Many people are willing to be God-centered as long as they feel that God is man-centered ~ John Piper
Man Centered quotes by John Piper
And what is justice? The princess thought of that proud word 'justice'. All the complex laws of man centered for her in one clear and simple law - the law of love and self-sacrifice taught us by Him who lovingly suffered for mankind though He Himself was God. What had she to do with justice or injustice of other people? She had to endure and love, and that she did. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Man Centered quotes by Leo Tolstoy
The third group called to silence is women. This group is not composed of all women all the time but rather of specific women who were asking questions and speaking in the service. The larger context of these verses demands that we understand these questioning women to be a disruption of the peace and order of the service. This is the reason Paul wrote that 'women should keep silent in the churches' (v. 34). Paul's concern is not just with women (for men too are called to be silent in church); his broader concern is with silence, peace, and order in the worship assembly. This perspective allows us rightly to understand the rest of this chapter, 14:34-40. Paul next tells these specific women to 'be in submission.' We tend to think of this as submission to MEN, but the larger context makes this improbable. Our patriarchal and man-centered culture over the millennia has distorted the meaning of this command to submit. Rather than commanding submission to men, the apostle is commanding SUBMISSION TO THE ORDER OF THE WORSHIP SERVICE, that is, submission to the Holy Spirit. This reading helps us understand the next phrase: 'even as the law says.' Normally LAW in Paul refers to the Old Testament, but it can also have a wider meaning. Nowhere in the Old Testament are women called to be silent, nor are they called to submit to their husbands. Yet there is excellent evidence for biblical and broadly Jewish concern for SILENCE IN WORSHIP before God or the Word of God or while learning f ~ Alan G. Padgett
Man Centered quotes by Alan G. Padgett
Without the infinite personal God, all a person can do, as Nietzsche points out, is to make systems. In today's speech we would call them gameplans. A person can erect some sort of structure, some type of limited frame in which he lives, shutting himself up in that frame and not looking beyond it. ~ Francis A. Schaeffer
Man Centered quotes by Francis A. Schaeffer
Setting the stage for the Tower of Babel, the author says that, while humanity had a mission to reflect God, it had been distracted by its own reflection and was both fascinated and fearful of what it saw. ~ N. T. Wright
Man Centered quotes by N. T. Wright
To aid and abet in the destruction of a single species or in the extermination of a single tribe is to commit a crime against God, a mortal sin against Mother Nature. Better by far to sacrifice in some degree the interests of mechanical civilization, curtail our gluttonous appetite for things, ever more things, learn to moderate our needs, and most important, and not difficult, learn to control, limit and gradually reduce our human numbers. We humans swarm over the planet like a plague of locusts, multiplying and devouring. There is no justice, sense or decency in this mindless global breeding spree, this obscene anthropoid fecundity, this industrialized mass production of babies and bodies, ever more bodies and babies. The man-centered view of the world in anti-Christian, anti-Buddhist, antinature, antilife, and
antihuman. ~ Edward Abbey
Man Centered quotes by Edward Abbey
Classical theology has erred in its insistence that theology be 'God-centered,' not 'man-centered'. ~ Robert H. Schuller
Man Centered quotes by Robert H. Schuller
Knowing why we are married & should stay married is crucial. The key question is: Will we approach marriage from a God-centered view or a man-centered view? In a man-centered view, we will maintain our marriage as long as our earthly comforts, desires, & expectations are met. In a God-centered view, we preserve our marriage because it brings glory to God & points a sinful world to a reconciling Creator. ~ G. Thomas
Man Centered quotes by G. Thomas
We humans are the culmination of God's efforts. The Torah is man centered under God centered. It's like TWIN pillars, TWIN centers. It's NOT JUST God centered. ~ Dennis Prager
Man Centered quotes by Dennis Prager
Legalism is man-centered; discipline is God-centered. ~ Barbara Hughes
Man Centered quotes by Barbara Hughes
We owe a huge debt to Galileo for emancipating us all from the stupid belief in an Earth-centered or man-centered (let alone God-centered) system. He quite literally taught us our place and allowed us to go on to make extraordinary advances in knowledge. ~ Christopher Hitchens
Man Centered quotes by Christopher Hitchens
Your rival has ten weak points, whereas you have ten strong ones. Although his army is large, it is not irresistible.
"Yuan Shao is too caught up in ceremony and show while you, on the other hand, are more practical. He is often antagonistic and tends to force things, whereas you are more conciliatory and try to guide things to their proper courses, giving you the advantage of popular support. His extravagance hinders his administrative ability while your better efficiency is a great contribution to the government, granting you the edge of a well-structured and stable administration. On the outside he is very kind and giving but on the inside he is grudging and suspicious. You are just the opposite, appearing very exacting but actually very understanding of your followers' strengths and weaknesses. This grants you the benefit of tolerance. He lacks commitment where you are unfaltering in your decisions, promptly acting on your plans with full faith that they will succeed. This shows an advantage in strategy and decisiveness. He believes a man is only as good as his reputation, which contrasts with you, who looks beyond this to see what kind of person they really are. This demonstrates that you are a better judge of moral character. He only pays attention to those followers close to him, while your vision is all-encompassing. This shows your superior supervision. He is easily misled by poor advice, whereas you maintain sound judgment even if beset by evil council. This is ~ Luo Guanzhong
Man Centered quotes by Luo Guanzhong
One of his co-workers told me one time when I was about 20 years old, "I like your dad. He hates me, but the thing about your old man is that he hates everyone the same." I've ~ Eric Greitens
Man Centered quotes by Eric Greitens
Even a man who's pure in heart
And says his prayers by night,
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright. ~ Curt Siodmak
Man Centered quotes by Curt Siodmak
Science aims at constructing a world which shall be symbolic of the world of commonplace experience. It is not at all necessary that every individual symbol that is used should represent something in common experience or even something explicable in terms of common experience. The man in the street is always making this demand for concrete explanation of the things referred to in science; but of necessity he must be disappointed. It is like our experience in learning to read. That which is written in a book is symbolic of a story in real life. The whole intention of the book is that ultimately a reader will identify some symbol, say BREAD, with one of the conceptions of familiar life. But it is mischievous to attempt such identifications prematurely, before the letters are strung into words and the words into sentences. The symbol A is not the counterpart of anything in familiar life. ~ Arthur Stanley Eddington
Man Centered quotes by Arthur Stanley Eddington
Nonetheless, some prototype chimp suits had been developed, including the "SPCA Suit" - certified humane by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "To prove that a suit was safe for a man, we were going to test it on a chimp, but to prove the suit was safe for a chimp, we had to test it on a man," U.S. Spacesuits coauthor Joe McMann said in an email. "That was a mind boggler. ~ Mary Roach
Man Centered quotes by Mary Roach
No, he is not a ghost; he is a man of Heaven and earth, that is all.
~ Gaston Leroux
Man Centered quotes by Gaston Leroux
And the man clad in black and silver with a silver rose upon him? He would like to think that he has learned something of trust, that he has washed his eyes in some clear spring, that he has polished an ideal or two. Never Mind. He may still be only a smart-mouthed meddler, skilled mainly in the minor art of survival, blind as ever the dungeons knew him to the finer shades of irony. Never mind, let it go, let it be. I may never be pleased with him. ~ Roger Zelazny
Man Centered quotes by Roger Zelazny
Falling in love doesn't always lead to heartbreak, honey. With the right man, it can be a one-way ticket to paradise. ~ Catherine Anderson
Man Centered quotes by Catherine Anderson
When a man has displayed talent in some particular path, and left all competitors behind him in it, the world are too apt to give him credit for universality of genius, and to anticipate for him success in all that he undertakes. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
Man Centered quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
A woman is at the funeral of her mother. There, she meets a man she doesn't know and has never met, who she thinks is her dream partner. But because of the circumstances, she forgets to ask for his number, and she can't find him afterward. A few days later, she kills her own sister. Why? ~ Jodi Picoult
Man Centered quotes by Jodi Picoult
It's called basic human decency, and I deserve no credit for doing what every man should. ~ Courtney Milan
Man Centered quotes by Courtney Milan
The common man, no matter how sharp and tough, actually enjoys having the wool pulled over his eyes, and makes it easier for the puller. ~ P.T. Barnum
Man Centered quotes by P.T. Barnum
The sea had jeeringly kept his finite body up, but drowned the infinite of his soul. Not drowned entirely, though. Rather carried down alive to wondrous depths, where strange shapes of the unwarped primal world glided to and fro before his passive eyes; and the miser-merman, Wisdom, revealed his hoarded heaps; and among the joyous, heartless, ever-juvenile eternities, Pip saw the multitudinous, God-omnipresent, coral insects, that out of the firmament of waters heaved the colossal orbs. He saw God's foot upon the treadle of the loom, and spoke it; and therefore his shipmates called him mad. So man's insanity is heaven's sense; and wandering from all mortal reason, man comes at last to that celestial thought, which, to reason, is absurd and frantic; and weal or woe, feels then uncompromised, indifferent as his God. ~ Herman Melville
Man Centered quotes by Herman Melville
Man matures when he stops believing that politics solves his problems. ~ Nicolas Gomez Davila
Man Centered quotes by Nicolas Gomez Davila
A man may twist as he pleases, and do what he pleases, but he inevitably comes back to the track to which nature has destined him. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Man Centered quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Understand me: I wish to be a man from somewhere, a man among men. You see, a slave, when he passes by, weary and surly, carrying a heavy load, limping along and looking down at his feet, only at his feet to avoid falling down; he is in his town, like a leaf in greenery, like a tree in a forest, argos surrounds him, heavy and warm, full of herself; I want to be that slave, Electra, I want to pull the city around me and to roll myself up in it like a blanket. I will not leave. ~ Jean-Paul Sartre
Man Centered quotes by Jean-Paul Sartre
Among us, on the other hand, 'the righteous man lives by faith.' Now, if you take away positive affirmation, you take away faith, for without positive affirmation nothing is believed. And there are truths about things unseen, and unless they are believed, we cannot attain to the happy life, which is nothing less than life eternal. It is a question whether we ought to argue with those who profess themselves ignorant not only about the eternity yet to come but also about their present existence, for they [the Academics] even argue that they do not know what they cannot help knowing. For no one can 'not know' that he himself is alive. If he is not alive, he cannot 'not know' about it or anything else at all, because either to know or to 'not know' implies a living subject. But, in such a case, by not positively affirming that they are alive, the skeptics ward off the appearance of error in themselves, yet they do not make errors simply by showing themselves alive; one cannot err who is not alive. That we live is therefore not only true, but it is altogether certain as well. And there are many things that are thus true and certain concerning which, if we withhold positive assent, this ought not to be regarded as a higher wisdom but actually a sort of dementia. ~ Augustine Of Hippo
Man Centered quotes by Augustine Of Hippo
God, why does a mortal man have children? It is senseless to love anything this much. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Man Centered quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
But we all know the wag's definition of a philanthropist: a man whose charity increases directly as the square of the distance. ~ George Eliot
Man Centered quotes by George Eliot
I take off my shirt, I show you.
I shaved the hair out under my arms.
I roll up my pants, I scraped off the hair
on my legs with a knife, getting white.

My hair is the color of chopped maples.
My eyes dark as beans cooked in the south.
(Coal fields in the moon on torn-up hills)

Skin polished as a Ming bowl
showing its blood cracks, its age, I have hundreds
of names for the snow, for this, all of them quiet.

In the night I come to you and it seems a shame
to waste my deepest shudders on a wall of a man.

You recognize strangers,
think you lived through destruction.
You can't explain this night, my face, your memory.

You want to know what I know?
Your own hands are lying. ~ Carolyn Forche
Man Centered quotes by Carolyn Forche
I started out to be honest,
with everything on the square.
But a man can't fool with the Golden Rule
in a crowd that won't play fair.

You don't go down with a hard, short fall,
you just sort of shuffle along.
And loosen your load of the moral code,
'till you can't tell right from wrong. ~ Clarence Leonard Hay
Man Centered quotes by Clarence Leonard Hay
Being the rational animal, man must be capable of thinking if he really wants to. Still, it may be that man wants to think, but cannot. ~ Martin Heidegger
Man Centered quotes by Martin Heidegger
We talk of wild animals, but the wildest animal is man. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
Man Centered quotes by Gilbert K. Chesterton
And would I be able to forgive him or myself if it crossed the mark? I loved this man and all of his flaws. I knew that he wasn't perfect. He was human, and had secrets that would make stronger women than me flee. But that was the beauty of love. It made us stronger. It gave us hearts of steel and guts of iron. I had a shield around me that could withstand a war for this man. I had a passion that could overcome mountains. My love for Xavier burned in my soul and ran through my veins, and I was willing to take this chance. I needed to show him that I could be there for him. ~ J.S. Cooper
Man Centered quotes by J.S. Cooper
What nature does blindly, slowly and ruthlessly, man may do providently, quickly, and kindly. As it lies within his power, so it becomes his duty to work in that direction. ~ Francis Galton
Man Centered quotes by Francis Galton
As I've told my three daughters, all of whom I've at one time encouraged to go into macro trading, any man or woman can do anything to which they set their heart and mind. ~ Paul Tudor Jones
Man Centered quotes by Paul Tudor Jones
Come out today," he said the next morning. "You can come help me finish burnin'."
I smiled, knowing he didn't need my help at all. But I loved it when he phrased it that way.
"Oh, okay!" I said, rubbing my eyes. "What should I wear?"
Marlboro Man laughed, probably wondering how many years would pass before I'd quit asking that question. ~ Ree Drummond
Man Centered quotes by Ree Drummond
Everyone wanted so many things from her - to believe in herself & to see her own true beauty, but not to be conceited, to know her place. Be more than your looks, but never speak out of turn. Don't be defined by love, but remember, you're nothing without it. Be a princess. Find you price. You dont meed a man to complete you. Stand on your own two feet. ~ Kate Stayman-London
Man Centered quotes by Kate Stayman-London
Man loves malice, but not against one-eyed men nor the unfortunate, but against the fortunate and proud. ~ Martial
Man Centered quotes by Martial
The notion of the measuring scale is critical in Hindu thought. The value of an object depends on the scale being followed. And since all scales are man-made, all values are artificial. Thus all opinions ultimately are delusions, based on man-made measuring scales. ~ Devdutt Pattanaik
Man Centered quotes by Devdutt Pattanaik
Though we call God our Father, own Him to be the disposer of all things, and that His word is truth; yet we will not give Him that trust which we give to mortal unfaithful man. ~ Howell Harris
Man Centered quotes by Howell Harris
They, OLDEFO (Old Established Forces), carry out l'exploitation de l'homme par 'homme (the exploitation of man by man). Do not let them live, so that there's no colonialism anymore in the world. ~ Sukarno
Man Centered quotes by Sukarno
Women's Aid is a fantastic charity which has my full support. I am proud to call myself a Real Man, a man who will stand up against domestic violence. ~ Neil Fox
Man Centered quotes by Neil Fox
You should be home sleeping. What is the use of having a man in the house, if he cannot take care of you for a while?"
"Mmm," I said. "I give up. What's the use of having a man in the house? ~ Patricia Briggs
Man Centered quotes by Patricia Briggs
When a man learns to love, he must bear the risk of hatred. ~ Masashi Kishimoto
Man Centered quotes by Masashi Kishimoto
It is not the conscience which raises a blush, for a man may sincerely regret some slight fault committed in solitude, or he may suffer the deepest remorse for an undetected crime, but he will not blush ... It is not the sense of guilt, but the thought that others think or know us to be guilty which crimsons the face. ~ Charles Darwin
Man Centered quotes by Charles Darwin
When she left I realized my roommate, Dave, was awake the whole time and was witness to my entire interaction with Heather. He said something like, 'Good try, man. Just remember, if Christ wants something to happen it will, but it will happen in his time.' which was my first real taste of the born-again-flavored shit pie he was going to force-feed down my throat every day of our freshman year. ~ Chad Kultgen
Man Centered quotes by Chad Kultgen
It is requisite the government be so constituted as one man need not be afraid of another. ~ Baron De Montesquieu
Man Centered quotes by Baron De Montesquieu
You are the only judge of whether a piece of art is a piece of art! It's the average man who is the judge. It's not the effete academic who will determine whether a piece of art is a piece of art anymore than an academic can tell you whether a baseball player is really a great baseball player. It's the fan in the stadium that will tell you whether he's a great baseball player. ~ Michael Savage
Man Centered quotes by Michael Savage
Well, if I am a man, a man I must become. ~ Rudyard Kipling
Man Centered quotes by Rudyard Kipling
When the time came that His first-born, the Saviour, should come into the world and take a tabernacle, the Father came Himself and favoured that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it. ~ Brigham Young
