My favorite of all was still the place on Vermont, the French cafe, La Lyonnaise, that had given me the best onion soup on that night with George and my father. The two owners hailed from France, from Lyon, before the city had boomed into a culinary sibling of Paris. Inside, it had only a few tables, and the waiters served everything out of order, and it had a B rating in the window, and they usually sat me right by the swinging kitchen door, but I didn't care about any of it.
There, I ordered chicken Dijon, or beef Bourguignon, or a simple green salad, or a pate sandwich, and when it came to the table, I melted into whatever arrived. I lavished in a forkful of spinach gratin on the side, at how delighted the chef had clearly been over the balance of spinach and cheese, like she was conducting a meeting of spinach and cheese, like a matchmaker who knew they would shortly fall in love. Sure, there were small distractions and preoccupations in it all, but I could find the food in there, the food was the center, and the person making the food was so connected with the food that I could really, for once, enjoy it. ~ Aimee Bender
Rose Edelstein quotes by Aimee Bender
My birthday is in March, and that year it fell during an especially bright spring week, vivid and clear in the narrow residential streets where we lived just a handful of blocks south of Sunset. The night-blooming jasmine that crawled up our neighborhood's front gate released its heady scent at dusk, and to the north, the hills rolled charmingly over the horizon, houses tucked into the brown. Soon, daylight savings time would arrive, and even at early nine, I associated my birthday with the first hint of summer, with the feeling in classrooms of open windows and lighter clothing and in a few months no more homework. My hair got lighter in spring, from light brown to nearly blond, almost like my mother's ponytail tassel. In the neighborhood gardens, the agapanthus plants started to push out their long green robot stems to open up to soft purples and blues. ~ Aimee Bender
Rose Edelstein quotes by Aimee Bender
He was the wind and she water, and together they created a cyclone. One fueled by extremes. Love and hate, the rose and the thorn, the desert and the ocean, fire and water, light and dark. ~ Donya Lynne
Rose Edelstein quotes by Donya Lynne
Hak Nam rose before her as she waded nearer, but with a dream's logic it grew no closer. Backwashing sea, sucking at her ankles. The Walled City is growing. Being grown. From the fabric of the beach, wrack and wreckage of the world before things changed. Unthinkable tonnage, dumped here by barge and bulk-lifter in the course of the great reconstruction. The minuscule bugs of Rodel-van Erp seethe there, lifting the iron-caged balconies that are sleeping rooms, countless unplanned windows throwing blank silver rectangles back against the fog. A thing of random human accretion, monstrous and superb, it is being reconstituted here, retranslated from its later incarnation as a realm of consensual fantasy. The ~ William Gibson
Rose Edelstein quotes by William Gibson
He fills me with horror and I do not hate him. How can I hate him, Raoul? Think of Erik at my feet, in the house on the lake, underground. He accuses himself, he curses himself, he implores my forgiveness! ... He confesses his cheat. He loves me! He lays at my feet an immense and tragic love ... He has carried me off for love! ... He has imprisoned me with him, underground, for love! ... But he respects me: he crawls, he moans, he weeps! ... And, when I stood up, Raoul, and told him that I could only despise him if he did not, then and there, give me my liberty ... he offered it ... he offered to show me the mysterious road ... Only ... only he rose too ... and I was made to remember that, though he was not an angel, nor a ghost, nor a genius, he remained the voice ... for he sang. And I listened ... and stayed! ... That night, we did not exchange another word. He sang me to sleep. ~ Gaston Leroux
Rose Edelstein quotes by Gaston Leroux
What Rose brings to the Doctor's life is completion. It's completing a circle – he's male, he's alien, he's a traveler. Between the two of them together they complement each other and discover each other. And are in love with each other – absolutely, unashamedly, unreservedly. ~ Russell T. Davies
Rose Edelstein quotes by Russell T. Davies
From the ashes, they rose, And burned once again. He never forgot her glow, And she never forgot him. ~ Brittainy C. Cherry
Rose Edelstein quotes by Brittainy C. Cherry
Leave before I have to rip your eyes out with my dull Lady Bic razor. ~ Rose Pressey
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rose Pressey
With its leaves so rich and heavy with elation and its crimson face made brighter with visions of divinity the shadow of a certain rose looks just like an angel eating light. ~ Aberjhani
Rose Edelstein quotes by Aberjhani
An oak is a tree. A rose is a flower. A deer is an animal. A sparrow is a bird. Russia is our fatherland. Death is inevitable.

P. Smirnovsky, A Textbook of Russian Grammar ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Rose Edelstein quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
They slept little that night, making their newfound love like people for whom the world is running out. Fern did not think of her Task, not because she had abandoned it, but because she felt it would present itself for her attention when the moment was right, and until then she had an intermission, a suspension of hostilities, given by whatever gods there were. They lay in the cave while outside the tide rose and fell, and she thought that in this life and maybe in all lives she would remember that love sounded like the sea, and the beat of her heart was waves on a beach, and she would hear its echo in the nucleus of every shell. ~ Jan Siegel
Rose Edelstein quotes by Jan Siegel
Let's go inside. I always find walking inside buildings has this bizarre effect on me. I immediately forget uncomfortable situations, like when tiny midget women straddle my best friend's boyfriend and face-rape him. ~ Frankie Rose
Rose Edelstein quotes by Frankie Rose
I don't care what it is, when it has an LCD screen, it makes it better. ~ Kevin Rose
Rose Edelstein quotes by Kevin Rose
I love Robin Wright. Kristin Wiig! I love those two women. ~ Kathleen Rose Perkins
Rose Edelstein quotes by Kathleen Rose Perkins
I am going to be pretty kick a$$ by the time I'm thirty, and I can't wait!! ~ Rose McGowan
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rose McGowan
There can be no barrenness in full summer. The very sand will yield something. Rocks will have mosses, and every rift will have its wind-flower, and every crevice a leaf; while from the fertile soil will be reared a gorgeous troop of growths, that will carry their life in ten thousand forms, but all with praise to God. And so it is when the soul knows its summer. Love redeems its weakness, clothes its barrenness, enriches its poverty, and makes its very desert to bud and blossom as the rose. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Rose Edelstein quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
It is poetic and lyrical; words that spill forth like cool waters into the dusty dry rock bed of the Soul desiring love. It has been said that I've lived in the desert all my life and do not know what it means to be wet. ~ Sophia Rose
Rose Edelstein quotes by Sophia Rose
Kanye West talks about being Axl Rose, being Kurt Cobain, being Jim Morrison. Adam Levine is selling acne ointment to teenagers. ~ Ian Astbury
Rose Edelstein quotes by Ian Astbury
Seems safe enough," Cal said, and Aislinn shrugged.
"Well, there you go," she said.
Without so much as a "Hey, try not to get killed," she turned back for the stone hut. I wouldn't let my eyes follow Aislinn. If I looked back, I was afraid I'd go running after her.
Instead I walked out to stand next to Cal. Underfoot, the surface gave slightly. Gingerly, we made our way down the watery road. "Brannicks and magic and hell, oh my," I joked, and Cal gave a snort of what might have been laughter.
I hit a particularly slipper spot and wobbled for a second before Cal grabbed my elbow. I didn't want it to be awkward, and I really didn't want my entire face to go red, but that's exactly what happened. I glanced up. Our eyes met, and Cal jerked his hand back so fast that he overbalanced. As he started to fall, I went to grab him, and the next thing I knew, we both went down. I hit the wall of water to my right, just as Cal slid to the left. I fell into the water, completely immersed, only to have it spit me back out onto the path.
I sat there, arms and legs akimbo, hair dripping water into my eyes. Cal sat opposite me, every bit as drenched, looking totally bewildered. Once again, we locked eyes.
And this time, we both burst out laughing.
"Oh God," I spluttered. "Your face!"
"My face?" he said, his laughter dwindling to a chuckle. "You should see your hair."
He rose to his feet, leaning down to offer me a hand. I took it gratefully. Once I ~ Rachel Hawkins
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rachel Hawkins
Valentine's Day money-saving tips: Break up on February 13th, get back together on the 15th. In place of bubble bath, use lavender-scented dish-washing liquid. Forget rose petals. Sprinkle the bed with sliced beets! ~ David Letterman
Rose Edelstein quotes by David Letterman
News is like food: it is the cooking and serving that makes it acceptable, not the material itself. ~ Rose Macaulay
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rose Macaulay
And the sculptors will shape the soil for the writers to stretch the seeds
for the patient painters who sketch the petals they will shade in alabaster and gold. Their sweat is the rain. Maybe the jazzman will send us a rose. ~ Kristen Henderson
Rose Edelstein quotes by Kristen Henderson
Rose was sexy. It was my fantasy about her. She accomplished so much and came from so little in terms of a background that would have prepared her for the world, let alone the world of entertainment. ~ Linda Lavin
Rose Edelstein quotes by Linda Lavin
The great regret of my life is that I didn't have children. ~ Charlie Rose
Rose Edelstein quotes by Charlie Rose
This surprised him, her turning down his invitation to dine with him, and his face showed it. "Katie."
She rose. Their gazes locked for an extended moment. "Good luck, Shaw."
She hesitated for another second, long enough for him to say something to keep her there. Yet he remained quiet.
She turned and left.
Shaw sat there for several beats, a massive struggle going on inside his mind. Finally, he threw some euros on the table, hustled from the restaurant, and looked up and down the crowded street.
But Katie was already gone. ~ David Baldacci
Rose Edelstein quotes by David Baldacci
I love to smell like roses, literally all day! ~ Rachel Roy
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rachel Roy
People where you live grow five thousand roses in one garden ... yet they don't find what they are looking for. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Rose Edelstein quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
My long-crushed spirit rose, cowardice departed, bold defiance took its place; and I now resolved that, however long I might remain a slave in form, the day had passed forever when I could be a slave in fact. ~ Frederick Douglass
Rose Edelstein quotes by Frederick Douglass
A cavalry of sweaty but righteous blond gods chased pesky, unkempt people across an annoyingly leaky Mexican border. A grimy cowboy with a headdress of scrawny vultures lay facedown in fiery sands at the end of a trail of his own groveling claw marks, body flattened like a roadkill, his back a pincushion of Apache arrows. He rose and shook his head as if he had merely walked into a doorknob. Never mind John Wayne and his vultures and an "Oregon Trail" lined with the Mesozoic buttes of the Southwest, where the movies were filmed, or the Indians who were supposed to be northern plains Cheyenne but actually were Navajo extras in costume department Sioux war bonnets saying mischievous, naughty things in Navajo, a language neither filmmaker nor audience understood anyway, but which the interpreter onscreen translated as soberly as his forked tongue could manage, "Well give you three cents an acre." Never mind the ecologically incorrect arctic loon cries on the soundtrack. I loved that desert. ~ Ellen Meloy
Rose Edelstein quotes by Ellen Meloy
Don't worry know what you can't change. rest when you can so you'll be ready for tomorrows battle. ~ Richelle Mead
Rose Edelstein quotes by Richelle Mead
When I was in high school, I had already kind of been working in the industry and had done a couple of acting jobs. There were definitely some girls that were either jealous or thought I was a snob. I was just trying to be a teenage girl and go to high school and have fun like everybody else! ~ Jillian Rose Reed
Rose Edelstein quotes by Jillian Rose Reed
I made my decision as an informed adult - so deliberately informed that I ended up taking a whole course in pharmacology at Harvard, where I wrote my term paper on the neural mechanisms of stimulants and their impact on cognition and behavior (and, incidentally, it's so boring you would need stimulants to read it). ~ Todd Rose
Rose Edelstein quotes by Todd Rose
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but would not cost half as much during the winter months. ~ George Ade
Rose Edelstein quotes by George Ade
There's a lot of intensity when you're on a set. And then it just goes away and no one's giving you attention or flooding you with compliments. ~ Rose Byrne
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rose Byrne
There are more than one hundred thousand ships at sea carrying all the solids, liquids and gases that we need to live. ~ Rose George
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rose George
I don't have the average thirty-eight year-old's body. I know my face looks old, but if you slid head first for sixteen years you'd be ugly too. ~ Pete Rose
Rose Edelstein quotes by Pete Rose
The fate of peoples is made like this, two men in small rooms. Forget the coronations, the conclaves of cardinals, the pomp and processions. This is how the world changes: a counter pushed across a table, a pen stroke that alters the force of a phrase, a woman's sigh as she passes and leaves on the air a trail of orange flower or rose water; her hand pulling close the bed curtain, the discreet sigh of flesh against flesh. ~ Hilary Mantel
Rose Edelstein quotes by Hilary Mantel
Hey Sydney, she said, giving me a small, crooked smile as she entered the room. Her flashing, dark eyes were friendly, but they were also assessing everything in the room, much as Eddie's gaze was. It was a guardian thing. Rose was about my height and dressed very casually in jeans and a red tank top. But, as always, there was something as exotic and dangerous about her beauty that made her stand out from everyone else. She was like a tropical flower in this dark, stuffy room. One that could kill you. ~ Richelle Mead
Rose Edelstein quotes by Richelle Mead
You make this so hard," I muttered.
"Make what hard?"
Irritated and charmed, and annoyed because I was charmed, I glared at him. "Not liking you," I admitted.
Zayne's lips tipped up and a wide, beautiful smile appeared, stealing my breath again.
My eyes narrowed as I crossed my arms. "I don't know why you're smiling."
"Maybe because..." He rose, extending his hand toward me. "Maybe because I'm not trying to make it easy, Trin. ~ Jennifer L. Armentrout
Rose Edelstein quotes by Jennifer L. Armentrout
A birthday:-and now a day that rose
With much of hope, with meaning rife-
A thoughtful day from dawn to close:
The middle day of human life. ~ Jean Ingelow
Rose Edelstein quotes by Jean Ingelow
ROSES UNDERFOOT

The sound of salaams rising as
waves diminish down in prayer,

hoping for some trace of the one
whose trace does not appear. If

anyone asks you to say who you
are, say without hesitation,

soul withing soul within soul.
There's a pearl diver who does

not know how to swim! No matter.
Pearls are handed him on the

beach. We lovers laugh to hear,
"This should be more that and

that more this,"coming from
people sitting in a wagon tilted

in a ditch. Going in search of
the heart, I found a huge rose

under my feet, and roses under
all our feet! How to say this

to someone who denies it? The
robe we wear is the sky's cloth.

Everything is soul and flowering.

---------------------------------

I open and fill with love and
other objects evaporate. All

the learning in books stays put
on the shelf. Poetry, the dear

words and images of song, comes
down over me like mountain water.

Any cup I hold fills with wine
that lovers drink. Every word

I say opens into mystery. Any way I turn I see brilliance. ~ Rumi
Rose Edelstein quotes by Rumi
I hated roses. I hated them for being so trite, so clichéd, a default, all-purpose flower that said I love you, I'm sorry, and get well soon. Give me peonies and tulips, orchids or gardenia. Those were flowers with character. ~ Justina Chen
Rose Edelstein quotes by Justina Chen
Remember that the Unification Church rose, not in freedom, but from a prison, the pit of suffering. ~ Sun Myung Moon
Rose Edelstein quotes by Sun Myung Moon
We can retreat and retreat and let ourselves get backed into corners forever," she'd said once. "Or we can go out and meet the enemy at the time
and place we choose. Not them."
Okay, Tasha, I thought. Let's see if your advice gets me killed. ~ Richelle Mead
Rose Edelstein quotes by Richelle Mead
Footfalls echo in the memory, down the passage we did not take, towards the door we never opened, into the rose garden. ~ T. S. Eliot
