I emphasize the distinction between brackets and no brackets because it will affect your reading experience, if you will allow it. Brackets are exciting. Even though you are approaching Sappho in translation, that is no reason you should miss the drama of trying to read a papyrus torn in half or riddled with holes or smaller than a postage stamp
brackets imply a free space of imaginal adventure. ~ Anne Carson
Reading Experience quotes by Anne Carson
There's no better reading experience than going to the place where a text was written. ~ Kenzaburo Oe
Reading Experience quotes by Kenzaburo Oe
I will continue to underscore that I don't think authorial intent is all that important to a reading experience, and I certainly don't think the job of reading is to divine authorial intent. ~ John Green
Reading Experience quotes by John Green
Schools and parents can team up to find books that kids will really get excited about - that will make them say, 'That was a great experience. Now I know why people get excited about reading.' ~ James Patterson
Reading Experience quotes by James Patterson
A powerful flight of the imagination ... an entirely enjoyable reading experience, wrought by a pair of writers noted for excellence. ~ Roger Zelazny
Reading Experience quotes by Roger Zelazny
Harriet Levin [is] a shining poet in her generation ... The dynamics of her language and her vigorous voice distinguish all her poems. Levin's fearless willingness to tackle any subject combines with her subtle intelligence to produce a rare reading experience, the moving, psychologically sophisticated and intriguing work of a poet with both guts and craft ~ Molly Peacock
Reading Experience quotes by Molly Peacock
Recognising such dimensions implicit to the reading experience can distract from the immediacy of our response; it can substitute literary archaeology for novelistic reality. That is one pole. But the other extreme is equally limiting. By failing to realise the issues involved in communicating with fictional modes that are different
to our own, in effect we do not read in the fullest sense. Between intellectual pedantry and cultivated ignorance I would pose a third approach to reading - that of the informed imagination. After occupying this position true evaluation can begin. ~ Ian Gregor
Reading Experience quotes by Ian Gregor
No characters in 'Stay Close,' including the leads, are black and white. I want them to be grey. I think that makes for a much more interesting reading experience, something that will stay with you a little bit longer. ~ Harlan Coben
Reading Experience quotes by Harlan Coben
Life of a software engineer sucks big time during project release. Every single team member contribution is very important. At times, we have to skip breakfast, lunch and even dinner, just to make sure the given 'TASK' is completed. Worst thing, that's the time we get to hear wonderful F* words. It can be on conference calls or on emails, still we have to focus and deliver the end product to a client, without any compromise on quality. Actually, every techie should be saluted. We are the reason for the evolution of Information Technology. We innovate. We love artificial intelligence. We create bots and much more. We take you closer to books. Touch and feel it without the need of carrying a paperback. We created eBook and eBook reader app: it's basically a code of a software engineer that process the file, keeps up-to-date of your reading history, and gives you a smoother reading experience. We are amazing people. We are more than a saint of those days. Next time, when you meet a software engineer, thank him/her for whatever code he/she developed, tested, designed or whatever he/she did! ~ Saravanakumar Murugan
Reading Experience quotes by Saravanakumar Murugan
The greatest gift is the passion for reading.
It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites,
it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind.
It is a moral illumination. ~ Elizabeth Hardwick
Reading Experience quotes by Elizabeth Hardwick
I experienced only the glow of an extraordinary reading experience, a form of profound gratitude familiar to all who love literature. ~ Ian McEwan
Reading Experience quotes by Ian McEwan
To live, fiction must be read, and to be read it must be enjoyed. Why do so many people talk about the number of times they've lost interest in a book after a couple of chapters, or only "toughed it out" to the end out of a sense of obligation? I'd say it's because too many writers have forgotten that the writer's job isn't merely to express himself, it's to reach a reader. That doesn't mean pandering to the lowest common denominator. But it does mean that even a work of smart, thoughtful fiction should strive to engage and entertain. If you're a writer of literary fiction and all you're bringing to the party is a poetic turn of phrase or a deep thought, that's not enough. What about pace? Humour? Characters you care about and a smattering of suspense that makes you want to "find out what happens next?" All of these, plus rich language, bracing honesty and emotional resonance, should be components of the best, most thoughtful fiction. Because that's the sort of reading experience that readers should be able to expect from a novel that demands hours of their time. ~ Trevor Cole
Reading Experience quotes by Trevor Cole
I think too much is known about me already. I think biographical information can get in the way of the reading experience. The interchange between the reader and the work. For example, I know far too much about Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut. Because I know as much as I do about their personal lives, I can't read their work without this interjecting itself. So if I had it to do over, I'd probably go the way of J.D. Salinger or Thomas Pynchon. And just stay out of it altogether and let all the focus be on the work itself and not on me. ~ Tom Robbins
Reading Experience quotes by Tom Robbins
My strangest auditioning experience was when I was reading for a TV show, and right when I started the audition, the casting director left the room and yelled at me from the hallway to keep reading. ~ Danny Strong
Reading Experience quotes by Danny Strong
In the end, what makes a book valuable is not the paper it's printed on, but the thousands of hours of work by dozens of people who are dedicated to creating the best possible reading experience for you. ~ John Green
Reading Experience quotes by John Green
Describe your ideal reading experience (when, where, what, how).
Wine. Armchair. Raining. Or reading in the same room as someone else who's reading. It's rare, but there's a particular sort of peace to it. ~ Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Reading Experience quotes by Phoebe Waller-Bridge
People experience books so very differently. ~ Amy Neftzger
Reading Experience quotes by Amy Neftzger
Reading an author's Biography contributes to an understanding and enjoyment of their work, and gives a richness to the reading experience. ~ Suzy Davies
Reading Experience quotes by Suzy Davies
I'm not entirely sure what a historical novel absolutely has to be, but you don't want a reader who loves a very traditional historical novel to go in with the expectation that this is going to deliver the same kind of reading experience. I think what's contemporary about my book has something to do with how condensed things are. ~ Danielle Dutton
Reading Experience quotes by Danielle Dutton
That's still the best reading experience: falling in love with a book I meet by accident. ~ Alice Hoffman
Reading Experience quotes by Alice Hoffman
Some people read off of their Palms and Pocket PCs, but the real immersible reading experience takes a full-screen device. ~ Bill Gates
Reading Experience quotes by Bill Gates
It's basically an act of faith, hoping that a small idea will unspool into a bigger whole. Sometimes, in fact often, it doesn't and it just runs out of steam. The hope for me is that it will snowball. the best way to put it is that I have no particular method or technique per se, other than this: I plan nothing, I outline nothing, I start with an idea or an image or a line of dialogue and see where it leads me. Because I never know what the next page will contain, let alone the end of the book, I am perpetually surprised by the course that my characters take. The writing process is as full of surprises and twists for me as the reading experience is for my readers. I love the spontaneity of writing this way, the possibilities left open, the feeling that I am not constrained or committed to any given path. Every day, I am surprised by something. It may not be the most efficient way of writing, but it has served me well thus far. ~ Khaled Hosseini
Reading Experience quotes by Khaled Hosseini
Madefire is igniting a new era by creating a modern, dynamic reading experience and bringing that to the millions of iPad users around the world. ~ Dave Gibbons
Reading Experience quotes by Dave Gibbons
Were we to choose our leaders on the basis of their reading experience and not their political programs, there would be much less grief on earth. I believe ... that for someone who has read a lot of Dickens to shoot his like in the name of an idea is harder than for someone who has read no Dickens. ~ Joseph Brodsky
Reading Experience quotes by Joseph Brodsky
There is an underlying rhythm to all text. Sentences crashing fall like the waves of the sea, and work unconsciously on the reader. Punctuation is the music of language. As a conductor can influence the experience of the song by manipulating its rhythm, so can punctuation influence the reading experience, bring out the best (or worst) in a text. By controlling the speed of a text, punctuation dictates how it should be read. A delicate world of punctuation lives just beneath the surface of your work, like a world of microorganisms living in a pond. They are missed by the naked eye, but if you use a microscope you will find a exist, and that the pond is, in fact, teeming with life. This book will teach you to become sensitive to this habitat. The more you do, the greater the likelihood of your crafting a finer work in every respect. Conversely the more you turn a blind eye, the greater the likelihood of your creating a cacophonous text and of your being misread. ~ Noah Lukeman
Reading Experience quotes by Noah Lukeman
The Nixon years were trying. They honed my judgment for everything I did later on. The experience also illustrated for me the importance of training young lawyers properly. ~ Fred F. Fielding
Reading Experience quotes by Fred F. Fielding
I would not, if I could, give up the memory of the joy I have had in books for any advantage that could be offered in other pursuits or occupations. Books have been to me what gold is to the miser, what new fields are to the explorer. ~ Margaret Elizabeth Sangster
Reading Experience quotes by Margaret Elizabeth Sangster
When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own. ~ John Berger
Reading Experience quotes by John Berger
Education begins by teaching children to read and ends by making most of them hate reading. ~ Holbrook Jackson
Reading Experience quotes by Holbrook Jackson
Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos and memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life. ~ Green Day
Reading Experience quotes by Green Day
With various readings stored his empty skull, Learn'd without sense, and venerably dull. ~ Charles Churchill
Reading Experience quotes by Charles Churchill
I've learned through experience that faith moves mountains, hope moves choices, and, more importantly, that love moves you a step closer to God. ~ Maribel C. Pagan
Reading Experience quotes by Maribel C. Pagan
Our silence around this subject, like the silence around so many topics that specifically affect the lives of girls and women - incest, abuse, street harassment, pregnancy, menstruation, childbirth, rape - is related to the second dimension of epistemic justice: hermeneutical injustice, or the injustice of having one's social experience denied and hidden from communal understanding. ~ Soraya Chemaly
Reading Experience quotes by Soraya Chemaly
It is a pity that, as one gradually gains experience, one loses one's youth. ~ Vincent Van Gogh
Reading Experience quotes by Vincent Van Gogh
[E]verything is fiction. When you tell yourself the story of your life, the story of your day, you edit and rewrite and weave a narrative out of a collection of random experiences and events. Your conversations are fiction. Your friends and loved ones - they are characters you have created. And your arguments with them are like meetings with an editor - please, they beseech you, you beseech them, rewrite me. You have a perception of the way things are, and you impose it on your memory, and in this way you think, in the same way that I think, that you are living something that is describable. When of course, what we actually live, what we actually experience - with our senses and our nerves - is a vast, absurd, beautiful, ridiculous chaos. ~ Keith Ridgway
Reading Experience quotes by Keith Ridgway
Well, we played with Soul Coughing once for like two days, that was pretty cool. I mean they were all good, you can pull a great experience from everything. ~ Mike Lowry
Reading Experience quotes by Mike Lowry
Enlightened leadership is spiritual if we understand spirituality not as some kind of religious dogma or ideology but as the domain of awareness where we experience values like truth, goodness, beauty, love and compassion, and also intuition, creativity, insight and focused attention. ~ Deepak Chopra
Reading Experience quotes by Deepak Chopra
The object of the novelist is to keep the reader entirely oblivious of the fact that the author exists - even of the fact he is reading a book. ~ Ford Madox Ford
Reading Experience quotes by Ford Madox Ford
Which means, therefore, that our Bible reading is never just for seeing, never just for learning and doctrine. It is not even just for savoring, if that savoring is thought of in a private way that leaves us unchanged in our relationship with others. No. We read the Bible - we always read the Bible - for the kind of seeing and savoring Christ that transforms us into his likeness. ~ John Piper
Reading Experience quotes by John Piper
During any experience placed before us, we can stay in alignment with positivity, truth, and goodness by asking the question: What would honor and love do here? ~ Molly Friedenfeld
Reading Experience quotes by Molly Friedenfeld
It is my experience that the short path to the simple and precise English needed by a man of science lies thorough the tongues of Homer and Vergil. ~ Henry Crew
Reading Experience quotes by Henry Crew
The stories we are told shape the way we see the world, which shapes the way we experience the world. ~ Derrick Jensen
Reading Experience quotes by Derrick Jensen
If you work hard all day and all night, something may come of it. You never know, it just might. ~ S.A. Tawks
Reading Experience quotes by S.A. Tawks
Chloe thought madly about tiny FM radios that she could hide in her ear and pull her hair over to hide, about getting very badly drunk or stoned, about getting one of the loopier Wiccans at school to put her into a trance before the reading. Anything that could get her through it with her sanity intact and a straight face. ~ Celia Thomson
Reading Experience quotes by Celia Thomson
He wanted nothing, for the time being, except to understand ... Without advice, assistance or plan, he began reading an incongruous assortment of books; he would find some passage which he could not understand in one book, and he would get another on that subject ... There was no order in his reading; but there was order in what remained of it in his mind. ~ Ayn Rand
Reading Experience quotes by Ayn Rand
Dramatic experience is not logical; it may be subdued to the kind of coherence that we indicate when we speak, in criticism, of form. ~ Allen Tate
Reading Experience quotes by Allen Tate
The fact of the matter is, if you haven't been in an abusive relationship, you don't really know what the experience is like. Furthermore, it's quite hard to predict what you would do in the same situation. I find that the people most vocal about what they would've done in the same situation often have no clue what they are talking about – they have never been in the same situation themselves.
By invalidating the survivor's experience, these people are defending an image of themselves that they identify with strength, not realizing that abuse survivors are often the strongest individuals out there. They've been belittled, criticized, demeaned, devalued, and yet they've still survived. The judgmental ones often have little to no life experience regarding these situations, yet they feel quite comfortable silencing the voices of people who've actually been there. ~ Shahida Arabi
Reading Experience quotes by Shahida Arabi
Religion is just an alternate way of reading reality - you read material reality, and then you add on an extra layer of religiosity that deepens that understanding of reality. Some countries have lost that capacity, or dismissed it or marginalized it. ~ Yann Martel
Reading Experience quotes by Yann Martel
On our first record, man, I didn't know what I was doing. I was just playing. I was over playing. You're as green as you can be with no experience in recording or knowing how sometimes a song can work: when it's too much, when it's not enough, when it's not right. ~ Tommy Lee
Reading Experience quotes by Tommy Lee
I've been a performer for a long time, but I really don't have any dancing experience. I did some of the musicals in high school, and I was in the glee club for a little while just to try and gain some skills ... I was not good at it. ~ Brant Daugherty
Reading Experience quotes by Brant Daugherty
The central problem of an education based upon experience is to select the kind of present experience that live fruitfully and creatively in subsequent experiences. ~ John Dewey
Reading Experience quotes by John Dewey
I think that the online world has actually brought books back. People are reading because they're reading the damn screen. That's more reading than people used to do. ~ Bill Murray
Reading Experience quotes by Bill Murray
Wrestling is a one-on-one experience and if something goes wrong you can't point a finger and blame somebody else. What you do is up to you. And yet it's a team sport, because whether your team wins or loses is a result of the cumulative effect of the matches. Wrestling is a great confidence builder because it's not all about strength. You have to use your balance and skill and technique and if you do, you can overcome a lot of muscle and bulk guys, and even those who have natural ability. Basically, you can out-technique an opponent. ~ Dennis Hastert
Reading Experience quotes by Dennis Hastert
I even smoke in bed. Imagine smoking a cigar in bed, reading a book. Next to your bed, there's a cigar table with a special cigar ashtray, and your wife is reading a book on how to save the environment. ~ Raul Julia
Reading Experience quotes by Raul Julia
Sometimes while you are so passionately busy building, there will be others as busy destroying. Do not stop. One day you will notice how high above you get, and how down below they end up ~ Sameh Elsayed
Reading Experience quotes by Sameh Elsayed
Reading the Bible will help you get to know the word, but it's when you put it down and live your life that you get to know the author. ~ Steve Maraboli
Reading Experience quotes by Steve Maraboli
Story, as I understood it by reading Faulkner, Hardy, Cather, and Hemingway, was a powerful and clarifying human invention. The language alone, as I discovered it in Gerard Manley Hopkins and Faulkner, was exquisitely beautiful, also weirdly and mysteriously evocative. ~ Barry Lopez
Reading Experience quotes by Barry Lopez
I just finished reading 'Don't Drink...' in one day. This is a very important and very 'big' book. Bob has bared his soul's journey like no one I can think of, and it's a great story offering great hope at the same time. This book will resonate with intelligent, conscious readers everywhere. ~ Neville Williams
Reading Experience quotes by Neville Williams
If we read books all the time we would be very unhealthy, as we would not get any fresh air, exercise, or contact with nature. Also we would not spend time with other people. There are a lot of plusses to reading - it's an interactive brain workout - but like everything else that's beneficial in moderation, overdoses can be dangerous. ~ Margaret Atwood
Reading Experience quotes by Margaret Atwood
Men do everything that men do, from waging war to reading books, for one purpose only: to get laid. ~ David Burr Gerrard
Reading Experience quotes by David Burr Gerrard
Literature has the ability to open up a whole new world to children, but we need to have a share in helping them to find that door and open it with them. Let's set the example and help to foster this love of reading in our little ones. ~ Carmela Dutra
Reading Experience quotes by Carmela Dutra
No you can't understand because you are reading the last chapter of something with out having read the first chapters. Young people always think they are coming into a story at the beginning when they are usually coming in at the end. ~ Joe Hill
Reading Experience quotes by Joe Hill
My faith experience, well, as you can imagine, you need a lot of faith to raise five boys. ~ Ann Romney
Reading Experience quotes by Ann Romney
Love is scary! Taking a vow to love someone through sickness and health, for richer for poorer, forsaking all others, until death do us part, is the most terrifying experience a person can have. Why pretend any differently? ~ Elin Hilderbrand
Reading Experience quotes by Elin Hilderbrand
So I learned that even after a single day's experience of the outside world a man could easily live a hundred years in prison. He'd have laid up enough memories never to be bored. Obviously, in one way, this was a compensation. ~ Anonymous
Reading Experience quotes by Anonymous
I've had a lot of experience building things, organizing things, a national scholarship program. ~ Benjamin Carson
Reading Experience quotes by Benjamin Carson
Oh, those lapses, darling. So many of us walk around letting fly with "errors." We could do better, but we're so slovenly, so rushed amid the hurly-burly of modern life, so imprinted by the "let it all hang out" ethos of the sixties, that we don't bother to observe the "rules" of "correct" grammar.

To a linguist, if I may share, these "rules" occupy the exact same place as the notion of astrology, alchemy, and medicine being based on the four humors. The "rules" make no logical sense in terms of the history of our language, or what languages around the world are like.

Nota bene: linguists savor articulateness in speech and fine composition in writing as much as anyone else. Our position is not - I repeat, not - that we should chuck standards of graceful composition. All of us are agreed that there is usefulness in a standard variety of a language, whose artful and effective usage requires tutelage. No argument there.

The argument is about what constitutes artful and effective usage. Quite a few notions that get around out there have nothing to do with grace or clarity, and are just based on misconceptions about how languages work.

Yet, in my experience, to try to get these things across to laymen often results in the person's verging on anger. There is a sense that these "rules" just must be right, and that linguists' purported expertise on language must be somehow flawed on this score. We are, it is said, permissive - perhaps a ~ John McWhorter
Reading Experience quotes by John McWhorter
When I was younger I wish I'd known that what often seemed to be the 'end of the world' often turned out to be a positive and transformative experience! ~ Annie Lennox
Reading Experience quotes by Annie Lennox
And if she spent rather more time with her nose in a book than was considered ideal at that time (or any other), well, at least that meant she always had a story to tell. ~ Kristen Roupenian
Reading Experience quotes by Kristen Roupenian
Of the significant and pleasurable experiences of life only the simplest are open indiscriminately to all. The rest cannot be had except by those who have undergone a suitable training. ~ Aldous Huxley
Reading Experience quotes by Aldous Huxley
His will be done, as done it surely will be, whether we humble ourselves to resignation or not. The impulse of creation forwards it; the strength of powers, seen and unseen, has its fulfillment in charge. Proof of a life to come must be given. In fire and in blood, if needful, must that proof be written. In fire and in blood do we trace the record throughout nature. In fire and in blood does it cross our own experience. Sufferer, faint not through terror of this burning evidence. Tired wayfarer, gird up thy loins, look upward, march onward. Pilgrims and brother mourners, join in friendly company. Dark through the wilderness of this world stretches the way for most of us: equal and steady be our tread; be our cross our banner. For staff we have His promis, whose 'word is tried, whose way perfect": for present hope His providence, 'who gives the shield of salvation, whose gentleness makes great'; for final home His bosom, who 'dwells in the height of Heaven'; for crowning prize a glory exceeding and eternal. Let us so run that we may obtain: let us endure hardness as good soldiers; let us finish our course, and keep the faith, reliant in the issue to come off more than conquerors: 'Art though not from everlasting mine Holy One? WE SHALL NOT DIE! ~ Charlotte Bronte
Reading Experience quotes by Charlotte Bronte
Ah ha, I knew you were reading it ~ Richard Castle
Reading Experience quotes by Richard Castle
Never feel guilty about reading, it's what you do to do your job. ~ William Safire
Reading Experience quotes by William Safire
A woman, if she hates her husband (and many of them do), can make life so sour and obnoxious to him that even death upon the gallows seems sweet by comparison. This hatred, of course, is often, and perhaps almost invariably, quite justified. To be the wife of an ordinary man, indeed, is an experience that must be very hard to bear. The hollowness and vanity of the fellow, his petty meanness and stupidity, his puling sentimentality and credulity, his bombastic air of a cock on a dunghill, his anaesthesia to all whispers and summonings of the spirit, above all, his loathsome clumsiness in amour - all these things must revolt any woman above the lowest. ~ H.L. Mencken
