I don't consider myself to be a painter. I think of myself as someone who has used the medium of painting in an attempt to extend - give an extra dimension to - the medium of words. It happens very often my writing with a pen is interrupted with my writing with a brush - but I think of both as writing. ~ Kenneth Patchen
Mediums quotes by Kenneth Patchen
Talk about painting: there's no point. By conveying a thing through the medium of language, you change it. You construct qualities that can be said, and you leave out the ones that can't be said but are always the most important. ~ Gerhard Richter
Mediums quotes by Gerhard Richter
Silence is never-ending speech. Vocal speech obstructs the other speech of silence. In silence one is in intimate contact with the surroundings. Language is only a medium for communicating one's thoughts to another. Silence is ever speaking. ~ Ramana Maharshi
Mediums quotes by Ramana Maharshi
Rap is my most used medium but I don't think I approach music like a rapper would. ~ Hoodie Allen
Mediums quotes by Hoodie Allen
I found ways to seal off the powdery surface of pastel so that gold leaf can adhere to it. Similarly, I found ways to roughen the texture of the gold leaf so pastel can be applied over it. ~ Doug Dawson
Mediums quotes by Doug Dawson
I'm not imprisoned in any one medium. In films I use techniques that are not necessarily what other directors attempt. When I write novels I also use techniques which can run counter to those that a novelist would use. ~ Philippe Claudel
Mediums quotes by Philippe Claudel
The internet is the most underutilized advertising medium that's out there. ~ Mary Meeker
Mediums quotes by Mary Meeker
Live theater is just an incredibly powerful medium, and I think anyone who goes, whether they know about it or not, if they see something that sort of fits with them, it's kind of hard to deny that they had a good time. ~ Harry Connick, Jr.
Mediums quotes by Harry Connick, Jr.
The comic book is not the book. the graphic novel is not the novel. The same, of course, is true of films and television. When we move a story from one medium to another, no matter how faithful we attempt to be, some changes are inevitable. Each medium has its own demands, own restrictions, its own way of telling a story. ~ George R R Martin
Mediums quotes by George R R Martin
I bristle a little when the argument for film gets put into the nostalgia ghetto. Film is still the highest quality and best-looking image capture medium available. I don't think it always will be. The digital image will get better, and it will eventually surpass the quality of the film image, but it isn't there yet. ~ Rian Johnson
Mediums quotes by Rian Johnson
I reviewed in thought the modern era of raps and apparitions, beginning with the knockings of 1848, at the hamlet of Hydesville, N.Y., and ending with grotesque phenomena at Cambridge, Mass.; I evoked the anklebones and other anatomical castanets of the Fox sisters (as described by the sages of the University of Buffalo ); the mysteriously uniform type of delicate adolescent in bleak Epworth or Tedworth, radiating the same disturbances as in old Peru; solemn Victorian orgies with roses falling and accordions floating to the strains of sacred music; professional imposters regurgitating moist cheesecloth; Mr. Duncan, a lady medium's dignified husband, who, when asked if he would submit to a search, excused himself on the ground of soiled underwear; old Alfred Russel Wallace, the naive naturalist, refusing to believe that the white form with bare feet and unperforated earlobes before him, at a private pandemonium in Boston, could be prim Miss Cook whom he had just seen asleep, in her curtained corner, all dressed in black, wearing laced-up boots and earrings; two other investigators, small, puny, but reasonably intelligent and active men, closely clinging with arms and legs about Eusapia, a large, plump elderly female reeking of garlic, who still managed to fool them; and the skeptical and embarrassed magician, instructed by charming young Margery's "control" not to get lost in the bathrobe's lining but to follow up the left stocking until he reached the bare thigh - upon the wa ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Mediums quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
The internet is an amazing medium for languages, ~ David Crystal
Mediums quotes by David Crystal
The biggest challenge for any craft person or artist is to accept the constraints of their medium and make something beautiful despite them. That's kind of fun, actually. ~ Ayelet Waldman
Mediums quotes by Ayelet Waldman
The rise of the Net and the Web represents a victory for the counterculture and the subculture. The next generation, raised on the Net as their primary medium, won't even know what consensus reality is. ~ R.U. Sirius
Mediums quotes by R.U. Sirius
A generous friendship no cold medium knows,
Burns with one love, with one resentment glows;
One should our interests and our passions be,
My friend must hate the man that injures me. ~ Homer
Mediums quotes by Homer
I have to say that as an actor, I really look for the role. I'm not really looking to see if it's for television or film, because there are highly talented people in both mediums. ~ Amy Smart
Mediums quotes by Amy Smart
The directors that I end up having a really good time with are the ones that understand the fluidity of the medium and are interested in catching lightning in a bottle. ~ Oliver Platt
Mediums quotes by Oliver Platt
That is the thing I'm most grateful for in this industry to be able to spin in those different mediums, with television, film and the stage - at this stage of the game. ~ Blair Underwood
Mediums quotes by Blair Underwood
Like Frankenweenie is a story about a boy and his dog, Big Fish is the story of a father and his son, and all those conversations you can't have. It's universal, in a way that can go from one medium to another medium. That's been the funnest, figuring out what we can do in a Broadway show that's unique and special. ~ John August
Mediums quotes by John August
It always amazes me that just when I think there's nothing left to do in photography and that all permutations and possibilities have been exhausted, someone comes along and puts the medium to new use, and makes it his or her own, yanks it out of this kind of amateur status, and makes it as profound and as moving and as formally interesting as any other medium. ~ Chuck Close
Mediums quotes by Chuck Close
Like JJ Abrams, creators just want to tell a story and entertain people. So why only focus in one way of telling it?Give readers another way to connect with your story. Entertainment does not need to be contained in one medium. Think about telling your story in many mediums. ~ Anne-Rae Vasquez
Mediums quotes by Anne-Rae Vasquez
I think my favorite medium is music, with my main tools being my voice and a guitar. But I do find every other medium extremely fulfilling and useful in helping everything I do. Sometimes I need to make a song just for a comic. All of the art and mediums are connected for me. ~ Gerard Way
Mediums quotes by Gerard Way
Picture books are an emotional medium. They need to make us feel something. ~ Marla Frazee
Mediums quotes by Marla Frazee
Let's face facts, this is visual medium, there's a very high premium put on people who are good-looking. But the minute you rely on that you get yourself in trouble. You certainly don't make a career out of that anymore as an actor. ~ Alec Baldwin
Mediums quotes by Alec Baldwin
I always think that art is one of the most wonderful exciting curious ways to learn. I have no worries or apologies about art being used as a teaching medium. ~ Peter Greenaway
Mediums quotes by Peter Greenaway
When I'm listening to stuff on the computer or through a horrible little speaker on my phone, and then I hear the real version with the bass and everything, I sometimes don't like it as much. I definitely believe that any medium is viable in that respect. ~ Kevin Shields
Mediums quotes by Kevin Shields
I would not have made any of my films or written scripts such as Taxi Driver had it not been for Ingmar Bergman, What he has left is a legacy greater than any other director ... I think the extraordinary thing that Bergman will be remembered for, other than his body of work, was that he probably did more than anyone to make cinema a medium of personal and introspective value. ~ Paul Schrader
Mediums quotes by Paul Schrader
I guess the ultimate luxury professionally is to be able to change your direction, to work in another medium. ~ Paul McCartney
Mediums quotes by Paul McCartney
The fact that certain composers have been able to create first-class music within the medium of film proves that film music can be as good as the composer is gifted. ~ Jerry Goldsmith
Mediums quotes by Jerry Goldsmith
I think I'm becoming more relaxed in front of a camera. I suppose I'll always feel slightly more at home on stage. It's more of an actor's medium. You are your own editor, nobody else is choosing what is being seen of you. ~ Michael Sheen
Mediums quotes by Michael Sheen
We've seen a massive attack on the freedom of the web. Governments are realizing the power of this medium to organize people and they are trying to clamp down across the world, not just in places like China and North Korea; we're seeing bills in the United States, in Italy, all across the world. ~ Sergey Brin
Mediums quotes by Sergey Brin
We would have been happy if we could have assigned just three categories, large, medium, and small; the point is, we wanted to avoid personal judgments. It actually turned out to be quite a finely tuned scale. ~ Charles Francis Richter
Mediums quotes by Charles Francis Richter
The idea of discussing psychological and philosophical ideas in a visual medium was really exciting to me. I thought I was going to go into philosophy ... and suddenly I found this way to combine that with my love for visual mediums. ~ Andrew Neel
Mediums quotes by Andrew Neel
It was Vikram Bhatt and 'Raaz' that got me interested in the medium of cinema. Before that, I was like any other youngster dabbling with various things - modelling, films - without a definite direction or focus. Now that I'm working with all of them, life has come full circle for me. ~ Bipasha Basu
Mediums quotes by Bipasha Basu
Truths are known to us in two ways: some are known directly, and of themselves; some through the medium of other truths. The former are the subject of Intuition, or Consciousness; 4 the latter, of Inference. ~ John Stuart Mill
Mediums quotes by John Stuart Mill
A lot of the ancient Norse myths and legends are the basis of a lot of the sci-fi, fantasy films out there. Telling these stories in a contemporary medium, it's all good. ~ Karl Urban
Mediums quotes by Karl Urban
Music appeals to me for what can be done with it. ~ Leopold Stokowski
Mediums quotes by Leopold Stokowski
I don't think film is the writer's medium, and so I was interested to see what a director would do with it. ~ Daniel Handler
Mediums quotes by Daniel Handler
For me, working on stage is much more exhausting than all the other mediums, but it's also much more thrilling. ~ John Lithgow
Mediums quotes by John Lithgow
Photography is the most transparent of the art mediums devised or discovered by man. It is probably for this reason that it proves so difficult to make the photograph transcend its almost inevitable function as document and act as a work of art as well. ~ Clement Greenberg
Mediums quotes by Clement Greenberg
There si nothing upon the face of the earth so insipid as a medium. Give me love or hate! A friend that will go to jail for me, or an enemy that will run me through the body! ~ Fanny Burney
Mediums quotes by Fanny Burney
Song is the licensed medium for bawling in public things too silly or sacred to be uttered in ordinary speech. ~ Oliver Herford
Mediums quotes by Oliver Herford
While it is democratically not permissible for an individual to own any information or publishing medium, all individuals have a natural right to self-expression by any means, even if such means were insane and meant to prove a person's insanity. ~ Muammar Al-Gaddafi
Mediums quotes by Muammar Al-Gaddafi
I think the goal with any writing, but especially narrative nonfiction, is to put the blockade of putting your thoughts in this unnatural medium of print and then trying to reach through that and actually convey what's going on, what you think, and make people laugh and recognize themselves while doing it. Definitely the laughing thing. ~ Sloane Crosley
Mediums quotes by Sloane Crosley
The 'content' of any medium is always another medium. ~ Marshall McLuhan
Mediums quotes by Marshall McLuhan
