Even though we don't know which companies the NSA has compromised – or by what means – knowing that they could have compromised any of them is enough to make us mistrustful of all of them. This is going to make it hard for large companies like Google and Microsoft to get back the trust they lost. Even if they succeed in limiting government surveillance. Even if they succeed in improving their own internal security. The best they'll be able to say is: "We have secured ourselves from the NSA, except for the parts that we either don't know about or can't talk about. ~ Bruce Schneier
Government Surveillance quotes by Bruce Schneier
Corporate and government surveillance aren't separate; they're an alliance of interests. ~ Bruce Schneier
Government Surveillance quotes by Bruce Schneier
Bringing an end to mass government surveillance needs to be a central pillar of returning to the principles we have put in jeopardy in the early 21st century. ~ Yochai Benkler
Government Surveillance quotes by Yochai Benkler
Cloud services cut both ways in terms of security: you get off-site backup and disaster recovery, but you entrust your secrets to somebody else's hands. Doing the latter increases your exposure to government surveillance and the potential for deliberate or inadvertent breaches of your confidential files. ~ Barton Gellman
Government Surveillance quotes by Barton Gellman
If you're doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide from the giant surveillance apparatus the government's been hiding. ~ Stephen Colbert
Government Surveillance quotes by Stephen Colbert
A big factor is that the enthusiast camp's values are really rooted in Silicon Valley and in these supposedly new business models. But again, I think this such an interesting moment because things like the NSA revelations are really forcing people to recognize the connections between corporate and government surveillance. ~ Astra Taylor
Government Surveillance quotes by Astra Taylor
I was trying to make the web more civil. I was trying to make it more elegant. I got rid of anonymity. I combined a thousand disparate elements into one unified system. But I didn't picture a world where Circle membership was mandatory, where all government and all life was channeled through one network. ~ Dave Eggers
Government Surveillance quotes by Dave Eggers
First, liberals discover social and economic problems. Not a difficult task: the human race has always had such problems and will continue to, short of the Garden of Eden. Liberals, however, usually need scores of millions in foundation grants and taxpayer-financed commissions to come up with the startling revelations of disease, poverty, ignorance, homelessness, et al. Having identified "problems" to the accompaniment of much coordinated fanfare, the liberals proceed to invoke "solutions," to be supplied, of course, by the federal government, which we all know and love as the Great Problem-Solving Machine. ~ Anonymous
Government Surveillance quotes by Anonymous
Many religious fundamentalists around the world would like to see the establishment of theocracies - states where religion and government are closely intertwined. While some just reject separation of [name of place of worship] and state, others go further and insist that one religion's tenets be made law.

The normal arguments for a theocracy are that, for example, it would lend a greater sense of morality to the making and enforcement of laws. Or that as our laws were originally derived from some moral commandments in a particular religion, it makes sense to enthrone this religion as chief in the state.

Basically, theocrats can talk until the cows come home about how great it would be if we were ruled by God, how great it would be if our laws followed God's laws, and so forth. But this vision of theocracy will never come to be, and should never come to be.

The fundamental problem with every theocracy is that is innately unfair. Not just unfair to those who do not follow the state religion, but also unfair to those who do not follow the state religion as it is understood and interpreted by the humans who run the state.

After all, who really believes that all the Muslims in any of the Islamic theocracies we have today are happy? Those who believe the wrong things about Islam from one particular point of view are mercilessly vilified - the present civil war in Iraq is an excellent example.

Why a theocracy would be unfair ~ John Lee
Government Surveillance quotes by John Lee
Living standards in both the public and private sector have to be brought down. The private sector has to sell more abroad and consume less at home. The government sector has to get closer to just spending what it can collect in taxes. ~ John Redwood
Government Surveillance quotes by John Redwood
The same government that requires a taxpaying citizen to document every statement on his tax return decrees that questioning a welfare applicant demeans and humiliates him. ~ Ronald Reagan
Government Surveillance quotes by Ronald Reagan
Civil government and economics and society change because theology changes. ~ Joseph C. Morecraft III
Government Surveillance quotes by Joseph C. Morecraft III
I have a hard time imagining a country or a government where I would say, "Oh, this is good," where I could live under a government that I respect for a day or a week, even to see what it feels like. ~ Aleksandar Hemon
Government Surveillance quotes by Aleksandar Hemon
During that time period all of our tribes were suffering extremely from poverty and neglect. And the reason I say neglect is because the U.S. Government was neglecting its true responsibilities they agreed to in exchange for our land and resources. What I and others attempted to do, and in essence we did, was bring attention to our sovereign rights, the rights we had retained when the treaties were made. ~ Leonard Peltier
Government Surveillance quotes by Leonard Peltier
There is nothing wrong with the United States
or the world at large
that cannot be stabilized and reconstructed by restoring the intelligence and integrity of all our organizations across the eight communities (academic, civil society, commerce, government, law enforcement, media, military, non-governmental/non-profit). ~ Robert David Steele
Government Surveillance quotes by Robert David Steele
It's not easy for the average family to ensure that their child receives a quality education. And the federal government is not making it any easier. ~ Kevin McCarthy
Government Surveillance quotes by Kevin McCarthy
I was born in 1966, at the beginning of the Biafran-Nigerian Civil War, and the war ended after three years. And I was growing up in school, and the federal government didn't want us taught about the history of the war, because they thought it probably would make us generate a new generation of rebels. ~ Chris Abani
Government Surveillance quotes by Chris Abani
Every possible effort should be made to stop recruiting for the Armed Forces. This may, and probably would, lead to some form of conscription being proposed or introduced. Thus would be provided a most favourable political platform upon which to fight the National Government. ~ Stafford Cripps
Government Surveillance quotes by Stafford Cripps
You could have done something with newspapers. We didn't do it. No nation did, because we were all too silly. We liked our newspapers with pictures of beach girls and headlines about cases of indecent assault, and no Government was wise enough to stop us having them that way. But something might have been done with newspapers, if we'd been wise enough. ~ Nevil Shute
Government Surveillance quotes by Nevil Shute
Native Americans are the original inhabitants of the land that now constitutes the United States. They have helped develop the fundamental principles of freedom of speech and separation of powers that form the foundation of the United States Government. ~ Joe Baca
Government Surveillance quotes by Joe Baca
These children should be enrolled in Independent Living programs designed by state and local governments to prepare them to enter the workplace, or attend college, and successfully manage their lives. ~ Charles Bass
Government Surveillance quotes by Charles Bass
Ever since the millennial crash, the United States has been buffeted by currency shocks, interest-rate gyrations, and financial device bubbles. Government fashions move "investment" from real estate consumption to climate distractions. It was technology alone that saved the world economy. ~ George Gilder
Government Surveillance quotes by George Gilder
Conservatives brayed that government should stay out of the private sector; liberals bleated for nationalizing the banks. ~ Steven Rattner
Government Surveillance quotes by Steven Rattner
When I meet a government which says to me, "Your money or your life," why should I be in haste to give it my money? ~ Henry David Thoreau
Government Surveillance quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Liberal Democrats in government will not follow the last Labour government by sounding the retreat on the protection of civil liberties in the United Kingdom. It continues to be essential that our civil liberties are safeguarded, and that the state is not given the powers to snoop on its citizens at will. ~ Nick Clegg
Government Surveillance quotes by Nick Clegg
It is time to cut out the mountains of waste and inefficiency and duplication in the federal government. ~ Mitt Romney
Government Surveillance quotes by Mitt Romney
You know what the fastest growing religion in America is? Statism. The growing reliance on government. ~ Marco Rubio
Government Surveillance quotes by Marco Rubio
Governments are out of control, irresponsible, never have enough money, never tighten their own belts, and when they are forced to, they always threaten to shut down police departments and teachers and all these things. ~ Rush Limbaugh
Government Surveillance quotes by Rush Limbaugh
Writing checks to the IRS that include strings of zeros does not bother me ... Overall, we feel extraordinarily lucky to have been dealt a hand in life that enables us to write large checks to the government rather than one requiring the government to regularly write checks to us-say, because we are disabled or unemployed. ~ Warren Buffett
Government Surveillance quotes by Warren Buffett
Moreover, as business and government have grown in parallel, ~ Brink Lindsey
Government Surveillance quotes by Brink Lindsey
[T]he only way to shrink the trade deficit is for the government to prohibit us from buying whatever we want. ~ John Stossel
Government Surveillance quotes by John Stossel
I hope every person who reads or hears this will take the time to go back and read the Declaration of Independence. Only by recapturing the spirit of independence can we ensure our government never resembles the one from which the American States declared their separation. ~ Ron Paul
Government Surveillance quotes by Ron Paul
One of the few things the Air Force did admit to me existed out there presently without admitting that it was Area 51 is this drone called the 'Beast of Kandahar' which does not fire missiles, unlike the Predator and the Reaper, but just conducts surveillance. ~ Annie Jacobsen
Government Surveillance quotes by Annie Jacobsen
No man means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous. ~ Henry Adams
Government Surveillance quotes by Henry Adams
But again, you know, the views that we've expressed are transferring power back from the federal government to the states, giving Alaska an incredible opportunity to expand its economy, especially at a time when our federal government is coming close to bankruptcy. So that is a broad-based appeal. It's not an extreme view. ~ Joe Miller
Government Surveillance quotes by Joe Miller
It is a proof of the divergence of the tendencies of the socialist and the bourgeois pictures of history - and from now on there will be two distinct historical cultures running side by side without ever really fusing - that people who have been brought up on the conventional version of history and know all about the Robespierrist Terror during the Great French Revolution, should find it an unfamiliar fact that the Terror of the government of Thiers executed, imprisoned or exiled more people - the number has been estimated at a hundred thousand - in that one week of the suppression of the [Paris] Commune [of 1871] than the revolutionary Terror of Robespierre had done in three years. ~ Edmund Wilson
Government Surveillance quotes by Edmund Wilson
Every day Big Government heaps demands and restrictions upon businesses that sink some enterprises, cause others to direct resources away from serving customers and instead toward jumping through hoops of lawyers and regulators, and prevent other operations from ever getting off the ground. ~ Joel Miller
Government Surveillance quotes by Joel Miller
Democracy without respect for individual rights sucks. It's just ganging up against the weird kid, and I'm always the weird kid. ~ Penn Jillette
Government Surveillance quotes by Penn Jillette
When Russia had disputes with neighbors such as Ukraine over gas prices, it did not hesitate to cut off gas supplies as a form of economic power. Later, when a more sympathetic government came to power in Ukraine, Russia used the lure of heavily discounted gas prices to obtain the extension of its lease of a naval base in Ukraine, thus complicating the prospect that Ukraine might one day join NATO. ~ Joseph S. Nye Jr.
Government Surveillance quotes by Joseph S. Nye Jr.
If I was a private individual, I'd be more careful; but being as I'm a government, I'm privileged to make a God-damned fool of myself in any way I choose, especially by spending a lot more money than I've got or ever will have, and promising to do things that I ain't got a chance of doing. ~ Kenneth Roberts
Government Surveillance quotes by Kenneth Roberts
The easy way to make money is to get special political privilege. From the beginning of time, business has cozied up to government and gotten restrictions on competition and subsidies and stuff. ~ Charles Koch
Government Surveillance quotes by Charles Koch
What, then, do they want a government for? Not to regulate commerce; not to educate the people; not to teach religion, not to administer charity; not to make roads and railways; but simply to defend the natural rights of man
to protect person and property
to prevent the aggressions of the powerful upon the weak
in a word, to administer justice. This is the natural, the original, office of a government. It was not intended to do less: it ought not to be allowed to do more. ~ Herbert Spencer
Government Surveillance quotes by Herbert Spencer
