Life Is an Ambiguous Stimulus

In a very real sense, life is an ambiguous stimulus. Does survival of a heart attack indicate that death is imminent or that one has been given a new lease on life? Is falling in love an assurance of a lifelong partnership or the first sign of an inevitable heartbreak? Many human situations are complex and their meanings subtle. Thus, to make sense of and gain agency over our experiences, we engage in the process of self-reflection.
Through self-reflection, people come to realize that their lives are filled with uncertainty about their own identities, their relationships with others, and their environmental circumstances. Because living involves adaptation to irregular changes and perturbations from the environment, the process of self-reflection reveals the indefinite nature of life. The uncertainty stemming from threatening stimuli whose nature is unknown or unpredictable evokes stress and a sense of loss of control. In response to uncertainty, we are driven to make meaning of our experiences and in so doing to reduce uncertainty. Indeed, a series of cunning experiments demonstrated that the sense of lacking control promotes illusory pattern perception in ambiguous situations. Hence, people consciously or unconsciously attempt to regain a sense of control by projecting patterns onto the chaos of their lives. This meaning-making process hinged on the appraisal of stressors and their meaningful integration into our autobiographica ~ Todd Kashdan
Garland El quotes by Todd Kashdan
It's easier making a smaller film like El Mariachi. There are no budget worries because there is no budget. There is no crew problem because there is no crew. And if you screw up, no one is around to see you screw up
so it's no longer a screw up. ~ Robert Rodriguez
Garland El quotes by Robert Rodriguez
You meet a lot of people [in Dubai] coming from a lot of different places. Even me, I'm always in transit. I don't stay anywhere too long. I like the energy that I found when I came here the first time. I start knowing people, and people start knowing me as well. ~ EL Seed
Garland El quotes by EL Seed
Of course witnessing poverty was the first to be ticked off the list. Then I had to graduate to the more obscure stuff. Being in a riot was something I pursued with a truly obsessive zeal, along with being tear-gassed and hearing gunshots fired in anger. ~ Alex Garland
Garland El quotes by Alex Garland
A drone is often preferred for missions that are too "dull, dirty, or dangerous" for manned aircraft."

PROLOGUE

The graffiti was in Spanish, neon colors highlighting the varicose cracks in the wall. It smelled of urine and pot. The front door was metal with four bolt locks and the windows were frosted glass, embedded with chicken wire. They swung out and up like big fake eye-lashes held up with a notched adjustment bar.

This was a factory building on the near west side of Cleveland in an industrial area on the Cuyahoga River known in Ohio as The Flats.

First a sweatshop garment factory, then a warehouse for imported cheeses then a crack den for teenage potheads. It was now headquarters for Magic Slim, the only pimp in Cleveland with his own film studio and training facility.

Her name was Cosita, she was eighteen looking like fourteen. One of nine children from El Chorillo. a dangerous poverty stricken barrio on the outskirts of Panama City. Her brother, Javier, had been snatched from the streets six months ago, he was thirteen and beautiful.

Cosita had a high school education but earned here degree on the streets of Panama.

Interpol, the world's largest international police organization, had recruited Cosita at seventeen. She was smart, street savvy, motivated and very pretty. Just what Interpol was looking for.

I'm the original take-orders girl. ~ Judy Garland
Garland El quotes by Judy Garland
I'm trying to create artwork that makes people, and myself, think about judgment as a reflex. This is something that must be changed. ~ EL Seed
Garland El quotes by EL Seed
Love is the garland without thread that bound us together as a family, as a society, as a nation, and for the humanity. ~ Debasish Mridha
Garland El quotes by Debasish Mridha
If human beings pretend to be God, then forget about democracy. If they understand that no human being can represent God, then sure. ~ Khaled Abou El Fadl
Garland El quotes by Khaled Abou El Fadl
It's a strange thing to be dying. For so long I thought the end of my life would come suddenly, when the plague found its way north to the neutral country, or the Red rebelled once more and we were plunged into another bout of fratricide. Instead, I've been sentenced to that most ordinary of deaths, an overabundance of malfunctioning cells. I read once that a moderately ravenous cancer is, in a pragmatic sense, a decent way to die - not so prolonged as to entail years of suffering, but affording enough time that one might have a chance to make the necessary arrangements, to say what needs to be said. ~ Omar El Akkad
Garland El quotes by Omar El Akkad
Gohar smiled at the thought of El Kordi, at his exaggeration of his troubles, more fictitious than real, and his constant search for human dignity. "What is most futile in man," he thought, "is this search for dignity." All these people trying to maintain their dignity! For what? The history of mankind is a long, bloody nightmare only because of such nonsense. ~ Albert Cossery
Garland El quotes by Albert Cossery
There is not a revolution that succeeded in a few months. It takes years, even decades, to fulfill its goals. I am very hopeful because I trust the revolution and feel nobody can really conquer a nation that has decided to be united and to fight, and we decided to fight. The revolution is there, inside the Egyptians by the millions. ~ Nawal El Saadawi
Garland El quotes by Nawal El Saadawi
Whom boasts about his happiness, cause doesn't got it! ~ Miguel El Portugues
Garland El quotes by Miguel El Portugues
Women in most countries have not achieved much, because they can't be liberated under the patriarchal, capitalist, imperialist and military system that determines the way we live now, and which is governed by power, not justice, by false democracy, not real freedom. ~ Nawal El Saadawi
Garland El quotes by Nawal El Saadawi
Tell me.. What's the extreme of depression? It's hysteria. What is the extreme of laughs but tears? And the extreme of screams is silence while the extreme of pain is sedation. ~ Noha Alaa El-Din
Garland El quotes by Noha Alaa El-Din
Worry is like a squatter: it sneaks in and tries to stay without paying rent! Serve it eviction papers! HS/el ~ Evinda Lepins
Garland El quotes by Evinda Lepins
The more we communicate with God, the shorter the distance to the long distance call! He never has voicemail on! EL ~ Evinda Lepins
Garland El quotes by Evinda Lepins
Sarat thought about how easy it would be to fix the mistake, to simply redraw the stars properly. But she knew that even broken history is history. The stars, cast wrong, must remain that way. It would be more wrong to change them. ~ Omar El Akkad
Garland El quotes by Omar El Akkad
Offering a sacrifice of righteousness in the heat of the moment requires the water of the Spirit to be included into the fire in order to be put out! EL ~ Evinda Lepins
Garland El quotes by Evinda Lepins
If all I had was all that money could buy, I'd be bankrupt! EL ~ Evinda Lepins
Garland El quotes by Evinda Lepins
I'm Egyptian and Muslim, but I grew up in the West, far from my Arab roots. I began 'Sex and the Citadel' to help outsiders - like myself - to better comprehend this pivotal part of the world, up-close and personal. ~ Shereen El Feki
Garland El quotes by Shereen El Feki
Why we cannot build a system like El Al to be proactive. Why do we have only to react? The shoe bomber - reaction? Take off your shoes. The Nigerian - the body scanner is a result of the Nigerian guy. ~ Isaac Yeffet
Garland El quotes by Isaac Yeffet
...it was becoming obvious that the war he had been anticipating, "in three to five years" might have already begun, as many wars do begin, he said, not with a major event reported in the news but with sufferings barely noticed: an unjust law, a murder, a peaceful protest march attacked by police. It begins, according to Leonel, with poverty endured by many and corruption benefiting the few, with crimes unpunished, a hardening of positions, the failure of peaceful means of appeal and redress. ~ Carolyn Forche
Garland El quotes by Carolyn Forche
Yet not for a single moment did I have any doubts about my own integrity and honour as a woman. I knew that my profession had been invented by men, and that men were in control of both our worlds, the one on earth, and the one in heaven. That men force women to sell their bodies at a price, and that the lowest paid body is that of a wife. All women are prostitutes of one kind or another. ~ Nawal El Saadawi
Garland El quotes by Nawal El Saadawi
I was born at the age of twelve on an MGM lot. ~ Judy Garland
Garland El quotes by Judy Garland
I
lived through beautiful times, Busayna. It was a different age. Cairo
was like Europe. It was clean and smart and the people were well
mannered and respectable and everyone knew his place exactly. I was
different too. I had my station in life, my money, all my friends were of
a certain niveau, I had my special places where I would spend the
evening - the Automobile Club, the Club Muhammad Ali, the Gezira
Club. What times! Every night was filled with laughter and parties and
drinking and singing. There were lots of foreigners in Cairo. Most of
the people living downtown were foreigners, until Abd el Nasser threw
them out in 1956."
"Why did he throw them out?"
"He threw the Jews out first, then the rest of the foreigners got
scared and left. By the way, what's your opinion of Abd el Nasser?"
"I was born after he died. I don't know. Some people say he was a
hero and others say he was a criminal."
"Abd el Nasser was the worst ruler in the whole history of Egypt.
He ruined the country and brought us defeat and poverty. The damage
he did to the Egyptian character will take years to repair. Abd el Nasser
taught the Egyptians to be cowards, opportunists, and hypocrites."
"So why do people love him?"
"Who says people love him?"
"Lots of people that I know love him."
"Anyone who loves Abd el Nasser is either an ignoramus or did
well out of him. The Free Officers wer ~ Alaa Al Aswany
Garland El quotes by Alaa Al Aswany
When u are small, u can choose which way to grow. If you are kind and decent, you grow into a kind and decent man. And if you are like El Patron . . . Just think about it." – Tam Lin ~ Nancy Farmer
Garland El quotes by Nancy Farmer
What would you change about yourself if you could change anything? ~ Paula Heller Garland
Garland El quotes by Paula Heller Garland
Writer's block is real. It happens. Some days you sit down at the
old typewriter, put your fingers on the keys, and nothing pops
into your head. Blanko. Nada. El nothingissimo. What you do
when this happens is what separates you from the one-of-thesedays-
I'm-gonna-write-a-book crowd. ~ James N. Frey
Garland El quotes by James N. Frey
[T]he people who are close to Allah worry so much about wasting time that they call themselves to account for every breath they spend - how many of us wonder about how we spend our day, let alone each breath? ~ Ethar El-Katatney
Garland El quotes by Ethar El-Katatney
You, you only, exist.
We pass away, till at last,
our passing is so immense
that you arise: beautiful moment,
in all your suddenness,
arising in love, or enchanted
in the contraction of work.
To you I belong, however time may
wear me away. From you to you
I go commanded. In between
the garland is hanging in chance; but if you
take it up and up and up: look:
all becomes festival! ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Garland El quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
I don't have any delusions of grandeur. I just want to make music that doesn't make me bored. ~ El-P
Garland El quotes by El-P
We cast away priceless time in dreams, born of imagination, fed upon illusion, and put to death by reality. ~ Judy Garland
Garland El quotes by Judy Garland
When the wind blows in your face,
when you feel you are losing your head,
when the going gets tough,
and when all else fails,
look inside you,
you are not alone. ~ Malak El Halabi
Garland El quotes by Malak El Halabi
We're on the moon," Sadie murmured. "El Paso, Texas," Bast corrected. ~ Rick Riordan
Garland El quotes by Rick Riordan
If the Scottish people decide to opt for independence, it would not be a good idea for Scotland to maintain a very rigid link to the pound. ~ Mohamed El-Erian
Garland El quotes by Mohamed El-Erian
If you are my flower and I your water,
you'll be with me always watered ~ Miguel El Portugues
Garland El quotes by Miguel El Portugues
How long can interest rates stay negative? Think about this. Not only are you lending your money to governments, but you're paying them interest for the privilege of doing so. ~ Mohamed El-Erian
Garland El quotes by Mohamed El-Erian
All right," said Eden. "After all, we've got to hide somewhere. And even if they move on a bit faster than we can, they'll still leave signs, won't they?
"Yes, they'll drip blood and leave echoes of people laughing," said Timon in a dark voice. Eden looked at him apprehensively. But then Timon laughed himself. "Joking! Joking! Only joking!" he cried, and Eden nodded, echoing his laughter rather uncertainly. ~ Margaret Mahy
Garland El quotes by Margaret Mahy
Grace allows for questions ... and is the answer! EL ~ Evinda Lepins
Garland El quotes by Evinda Lepins
Jed! I got stuck in some air pocket with more exits than ... " I couldn't think of anything famous with a large number of exits "I nearly drowned! ~ Alex Garland
Garland El quotes by Alex Garland
I'm not like he is, you know," he tells me, but that isn't the part that stirs my cold, dead heart. It's the words he follows it up with a second later, as though it barely takes him anything to let them out: "So if you want to run, run. I won't sit on the side-lines and wait for you to slip away, like you never existed." He pauses, thickly. Takes a second, in a way I can understand. "I'll fight for you, El. I'll always fight for you. ~ Charlotte Stein
Garland El quotes by Charlotte Stein
If we really believe that He who begun the work will be faithful to complete it, why do we put a time limit on Him? EL ~ Evinda Lepins
Garland El quotes by Evinda Lepins
As a whole, investors should welcome attempts to safeguard the integrity of markets. You need very clear rules applied to markets. ~ Mohamed El-Erian
