I took a bus and then a train, and as soon as I saw that place, saw the girls in their uniforms and the huge library and the computer rooms, I knew I belonged there. The desks weren't graffitied with "Fuck you." The only drawings of anatomy were hanging on the wall. I sat at the station that afternoon feeding small birds, dreaming that I lived in the city. I let three trains leave before I took one home. ~ Cath Crowley
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Cath Crowley
Many are they who have a taste and love for drawing, but no talent; and this will be discernible in boys who are not diligent and never finish their drawings with shading. ~ Leonardo Da Vinci
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Leonardo Da Vinci
The living model never answers well the idea or impressions the painter wishes to express; one must, therefore, learn to do without one, and for that, you must acquire facility, furnish one's memory to the point of infinitude, and make numerous drawings after the old masters. ~ Eugene Delacroix
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Eugene Delacroix
And although the space they occupy isn't like normal
space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. Not a cubic inch there but is filled by a claw, a talon, a scale, the tip of a
tail, so the effect is like one of those trick drawings and
your eyeballs eventually realize that the space between each
dragon is, in fact, another dragon. ~ Terry Pratchett
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Terry Pratchett
Sometimes I draw with my left hand and I am pretty terrible. The drawings end up just looking like shakier/inconsistent (worse) versions of my right hand drawings. Sometimes I like drawing with my eyes closed. ~ Jason Polan
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Jason Polan
Dignity is not a symbol bestowed on man, nor does the word itself possess force. Man's dignity is a force and the only modus vivendi by which man and his history survive. When mid-twentieth century Germany did not let man live and die with this right, man became an animal. No matter how technologically advanced or sophisticated, when man negates this divine right, he not only becomes self-destructive, but castrates his history and poisons our future. This is what 'The Nazi Drawings' are about. ~ Mauricio Lasansky
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Mauricio Lasansky
It constantly remains a source of disappointment to me that my drawings are not yet what I want them to be. The difficulties are indeed numerous and great, and cannot be overcome at once. To make progress is a kind of miner's work; it doesn't advance as quickly as one would like, and as others also expect, but as one stands before such a task, the basic necessities are patience and faithfulness. In fact, I do not think much about the difficulties, because if one thought of them too much one would get stunned or disturbed. ~ Vincent Van Gogh
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Vincent Van Gogh
When I make my drawings ... the path traced by my pencil on the sheet of paper is, to some extent, analogous to the gesture of a man groping his way in the darkness. ~ Alberto Giacometti
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Alberto Giacometti
I love drawings, so I've always enjoyed making drawings that exist on their own. ~ Jasper Johns
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Jasper Johns
My work is so unorthodox that from one panel to the next, the drawings are completely different ... totally opposed to the way of working in something like animation, where every drawing has to look like the one before. ~ Sergio Aragones
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Sergio Aragones
Julia had a friend, a man named Dennys, who was as a boy a tremendously gifted artist. They had been friends since they were small, and she once showed me some of the drawings he made when he was ten or twelve: little sketches of birds pecking at the ground, of his face, round and blank, of his father, the local veterinarian, his hand smoothing the fur of a grimacing terrier. Dennys's father didn't see the point of drawing lessons, however, and so he was never formally schooled. But when they were older, and Julia went to university, Dennys went to art school to learn how to draw. For the first week, he said, they were allowed to draw whatever they wanted, and it was always Dennys's sketches that the professor selected to pin up on the wall for praise and critique.
But then they were made to learn how to draw: to re-draw, in essence. Week two, they only drew ellipses. Wide ellipses, fat ellipses, skinny ellipses. Week three, they drew circles: three-dimensional circles, two-dimensional circles. Then it was a flower. Then a vase. Then a hand. Then a head. Then a body. And with each week of proper training, Dennys got worse and worse. By the time the term had ended, his pictures were never displayed on the wall. He had grown too self-conscious to draw. When he saw a dog now, its long fur whisking the ground beneath it, he saw not a dog but a circle on a box, and when he tried to draw it, he worried about proportion, not about recording its doggy-ness. ~ Hanya Yanagihara
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Hanya Yanagihara
I'll put it on my table where I keep my drawings, Hassan said.
His saying that made me kind of sad. Sad for who Hassan was, where he lived. For how he'd accepted the fact that he'd grow old in that mud shack in the yard, the way his father had. ~ Khaled Hosseini
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Khaled Hosseini
I like my drawings to be direct. I don't generally work on them for too long, but that doesn't mean that they are not works in their own right. ~ Jeff Koons
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Jeff Koons
One of the reasons why you like to do your own drawings is, your style changes over time. And there's something about that that keeps it fresh to the viewer. ~ Scott Adams
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Scott Adams
I used to always make art for girls. That was the thing I did for girls to like me. I did portraits, drawings, letters that formed outlines of significant things in our relationship. Art. I just used art in general. It usually worked. ~ Cary Fukunaga
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Cary Fukunaga
Some sculptors make drawings, I make heads. ~ David Altmejd
Penicuik Drawings quotes by David Altmejd
Something happened when I was in elementary school. A Disney artist named Bruce McIntyre retired, and he had done drawings for 'Pinocchio' and 'Snow White' that was just classic stuff. He moved to the town I grew up in, Carlsbad, and he became a part-time art teacher at our elementary school. ~ Robert Stromberg
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Robert Stromberg
Maps are essential. Planning a journey without a map is like building a house without drawings. ~ Mark Jenkins
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Mark Jenkins
Where history concerns mainly personalities, the drawings become either black or white according to the interests of the writer. ~ Isaac Asimov
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Isaac Asimov
I just recently did a film with Disney, and they put the drawings straight on the computer. And it's all painted on the computer now and not by hand anymore. ~ Gerald Scarfe
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Gerald Scarfe
I sit, I think, I make some drawings. As a designer, you cannot retire totally. ~ Dieter Rams
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Dieter Rams
The trouble is, we've been taught what to see and how to render what we see. If only we could be in the position of those men who did those wonderful drawings in Lascaux and Altimira! ~ Pablo Picasso
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Pablo Picasso
The drawings are terribly good. ~ Christopher Fowler
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Christopher Fowler
I did photograph Angelina Jolie up in Vancouver when she was making 'Life Or Something Like It', and they gave me the drawings they wanted me to photograph of her up there, but she didn't really care for them that much, and ultimately they weren't even used. ~ Douglas Kirkland
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Douglas Kirkland
Abstraction has always been around, since the drawings in the caves. It exists in all cultures all over the world. I thought for a while that it was going to be the major movement. But people always drift back to realism. I guess there is a certain security in that. ~ Brice Marden
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Brice Marden
Preliminary drawings or sketches in oil or pastel often have an immediacy and emotional appeal far greater than the final canvas. ~ Paul Mellon
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Paul Mellon
I went into Hollywood and met Mike Aarons and went to Grantray-Lawrence Animation to work on the, by today's standards, extremely cheap and crude Marvel superheroes cartoons which basically consisted of taking stacks of the comic book art, taking parts of the art, pasting it down, extending it down into drawings and occasionally a new piece of art to bridge the comic book panels and limited animation and lip movement. ~ Mike Royer
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Mike Royer
I was always most interested in drawing - most of my childhood drawings are black-and-white line work. And when I kind of abandoned comics, through college and art school, I was doing a lot of painting. But once I started doing comics again, everything else just fell by the wayside. ~ Jeffrey Brown
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Jeffrey Brown
Stan is a rescue Chihuahua mix. He was the role model for Bob, the dog in 'Ivan.' The drawings in the book look precisely like Stan. ~ K.A. Applegate
Penicuik Drawings quotes by K.A. Applegate
Footnote: In 1998, a woman in Saline, Michigan received a patent for a Decorative Penile Wrap ... The patent included three pages of drawings, including a penis wearing a ghost outfit, another in the robes of the Grim Reaper, and one dressed up to look like a snowman. ~ Mary Roach
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Mary Roach
If you don't use an image now you might have a place to put it in further down the line - and I have a lot of unfinished drawings. ~ Raymond Pettibon
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Raymond Pettibon
I call it 'new forms'. When you're starting out, they ask you to do four or five minute sets, but once you're a headliner, you do like 90 minutes. I try to think of different things to divvy up the show, like doing drawings, playing music ... I gotta carry the show, that's the problem. ~ Demetri Martin
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Demetri Martin
In reality some images or drawings have a greater impact than many buildings that are built. ~ Emilio Ambasz
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Emilio Ambasz
He imagines the water running in thick curving lines, like the drawings of the tree's roots, cutting through stone and spilling over the earth. And then he reverses the flow of water, letting his imagination take over, and he sees the water racing north, uphill, towards the Catskills, weaving around towns, beneath bridges, rushing over stones and cutting through the trees, until it lands at the feet of Alice Pearson, who stands on the shore, looking out at the place where the water meets the sky. ~ Beth Hahn
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Beth Hahn
A tender smile softened his face. "That would be Esme. She's nine and a delight. I haven't seen much of her these past few years, but she writes me letters. Sends me drawings as well. I have a likeliness of every cat, hound, and horse she's ever met, and considering the menagerie she keeps in the country at Clybourne, that's a great many indeed. ~ Tracy Anne Warren
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Tracy Anne Warren
I like to work in watercolor, with as little under-drawing as I can get away with. I like the unpredictability of a medium which is affected as much by humidity, gravity, the way that heavier particles in the wash settle into the undulations of the paper surface, as by whatever I wish to do with it. In other mediums you have more control, you are responsible for every mark on the page - but with watercolor you are in a dialogue with the paint, it responds to you and you respond to it in turn. Printmaking is also like this, it has an unpredictable element. This encourages an intuitive response, a spontaneity which allows magic to happen on the page. When I begin an illustration, I usually work up from small sketches - which indicate in a simple way something of the atmosphere or dynamics of an illustration; then I do drawings on a larger scale supported by studies from models - usually friends - if figures play a large part in the picture. When I've reached a stage where the drawing looks good enough I'll transfer it to watercolor paper, but I like to leave as much unresolved as possible before starting to put on washes. This allows for an interaction with the medium itself, a dialogue between me and the paint. Otherwise it is too much like painting by number, or a one-sided conversation. ~ Alan Lee (artist)
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Alan Lee (artist)
But now with technology I could sit down and do a bunch of character drawings and scan them into a computer, and the computer using my exact style could bring it into life, where it would have been edited by various human beings before. ~ Bill Griffith
Penicuik Drawings quotes by Bill Griffith
My mom is a painter, so I've been doing drawings and paintings as early as I can remember. Then there was this gap where I was doing graffiti in high school and making as much [traditional] art. ~ Alec Monopoly
