The forces of blind life that work across this hilltop are as irresistible as she said they were, they work by a principle more potent than fission. But I can't look upon them as just life, impartial and eternal and in flux, an unceasing interchange of protein. And I can't find proofs of the crawl toward perfection that she believed in. Maybe what we call evil is only as she told me that first day we met, what conflicts with our interests; but maybe there are such realities as ignorance, selfishness, jealousy, malice, criminal carelessness, and maybe these things are evil no mater whose interests they serve or conflict with. ~ Wallace Stegner
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stegner

Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Being a Negro writer these days is a racket and I'm going to make the most of it while it lasts. About twice a year I sell a story. It is acclaimed. I am a genius in the making. Thank God for this Negro literary renaissance. Long may it flourish ~ Wallace Thurman
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Thurman
The answer to your prayer is not according to your faith while you are talking, but according to your faith while you are working. ~ Wallace D. Wattles
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace D. Wattles
What he'd do, he'd never go out to the length of the chain. He'd never even get out to where the chain got tight. Even if the mailman pulled up, or a salesman. Out of dignity, this dog pretended like he chose this one area to stay in that just happened to be inside the length of the chain. Nothing outside of that area right there interested him. He just had zero interest. So he never noticed the chain. He didn't hate it. The chain. He just up and made it not relevant. maybe he wasn't pretending
maybe he really up and chose that little circle for his own world. He had a power to him. All of his life on that chain. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Man must cast out of himself everything which separates him from God. He must will to live the divine life, and he must rise above all moral temptations; he must forsake every course of action that is not in accord with his highest ideals. ~ Wallace D. Wattles
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace D. Wattles
Wolf-Spiders Ruleth the Land ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
No one can call themselves a writer until he or she has written at least fifty stories. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
She had a brainy girls discomfort about her own beauty and its effects on folks. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
What the disorderly crave above everything is order, what the dislocated aspire to is location. ~ Wallace Stegner
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stegner
I'm nearing the end of the road and still learning. ~ Mike Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Mike Wallace
It is also lonely on a level that cannot be conveyed ... If a person in physical pain has a hard time attending to anything except that pain, a clinically depressed person cannot even perceive any other person or thing as independent of the universal pain that is digesting her cell by cell. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Everything Bill did, he did to the max, said Edmark. What he did always went well, well beyond everyone else.
Gifted children - those with IQs near or above the genius level- sometimes grow up to be socially inept, due to limited childhood interactions and experiences. Bill and Mary Gates were determined to see that that didn't happen to their son. ~ James Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by James Wallace
exformation, which is a certain quantity of vital information removed from but evoked by a communication in such a way as to cause a kind of explosion of associative connections within the recipient. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
I had, by thirteen, developed a sort of Taoist hubris about my ability to control via non-control. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Believe what you want. I'm powerless over what you believe. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Dude, could you please get off my girlfriend before I beat the crap out of you ? I don't want to injure her. ~ Stacey Wallace Benefiel
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Stacey Wallace Benefiel
Whenever a new scholar came to out school, I used to confront him at recess with the following words: 'My name's Tom Bailey: what's your name?' If the name struck me favorably, I shook hands with the new pupil cordially; but if it didn't I would turn on my heel, for I was particular in this point. Such names as Higgins, Wiggins, and Spriggins were deadly afronts to my ear; while Lapgdon, Wallace, Blake, and the like, were passing words to my confidence and esteem. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Thomas Bailey Aldrich
I think," I say after a while, waiting for the right words to come, "that if a man could be said to be loved by his son, then I think that man could be considered great." For this is the only power I have, to bestow upon my father the mantle of greatness, a thing he sought in the wider world, but one that, in a surprise turn of events, was here at home all along. ~ Daniel Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Daniel Wallace
I am the angel of Reality, Seen for a moment standing in the door. ~ Wallace Stevens
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stevens
It's the what if? The what then? And we know that if we go for it, if we risk it, we immediately stand to lose it. But weirdly, some part of us believes the feeling is two-way, because it must be; it's too special not to be. We believe that something's been shared, even if the evidence we have is ... what? A look that lasted a breath longer then we're used to? A second glance, when the glance could easily have been to check whether there are any cabs coming, or whether the jacket we're wearing that's caught their eyes would look good on their boyfriend, or why it is we seem to be staring at them.
I saw you. You don't use overhead handles on the train. Hoped it would jolt and you would fall to me. But no.
I smiled. These small moments, never said out loud, as formed and perfect as sweet little haikus, romance and longing carved out in the dust of a grubby city. ~ Danny Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Danny Wallace
I was the world in which I walked. ~ Wallace Stevens
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stevens
Scientific understanding is our joy. Economic and political understanding is our duty. ~ Henry A. Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Henry A. Wallace
In one of my latest conversations with Darwin he expressed himself very gloomily on the future of humanity, on the ground that in our modern civilization natural selection had no play, and the fittest did not survive. Those who succeed in the race for wealth are by no means the best or the most intelligent, and it is notorious that our population is more largely renewed in each generation from the lower than from the middle and upper classes. ~ Alfred Russel Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Alfred Russel Wallace
Is it possible really to love other people? If I'm lonely and in pain, everyone outside me is potential relief - I need them. But can you really love what you need so badly? Isn't a big part of love caring more about what the other person needs? How am I supposed to subordinate my own overwhelming need to somebody else's needs that I can't even feel directly? And yet if I can't do this, I'm damned to loneliness, which I definitely don't want ... so I'm back at trying to overcome my selfishness for self-interested reasons. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Sometimes the newer kids who won't even let him near them come in and set the resistance on the shoulder-pull at a weight greater than their own weight. The guru on the towel dispenser just sits there and smiles and doesn't say anything. They hunker, then, and grimace, and try to pull the bar down, but, like, lo: the overweighted shoulder-pull becomes a chin-up. Up they go, their own bodies, toward the bar they're trying to pull down. Everyone should get at least one good look at the eyes of a man who finds himself rising toward what he wants to pull down to himself. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Art is self expression. If you are expressing someone else's personality, that is not art. ~ Bennie Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Bennie Wallace
It is the mind that is woven, the mind that was jerked
And tufted in straggling thunder and shattered sun. ~ Wallace Stevens
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stevens
To get better now would take more than a miracle; it would take a written excuse from Zeus himself, signed in triplicate and sent to every other deity who might lay claim to my father's withered body and soul. ~ Daniel Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Daniel Wallace
(..)-Dr. G. would later say that the whole "my whole life flashed before me" phenomenon at the end is more like being a whitecap on the suface of the ocean, meaning that it's only at the moment you subside and start sliding back in that you're really even aware there's an ocean at all. When you're up and out there as a whitecap you might talk and act as if you know you're just a whitecap on the ocean, but deep down you don't think there's really an ocean at all. It's almost impossible to. Or like a leaf that doesn't believe in the tree it's part of, etc. There are all sorts of ways to try to express it. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
It may well be that we, spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able truly to see, articulate, and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it
and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
You believe you would die twice for another but in truth would die only for your alone self, its sentiment. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
What's wrong with Wallace?' Millie said.

'The same thing that ails us all,' Gordon sighed. 'Millie Keith has broken his heart. Woe, woe...'

Millie stepped on his toe none too gently.

'...wouch! Did you learn that step in Charleston? ~ Martha Finley
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Martha Finley
When you switch your focus from the "we" to the "me", the goal from "team" to "self", you upset the balance of the whole. Consequentially, that redistribution of effort impedes success. ~ Carlos Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Carlos Wallace
When I was twenty I was in love with words, a wordsmith. I didn't know enough to know when people were letting words get in their way. Now I like the words to disappear, like a transparent curtain. ~ Wallace Stegner
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stegner
The word is the making of the world ~ Wallace Stevens
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stevens
That what appears to be egoism so often isn't. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
For me, the last few years of the postmodern era have seemed a bit like the way you feel when you're in high school and your parents go on a trip, and you throw a party. You get all your friends over and throw this wild disgusting fabulous party. For a while it's great, free and freeing, parental authority gone and overthrown, a cat's-away-let's-play Dionysian revel. But then time passes and the party gets louder and louder, and you run out of drugs, and nobody's got any money for more drugs, and things get broken and spilled, and there's cigarette burn on the couch, and you're the host and it's your house too, and you gradually start wishing your parents would come back and restore some fucking order in your house. It's not a perfect analogy, but the sense I get of my generation of writers and intellectuals or whatever is that it's 3:00 A.M. and the couch has several burn-holes and somebody's thrown up in the umbrella stand and we're wishing the revel would end. The postmodern founders' patricidal work was great, but patricide produces orphans, and no amount of revelry can make up for the fact that writers my age have been literary orphans throughout our formative years. We're kind of wishing some parents would come back. And of course we're uneasy about the fact that we wish they'd come back--I mean, what's wrong with us? Are we total pussies? Is there something about authority and limits we actually need? And then the uneasiest feeling of all, as we start gradually to real ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
The moment he recognized what exactly was on one cartridge he had a strong anxious feeling that there was something more entertaining on another cartridge and that he was potentially missing it. He realized that he would have plenty of time to enjoy all the cartridges, and realized intellectually that the feeling of deprived panic over missing something made no sense. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Yeah, she must work round here. Lot of high class escorts i. this area. And traffic wardens, too. She's probably one or the other. ~ Danny Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Danny Wallace
I think if you've got a good idea it will stand out in one of the different mediums. For example, something might happen to me today and it could be something to talk about tomorrow on the radio, or I can write about it, or perhaps it will be best suited to telly. ~ Danny Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Danny Wallace
The figures of the past go cloaked.
They walk in mist and rain and snow
And go, go slowly, but they go. ~ Wallace Stevens
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by Wallace Stevens
As each person's sandal hits the pier, a sociolinguistic transformation from cruiser to tourist is effected. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mcclymonds Wallace quotes by David Foster Wallace
Over half the admits to psych wards are things like cheerleaders who swallow two bottles of Mydol over a high-school breakup or gray lonely asexual depressing people rendered inconsolable
by the death of a pet. The cathartic
trauma of actually going in somewhere officially Psych-, some understanding nods, some bare indication somebody gives half a damn – they rally, back out they go. ~ David Foster Wallace
