I just think that culturally, women - we're all human beings - but at least we don't have our masculinity to prove. ~ Gloria Steinem
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Gloria Steinem
What we needed to raise in others was this instinct. The ability to recognize, in an instant, right from wrong. The clarity of mind to face it rather than ignore it. I learned that before they had chased Brock, they had checked on me. Masculinity is often defined by physicality, but that initial kneeling is as powerful as the leg sweep, the tackling. Masculinity is found in the vulnerability, the crying. ~ Chanel Miller
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Chanel Miller
The school remained open. I thanked Allah that the Americans operated differently. Had the Lebanese lost 241 men in one day, and had we the power and the reach, we would have American males hung from their testicles and set on fire. The frame of mind that dictates our actions quashes our ability to develop the power and reach exhibited by the Americans, I thought. ~ Sam Wazan
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Sam Wazan
And if all womankind banded together and took the male path, the world would turn into one huge brothel. ~ M. Ageyev
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by M. Ageyev
Every film comes out of an intuition, where I'm at, at that moment in particular. But looking back on my work, somehow I get back to masculinity and how men are taught to avoid showing how fragile they can be, or to people who are in constant movement. ~ Omar Zuniga
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Omar Zuniga
Scientists can test only what they do not take for granted. That can make studying familiar phenomena particularly challenging...This may be especially true of masculinity, femininity and sexuality, because certain ideas abut gender and sexuality are so broadly shared in our culture ~ Rebecca M. Jordan-Young
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Rebecca M. Jordan-Young
Unlink masculinity from domination and violence and femininity from subordination and obedience. ~ Riane Eisler
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Riane Eisler
He scraped through the dark sand to the center house, two stories, both pouring bands of light into the fog. There was warmth and gaiety within, through the downstairs window he could see young people gathered around a piano, their singing mocking the forces abroad on this cruel night. She was there, proptected by happiness and song and the good. He was separated from her only by a sand yard and a dark fence, by a lighted window and by her protectors.
He stood there until he was trembling with pity and rage. Then he fled, but his flight was slow as the flight in a dream, impeded by the deep sand and the blurring hands of the fog. He fled from the goodness of that home, and his hatred for Laurel throttled his brain. If she had come back to him, he would not be shut out, an outcast in a strange, cold world. ~ Dorothy B. Hughes
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Dorothy B. Hughes
How does ANY male-identified person know he is a man? And does my answer really diverge greatly from how many men, trans or cisgender, would answer?

Transgender people are often said to have a 'narrative' to their lives; we're encouraged to see our journey toward recognizing our gender as a story with an articulable pattern. The truth is, though, that everyone's gender is a story; it's just that trans folks are more likely to be - perhaps I could say "are given the gift of having to be" - aware of it.

The story of becoming a man, a woman, or a person of any other gender often follows aspects of that most instinctual of story arcs: the hero's journey. For instance, my personal narrative was one of effort in seeking a transformative goal (a quest), assistance (tools provided by medicine, law, and intangible emotional support), and mentorship by those who went before me (guides). And my manhood was ultimately achieved through what could be considered rites of passage - which is to say a similar structure to communal cultural tales of how one achieves cisgender manhood. It's simply some details that vary.

I do see one key difference in how all this plays out, however: Trans men make this invisible process disconcertingly visible by flipping the variables. While a cisgender man may be born with certain inherent potentials to physically embody a manhood that others will acknowledge socially, he's not necessarily imbued with the demanding dri ~ Mitch Ellis
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Mitch Ellis
Part of the reason images of women in positions of authority are marked by their gender is that the very notion of authority is associated with maleness. ~ Deborah Tannen
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Deborah Tannen
Adam arrived at 735 Monroe Street prepared for the woman to be a bit skittish.
After all, she'd run from him earlier, obviously intimidated by his overwhelming masculinity and epic sexuality. Women often had that reaction to him, especially when he was stripping off his pants. Or kilt, depending on the century.
He was also prepared, however, for her inhibitions to drop swiftly, as did all women's when they got a good, close-up look at him.
After that, many simply launched themselves at him in a full-frontal assault of sexual frenzy. He'd been entertaining himself with just that possibility, his entire body tight with lust, while tracking her down with the information he'd obtained int he room called "Human Resources" at Little & Staller.
But nothing in his vast repertoire of experience had prepared him for Gabrielle O'Callaghan.
The bloodthirsty little hellion didn't react like any woman he'd ever encountered. She took one horrified look at him, drew back her arm, hauled off, and smashed him in the face with some kind of satchel she was holding.
Then slammed the door and locked it.
Leaving him on the doorstep, bleeding. Bleeding, by Danu, blood trickling from his lip! ~ Karen Marie Moning
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Karen Marie Moning
Can you please stop talking so I can go back to enjoying Daniel Craig's outrageously good body?" "That's so gay," JP said. "I'm a girl," said the Duke. "It's not gay for me to be attracted to men. Now, if I said you had a hot body, that would be gay, because you're built like a lady." "Oh, burn," I said. The Duke raised her eyes at me and said, "Although JP's a freaking paragon of masculinity compared to you." I had no response to that. "Keun is at work," I said. "He gets paid double on Christmas Eve." "Oh, right," said JP. "I forgot that Waffle Houses are like Lindsay Lohan's legs: always open. ~ John Green
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by John Green
Family life in Western society since the time of the Old Testament has been a struggle to maintain patriarchy, male domination, and double standards in the face of a natural drift towards monogamous bonding. Young men have been called upon to prove their masculinity by their willingness to die in warfare, and young women have been called upon to prove their femininity by their willingness to die for their man. Women have been asked to appear small, dumb, and helpless so men would feel big and strong, brave, and clever. It's been a trick. ~ Frank Pittman
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Frank Pittman
He towered over her, as intense and savage as only he could be, making her feel small and delicate in comparison, surrounded by his utter maleness. She felt trapped and she wanted to stay in his cage forever. ~ Cristiane Serruya
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Cristiane Serruya
Finding the Father

My friend, this body offers to carry us for nothing– as the ocean carries logs. So on some days the body wails with its great energy; it smashes up the boulders, lifting small crabs, that flow around the sides.

Someone knocks on the door. We do not have time to dress. He wants us to go with him through the blowing and rainy streets, to the dark house.

We will go there, the body says, and there find the father whom we have never met, who wandered out in a snowstorm the night we were born, and who then lost his memory, and has lived since longing for his child, whom he saw only once… while he worked as a shoemaker, as a cattle herder in Australia, as a restaurant cook who painted at night.

When you light the lamp you will see him. He sits there behind the door… the eyebrows so heavy, the forehead so light… lonely in his whole body, waiting for you. ~ Robert Bly
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Robert Bly
I never trust a man who tucks in his shirt by choice or neglects coffee in favor of tea. ~ Brian D'Ambrosio
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Brian D'Ambrosio
She was so delicate that, while we sat beneath the linden branches, a leaf would fall and drift down and touch her skin, and it would leave a bruise. So as we sat in the afternoon hour, beneath that fragrant linden bower, I had to chase all of the leafs that fell away. ~ Roman Payne
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Roman Payne
So, you're handed a baby and a new name (Daddy) and you now have to choose to accept the challenge. Here's the thing. I don't believe that rejecting it's an option. I mean, people DO reject it. But you shouldn't. You choose then and there to be a father. And you make that choice, day in and day out to make sure their needs are met, that the example is set for them, that they are loved, cherished, corrected, and challenged. You have to choose it. ~ Josh Hatcher
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Josh Hatcher
If all pleasure has, preserved within it, earlier pain, then here pain, as pride in bearing it, is raised directly, untransformed, as a stereotype, to pleasure: unlike wine, each glass of whisky, each inhalation of cigar smoke, still recalls the repugnance that it cost the organism to become attuned to such strong stimuli, and this alone is registered as pleasure. ~ Theodor W. Adorno
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Theodor W. Adorno
He liked being the bigger man of the two, even though it wasn't by much, he liked the way his solid rugby player's build matched and countered Jonah's athletic strength. But there was something about Jonah's body hair, that incontrovertible evidence of his masculinity, that made Ben feel…not that he was less manly, precisely, but that Jonah was more so. ~ K.J. Charles
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by K.J. Charles
When I applied for a handicap parking pass, they wouldn't take maleness as a medical condition. ~ Katie Graykowski
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Katie Graykowski
This fear of maleness that they inspire estranges men from every female in their lives to greater or lesser degrees, and men feel the loss. Ultimately, one of the emotional costs of allegiance to patriarchy is to be seen as unworthy of trust. If women and girls in patriarchal culture are taught to see every male, including the males with whom we are intimate, as potential rapists and murderers, then we cannot offer them our trust, and without trust there is no love. ~ Bell Hooks
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Bell Hooks
Identity is marketed in national capitalism as a property. It is something you can purchase, or purchase a relation to. Or it is something you already own that you can express: my masculinity, my queerness . But identity need not be simply a caption for an image of an unchangeable concrete self. It is also a theory of the future, of history. ~ Lauren Berlant
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Lauren Berlant
Now, any other man in Cedar Dell would catch hell for wearing a pink shirt. Not Nicholas Sutherland. He'd still ooze masculinity if he wore pink sneakers and socks with purple pom-poms. ~ Emily March
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Emily March
I'm confident enough in my masculinity and sexuality that I can say that Ryan Gosling is just dreamy in this movie. ~ J. Lynn
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by J. Lynn
We New Yorkers see more death and violence than most soldiers do, grow a thick chitin on our backs, grimace like a rat and learn to do a disappearing act. Long ago we outgrew the need to be blowhards about our masculinity; we leave that to the Alaskans and Texans, who have more time for it. ~ Edward Hoagland
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Edward Hoagland
Guys, you don't have to act "manly" to be considered a man; you are a man, so just be yourself. You don't have to prove your masculinity to anyone. ~ Miya Yamanouchi
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Miya Yamanouchi
If men and women were surer of their God there would be more genuine manliness, womanliness, and godliness in the world, and a whole lot less fear of each other. ~ Elisabeth Elliot
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Elisabeth Elliot
Both spouses are equal, yet different. One of the most beautiful things about a relationship is that the feminine energy can feed a masculine man's heart. And, the masculine energy can totally light up the feminine energy. ~ Renee Wade
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Renee Wade
My masculinity isn't hinged on whether or not I knit. ~ Robin Green
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Robin Green
We've all heard that women tolerate sex to get relationships, while men tolerate relationships to get sex. That is simply not true - but there is something truly chilling about the fact that most Americans believe it's true and use this formula as a guide for behavior. ~ Israel Morrow
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Israel Morrow
I got into sports because that was a way to prove your masculinity. I was good at it. ~ Caitlyn Jenner
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Caitlyn Jenner
When you say lone gunman, everyone talks about loners and guns, but not about men ~ Rebecca Solnit
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Rebecca Solnit
[Asiaticus responds] Ask your sons, Suillius. They will testify to my masculinity. ~ Tacitus
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Tacitus
Every woman knows that any man engaging in street harassment can switch to anger very quickly and that anger goes to rage and their rage is their masculinity being threatened. We're scared for good reason. ~ Rose McGowan
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Rose McGowan
The bonding of women that is woman-loving, or Gyn/affection, is very different from male bonding. Male bonding has been the glue of male dominance. It has been based upon recognition of the difference men see between themselves and women, and is a form of the behaviour, masculinity, that creates and maintains male power ... Male comradeship/bonding depends upon energy drained from women. ~ Sheila Jeffreys
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Sheila Jeffreys
Christ is the ground of our masculinity. He took Adamic humanity into the grave with him, and emerged with a new way to be human, and a renewed way of being a man. ~ Joe Rigney
Maleness Vs Masculinity quotes by Joe Rigney
Physical development was alleged to assist spiritual and intellectual development, while also helping safeguard boys from the 'solitary and sexual sin' of masturbation. ~ Martin Crotty
