My interest in theatre started in high school, mostly because my dean forced me to do it. I was creating trouble in the hallways, so he demanded that I do something with my spare time. ~ Michael Weston
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Michael Weston
SHAKESPEARE

What is a man,
If his chief good and market of his time
Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more

(Hamlet)

There is no one kind of Shakespearean hero, although in many ways Hamlet is the epitome of the Renaissance tragic hero, who reaches his perfection only to die. In Shakespeare's early plays, his heroes are mainly historical figures, kings of England, as he traces some of the historical background to the nation's glory. But character and motive are more vital to his work than praise for the dynasty, and Shakespeare's range expands considerably during the 1590s, as he and his company became the stars of London theatre. Although he never went to university, as Marlowe and Kyd had done, Shakespeare had a wider range of reference and allusion, theme and content than any of his contemporaries. His plays, written for performance rather than publication, were not only highly successful as entertainment, they were also at the cutting edge of the debate on a great many of the moral and philosophical issues of the time.

Shakespeare's earliest concern was with kingship and history, with how 'this sceptr'd isle' came to its present glory. As his career progressed, the horizons of the world widened, and his explorations encompassed the geography of the human soul, just as the voyages of such travellers as Richard Hakluyt, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake expanded the horizons of the real world. ~ Ronald Carter

Hebbel Theatre quotes by David Amram
In the theatre, once you've gone about eight rows back, everybody else is just listening to you. You're very small, and nobody can really see what you're doing. ~ Francesca Annis
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Francesca Annis
When playing a role, I would feel more comfortable, as you're given a prescribed way of behaving. So, both Facebook and theatre provide contrived settings that provide the illusion of social interaction. ~ Jesse Eisenberg
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Jesse Eisenberg
Actors are the only honest hypocrites. ~ William Hazlitt
Hebbel Theatre quotes by William Hazlitt
I was called to audition for a play when I was very young, following which I continued to act as well as write and direct. When I moved to Delhi and joined Hindu College, theatre became a very big part of my life. ~ Imtiaz Ali
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Imtiaz Ali
Theatre, when it is at its best, takes a lot of beating - the live experience and the shared collective experience of live storytelling is really special when it is good. Particularly here in New York because the audiences are amazing, very vocal and very engaged, and that makes theatre very exciting. ~ Dan Stevens
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Dan Stevens
I believe in the American theatre. I believe in its power to inform about the human condition, its power to heal ... its power to uncover the truths we wrestle from uncertain and sometimes unyielding realities. ~ August Wilson
Hebbel Theatre quotes by August Wilson
Having started out in theatre, I feel an impulse to do it as much as I can. ~ Cillian Murphy
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Cillian Murphy
I used to do a lot of serious theatre during my school and college days. Comedy was only reserved for youth festival and inter-college competitions. Then once 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge' was launched, a regional channel in Punjab started a program based on that. I participated in it and emerged as the winner. ~ Kapil Sharma
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Kapil Sharma
Rather than disliking theatre, I've expressed a preference for television because it tends to deal in its small way much more with issues and is able to reach a broader church of people than theatre. ~ Christopher Eccleston
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Christopher Eccleston
All theatre, by virtue of its being a cultural construct and therefore ideologically inscribed, is political. ~ Mark S. Weinberg
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Mark S. Weinberg
I arrive at the theatre four hours before the beginning of the performance. I must get accustomed to the hall even if I know it well. ~ Mireille Mathieu
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Mireille Mathieu
If I were twenty or thirty years younger, I would start afresh in this field with the certainty of accomplishing much. But I should have to learn from the bottom up, forgetting the theatre entirely and concentrating on the special medium of this new art. My mistake, and that of many others, lay in employing "theatrical" techniques despite every effort to avoid them. Here is something quite, quite fresh, a penetrating form of visual poetry, an untried exponent of the human soul. Alas, I am too old for it! ~ Eleanora Duse
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Eleanora Duse
But it would be broadcast, and in the great public theatre of his age; that unregulated market of braying narcissists, that Wild West of disinformation and fraud, that infinite sea of piracy, the great electorate where the constituency of billions voted their approval with a click of a mouse. The internet. It brought governments down and rewrote history ... ~ Adam Nevill
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Adam Nevill
The theatre, for all its artifices, depicts life in a sense more truly than history, because the medium has a kindred movement to that of real life, though an artificial setting and form. ~ George Santayana
Hebbel Theatre quotes by George Santayana
I'm an obsessive musical theatre person, so some of the most formative albums for me were, you know, the 'Phantom Of The Opera' soundtrack or 'Into The Woods.' ~ Allison Williams
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Allison Williams
People prefer doing films. That is not the case with me. I don't do theatre because I have to but because it makes me feel alive. I enjoy the whole process of rehearsing, though repetition can make it tedious. ~ Randeep Hooda
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Randeep Hooda
In the theatre you can change things ever so slightly; it's an organic thing. Whereas in film you only have that chance on the day, and you have no control over it at all. ~ Judi Dench
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Judi Dench
[ELIZA]
You and your words flooded my senses, your sentences left me defenseless. You built me palaces out of paragraphs, you built cathedrals. ~ Lin-Manuel Miranda
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Lin-Manuel Miranda
I did spend about 5 years in the Griffin Theatre Company in 1978 actually , and worked therefore about 5 years on a voluntary basis. This was very much as a amateur, doing things like mopping the floor, handling props, setting up scenery, etc. I never acted, and don't think I'm an actor, but those years in the theatre taught me a lot about professional theatre. ~ Robert Dessaix
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Robert Dessaix
Until a character becomes a personality it cannot be believed. Without personality, the character may do funny or interesting things, but unless people are able to identify themselves with the character, its actions will seem unreal. And without personality, a story cannot ring true to the audience. ~ Walt Disney
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Walt Disney
The stars blink like a hairnet that was dropped / on a seat and now it is lying in the alley behind / the theatre where my play is echoed by dying voices. ~ Frank O'Hara
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Frank O'Hara
When you're in a show, all through rehearsals Tech Week hovers out there like a magical holy grail. In reality, Tech Week is always a train wreck of missed cues, forgotten lines, malfunctioning set pieces and short tempers. ~ S.M. Stevens
Hebbel Theatre quotes by S.M. Stevens
I've never been a puppeteer, I conceive and I write and I design and I direct. And not just puppets. I direct actors, I direct dancers, I direct singers, I direct films. I also direct puppeteers. I'm really a theatre maker, but there's not a word for that. ~ Julie Taymor
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Julie Taymor
I felt I was finally in a position to affect not only the artistic content of the American theatre, but also its institutional structures. This has been an important goal of mine, as there have always been a variety of issues - artistic freedom, author's rights, access by minority groups - which have concerned me and even influenced my decision to become a playwright in the first place. ~ David Henry Hwang
Hebbel Theatre quotes by David Henry Hwang

Hebbel Theatre quotes by Christian Friedrich Hebbel
I've learnt that there's acting for film, acting for theatre, and acting for an audition. ~ Sarah Snook
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Sarah Snook
He quickly observed, that good sentences and excellent representations of the follies of mankind met with little regard or applause, whilst sounds, without sense, threw every body into raptures: - - but 'twas the fashion of the day to be musically mad, and those who were absurd enough to prefer a rational entertainment to a flimsy opera, were poor insipid beings, without taste or enthusiasm. ~ Eliza Parsons
Hebbel Theatre quotes by Eliza Parsons
Theatre is more exciting in the sense that you can actually see the audience in the eye. You know there are no takes and retakes. You have one chance to do your job ... and you better do it well! ~ Christine Lahti
