During the last two decades of the nineteenth century and the first of the twentieth, France enjoyed an upsurge of artistic flourishing that became known as La Belle Epoque. It was a time of change that heralded both art nouveau and post impressionism, when painters as diverse as Monet, Cezanne and Toulouse Lautrec worked. It was an age of extremes, when Proust and Anatole France were fashionable along with the notorious Monsieur Willy, Colette's husband. On the decorative arts, Mucha, Gallé and Lalique were enjoying success; and the theatre Lugné-Poe was introducing the grave works of Ibsen at the same time as Parisians were enjoying the spectacle of the can-can of Hortense Schneider. Paris was the crossroads of a new and many-faceted culture, a culture that was predominately feminine in form, for, above all, la belle Epoque was the age of women. Women dominated the cultural scene. On the one hand, there was Comtesse Greffulhe, the patron of Proust and Maeterlinck, who introduced greyhound racing into France; Winaretta Singer, Princesse de Polignac, for whom Stravinsky wrote Renard; Misia Sert, the discoverer of Chanel and Diaghilev's closest friend. On the other were the great dancers of the Moulin Rouge, immortalised by Toulouse lautrec - Jane Avril, Yvette Guilbert, la Goulue; as well as such celebrated dramatic actresses as the great Sarah Bernhardt. It would not be possible to speak of La belle Epoque without the great courtesans who, in many ways, perfectly symbolize ~ Charles Castle

One cannot know what a man really is by
the end of a fortnight. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
We can boost our immune systems by strengthening our social networks and decreasing stress. ~ Jane McGonigal
Jane Avril quotes by Jane McGonigal
The critical scene of the mystery is when the detective enters. The action shifts to Sherlock's sitting room. The little Belgian man with the waxed moustache appears in the lobby of the grand hotel. The gentle old woman with a bag of knitting comes to visit her niece when the poison pen letters start going around the village. The private detective comes back to the office after a night of drinking and finds the woman with the cigarette and the veiled hat this is when things will change. ~ Maureen Johnson
Jane Avril quotes by Maureen Johnson
Everything I wear doesnt put me in the league of women. If I were a boy, I could look a lot prettier than a lot of boys I know. ~ Jane Birkin
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Birkin
AS A CHILD, I had an unquenchable thirst for novels," said Jane, ~ Charlie Lovett
Jane Avril quotes by Charlie Lovett
Certain things seeped into his memory. Like how Jane had called him "Saint Dominick" three months ago, which he'd thought odd at the time for a woman who should have believed him a fortune hunter. Or how she'd spoken of being tired of "waiting" for her "life to begin."
Good God. She really might have been talking about him then. About waiting for him to come after her. All this time…
No, he couldn't believe that. She'd only been seventeen when they'd ended things, and women that age were still feeling their way in life. She couldn't possibly have been carrying a torch for him all these years.
Why not? You've been carrying one for her.
He stifled a curse. Nonsense. He'd cut her out of his heart.
God, he was such a liar.
They were now well out of the city. She sat quietly beside him, obviously uncomfortable after what had happened between them.
She couldn't be any more uncomfortable than he was. He could still taste her mouth, still feel the moment when she'd turned to putty in his arms. He was aware of every inch of her that touched him now. Her hand lay in her lap, so close he could reach over and take it.
Or perhaps not. The last thing he needed was her shoving him off the phaeton, which she was liable to do if she took a mind to it. She was damned angry.
Though he wasn't entirely sure why. She was engaged to a very rich, very well-connected earl, all because Dom had set her free. So why did she look as if she wanted to throttle h ~ Sabrina Jeffries
Jane Avril quotes by Sabrina Jeffries
Optimism

More and more I have come to admire resilience.
Not the simple resistance of a pillow, whose foam
returns over and over to the same shape, but the sinuous
tenacity of a tree: finding the light newly blocked on one side,
it turns in another. A blind intelligence, true.
But out of such persistence arose turtles, rivers,
mitochondria, figs - all this resinous, unretractable earth. ~ Jane Hirshfield
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Hirshfield
I showed my magic to a civilian one time, and it got ugly. ~ Charlie Jane Anders
Jane Avril quotes by Charlie Jane Anders
If the withdrawal from Gaza goes badly, obviously, that will set us back. ~ Jane Harman
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Harman
I'm ill qualified to recommend myself to strangers. Mr. Darcy ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
I put some red stuff on my mouth and cheeks so I look healthy - any old red lip pencil and a lip colour from Dr. Hauschka in a crushed berry tone. I never put anything on my eyes, or I look like Joan Crawford. ~ Jane Birkin
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Birkin
Your camouflage and your world is created by conscious focusing and unconscious concentration. Only by turning your head away for a moment can you see what is beneath the seemingly solid pattern. By plunging into our ocean of value climate you can dive beneath your camouflage system and look up to see it, relatively foundationless, floating above you, moved, formed and directed by the shifting illusions caused by the wind of will, and the force of subconscious concentration and demand. ~ Jane Roberts
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Roberts
Something making you smile, Hunter?"
"Yeah! I never got a round of applause before."
"Maybe she was applauding me."
"Nah, she thinks I'm a stud, I can tell. ~ Jane Harvey-Berrick
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Harvey-Berrick
She certainly did not hate him. No; hatred had vanished long ago, and she had almost as long been ashamed of ever feeling a dislike against him, that could be so called. The respect created by the conviction of his valuable qualities, though at first unwillingly admitted, had for some time ceased to be repugnant to her feelings; and it was now heightened into somewhat of a friendlier nature, by the testimony so highly in his favour, and bringing forward his disposition in so amiable a light, which yesterday had produced. But above all, above respect and esteem, there was a motive within her of good will which could not be overlooked. It was gratitude.--Gratitude not merely for having once loved her, but for loving her still well enough, to forgive all the petulance and acrimony of her manner in rejecting him, and all the unjust accusations accompanying her rejection. He who, she had been persuaded, would avoid her as his greatest enemy, seemed, on this accidental meeting, most eager to preserve the acquaintance, and without any indelicate display of regard, or any peculiarity of manner, where their two selves only were concerned, was soliciting the good opinion of her friends, and bent on making her known to his sister. Such a change in a man of so much pride, excited not only astonishment but gratitude--for to love, ardent love, it must be attributed; and as such its impression on her was of a sort to be encouraged, as by no means unpleasing, though it could not exactly be d ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
She had gradually changed her name. "Jane" was too dull. Last year, she'd added a "y", becoming Jayne, which had more personality. ~ Caroline B. Cooney
Jane Avril quotes by Caroline B. Cooney
Other people's behavior is non of my business. ~ Jane Green
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Green
Genuine collaboration is an environment that promotes communication, learning, maximum contribution, and innovation. ~ Jane Ripley
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Ripley
In such cases, a woman has not often much beauty to think of." "But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
With such a worshipping wife, it was hardly possible that any natural defects in it should not be increased. The extreme sweetness of her temper must hurt his. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
Mrs. Ferrars was a little, thin woman, upright, even to formality, in her figure, and serious, even to sourness, in her aspect. Her complexion was sallow; and her features small, without beauty, and naturally without expression; but a lucky contraction of the brow had rescued her countenance from the disgrace of insipidity, by giving it the strong characters of pride and ill nature. She was not a woman of many words; for, unlike people in general, she proportioned them to the number of her ideas; and of the few syllables that did escape her, not one fell to the share of Miss Dashwood, whom she eyed with the spirited determination of disliking her at all events. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
You know you're in for a bad day when the Devil eats your last HobNob. ~ Jane Lovering
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Lovering
I never meant that," [Anyan] said, eventually. "I've never thought you were pathetic and I don't consider you half of anything." His voice was sad, the tone familiar yet unidentifiable that I wanted to scream. "You're Jane," he concluded, "and that's enough." He looked over at me, his face shadowed but his eyes still visible. ~ Nicole Peeler
Jane Avril quotes by Nicole Peeler
I take in his smooth cheeks, his rough chin and jaw, the developing wrinkles at the corners of his eyes.
'We fall in love with somebody who maybe seems like a bad match,' Tully says, 'and our friends run around saying 'What does he see in her?' What he sees in her is what's hidden from everyone else. He's fallen in love with something invisible.'
'Or possibly he's made a common mistake,' I say, gazing at Tully. 'He was needy. He fell for outward appearances. He projected onto this person whatever it was he'd always longed for in a relationship, whatever he hungered for in life. He fell in love with the idea of love.'
'That's a pretty cynical point of view,' Tully says. ~ Jane Lotter
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Lotter
You got pretty popular for a while there.'
'For about forty-eight hours,' I said. 'Just long enough to figure out that I don't want to be popular. ~ Mary Jane Auch
Jane Avril quotes by Mary Jane Auch
I self-medicate with fat, carbohydrates, and Jane Austen, my number one drug of choice, my constant companion through every breakup, every disappointment, every crisis. Men might come and go, but Jane Austen was always there. In sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, till death do us part. ~ Laurie Viera Rigler
Jane Avril quotes by Laurie Viera Rigler
Men fear that becoming 'we' will erase his 'I.' For women, our 'we' is our saving grace Women's relationships are like a renewable source of power. ~ Jane Fonda
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Fonda
Elinor now found the difference between the expectation of an unpleasant event, however certain the mind may be told to consider it, and certainty itself. She now found that, in spite of herself, she had always admitted a hope, while Edward remained single, that something would occur to prevent his marrying Lucy; that some resolution of his own, some mediation of friends, or some more eligible opportunity of establishment for the lady, would arise to assist the happiness of all. But he was now married; and she condemned her heart for the lurking flattery which so much heightened the pain of the intelligence. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
Frequent streets and short blocks are valuable because of the fabric of intricate cross-use that they permit among the users of a city neighbouhood. ~ Jane Jacobs
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Jacobs
He gave her to understand that he had looked at her with some earnestness. She knew it well; and she remembered another person's look also. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
From a night of more sleep than she had expected, Marianne awoke the next morning to the same consciousness of misery in which she had closed her eyes. ~ Jane Austen
Jane Avril quotes by Jane Austen
And there it is, my greatest challenge: to face the uncertainty of each day, trusting that there will be enough - enough to meet our needs and enough to give away. ~ Jane Kirkpatrick
