John Law's life and his Mississippi Scheme had followed an identical arc of trajectory. Law had been both the maker and breaker of the Mississippi Scheme just as the Mississippi Scheme had been both the maker and breaker of Law. ~ Gavin John Adams
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Gavin John Adams
Let certain things be uncertain.
Appreciate the puzzle that life is,
insofar as I know, after a scheme of steps,
all Crosswords have a solution,
and every Sudoku makes a lot of sense. ~ Jasleen Kaur Gumber
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Jasleen Kaur Gumber
There is a danger to judicial independence when people have no understanding of how the judiciary fits into the constitutional scheme. ~ David Souter
Mississippi Scheme quotes by David Souter
For all the clever jokes that could be made here involving "mind" and "matter" there is one sure and certain variation you can take with you to the grave: "In the grand scheme of things you don't matter very much, and the laws of physics don't mind at all. ~ Patrick E. McLean
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Patrick E. McLean
You and I are faced with one of those situations (which fortunately are not very numerous in one lifetime) which cannot possibly be adequately judged beforehand. It strikes me as a colossal gamble, or rather, a very great adventure. And personally I am considerably exhilarated by the risks! ... The greatness of the adventure perhaps consists partly in the fact that as a Catholic I can marry only once! But, as with being born, perhaps once is quite sufficient! In the Church, you know, there is a great heightening of every moment of experience, since every moment is played against a supernatural backdrop. Nothing can be humdrum in this scheme. ~ Marshall McLuhan
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Marshall McLuhan
One day I picked up the phone to hear a middle-aged female voice asking if there were "any green Salles" left; she wanted to match Salle's art to the color scheme of her living room furniture. It's all such a joke, ~ Kim Gordon
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Kim Gordon
If you try to give them a scheme, most hitters will rebel. ~ Tony La Russa
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Tony La Russa
One of the key moments in the creation of modernity occurs when production moves outside the household. So long as productive work occurs within the structure of households, it is easy and right to understand that work as part of the sustaining of the community of the household and of those wider forms of community which the household in turn sustains. As, and to the extent that, work moves outside the household and is put to the service of impersonal capital, the realm of work tends to become separated from everything but the service of biological survival and the reproduction of the labor force, on the one hand, and that of institutionalized acquisitiveness, on the other. Pleonexia, a vice in the Aristotelian scheme, is now the driving force of modern productive work. ~ Alasdair MacIntyre
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Alasdair MacIntyre
In the external scheme of things, shining moments are as brief as the twinkling of an eye, yet such twinklings are what eternity is made of
moments when we human beings can say "I love you," "I'm proud of you," "I forgive you," "I'm grateful for you." That's what eternity is made of: invisible imperishable good stuff. ~ Fred Rogers
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Fred Rogers
Nothing was as it seemed in Leo Koretz's make-believe world of mysterious syndicates and Panamanian oil fields. Accounts written long after his death added fresh layers of myth and distortion, but I was determined to learn the truth about a larger-than-life figure who rarely, if ever, told the truth. The real story of the man who pioneered and mastered the Ponzi scheme, is so gripping – and, at times, so incredible – that it needs no embellishment. And it's a story woven into the fabric of the corrupt politics and gang warfare that plagued Chicago in the 1920s. ~ Dean Jobb
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Dean Jobb
It takes an unusually philosophic mind to accept that all one's suffering might be to no end, really, in the larger scheme of things. ~ Ian C. Esslemont
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Ian C. Esslemont
Salander was dressed for the day in a black T-shirt with a picture on it of E.T. with fangs, and the words I AM ALSO AN ALIEN. She had on a black skirt that was frayed at the hem, a worn-out black, mid-length leather jacket, rivet belt, heavy Doc Marten boots, and horizontally striped, green-and-red knee socks. She had put on make-up in a colour scheme that indicated she might be colourblind. In other words, she was exceptionally decked out. ~ Stieg Larsson
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Stieg Larsson
Prayer is in essence rebellion - rebellion against the world in its fallenness. Prayer is the undying refusal to accept as normal what is pervasively abnormal. It is the refusal of every agenda, every scheme, every interpretation that is at odds with the norm as originally established by God. ~ David G. Wells
Mississippi Scheme quotes by David G. Wells
The Socialists can scheme their schemes and the Liberals can dream their dreams, but we, at least, have work to do. ~ Hugh MacLennan
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Hugh MacLennan
She wanted out of that decorating scheme. ~ Jeffrey Eugenides
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Jeffrey Eugenides
If you could see how I see by penetrating the superficial, you'd see the grand scheme of those co called "powerful" officials. It's disgust and deception at its deepest descent and yes, all those involved, it's hell where all reside. ~ Jose R. Coronado
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Jose R. Coronado
I remember reading 'The Hobbit' on a car trip from Ohio to Mississippi and getting out at a rest-stop in Mississippi and feeling jet-lagged at my return from Middle-earth. ~ Garth Risk Hallberg
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Garth Risk Hallberg
It pain me to tell you that once again Count Olaf would appear with yet another disgusting scheme, and that Mr. Poe would once again fail to do anything even remotely helpful. ~ Lemony Snicket
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Lemony Snicket
My parents had to go to Ohio to get married in 1965 because it was still illegal in Mississippi. My white father and black mother. ~ Natasha Trethewey
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Natasha Trethewey
My song are more about the practical message of not wearing ourselves out just to get rich and looking at what life is really about and enjoying each and every day as opposed to the opposite of that. About living your life in a freer sense and not being bound by what people think of you and looking forward to seeing the grander scheme of who God is, what He's done and what He's doing and what He'd going to do. ~ Peter Furler
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Peter Furler
Curiously enough, it seems that at times the spiritual side prevails, and then the materialistic side - in wave-like motions following each other. ...At one time the full flood of materialistic ideas prevails, and everything in this life - prosperity, the education which procures more pleasures, more food - will become glorious at first and then that will degrade and degenerate. Along with the prosperity will rise to white heat all the inborn jealousies and hatreds of the human race. Competition and merciless cruelty will be the watchword of the day. To quote a very commonplace and not very elegant English proverb, "Everyone for himself, and the devil take the hindmost", becomes the motto of the day. Then people think that the whole scheme of life is a failure. And the world would be destroyed had not spirituality come to the rescue and lent a helping hand to the sinking world. Then the world gets new hope and finds a new basis for a new building, and another wave of spirituality comes, which in time again declines. As a rule, spirituality brings a class of men who lay exclusive claim to the special powers of the world. The immediate effect of this is a reaction towards materialism, which opens the door to scores of exclusive claims, until the time comes when not only all the spiritual powers of the race, but all its material powers and privileges are centered in the hands of a very few; and these few, standing on the necks of the masses of the people, want to rule them. Then ~ Swami Vivekananda
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Swami Vivekananda
The perspective of eternity is not a perspective from a certain place beyond the world, nor the point of view of a transcendent being; rather it is a certain form of thought and feeling that rational persons can adopt within the world. And having done so, they can, whatever their generation, bring together into one scheme all individual perspectives and arrive together at regulative principles that can be affirmed by everyone as he lives by them, each from his own standpoint. Purity of heart, if one could attain it, would be to see clearly and to act with grace and self-command from this point of view. ~ John Rawls
Mississippi Scheme quotes by John Rawls
The growth of the nervous system from beginning to end is dominated by 'a totally integrated matrix, and not a progressive integration of primarily individuated units'. The organism is not a sum of its reflexes, but on the contrary 'the mechanism of the total pattern is an essential component of the performance of the part, i.e. the reflex'. The stimulus-response scheme cannot explain even embryonic behaviour, because movements appear long before the motor neurons of the reflex arc are connected with the sensory neurons. This centrifugal mode of development means that the individual acts on its environment before it reacts to its environment. ~ Arthur Koestler
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Arthur Koestler
Therefore those governing the State ought primarily to devote themselves to the service of individual groups and of the whole commonwealth, and through the entire scheme of laws and institutions to cause both public and individual well-being to develop spontaneously out of the very structure and administration of the state. ~ Pope Leo XIII
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Pope Leo XIII
The most temptation I'd experienced had been with Tomas, the Senate's spy who had been feeding off me without permission, and Mircea, who was probably plotting some nefarious scheme. I have no taste in men. ~ Karen Chance
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Karen Chance
She reads his poems gratefully in her small Mississippi town. It's an undramatic life, yet these past months she seems to have found the intensity he yearns for, This also sounds like bragging, though she doesn't mean it to. If she could, she'd let him bear her secret. She'd let all great men bear it, for s few hours. Then, when she too it back, they'd remember how it feels to be inhabited. ~ Beth Ann Fennelly
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Beth Ann Fennelly
Get your ass into my trailer." "And why would I go into your place?" "To save your life." "There's a new line. Is this some elaborate scheme to get in my pants?" she huffed with her hands on her hips. ~ Eve Langlais
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Eve Langlais
I had enough of a story churning in my head that combined all the elements of the day - the interview, the concert, the after-party's private session - when he put his guitar away and asked me if I had ever experimented with homosexuality. Talk about unexpected segues. Letting him know that I had not and wasn't about to, I successfully changed the subject by asking him to give me a condensed account about traveling to Mississippi in search of Bukka White. ~ Kenny Weissberg
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Kenny Weissberg
To be honest, I thought of you as an amateur - a spoiled, entitled, runaway princeling bent on revenge who would get caught and then complicate my elegant scheme. I figured the less you knew, the better."
"I hate it when you sugarcoat things," Ash said. ~ Cinda Williams Chima
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Cinda Williams Chima
Charm was a scheme for making strangers like and trust a person immediately, no matter what the charmer had in mind. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
I think Americans suffer for their lack of travel, awareness of the world. It has horribly warped our sense of place in the scheme of things. ~ Henry Rollins
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Henry Rollins
The intriguing history of American applied toponymy includes a few notoriously unpopular sweeping decisions a year after President Benjamin Harrison created the Board on Geographic Names in 1890. Harrison acted at the behest of several government agencies, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, which was responsible for mapping the nation's coastline, harbors, and coastal waterways. Troubled by inconsistencies in spelling, board members voted to replace centre with center, drop the ugh from names ending in orough, and shorten the suffix burgh to burg. Overnight, Centreview (in Mississippi) became Centerview, Isleborough (in Maine) became Isleboro, and Pittsburgh (in Pennsylvania) lost its final h and a lot of civic pride. The city was chartered in 1816 as Pittsburg, but the Post Office Department added the extra letter sometime later. Although both spellings were used locally and the shorter version had been the official name, many Pittsburghers complained bitterly about the cost of reprinting stationery and repainting signs. Making the spelling consistent with Harrisburg, they argued, was hardly a good reason for truncating the Iron City's moniker--although Harrisburg was the state capital, it was a smaller and economically less important place. Local officials protested that the board had exceeded its authority. The twenty-year crusade to restore the final h bore fruit in 1911, when the board reversed itself--but only for Pittsburgh. Mississippi Scheme quotes by Mark Monmonier
All my life, the library has always been one of my favorite places to go. (Larry Brown: A Writer's Life by Jean W. Cash) ~ Larry Brown
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Larry Brown
For every human being who is born into this universe is like a child who has been given a key to an infinite Library, written in cyphers that are more or less obscure, arranged by a scheme - of which we can at first know nothing, other than that there does appear to be some scheme - pervaded by a vapor, a spirit, a fragrance that reminds us that it was the work of our Father. Which does us no good whatever, other than to remind us, when we despair, that there is an underlying logic about it, that was understood once and can be understood again. ~ Neal Stephenson
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Neal Stephenson
In placid hours well-pleased we dream Of many a brave unbodied scheme. But form to lend, pulsed life create, What unlike things must meet and mate: A flame to melt
a wind to freeze; Sad patience
joyous energies; Humility
yet pride and scorn; Instinct and study; love and hate; Audacity
reverence. These must mate, And fuse with Jacob's mystic heart, To wrestle with the angel
Art. ~ Herman Melville
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Herman Melville
He whose honor depends on the opinion of the mob must day by day strive with the greatest anxiety, act and scheme in order to retain his reputation. For the mob is varied and inconsistent, and therefore if a reputation is not carefully preserved it dies quickly. ~ Baruch Spinoza
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Baruch Spinoza
It's satisfaction to the soul / To make something out of nothing, and to trim / A figured piece to fit a gaping hole, / And turn and twist and scheme until it matches. / There's nothing more respectable than patches. ~ Jane Merchant
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Jane Merchant
A lifetime spent in the study of the history of societies since the dawn of mankind presumably inclined him to skepticism and misgivings in regard to any great scheme, religious or political, that set out to create universal happiness in one fell swoop; what it was more likely to create, in his opinion, was universal misery; and his faith in heaven-sent saviors was hardly greater. ~ Francois Maspero
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Francois Maspero
Even Solon Gregg was finding it hard to speak to a woman who had just paid hard cash for tampons and on her face wore the look of a woman who meant to use them, as advertised. ~ Lewis Nordan
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Lewis Nordan
The universe had no choice but to create intelligent life so that there would be someone else that could simply laugh at how unbelievably, ridiculously and senselessly huge the universe is and how utterly insignificant the rest of us are. ~ Ian Strang
Mississippi Scheme quotes by Ian Strang
Mississippi State has two pretty looking quarterbacks. ~ Mike Leach
