Sometimes we have to do a thing in order to find out the reason for it. Sometimes our actions are questions, not answers. ~ John Le Carre
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by John Le Carre
When Rochambeau put to death 500 at Le Cap and buried them in a large hole dug while they waited for execution, Dessalines raised gibbets of branches and hanged 500 for Rochambeau and the whites in Le Cap to see. But neither Dessalines' army nor his ferocity won the victory. It was the people. They burned San Domingo flat so that at the end of the war it was a charred desert. Why do you burn everything? asked a French officer of a prisoner. We have a right to burn what we cultivate because a man has a right to dispose of his own labour, was the reply of this unknown anarchist. ~ C.L.R. James
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by C.L.R. James
Her mind takes a picture of him, shirtless and wearing only his low-slung jeans. To be kept for later, when he is no longer around. ~ Georgia Le Carre
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Georgia Le Carre
But dreams come through stone walls, light up dark rooms, or darken light ones, and their persons make their exits and their entrances as they please, and laugh at locksmiths. ~ J. Sheridan Le Fanu
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
By the age of 9 or 10, I knew that I had to cut my own cloth and make my own way. ~ John Le Carre
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by John Le Carre
Living, being in the world, was a much greater and stranger thing than she had ever dreamed. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
Meaning - this is perhaps the common note, the bane I am seeking. What is the Meaning of this book, this event in the book, this story ... ? Tell me what it Means.

But that is not my job, honey. That's your job. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
A man might spend a lifetime reading spiritual books and studying the writings of the great mystics. He might feel that he had penetrated the secrets of the heavens and the earth, but unless this knowledge was incorporated into his very nature and transformed him, it was sterile. I began to suspect that a simple man of faith, praying to God with little understanding but with a full heart, might be worth more than the most learned student of the spiritual sciences. ~ Charles Le Gai Eaton
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Charles Le Gai Eaton
Writing about our life in the House of Arcamand in the City State of Etra, I fall back into it and see it as I saw it then, from inside and from below, with nothing to compare it to, and as if it were the only way things could possibly be. Children see the world that way. So do most slaves. Freedom is largely a matter of seeing that there are alternatives. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
I never had a gift but one, to know when the great wheel gives to a touch, to know and act. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
The one thing a writer has to have is a pencil and some paper. That's enough, so long as she knows that she and she alone is in charge of that pencil, and responsible, she and she alone, for what it writes on that paper. In other words, that she's free. Not wholly free. Never wholly free. Maybe very partially. Maybe only in this one act, this sitting for a snatched moment being a woman writing, fishing the mind's lake. But in this, responsible; in this autonomous; in this free.
(- from The Fisherwoman's Daughter) ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
The revolution is in the individual spirit, or it is nowhere. It is for all or it is nothing. If it is seen as having any end, it will never truly begin. We can't stop here. We must go on. We must take the risks. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
I have not written for their pleasure ... I have never flattered their opinions, nor their pride; nor will I. Neither will I make "Ladies' books" al dilettar le femine e la plebe. I have written from the fulness of my mind, from passion, from impulse, from many sweet motives, but not for their "sweet voices."
I know the precise worth of popular applause, for few scribblers have had more of it; and if I chose to swerve into their paths, I could retain it, or resume it. But I neither love ye, nor fear ye; and though I buy with ye and sell with ye, I will neither eat with ye, drink with ye, nor pray with ye. ~ George Gordon Byron
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by George Gordon Byron
Art is craft: all art is always and essentially a work of craft: but in the true work of art, before the craft and after it, is some essential durable core of being, which is what the craft works on, and shows, and sets free. The statue in the stone. How does the artist find that, see it, before it's visible? That is a real question. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
...if I had not been able to come out of the operation alive, he would change his name to mine and continue living my life for me. ~ Qiao Yi
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Qiao Yi
We have Trumpist (ph) tendencies in Europe. Look up Marine Le Pen in France. Look at the Five Star Movement headed by a clown by profession, Beppe Grillo, in Italy. ~ Lionel Barber
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Lionel Barber
He wondered whether there was any love between human beings that did not rest upon some sort of self-delusion ... ~ John Le Carre
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by John Le Carre
Nature intends that, at fixed periods, men should succeed each other by the instrumentality of death. We shall never outwit Nature; we shall die as usual. ~ Bernard Le Bovier De Fontenelle
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Bernard Le Bovier De Fontenelle
I end up watching this movie about some girl who's supposed to be so smart and edgy and unpopular. She wears glasses, that's how you know she's so smart. And she's the only one that has dark hair in the school- a place that looks like Planet Blond.

Anyway, she somehow ends up going to the prom- hello, gag- and she doesn't wear her glasses, so suddenly she's all beautiful. And she's bashful and shy because she doesn't feel comfortable wearing a dress. But then the guy says something like, "Wow, I never knew you were so pretty," and she feels on top of the world.

So, basically, the whole point is she's pretty. Oh, and smart, too. But what's really important here is that she's pretty.

For a second I think about Katie. About her thin little Clarissa Le Fey.

It must be a pain being fat. There are NO fat people on Planet Blond.

I don't get it. I mean, even movies where the actress is smart- like they seem like they'd be smart in real life, they're all gorgeous. And they usually get a boyfriend somewhere in the story. Even if they say they don't want one. They always, always end up falling in love, and you're supposed to be like, "Oh, good."

I once said this to my mom, and she laughed. "Honey, Hollywood... reality- two different universes. Don't make yourself crazy."

Which made me feel pretty pathetic. Like I didn't know the difference between a movie and the real world.

But then when eve ~ Mariah Fredericks
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Mariah Fredericks
Isolated, he may be a cultivated individual; in a crowd, he is a barbarian - that is, a creature acting by instinct. ~ Gustave Le Bon
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Gustave Le Bon
I move my lips when I read
I'm painfully slow
so I like really good English. ~ John Le Carre
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by John Le Carre
As for the doctor's mind, though intelligent and certainly well-meaning, it was a jumble of intellectual artifacts even more confusing than all the gadgets, appliances, and coneniences that filled the ship. These latter Shevek found entertaining; everything was so lavish, stylish, and inventive; but the furniture of Kimoe's intellect he did not find so comfortable. Kimoe's ideas never seemed to be able to go in a straight line; they had to walk around this and avoid that. There were walls around all his thoughts, and he seemed utterly unaware of them, though he was perpetually hiding behind them. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
If there are frontiers between the civilised and the barbaric, between the meaningful and the unmeaning, they are not lines on a map nor are they regions of the earth. They are boundaries of the mind alone. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
We read books to find out who we are. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
Our own epoch is determining, day by day, its own style. Our eyes, unhappily, are unable yet to discern it. ~ Le Corbusier
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Le Corbusier
When seventeenth-century Jesuit missionary Paul Le Jeune lectured a Montagnais Indian man about the dangers of the rampant infidelity he'd witnessed, Le Jeune received a lesson on proper parenthood in response. The missionary recalled, "I told him that it was not honorable for a woman to love any one else except her husband, and that this evil being among them, he himself was not sure that his son, who was there present, was his son. He replied, 'Thou hast no sense. You French people love only your own children; but we all love all the children of our tribe.'"5 ~ Christopher Ryan
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Christopher Ryan
It win be a device that will permit communication without any time interval between two points in space. The device will not transmit messages, of course; simultaneity is identity. But to our perceptions, that simultaneity will function as a transmission, a sending. So we will be able to use it to talk between worlds, without the long waiting for the message to go and the reply to return that electromagnetic impulses require. It is really a very simple matter. Like a kind of telephone. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
We spent a lot of time on the beach when I was young so I'd also take pictures of seaweed and crabs. ~ Graeme Le Saux
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Graeme Le Saux
Solitude was his fate; he was trapped in his heredity. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Droit Gatineau quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
To possess another language is to possess another soul. ~ John Le Carre

What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy? ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
