The sum of greatest is not asking 'What do I want to be' but rather 'Who do I want to be ~ Todd Stocker
Integrity In Science quotes by Todd Stocker
The spread, both in width and depth, of the
multifarious branches of knowledge during
the last hundred odd years has confronted us
with a queer dilemma. We feel clearly that we
are only now beginning to acquire reliable
material for welding together the sum total of all
that is known into a whole; but, on the other
hand, it has become next to impossible for a
single mind fully to command more than a small
specialized portion of it. I can see no other
escape from this dilemma ... than that some of us should venture to embark on a synthesis of facts and theories, albeit with second-hand and incomplete knowledge of some of them -and at the risk of making fools of ourselves. ~ Erwin Schrodinger
Integrity In Science quotes by Erwin Schrodinger
One hundred trout are needed to support one man for a year. The trout, in turn, must consume 90,000 frogs, that must consume 27 million grasshoppers that live off of 1,000 tons of grass. ~ G. Tyler Miller
Integrity In Science quotes by G. Tyler Miller
When I was small, I never wanted to step in puddles. Not because of any fear of drowned worms or wet stockings; I was by and large a grubby child, with a blissful disregard for filth of any kind.
It was because I couldn't bring myself believe that that perfect smooth expanse was no more than I thin film of water over solid earth. I believed it was an opening into some fathomless space. Sometimes, seeing the tiny ripples caused by my approach, I thought the puddle impossibly deep, a bottomless sea in which the lazy coil of a tentacle and gleam of scale lay hidden, with the threat of huge bodies and sharp teeth adrift and silent in the far-down depths.
And then, looking down into reflection, I would see my own round face and frizzled hair against a featureless blue sweep, and think instead that the puddle was the entrance to another sky. If I stepped in there, I would drop at once, and keep on falling, on and on, into blue space.
The only time I would dare walk though a puddle was at twilight, when the evening stars came out. If I looked in the water and saw one lighted pinprick there, I could slash through unafraid--for if I should fall into the puddle and on into space, I could grab hold of the star as I passed, and be safe.
Even now, when I see a puddle in my path, my mind half-halts--though my feet do not--then hurries on, with only the echo of the though left behind.
What if, this time, you fall? ~ Diana Gabaldon
Integrity In Science quotes by Diana Gabaldon
But in a subtler fashion. Science can destroy religion by ignoring it as well as ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Integrity In Science quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
Humans are just barely intelligent tool users; Darwinian evolutionary selection stopped when language and tool use converged, leaving the average hairy meme carrier sadly deficient in smarts. ~ Charles Stross
Integrity In Science quotes by Charles Stross
At his booming voice, her eyes flew open. If he wasn't already on the ground, he would have fallen to his knees. Sebastian was instantly lost. The ship fell away and there was only her. The blue of her eyes was indescribable, so light they unabashedly pulled him in. No color imaginable compared. Her eyes turned pleading. For what? He didn't know. But at that moment he would have given it to her. ~ Kiersten Fay
Integrity In Science quotes by Kiersten Fay
I'm a scientist. We don't talk about the spirit. Soul is a four letter word in our tradition. ~ Candace Pert
Integrity In Science quotes by Candace Pert
The very problem of mind and body suggests division; I do not know of anything so disastrously affected by the habit of division as this particular theme. In its discussion are reflected the splitting off from each other of religion, morals and science; the divorce of philosophy from science and of both from the arts of conduct. The evils which we suffer in education, in religion, in the materialism of business and the aloofness of "intellectuals" from life, in the whole separation of knowledge and practice
all testify to the necessity of seeing mind-body as an integral whole. ~ John Dewey
Integrity In Science quotes by John Dewey
The future mathematician ... should solve problems, choose the problems which are in his line, meditate upon their solution, and invent new problems. By this means, and by all other means, he should endeavor to make his first important discovery: he should discover his likes and dislikes, his taste, his own line. ~ George Polya
Integrity In Science quotes by George Polya
Sigmund Freud was a novelist with a scientific background. He just didn't know he was a novelist. All those damn psychiatrists after him, they didn't know he was a novelist either.
(Interview in Writers at Work: The Paris Review Interviews, Eighth Series, ed. George Plimpton, 1988) ~ John Irving
Integrity In Science quotes by John Irving
A scientist first has to presuppose any theory based on available relevant data. In terms of such presupposition, a scientist begins his journey of scientific exploration as a philosopher. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Integrity In Science quotes by Abhijit Naskar
If taken at face value, the miraculous explanation would tell us that science is not worth the trouble, that it will never yield the answers we seek, and that nature will forever be beyond all human understanding. Sterile and nonproductive in its consequences, the claim of miracle would put a lid on curiosity, experimentation, and the human creative imagination. ~ Kenneth R. Miller
Integrity In Science quotes by Kenneth R. Miller
Typically, only about 2 percent of the American populace tunes in to PBS's 'Nova' series - the most successful science show on the tube. 'Survivor' and 'X Factor' get twice the ratings. ~ Seth Shostak
Integrity In Science quotes by Seth Shostak
Masonry, according to the general acceptation of the term, is an art founded on the principles of geometry, and devoted to the service and convenience of mankind. But Freemasonry, embracing a wider range and having a nobler object in view, namely, the cultivation and improvement of the human mind, may with more propriety be called a science, inasmuch as, availing itself of the terms of the former, it inculcates the principles of the purest morality, though its lessons are for the most part veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. ~ William Howard Taft
Integrity In Science quotes by William Howard Taft
Our scientists all the more occupy advanced positions in the development of world science. By the example of their successes in the field of atomic energy, our scientists and technicians have vividly shown how much the increased might of the Soviet state and the further growth of its international authority depends on their efforts and practical successes. ~ Vyacheslav Molotov
Integrity In Science quotes by Vyacheslav Molotov
Nothing retains less of desire in art, in science, than this will to industry, booty, possession. ~ Andre Breton
Integrity In Science quotes by Andre Breton
I would cancel dialysis to be in the [hopefully upcoming Firefly] movie. ~ Nathan Fillion
Integrity In Science quotes by Nathan Fillion
I don't know what being god must feel like, but it can't be much different that being an inventor.
There is power in the idea that a certain product never existed before you thought of it, there is joy in the act of bringing the idea into reality and there is contentment in seeing the product come to life when it is being used. ~ Soumeet Lanka
Integrity In Science quotes by Soumeet Lanka
Paradox is the sharpest scalpel in the satchel of science. Nothing concentrates the mind as effectively, regardless of whether it pits two competing theories against each other, or theory against observation, or a compelling mathematical deduction against ordinary common sense. ~ Hans Christian Von Baeyer
Integrity In Science quotes by Hans Christian Von Baeyer

I bet you both are familiar with the purpose of a blast door and what it does to laser rounds? If I fire a laser round in here on an angle and then close this door that sucker is going to bounce around in there with you. Might even go through you a few times, make some holes. It's called fire-boarding by pirates and slavers, they use it to torture their victims. Sometimes they actually bet on how long a man will survive. I heard rumor the longest was about a day and a half for one fellow before the round finally ripped through his heart and finished him off. The cold helps keep the blood thick so you don't bleed out as fast. I'm willing to bet if I adjust this blaster a bit I can get it so you live longer than that. Nice radiation burns, loss of a few appendages, and who knows? Maybe you'll get a lucky bounce that will hit you in the heart or the head or maybe you'll just be praying that that next bounce is the one that will end it all. So who wants to avoid all that unpleasantness and tell me where my Sergeant is being taken?" - Reilly Campbell ~ J.J. Snow
Integrity In Science quotes by J.J. Snow
Natural understanding can take the place of almost every degree of culture, but no culture can take the place of natural understanding. The scholar has the advantage of such men in the possession of a wealth of cases and facts (historical knowledge) and of causal determinations (natural science), all in well-ordered connection, easily surveyed; but yet with all this he has not a more accurate and profound insight into what is truly essential in all these cases, facts, and causations. The unlearned man of acuteness and penetration knows how to dispense with this wealth; we can make use of much; we can do with little. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Integrity In Science quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
In my family, as in most middle-class Indian families I knew when I was growing up, science and mathematics were held in awe. ~ Aravind Adiga
Integrity In Science quotes by Aravind Adiga
Unfortunately, not every dead body goes to what might be considered "noble ends." There is a slim possibility that your donated head will be the head, the head that holds the key to the mysteries of the twenty-first century's great disease epidemics. But it is equally possible your body will end up being used to train a new crop of Beverly Hills plastic surgeons in the art of the facelift. Or dumped out of a plane to test parachute technology. Your body is donated to science in a very . . . general way. Where your parts go is not up to you. ~ Caitlin Doughty
Integrity In Science quotes by Caitlin Doughty
Daniel was among the first fruits of the captivity; and this is an instance of God's judgments being so incomprehensible by us. For had there been any integrity in the whole people, surely Daniel was a remarkable example of it for Ezekiel includes him among the three just men by whom most probably God would be appeased. (Ezekiel 14:14.) ~ John Calvin
Integrity In Science quotes by John Calvin
Everything in this world, as well as the world itself, strives for balance and harmony. Electron reaches proton, male tends to female, light replaces darkness, life is balanced by death, and vice versa. And evil on one scale will inevitably lead to the appearance of good on the other. ~ Alexandr Iscenco
Integrity In Science quotes by Alexandr Iscenco
There are things in life that science will never be able to see. We have to rely on what has been passed from our ancestors, generation to generation. ~ Pawan Mishra
Integrity In Science quotes by Pawan Mishra
Hubble was lucky in a way. The Hubble Space Telescope could easily have been given another name had certain events turned out differently: if someone had not prematurely died (Keeler), if someone else had not taken a promotion (Curtis), or if another (Shapley) was not mulishly wedded to a flawed vision of the cosmos. The discovery of the modern universe is a story filled with trials, errors, serendipitous breaks, battles of wills, missed opportunities, herculean measurements, and brilliant insights. In other words, it is science writ large. ~ Marcia Bartusiak
Integrity In Science quotes by Marcia Bartusiak
Gentlemen, as we study the universe we see everywhere the most tremendous manifestations of force. In our own experience we know of but one source of force, namely will. How then can we help regarding the forces we see in nature as due to the will of some omnipresent, omnipotent being? Gentlemen, there must be a GOD. ~ Benjamin Peirce
Integrity In Science quotes by Benjamin Peirce
What counts in any man is the consistency and integrity of his behavior, and his courage in taking a stand, not his conformity to official dogma. ~ Joost A.M. Meerloo
Integrity In Science quotes by Joost A.M. Meerloo
In the hands of a genius, engineering turns to magic, philosophy becomes poetry, and science pure imagination. ~ Benjamin Disraeli
Integrity In Science quotes by Benjamin Disraeli
I am sure my fellow-scientists will agree with me if I say that whatever we were able to achieve in our later years had its origin in the experiences of our youth and in the hopes and wishes which were formed before and during our time as students. ~ Felix Bloch
Integrity In Science quotes by Felix Bloch
Archaeology, I found, comprehended all manner of excitement and achievement. Adventure is coupled with bookish toil. Romantic excursions go hand in hand with scholarly self-discipline and moderation. Explorations among the ruins of the remote past have carried curious men all over the face of the earth ... Yet in truth, no science is more adventurous than archaeology, if adventure is thought of as a mixture of spirit and deed. ~ C. W. Ceram
Integrity In Science quotes by C. W. Ceram
Ensuring that the US continues to lead the world in science and technology will be a central priority for my administration. ~ Barack Obama
Integrity In Science quotes by Barack Obama
Social intelligence was therefore always at a high premium. A sharp sense of empathy can make a huge difference, and with it in an ability to manipulate, to gain cooperation, and to deceive. ~ Edward O. Wilson
Integrity In Science quotes by Edward O. Wilson
How shall Integrity face Oppression? What shall Honesty do in the face of Deception, Decency in the face of Insult, Self-Defense before Blows? How shall Desert and Accomplishment meet Despising, Detraction, and Lies? What shall Virtue do to meet Brute Force? There are so many answers and so contradictory; and such differences for those on the one hand who meet questions similar to this once a year or once a decade, and those who face them hourly and daily. ~ W.E.B. Du Bois
Integrity In Science quotes by W.E.B. Du Bois
Science could not fill the hole in my soul. ~ Terry H. Anderson
Integrity In Science quotes by Terry H. Anderson
Logic is the science of the laws of thought, as thought,
that is of the necessary conditions to which thought considered in itself is a subject. ~ Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet
Integrity In Science quotes by Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet
It is unwise to equate scientific activity with what we call reason, poetic activity with what we call imagination. Without the imaginative leap from facts to generalisation, no theoretic discovery in science is made. The poet, on the other hand, must not imagine but reason
that is to say, he must exercise a great deal of consciously directed thought in the selection and rejection of his data: there is a technical logic, a poetic reasoning in his choice of the words, rhythms and images by which a poem's coherence is achieved. ~ Cecil Day-Lewis
Integrity In Science quotes by Cecil Day-Lewis
